Sharp bettor backs side before line moves on Raiders-Eagles game

        LV REVIEW JOURNAL SUBSCRIPTION

A sharp bettor at the Westgate SuperBook wagered on the Raiders as 12?-point underdogs to the Eagles before Philadelphia’s ugly 22-19 overtime loss to the Chargers on “Monday Night Football.”

“Maybe the Raiders will be down 13 and Pete Carroll will kick a field goal to cover,” SuperBook vice president of risk Ed Salmons said. “Who knows?”

The Raiders kicked a field goal as time expired Sunday to cover as 8-point home underdogs in a 24-17 loss to the Broncos.

The line dropped to as low as 10? on Sunday’s game at Philadelphia after the Eagles lost and failed to cover for the third straight game before moving back up to 11? and as high as 12 at BetMGM and Caesars Sportsbook.

The betting public is all over Philadelphia, with 76 percent of the spread bets at STN Sports on the Eagles (8-5, 7-6 against the spread). Former Philadelphia quarterback Kenny Pickett is expected to make his first start for the Raiders in place of injured starter Geno Smith.

“There was a little downward push in the line when it was announced Smith was out,” Red Rock Resort sportsbook director Chuck Esposito said. “But since that time it’s been extremely one-sided in favor of the Eagles. We will be huge Raiders fans from our side of the counter.”

Boomer’s Sportsbook director of trading Nick Bogdanovich rates Pickett about the same as Smith.

“I don’t think there’s too much of a drop-off between him and Pickett at this stage,” he said. “I don’t know if it’s an upgrade, but it certainly isn’t much one way or another.

“I would imagine the public will be all over the Eagles. I would assume we’ll need the Raiders. Unless the sharps really pound the Raiders, we’ll definitely need them.”

The Raiders have lost seven straight games and 11 of 12 but are on a 4-4 run against the spread.

“You watch the Eagles and it’s hard for them to win by a lot of points,” Salmons said. “We’ll probably need the Raiders to win straight up because they’ll money line parlay the Eagles to death and tease them.” How low can you go?

The total is the lowest on the NFL Week 15 betting board at 38?.

“For a spread that high, the total is as low as you can be,” Salmons said.

At STN Sports, 80 percent of the bets are on the over, despite the fact that the weather forecast calls for temperatures in the low 30s with potential snow and wind gusts up to 25 mph.

The Raiders are the league’s lowest-scoring team at 15.1 points per game and the Eagles are on a 5-0 under run.

“I think the low total is more pointed to the Raiders’ incompetence on offense,” Salmons said. “But it’s sports. Who thought the Raiders would beat the Patriots now looking back.”

The Raiders (2-11, 5-8 ATS) upset the Patriots 20-13 as 2?-point underdogs at New England in their season opener before losing and failing to cover four straight. Props

Eagles quarterback Jalen Hurts is -124 at Caesars to score a touchdown and Philadelphia running back Saquon Barkley is -115 to score a touchdown.

Hurts is -162 to throw under 1? touchdown passes and -173 to not throw an interception after throwing a career-high four picks in Monday’s loss.

Pickett is -138 to throw a touchdown pass and -154 to throw an interception.

Was waiting to see if this line would move back towards Detroit this week but it looks like it will continue to head towards the Rams. Lock it in, Good to -6.5.
So it's the Matthew Stafford Revenge Game, Part 3. But forget the narrative for a second, because the reality of this game is all about the casualty report in the Detroit secondary.
The Lions are walking into SoFi Stadium with a secondary that is completely decimated. We are talking cluster injuries galore.
Last week, they lost their best defender, Brian Branch, to a torn Achilles. He is gone. Their other starting safety, Kerby Joseph? Gone since October. Their top corner, Terrion Arnold? Out for the season. They are literally down to their 4th and 5th string safeties to try and stop a Sean McVay offense.
That is like bringing a knife to a nuclear war.
And McVay is going to exploit the specific weaknesses that Detroit already had beforethe injuries. The Lions play Man Coverage at the highest rate in the NFL. Well, guess what the Rams destroy? Man Coverage. They rank #3 in EPA per attempt and #2 in completion percentage against it.
And it gets worse. The Rams use Play Actionmore than any team in the league (38% of dropbacks). The Lions' defense ranks 28th in yards per attempt allowed against Play Action. It's why we loved our 5% Play on the Dallas Cowboys Team Total last game against this Lions defense and cashed it easily.
So you also have a Rams offense that is elite in the Red Zone this year (#3 TD rate), facing a depleted defense that allows quarterbacks to hold the ball far too long. Stafford is going to have all day to pick apart these backups.
In the playoffs last year, the Rams moved the ball but choked in the Red Zone. This year? They are finishing drives. This isn't a matchup Dan Cambell and the Lions want at this point with their season on the line. I don't blame them. They are going to have to take multiple chances in this game to try and keep pace with the Rams offense and that will lead to extra possessions and likely more scoring for the Rams. While I certainly like the OVER in the game, I believe the Rams defense will get more stops and allow the offense to win this game by double digits. Lay the points. Give me Rams-5.5 to -6.5

