Florida Derby winner Tappan Street returns from a nine-month layoff as an overwhelming favorite in a $62,000 allowance optional claiming race at Gulfstream Park this Friday, Dec. 19. He could be one of several odds-on favorites in the Pick 4 sequence that spans races 5 through 8. Here’s a closer look and a suggested $2 Pick 4 ticket that costs $36:

GP 5th race (2:27 p.m. EST) -- REZASROLEX will try to the put the finishing touches on an unbeaten 4-year-old season and surpass $250,000 in lifetime earnings with his eight win in a row, spanning 18 months. But he will have to do it in a speed-laden 5F sprint, his first start on turf since a one-mile maiden win at Betfair Park more than two years ago. MY VOODO DOLL is winless in five starts this year, but he looms a potential upsetter with two 80-plus Beyers in two starts at this distance on the Gulfstream lawn. He rallied to a 3-length maiden win over the likes of Rebel With A Clue -- who sped off to a maiden win in 56.36 here last Saturday -- then he steadied in traffic on the turn and recovered with a wide run for third as the pace-setter back-pedaled last out. SABIAN also merits a second look in his turf debut off a 1-1/2-year layoff. When last seen, he pressed REZASROLEX on the inside after a bumpy start, only to fade in the stretch. He is working forwardly for trainer Victor Barboza Jr., who is on a 22-for-97 run with new acquisitions.

GP 6th race (3:00 p.m. EST) -- GYPSY makes her first start on a synthetic track, but she is today’s solo play after three in-the-money finishes in MSW company. She rallied for second as a debut favorite on the turf, then broke outward on a sloppy track but willingly chased the 3-1 winner until mid-stretch in her second go-round. She took on the boys last out and dueled with next-out MSW runner-up Cup of Coffee (62 Beyer) before the 4-to-5 favorite passed by both of them for the victory. (If Gypsy scratches, use first-time starter MUST BE THE SHOES in her place.)

GP 7th race (3:30 p.m. EST) -- TAPPAN STREET, the last horse to defeat Kentucky Derby, Belmont and Travers winner Sovereignty, makes his first start since that win nine months ago in the Florida Derby. He has a strong foundation of workouts for trainer Brad Cox, who excels with layoff types, gets Lasix for the first time and should sit an ideal trip with STEPPE and FLYING LIAM ensuring a solid pace. SOLO VENTURI ‘sustained pursuit’ while 4-wide in the stretch after razor sharp winner Thoughtthatcounts rallied to win a six-figure optional claiming mile at Churchill Downs. He adds value to the Pick 4 ticket.

GP 8th race (4:00 p.m. EST) -- ROXY ‘shook free’ to a repeat victory over mid-60 Beyer type Maerdama, now steps up in class in lieu of her third consecutive win for different connections. BEAUTIFUL CRAZY has speed and can use it well as the light weight in the field in her second start off a six-month layoff. She couldn’t catch Vindicate Cha Cha (5-18, $192k), who led through the opening half-mile in 12 of her last 14 starts. HOT CARGO has tactical speed, plays to a steady beat and returns to her claim level, but she’s 0-for-13 on the synthetic track.

