Hawthorne Racecourse has an 8-race card with the first post at 1:00 PM CST. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 5, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 5 (2:20 PM CST)

1-Sleazy Rockin (5/2)-Left from the 2-hole versus this kind, got an efficient trip, and posted a win. Logical choice and could be a similar journey away from another picture.
7-Maypeal (7/2)-Had its 4-race win steak snapped in last, leaving from the 8-hole was an issue. Will look for Brandon Bates to not get hung the mile this time and is a player with a better trip.
9-Rusted BB (5-1)-Stayed inside and was shuffled back as in 10-lengths back at the half. Rolled home in 58.2 and was wide down the lane. Came a close 4th, was 1-length back, and could be in the hunt if lands in a close-up seat off the gate. Knows how to win, did well Downstate, and should be a healthy price.

Race 6 (2:20 PM CST)

2-Bluebird Bella (10-1)-Has shown some life and improved with the switch to driver Matthew Avenatti. Has been compromised with softer fractions and this race could set up differently.
3-Midnight Prowler (7-1)-The freshman filly makes her 4th lifetime start and brought early speed with her in the last race. Finished a good 2nd leaving from post 7 and looks ready to break her maiden.
9-Fox Valley Reba (5-1)-Looking for Travis Seekman to be aggressive off the car. Can be a player with a close-up seat. The VanWinkle barn has been clicking and when Seekman steers for this outfit he posts 23% winners.

Race 7 (2:40 PM CST)

1-R Buddy Boy (9/2)-Improved in last, stayed inside and did pace the 2nd half in 57.1 to cash a 3rd place check. Facing the same kind and starts from the same post. Kyle Husted has 1-move to work with and needs to push the button at the right time.
5-Mr Ain't Goin (9/5)-Camera shy colt is often in the mix and raced evenly after shipping in from Kentucky. Was off a month between starts and could be sitting on a big try but will offer no value.

Race 8 (3:00 PM CST)

6-Roan By Design (7/2)-Went a 56.1 back half and came off a sick scratch. This will be the 2nd race since shipping back from Dayton and looks like a main player.
8-Two Bean Dream (4-1)-Beat this kind off an efficient trip and drew off down the lane. The post helps the price and can also win coming off cover. Mike Oosting takes the lines this time, and when driving for the Tom Simmons barn they post 30% winners.

Oaklawn Park’s 2025-26 racing season begins with a 10-race card this Friday, Dec. 12. If history repeats itself, expect some big prices across the board. On opening day last year, only one favorite won and the average win mutuel was $21.40. The 50-cent Pick 3s on the card yielded an average payout of $500. Here’s a look at the mid-card Pick 3 encompassing the featured $150,000 Advent Stakes for 2-year-olds. Our suggested play is a $1 ticket that costs $36.

OP 6th race (3:53 p.m. EST) -- THE THUNDERER, the only two-time winner at 1-1/8 miles in this crowded starter allowance, fits the longshot profile. He can save ground from the rail, summon his top race (86 Beyer) in a near miss at Oaklawn in February and enhance trainer Greg Compton’s resume that includes four consecutive winners off the claim in April with 30-60 days rest. The well-traveled MY NOBLE KNIGHT returns to the scene of back-to-back route victories that triggered an 8/3-3-1 record since April while racing once a month. He got first run on a wave of closers two starts back, but he drifted in the final furlong at Churchill Downs and finished second in a starter allowance. KEEN CAT finished behind MY NOBLE KNIGHT in a fast-paced 7F sprint at Churchill, but he advanced inside on the turn, checked out of contention and recovered to finish well. He posted a career-best 95 Beyer at Oaklawn in a long-distance romp with Francisco Arrieta, last year’s leading rider, aboard. MONEY RUN met nine next-out winners in four starts to close his 2024 season. He went wire-to-wire twice this year at one mile and can carry his speed far if he gets early position from post 12.

