Jeremy Plonk: Parx $145K Carryover/Mandatory Payout Pick 5 Analys

    November 25, 2025 | By Jeremy Plonk

Parx will have a $145,980 carryover in its Philly Big 5 (late pick 5) wager Wednesday, featuring a mandatory payout provision. The all-stakes sequence starts in Race 6 with the Pennsylvania Nursery with an approximate post of 2:20 pm ET. Overnight rains in greater Philadelphia should be considered when handicapping the card.

Parx: Race 6 (2:20 pm ET) | $100,000 Pennsylvania Nursery

Trainer Butch Reid has a pair of strong options om #4 Flyin Hawaiian and #7 Mailata, neither of which is among the top-2 favorites in the morning line. Flyin Hawaiian smashed a dash cast in late July in his only local appearance before pressing and fading to expected 2YO champion Ted Noffey in Saratoga’s Grade 1 Hopeful. He’s got 6 well-spaced drills for the return and should factor on the front. #7 Mailata wired maidens around 2 turns last out, but showed ability to rally in 2 sprints prior and should be perfectly suited for 7 furlongs under ace local pilot Mychel Sanchez (this combo wins 33% together at Parx).

Parx: Race 7 (2:47 pm ET) | $75,000 Cornucopia Stakes

Defending race champ #5 Beach Daze is 15-1 morning line off a series of lackluster no-fires from off the pace, but note a stellar mark on wet tracks and that he was 10-1 and not in any sort of predictive form when upsetting this a year ago. #9 Nature’s Candy has been in a groove of late and her best would be effective here, albeit she has a penchant for some misfires. #10 Doctor Abbie has moved up noticeably in 2 starts since coming to Penn National-based Tim Kresier’s barn. She will be cooking late and loves a wet track. #1 Alani is about as consistent rail speed and awfully reliable. #6 Takethemoneyhoney ran Saturday at Laurel and would be expected to scratch.

Parx: Race 8 (3:14 pm ET) | $75,000 Turkey Trot Stakes

None of the favorites – #4 Adero, #6 Irish Cork or #8 Ninetyprcentmaddie – will be mistaken for a win machine over the past year, often finding 1 or 2 better. Let’s gamble on that continuing while buying the remainder of the lineup, all likely to be prices. The most likely of that 5-pack would be #3 Call Me Fast off a blitzing win vs. lesser for the dangerous Ness-Sanchez combo.

Parx: Race 9 (3:41 pm ET) | $100,000 Shamrock Rose Stakes

Several of these are cross-entered tonight in Penn National’s Blue Mountain Stakes, and given regular rider Angel Cruz is named at Penn Nat and not at Parx, I’d expect morning line favorite Keystone State to scratch from this spot. #10 River Escape was fantastic after a troubled break in winning her debut like a good thing, spread-eagling the field November 5. I’d prefer to see a workout since for the Kate DeMasi trainee, but she’s a $120,000 Essential Quality 2-year-old buy who looks like a good one at this level. Single.

    Parx: Race 10 (4:08 pm ET) | $75,000 Let’s Give Thanks Stakes

#8 Maximus Meridius looks aimed for this spot and has run big over the track and on off going. He should be right in the mix throughout, but there’s a tiny pause of concern with a 3-week gap in the workout tab in the past month or so. I wouldn’t expect #4 Twisted Ride back on 4 days’ rest even if trainer Michael Moore has had some success on rapid turnarounds. #1 Howgreatisnate would be an inclusion in the event the track is dry, but has struggled on wet surfaces. It’s likely a second single here with Maximus Meridius.

    The Ticket:
    7,4 with 5,9,10,1 with 3,1,2,5,7 with 10 with 8 = $20 for 50 cents