                  Bob Balfe:

                  Texans -10.5 over Cardinals
The Cardinals hit the road, already eliminated from the playoffs, facing off against a Houston team that is in a good spot now, but their goal is to win the division, as they are a game behind the Jaguars and can’t afford to lose games they are favored to win, especially in their own building. Arizona has endured injuries across the board this year, as they are on their backup quarterback. The running game never had a chance to hit stride with James Connor and Trey Benson landing on IR early in the year. The offensive line has a few starters on IR, and today will be without Paris Johnson and Evan Brown. It’s hard to win on the road without a full arsenal of running backs and without a full complement of offensive linemen. Arizona is also without a few starters in the secondary. Houston is much healthier at this point in the season and has the more talented roster on both sides of the football. Look for Houston to run the ball with Woody Marks, which will set up CJ Stroud to find his receivers. Take the Texans.

                  Jaguars -14 over Jets
The Jags are in a dog fight and currently hold the top spot in the AFC South. It goes without saying that they must take care of business at home against an eliminated team with all kinds of injuries. The Jets will start Brady Cook this afternoon as he makes his first NFL start. It’s unfortunate for Cook that his receivers’ room looks like a MASH unit. The Jets are not in much better shape on defense, as they traded away many secondary players, along with players on IR. Azareye’h Thomas will not play today, making New York very thin at cornerback. Jacksonville QB Trevor Lawrence must take advantage. I don’t see Brady Cook getting through the afternoon without a few major mistakes that cost his team dearly. The Jags are better on both sides of the ball and should win by double-digits. Take the Jags.

                  Rotation # 462
                  Bears -7.5 over Browns
Browns QB Shedeur Sanders only has a few games under his belt, and it doesn’t help that the offensive line is missing so many key players. Will the center-to-QB exchange be clean today? The Browns are also missing Wyatt Teller and Jack Conklin, in addition to Cam Robinson being a no-show at practice with a knee injury. Bad football teams with young QB’s on the road with makeshift offensive lines typically don’t do well. The Bears are in an interesting spot: a few weeks ago, they were the top team in the NFC. Now, a loss will have them on the outside of the playoffs looking in. Chicago must win today. It will be cold today, nothing either team is not used to, but it will feel a lot colder for a Cleveland team whose playoff dreams were busted weeks ago. Chicago should run the ball with D’Andre Swift and Kyle Monangau, which will allow Caleb Williams to find any of his capable receivers. The Bears are better on both sides of the football and, over the course of 60 minutes, should do enough to win by double digits. Take the Bears.

                  Rotation # 469
                  Commanders +2.5 over Giants
It’s been a tough year for both teams, but it’s still an NFC East rivalry game, so the players still have pride to play for. The Commanders dominated the Giants in the opener this season. New York got rid of their head coach and made a switch at Quarterback. The Giants also lost running back Cam Skattabo for the season, and on a cold and windy day in East Rutherford, NJ, nothing about their current running game excites you. The Giants are coming off their bye week after a MNF loss to the Patriots in a game where the Giants ran the ball in a boring attempt to get out of the game at full strength. Jaxson Dart made a few silly runs that almost got his head knocked off, so I expect the coaching staff to have him tone it down to keep him healthy for next year. The Commanders have more of an identity as their coaching staff nears the end of their second full season. QB Marcus Mariota isn’t much of a downgrade from Jayden Daniels, as he has the experience to run the same offense. Terry McLaurin is always good for big plays down the field. Deebo Samuel is dealing with an illness, but should play today. I like the Commanders’ running game and passing game a bit more. The Giants have too many injuries to the defensive front-seven for my liking. Take the Commanders.

                  Titans/49ers Over 44.5
The 49ers were hit hard with the injury bug this season, but Kyle Shanahan and his staff did a tremendous job to have them in the driver’s seat to make the playoffs. The Titans have the worst record in football and fired their coach midseason, but they have a future with QB Cam Ward. Growing pains are natural for just about every young QB who steps into a starting role. Ward will have a good chance to make big plays today against a 49ers defense that is missing a lot of talent due to injury. The San Francisco front seven has been without Nick Bosa and Fred Warner, and today will also be without Sam Okuayinonu. There aren’t many players participating today who can get to the quarterback. More time means more chances for big gainers down the field. Tennessee should cash in on a few plays. The 49ers offense is well-balanced, running the ball, and has one of the most talented receiver rooms in football. The Titans don’t have much talent in the secondary due to injuries and a few midseason trades. Brock Purdy should be able to find busted coverages for big yardage. Both defenses have glaring weaknesses, making the total a decent play. Look for a higher-scoring contest. Take the Over. We look forward to seeing you on Monday at 4 PM EST.