OP 7th race (4:22 p.m. EST) -- YASMIN’S :47.1 workout over the track November 28 was a full second faster than 79 of 84 others at 4F. She is a must use in this 6F MSW sprint. Two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer Brad Cox unveils rail-sitting EAGLE DANCE off a series of strong works. Cox wins at 27-percent with 2-year-olds but he is 3-for-28 at Oaklawn with first-time starters the last 2 years, with 21 of those runners being dismissed at 5-1 odds or less. AMERICAN MISSY also has a solid foundation of 5F works at Oaklawn, albeit at a much better price. She is by multiple Grade 1-placed American Freedom (3-8, $705k). SPLENDID SONG will get a lot of play off a well-bet, runner-up finish at Keeneland; however, the race came back weak with 7/0-0-1 follow-up efforts and an average 38 Beyer from those who ran on conventional dirt.

OP 8th race (4:52 p.m. EST) -- BOCA BEACH CLUB was hustled while wide on the backstretch, reeled in the free-running favorite and pulled away with authority in a debut win at Hawthorne. He is the top pick in the featured $150,000 Advent Stakes but one of many to consider in the final leg of the Pick 3. DIRTY RICH returns to the main track for the first time since July, when he shook a duel and repelled eventual Breeders’ Cup Juvenile runner-up Mr. A.P. He sheds the blinkers off a two-month freshening. WALTER THE MASON looked good in winning the Zia Park Juvenile, sprinting to a clear backstretch lead and finding gears as needed in a 16-1 upset. Morning-line favorite SPUN D M C ‘offered little resistance’ on the lead in a four-horse stakes race, but the cutback to 5-1/2F should help.

Fair Grounds - Race #3

#10 Mardi Gras Empire	Think this is a fair enough spot to bring him back in to try winners off the layoff, and something like the graduation run back in January might keep him in the picture.
#1 Social Solution	Long layoff is a real concern -- he hasn't been out since May 2024 -- but both of his turf route tries were pretty sharp, and he feels like an OK fit with this group if he comes back running.
#7 Same Play	Wouldn't be any surprise to see him land this one, as he has some dangerous pace and has been in with better company in those recent starts. Turf is a question still.
Race Summary	Mardi Gras Empire and Social Solution both return off pretty long layoffs, but I think they're both in pretty reasonable spots for their return runs, and I'll lean on them to get me through this one.

Fair Grounds - Race #4

#5 Heavenly Beliefs	He was even money in the debut try in Illinois-bred stakes company, but he packed it up pretty early in that October run and now returns for a fairly cheap tag. Could be better spotted today.
#6 Deckhand	Get a look at him in the paddock and on the track ahead of this, but there isn't a whole lot of compelling form on paper in this one, so he won't need to be a star for the level to share in this spot.
#4 Our Standard	He's another fresh face who could make some noise here, and he figures to take some cash with a couple of pretty forward works to his credit.
Race Summary	Heavenly Beliefs probably has a little bit of upside while trying this kind of spot at second asking, and he seems likely to offer a better price than he did in the debut run.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#7 Dromas	He may still offer a mildly playable price after beating some of these last time out, and he's one of a few with similar baseline efforts in a fun edition of this race.
#3 Liken	Reliable form has kept him in the mix with most of these, and he should find a great trip while tracking up close at a local mile trip that advantages that kind of run.
#4 Wabash	Think his better stuff keeps him right there, but I think you'd want to see something a bit better from him at even money last time out. Capable of better at a nicer number today?
Race Summary	Didn't even mention #8 Jovie G, an obvious player who could get a wide run, in a fun race for the annual Alabama-bred spotlight here. Slight edge to Dromas, but many of them are right there with one another, so trust your gut and make sure you get a fair number wherever you land.