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #5
#9 Lordbetwentothorns He ran a good one in his first trip over the track last time out, and I like that he has been able to get past some horses late in a couple of his previous starts. Might get a good run from out here while racing with Lasix for the first time.
#2 Fracture Not quite sure what to do with this one, as anything like his debut at Keeneland would get the job done here, but that came back in April 2024, and he went right to the bench after a terrible follow-up try. Big company lines to show up in a spot like this locally.
#1 Docs Legend Considered this one on top, as he should find a decent trip from the inside, but I'm a little concerned that the race shape won't flatter the way he finishes.
Race Summary Lordbetwentothorns might find a really good trip right up on the splits here, and a move forward with Lasix today might be enough to get him home at a midrange price.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#4 Khali J Nothing wrong through two starts here, and she's probably in line for a pretty perfect trip while tracking the quicker players early. Lots to like, but the price might reflect that.
#8 Aurora's Music Her only local try was pretty solid, and she has enough pace to stay in the mix early on while meeting a few other forward players. There is some spying form a handful of races back on her form -- that may play well here.
#1 She's So Sexy Think there is enough potential pace to keep her honest, but she also has that dangerous midrace pace that can discourage some other speed. Wouldn't be a shock if she shakes free at any point.
Race Summary Khali J may still have some upside with just two races under her belt, and she figures for a good trip in here while keeping tabs on the speedier types.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#9 Couple Beers Deep Outside pace should be attacking the whole way, and he turned in a sharp score last time out. Forces the issue to score?
#6 Drill Em He's got some grinding finishing ability that might keep him rolling past a few of these late to land a share. Tougher spot today, but he has been pretty honest.
#1 Truth N Soul No good feel for this one, but the general form fits for a finishing run to keep him in the picture here. Your call.
Race Summary Couple Beers Deep should be prompting the pace from the start, and I can see him just clearing into the lane and holding from there.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Penn National - Race #3
#4 VIVID ARTISTE (3-1) Piling up checks, burning serious money, one more chance to rally in time.
#9 SANDY GIRL (9-2) Second at stretch call in last four, might need passing gear from post 9.
#3 INDIGO PASS (9-2) ‘Vivid’s’ uncoupled stablemate has yet to run back to fastest-of-91 work Sept. 6.
Race Summary VIVID ARTISTE rallied for minor awards in four of her last five starts and will have another chance for a breakthrough win with speed to her inside and outside. She sat a decent trip and finished well last out but was no match for the 2-1 winner, who shook free of a front-end duel. Bet to win and place and play 4-3 and 4-9 exactas.
        Penn National - Race #5
#6 LIVE STREAM (8-1) Live price play with clean start in speed-laden stakes race.
#8 TOUGH GUY TONY (5-2) Won on speed-favoring Parx track, pressed in 6F win at Delaware.
#2 CAIRO SURPRISE (5-1) Has done little wrong in three starts for 28-percent barn with 2yos.
Race Summary No shortage of speed in the $50,000 South Mountain Stakes for 2-year-olds. It sets up well for LIVE STREAM to mount a contending rally at a good price if he avoids his third troubled start in a row. He saved ground until the stretch, found a seam between runners in mid-stretch and won a 6-1/2F stakes at Presque Isle Downs off similar rest. Bet to win and place and play a 2-5-6-8 exacta box.
        Penn National - Race #0
#7 PORCH SWING (9-5) Had dead aim on victory in longer route but settled for second best.
#5 AMPERSAND (2-1) Winless long time, but plenty of back-class to summon on drop to bottom level.
#6 INDIRECTLY (15-1) Many chances at this level, good one-mile record, second start off freshening.
Race Summary PORCH SWING looked like a winner at the top of the stretch last out. He vacated the rail on the turn, ranged up alongside the dueling leaders, only to wander through the lane and get out-gamed by the pace-setting favorite. He won three of his previous six starts by a combined 11-3/4 lengths. Bet to win and place.

              # 3 HAPPY'S SMILE 3/1
              # 6 CATCHPHRASE 2/1
REDWINEANDWHISKEY is the most competitive wager in this race. Perez has a winning percentage of 21 over the last month. Is a solid choice - given the 79 speed figure from her most recent race. Has very strong Speed Figures and has to be considered for a wager in this race. HAPPY'S SMILE - This one has been constatntly racing well recently. Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 63 speed rating which is one of the most favorable in this group of horses in this race. CATCHPHRASE - She has put up competitive figures under today's conditions and will most likely fare well against this field. With Gutierrez controlling the reins on her, this mare will almost certainly be able to break out quickly in this contest.

