Al Cimaglia: Hawthorne Racecourse Late Pick 4 Analysis

    December 5, 2025 | By Al Cimaglia

Hawthorne Racecourse has a Friday matinee 8-race card, the first post is 1:00 PM CST. The 0.50 Late Pick starts in Race 5 and will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 5 (2:20 PM CST)

5-Kiss My Mooss (7-1)-Might have been overmatched in the big money Illinois stakes but performed well in the last 2 races. The most recent start was against this kind, left from the 10-hole, was used early and didn't quit down the lane. Starts in a much better slot, won't be 35-1 but could offer a solid price. Will use in case the morning line choice has a bumpy trip.
8-Maypearl (2-1)-This is the field's leading money winner and has won 3 straight. The post draw might make it more of challenge, but it is the one to beat.

    Race 6 (2:40 PM CST)

2-Lottie's Webb (4-1)-Faded down the lane to finish 2nd on 11-21 and has been off since. Faces some of the same and the winner is not in this field. Needs an efficient trip to post a win and that could happen with this post draw.
3-Rk's Toni (7-1)-Left from post 7 in last and was far back early but finished 3rd just behind the one above. Gets post relief and a ++ driver change in Casey Leonard. Does good work at Haw (20-6-2-2) and should be closer to the leader turning for the wire.
7-Got The Grins (9-1)-Drew off by >3 lengths on 11-13 against better.. Then took an aggressive jump up in class and was a beaten 6th. Now drops back to a competitive level and at 9-1 is well worth a swing. Has hit the board in 5 of 7 in Stickney and took 2 pictures.

    Race 7 (3:00 PM CST)

7-JM's Determination (4-1)-Took the long way around and finished a beaten 4th. This will be the 4th start in town for this mare and will look for an improved effort at a square price.
8-Seeyousomewhere (15-1)-This is also the 4th start in town and this filly drops to a more competitive level. Gets a positive driver change in Mike Oosting and with a sharp steer could surprise at a big price.

    Race 8 (3:20 PM CST)

3-Jewel's Lady (9/2)-This is a soft bunch and Lady has lost less than others due to the fact she has had only 8 starts. The 4-year-old was a late starter but tonight gets the best pilot as Leonard steers. Should be forwardly placed and could get a suck around win.
9-Minithezzzmoocher (5-1)-Comes off a decent effort finishing a close 2nd and the winner isn't a concern tonight. The post helps the price, and the beaten chalk could be in the mix if in striking range at the head of the lane.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    5,8/2,3,7/7,8/3,9
    Total Bet=$12

      Laurel Park Pick 4, December 5, 2025

      December 5, 2025 | By Frank Carulli

      LAUREL PARK LATE PICK 4
      Friday, December 5, 2025

Laurel Park’s popular Late Pick 4 features large, competitive fields this Friday, Dec. 5. Here’s a closer look and a suggested $42 play for the 50-cent wager:

LRL 5th race (2:00 p.m. EST) -- PAINTMYMASTERPIECE awakened in his second start despite a nightmare trip. He bumped a rival at the break, checked off heels and climbed badly on the first turn, followed the odds-on winner while the pace slowed and finished a clear second in a longer route race. He cuts back to a one-turn mile and figures tough if he minds his manners. HIXON, the son of three-time Grade 1-winning router Hoppertunity, will try to enhance trainer Brittany Russell’s current 12-for-39 streak with first-time starters running one mile.

LRL 6th race (2:30 p.m. EST) -- This field doesn’t appear up to the 69 Beyer par at this level, so go deep on the ticket. Morning-line favorite NOLA BOSS out-dueled the favorite but gave way to the trip-sitter at a distance which she broke her maiden for $40,000 and later romped at Colonial Downs. KISSLING has speed and six wins as the lone 3-year-old facing all non-winners of 3 types. FIND FAITH worked in :48-2/5 since an improved second start off a long layoff and could be rounding to a winning effort at a good price. CITY PANDA rallied into a fast pace and won going away two back, now she changes riders and gets in light-weighted. CANDYCRUMBS can launch a contending rally if his slow-starting habit doesn’t resurface. BRIGHT CHARGER was eliminated at the break in a comeback allowance but has to be respected in this barn. IMAGINE IT ALL is 8/2-1-1 on the main track but has been entered in turf races the last three years.