Oaklawn Park - Race #1

#3 JOLLY JOLENE (7-2)	Met eventual G-2 winner in debut, tracked duel when third at 7F but didn’t change leads.
#6 QUALITY AMI (6-1)	Rallied for second at 6F, dam produced two graded stakes-winning routers.
#5 ROCKIN ROBIN (2-1)	Earned field’s top speed fig when third as the lone entrant to run 1-1/16 miles.
Race Summary	JOLLY JOLENE disputed the pace for a quarter mile in her 6F debut, then benefited from a pace battle when she rallied for third at 7F in her second start. She finished behind Bella Ballerina, who won the Grade 2 Golden Rod Stakes next out, and Debbie Doll, who followed with a six-figure MSW victory. Her sire, Girvin, was a multiple graded stakes-winning router and her dam’s siblings are 5-for-14 as 2-year-olds and 19/3-3-2 overall going a route of ground. Bet to win and place and play 3-5, 3-6 and 3-7 exactas.

Oaklawn Park - Race #3

#1 RIDDLE SOLVER (10-1)	Stretch drift proved costly in comeback, puts the blinkers back on.
#2 FIRST PLAYER (4-1)	Pressed and chased odds-on winner around the track for $80k off claim.
#8 GUN RUNNER CHARLIE (5-2)	Returns to town dramatically improved from when he left in February.
Race Summary	RIDDLE SOLVER finished behind three next-out winners – who currently stand 55/9-13-7 with $888k in earnings – when he ran long for the first time in May. He returned six months later in a similar spot to today and re-rallied in the stretch after he drifted to the 7-path and bumped a rival nearing the lane. He will need his top effort in this field, but the price is right for a win and place bet.

Oaklawn Park - Race #10

#2 ROCKIN THE LANE (7-2)	Third in ‘muddy’ debut at Churchill in time that equaled MSW boys.
#5 BRUNIA (5-2)	Led long way in improved second start that produced two follow-up winners.
#3 APPEALING MISCHIEF (10-1)	'‘Moved up’ far behind Rockin The Lane after slow start.
Race Summary	ROCKIN THE LANE made an inside bid in the final eighth but was ‘fended off’ as she finished between the three favorites in third. The winning time for the 2-year-old fillies matched that of a Maiden Special Weight sprint for the boys on the same card. Bet to win and place.

3^rd race [NY, Alw 81000 N1X, 7F] – (2) Rina’s Revenge (D) was bet down from 11-1 to 5-1 last time when she was fifth in a NY-bred stakes race. She was a debut winner and then tried the Frizette (G1). (6) St. Brigid’s Cross (C) took late money to go from 5-1 to 3-1, ran second all race against open company, finished well clear of the rest of the field, and got claimed for $75,000 by Brad Cox. (5) Pinky Brier was the front-end winner of the race with St. Brigid’s Cross and now has won her last two starts also for Cox. (4) Lady Rose ran against open company in both of her starts including a maiden $75,000 win by almost six lengths.

4^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (4) She’s a Gemma was second by a head in her debut in February at Tampa Downs and then was off until last month when she set the pace. (5) Trango Tower came back from a three month layoff to make her first start since moving to the barn of Linda Rice and finished third. (2) My Sherrona moves from turf to dirt where in January she was second in the Busanda. (6) Tatania made her debut at 7-1 for Chad Brown last month at Churchill Downs and ran fifth.

5^th race [Md 50000, 6 ? F] – (4) Alias returned from eight months off to set the pace, finished third at Keeneland in October, and was claimed for $50,000 by Linda Rice. (2) Magnanimous Max made his second start following 10 months off and ran fifth at 3-1. Blinkers go on with first-time Lasix. (9) Frostelle comes back from a 16 month layoff and when last seen was third in a maiden special weight at Saratoga. (1) Pop Goes the Wiz is a first-time starter for a trainer that is good with debut runners.

8^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6 ? F] – (5) Party in the Army hit the board in all starts which includes two state-bred stakes and last month missed the win by a nose after having the lead. (6) Music in Motion moves from turf to dirt after his debut at Aqueduct when he was fourth at 5-1. (8) Pure Mischief set the pace in his second start at the Big A three weeks ago. (7) Central Spirit has a long series of workouts ahead of his first start.