                #4 MY SECRET DREAMS (ML=8/1)
                #1 BERLINWIN (ML=4/1)
                #2 P. O. S. H. POSH (ML=7/2)

MY SECRET DREAMS - This filly is in top form right now. Finished third in the last race and comes back quickly. This pony broke from the outside at Churchill Downs last time out, racing 1 mile, but is getting a low post in this race, which should help her chances today. BERLINWIN - This rider and trainer's animals have been producing a profitable ROI. Kenneally brings her right back. I suggest you stay with this strong filly. P. O. S. H. POSH - This racer picks up a lot of money per start. I believe she can augment the lifetime earnings right here in this race.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ZEN YOGA (ML=5/1), #9 FROSTY FOR EVER (ML=5/1), #6 DENISE SAYS NO (ML=6/1),

ZEN YOGA - 5/1 is just not enough of a reward to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back efforts. Somewhat easily forgotten speed figure in the last race at Churchill Downs at 6 furlongs. Don't think this steed will improve too much in today's race. FROSTY FOR EVER - 5/1 is not enough of a reward to take on most any horse that has run poorly in back to back efforts. This runner ran a common speed fig last time out. She shouldn't run better and will probably get beat in today's event running that number. DENISE SAYS NO - This animal hasn't shown much effort in the last two races.

                  # 4 TORTUGA ISLAND 10/1
                  # 2 CASTAGNA 12/1
SWEET NOLA seems to be the bet in here. Formidable average Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races make this horse a solid contender. This mare has posted some nice finish positions in her last few starts. Demonstrates the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 83 Equibase Speed Fig which is one of the most respectable in this field. TORTUGA ISLAND - Recently Becker has provided investors with a quite good winning percentage with horses travelling in dirt sprint races. CASTAGNA - Mendieta is very serious with this one, wheeling her back almost immediately. If you gander closely, this entrant has some longshot potential.

                    Charles Town - Race #6 - Post: 9:21pm - Allowance - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $31,700 Class Rating: 91

                    Rating:

                    #3 DIRECT APPEAL (ML=9/2)
                    #10 NOCASHREFUNDS (ML=5/1)
                    #7 MON GATEAU (ML=8/1)

DIRECT APPEAL - Possibly a peak effort for this gelding today. Been getting closer with each recent start. Lewis is back for another contest today after riding on board this horse for the first time on November 5th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. This jock/conditioner duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +999. This gelding is in exceptional condition right now. Finished first last time around the track and comes back rapidly. PP lines show this horse with three improving speed ratings. Lewis should be on a horse ready to go in today's race. NOCASHREFUNDS - This campaigner coming off a sharp performance in the last 30 days is a solid contender in my humble opinion. MON GATEAU - I believe Brown is making a good move here. This gelding can only be aided by the shorter trip.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 MOONLIT NOTION (ML=5/2), #5 TOUR GUIDE (ML=6/1), #8 DANCE FOR GREEN (ML=8/1),

MOONLIT NOTION - It looks like too much early speed is signed up in this clash. This speed merchant will in all probability get cooked at the front. TOUR GUIDE - This animal didn't show any pace in the last race. Now he is trying a sprint. Tough chance at the shorter distance. Mediocre speed rating in the last race at Charles Town at 1 1/16 miles. Don't think this mount will improve too much today. DANCE FOR GREEN - Garnered a common speed fig last out in a $5,000 Claiming race on Oct 25th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that figure.

Look no further than LEVI as the play in this event. The panel of smart guys knows that speed is very important in harness racing. This nice horse will unlock our way to a nice win. Good for a win wager just off the outstanding prior class statistics. Have to like this solid standardbred. Starters win from this position at Monticello Raceway with better than average regularity, suggesting this super wager. LUCIANO N - Can't forget based on TrackMaster Speed Ratings which have been outstanding (78 avg) most recently. The 76 average class stat may give this gelding a distinct advantage in the field of horses. DAKOTA PEARL - The panel of smart guys saw this horse's name on a t-shirt. Call it our coffee house play, worth a small wager.

ANNIE L sure does look ready to end up in the winner's circle. Could be the top in the pack here, showing competitive figures of late. Average speed is a solid 73. It's somewhat dicey to consider solely based on class, but this filly has among the most competitive class rankings of the field. Has to be given a look based on the good TrackMaster speed fig achieved in the most recent race. MISS SNICKERS - Really liked this filly's last race. Ran a big 65 TrackMaster speed fig. Major contender. 62 percent of the time this trainer and horse match end up hitting the board. Big players in this one. CS SWAN LEXI - Recorded a 67 TrackMaster SR in last race. A duplicate outing here should get the victory today. Schwartz has been able to get this horse to perform when sending to the post. Always worth a look.