LRL 7th race (2:59 p.m. EST) -- ISLE BLUE, in-hand while tracking the dueling leaders, angled to the inside on the final turn and drew away for an easy, second-out victory at Finger Lakes. She will have to step it up a level in this field, but the runner-up came back with a 9-3/4-length win with a 62 Beyer. INTREPID MO eased back entering the final turn in her first test at 1-1/16 miles, then rallied to finish second. She gets in light-weighted and is reunited with leading rider Yedsit Hazelwood, who was aboard for a 7F victory two back.

LRL 8th race (3:28 p.m. EST) -- LADY CHARLOTTE got a breather after she forged command into the turn, then held safe a willing stretch run by runner-up ROYAL SEAMSTRESS in a similar spot. ROYAL SEAMSTRESS gets an 8-pound weight shift in her favor, so use both runners in the final leg. I BELIEVE IN MAGIC changed tactics two starts back and led until late, then she was ‘a bit headstrong’ while wide on the backstretch, ranged up for the stretch drive but flattened out in her most recent start.

      Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
      LRL 5th Race: 2, 3
      LRL 6th Race: 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, 9, 10
      LRL 7th Race: 4, 6
      LRL 8th Race: 3, 5, 7
      Cost: $42

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Fair Grounds - Race #1
#2 Mo Echos Get a look at him ahead of this one, but he's not meeting a whole lot on paper and might be live enough to see out this trip at first asking.
#3 Running Faith Tactical type stretches out with what might be enough speed to find a spot right up top in a race without a whole lot of pace. Forward trip keeps him in the mix.
#5 Custom Ruby The two-back race at least showed a hint of mild promise, so I wonder if he can land a share here by maybe getting back to that one.
Race Summary Mo Echos is probably going to get bet for a capable team in a soft spot, but I don't think he's going to have to be a star to land this one.
        Fair Grounds - Race #6
#6 Huntleigh She was pretty flat in that last one, but it could serve as a springboard to something better in this second start off a four-month break, and she is otherwise not far removed from some competitive form. Expecting better.
#3 Slam Diego Think she's going to get a really good run of things in a race with a couple forward players lined up further toward the outside, and she looks like a good fit with this crew for her local debut.
#2 Diamonds Joy She's capable of something far better than that last one, and she should be in a pretty good spot on the turn to make a run at the quicker players turning for home. Wouldn't argue too hard with you.
Race Summary Huntleigh has some midrange price appeal if you're expecting better, as she ran a few races here last season that class up nicely with this group.
        Fair Grounds - Race #8
#3 Copper Moon Her form went sour last spring, but she's back fresh with some pretty compelling form on her page on her better days. Hoping she's ready to fire a good one off the bench.
#8 Emilyhasherturn Pace has handled the top choice a couple times in common races, but I think you get a better price up top with with similar running styles. Obvious danger.
#5 Hey Madalyn Claire Would want her on the stretch plays with a couple of OK finishing tries on her page. Could be a grinding finisher late with some hope if all the pace battles early and comes apart late.
Race Summary Copper Moon is up against a race shape I don't love, but I think the price will be solid enough to see if she can fire fresh.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Laurel Park - Race #1
#1 BOSS MODE (7-2) ‘Cruised’ to one-mile maiden win, steps up, draws rail on cutback to 7F.
#2 IN HONOR OF JEFF (10-1) Went to knees at break, sustained wide rally to win two back at this level.
#8 STICKTOTHESYSTEM (9-5) Beat five rivals at 1-1/16 miles who have yet to top a 30 Beyer on dirt.
Race Summary BOSS MODE ‘cruised clear in-hand’ in a maiden romp off similar rest and offers better value of an uncoupled entry for trainer Brittany Russell. His sire, Holy Boss, was a Grade 1-placed and Grade 2-winning long sprinter. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 2/1, 2, 8/ALL trifecta.
          Laurel Park - Race #3
#1 VALLEYSHARK (6-1) Had good tune-up, returns to winning surface, sheds weight, draws rail.
#2 ECUMENICAL (9-5) Big move forward in win, ran as fast as $20k optional claimer on the same card.
#4 MINISTER (5-1) Ascending speed figures, hit board in 4 of last 5 short sprints on the main track.
Race Summary VALLEYSHARK dueled to the stretch before the deep closers arrived in an otherwise useful turf marathon off an eight-month layoff. He rallied 4-wide in the stretch in his debut upset but the runner-up is currently 1-for-33. He still offers enough value for a win and place bet. Also play 1-2 and 1-4 exactas.
          Laurel Park - Race #4
#6 RERUN TABLE (2-1) Gets class relief, should sit ideal stalking trip in speed-laden field.
#2 TIPMANEE (9-5) Returns to level of game, front-end victory, shortens up, sheds 8 pounds.
#7 FIESTA LA LUNA (8-1) Awakened in third start for Gonzalez, adds value to gimmick wagers.
Race Summary RERUN TABLE showed a passing gear in her 4F debut and that could come in handy as she runs for a claiming tag for the first time. She continues to work well over the track and wears blinkers for the first time. Bet to win and place and play 6-2 and 6-7 exactas.

SPICY BUBBA - Has discovered a soft spot today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 FORTUNATE MISSION (ML=9/5), #2 JUST FANCY FREE (ML=3/1), #1 FLY CHIKKA (ML=4/1),

FORTUNATE MISSION - November 6th is the last time we've seen this filly around. Have to be a little bit leery. This pony ran a substandard speed figure last time around the track. She shouldn't run much better and will likely get beat in today's race running that number. JUST FANCY FREE - Never really did much at all in the last race on Oct 22nd. Hard to wager on today. FLY CHIKKA - That was just not a very good exhibition in the last race. No picnic to bet on any horse in a short distance race at 4/1 when she hasn't shown any successful efforts in sprints in the last couple months.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #5 SPICY BUBBA to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

                  # 5 VUELVE JOU 4/1
                  # 3 IL CORSARO 15/1
EL SOSPECHOSO has a strong shot to take this race. With a sound rider who has won at a very good 19 percent rate over the last month. This has to be one of the top choices. Ought to come out solid - I have liked the way this horse has moved quickly to the lead recently. Opposing a much less demanding group than last time out. VUELVE JOU - Hard to pass on this horse with Figueroa in the irons. Look for a reliable outing with the class drop. IL CORSARO - Last time out, this horse faced a tougher bunch. Win percentage one of the most favorable in this group.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 6 WE MISS ARLINGTON 3/1
                    # 5 FATHER GOOSE 12/1
                    # 3 CHARCO 4/1
WE MISS ARLINGTON looks to be a strong contender. With Murrill uptop him, this gelding will most likely be able to break out sharply in this race. Looks decent for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races recently. CHARCO - Boasts solid speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Is a definite contender - given the 89 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race.

                      Tampa Bay Downs - Race #7 - Post: 3:29pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $29,000 Class Rating: 88

                      Rating:

                      #5 ARIANA VALENTINA (ML=5/1)
                      #8 LOUISE BROOKS (ML=20/1)
#12 SHE FLED THE SCENE (ML=15/1)

ARIANA VALENTINA - This mare runs very well off of a layoff. LOUISE BROOKS - Ran against the boys in her last race on October 8th. Spieth drops her down to this class level. You don't need too much more from the pp lines to believe this horse will be tough to beat at this level. Finished out of the money last out at Presque Isle Downs, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 20/1 makes me think she's got a chance. SHE FLED THE SCENE - Last workout was the second fastest of the day. Unquestionably on edge for a good one today.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 MRS. KATZ (ML=3/1), #10 TIKI BAR (ML=7/2), #7 CLASSY DISPOSITION (ML=4/1),

MRS. KATZ - Can't play this morning-line choice off the extended vacation. TIKI BAR - Just don't believe she is offering enough value at the expected odds. CLASSY DISPOSITION - Hard to bet on at 4/1 odds after the most recent outings.