Fair Grounds - Race #2

#1 Joey D	He wasn't pushed along late after a brief track-and-fade effort in the mile debut on the main track, but he might be tighter with that race under his belt while flashing a little tracking pace on the cutback.
#5 Thebabeslayer	Wouldn't argue that hard with anyone landing here, as he's bringing some pretty reliable turf form that is probably better than it was the last time he ran short. The one to beat.
#9 Vitruvius	Debuter meets a couple of interesting players with experience, but I wouldn't be surprised to see him be live enough to make a dent at first asking. Check him out ahead of this.
Race Summary	Joey D has some upside after fading in the debut run on the dirt, and I'm hoping the price will be playable enough with Thebabeslayer likely to command some cash.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#6 Happy Kiera	Taking a little shot here as this one gets to turf and adds blinkers and Lasix for this second start after a pace-and-stop run at first asking. Could see her sticking around a lot better today.
#7 Auntie Vodka	Forward player has just idled late in both starts, but something like the last one would probably be enough to keep her in the mix with this crew. Price gets shorter today.
#3 Veracious	She's an interesting new face here, and she goes for a capable team with a couple of forward-looking works along the way. Take a look.
Race Summary	Feels like #9 Constructively should be on the serious plays, too, but Happy Kiera has some price appeal after a dull debut run. Lots of new changes for her in this second start that I hope will wake her up.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#10 Platinum Midnight	A lot of that dark form on her page came with much better than she's finding here, and she showed a little bit of one-paced interest in the comeback run last out. In the mix at a midrange price if she can build on that one.
#9 Francesnfriends	She ran a good one off the bench when getting involved earlier than she had in her previous races, and any move forward makes her tough here.
#1 Wosiemaks	Her last was decent when she finished in front of Francesnfriends, and she seems tactical enough to find an OK spot on the fence here. One of the ones.
Race Summary	Could make a case for a few of these, but I think one of the top two will land it, as they both bring some reasonable upside in their respective second starts off the layoff and seem logical enough off the comeback runs.

The closest rivals behind her were 6/2-1-1 in six-figure maiden races next out, all with 70+ Beyers. Make a win and place wager on today’s Best Bet and play a 6/1, 7/1 Pick 3.

Gulfstream Park - Race #2

#7 BRAVO KITTEN (3-1)	Can’t seem to avoid slow starts, late-running threat if she does.
#1 GOLDEN VALLEY (6-5)	Tracked moderate pace in Sept. 15 win, drops off D’Angelo claim.
#2 SMOOTH CLARET (8-1)	Failed to sustain bid in longer route, moves outside in.
Race Summary	Five of the eight entrants have won on a synthetic track and at this distance. BRAVO KITTEN rallied for minor awards in three of her last four starts on the surface, but she was compromised by another troubled start and slow pace at this level last out. Bet to win and place and play a 7/1, 2/ALL trifecta.

Gulfstream Park - Race #3

#1 SISTER MARJORIE (9-2)	Dropped back on turn, ‘kept on’ to finish ahead of easy next-out winner.
#3 AWESOME CAMPAIGN (6-5)	Shuffled back, rallied 5-wide, ran second at odds-on in lone dirt try.
#7 RIDDLE ME KHOZY (5-1)	Stepped it up for final work, watch odds for high-percentage first-out barn.
Race Summary	Canada-based trainer William Tharrenos has a keen sense of where to run his horses. He is 9-for-20 with a $4.24 ROI the last two years when he enters them to run on dirt. Three of the winners returned boxcar prices at Gulfstream, so take a shot on rail-sitting SISTER MARJORIE to continue the trend in her second start for this high-percentage barn. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-7 exacta box.

My pick in this event is TEST PILOT. Has run very well when running a dirt sprint race. I like Ferrer on this gelding to give him a very strong chance to hit the wire first. DUNDIE - Is a contender - given the 96 Equibase speed fig from his most recent race. Has garnered formidable Equibase Speed Figures in dirt sprint races in the past. HARTFUL HOPE - When Tapara and Zielinski join forces on horses the ROI has been wonderful at +40. Mare took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. Zielinski drops her down to this class. You don't need too much more knowledge to think this animal has a shot at this level. This animal didn't run well on a track listed as good in her last race around the track at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. You may want to toss out that performance. KOZEM - Last time this filly ran today's trip she got a speed fig that would probably win today's race. This rider/handler duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +57. The latest speed rating of 85 is the best last race speed fig in the field.

I've got to go with VICTOR VALLEY. She has been running quite well and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the best in this group of horses. Should be given a chance for this event if only for the competitive speed rating garnered in the last race. With a nice class fig average of 82, has one of the top class advantages in this group. LOTTA ALPHA - Could beat this group given the 60 speed rating recorded in her last outing. Has solid speed figures and has to be considered for a bet in this contest.

HARBOR OF GOLD - This jock and handler's equines have been generating a lucrative ROI. UNCLE MONEY - After the race aboard this horse on November 6th, the jock is going to 'know' the gelding much better. This gelding won at this distance on July 16th and was at a higher class than today. I like a thoroughbred that manages to finish in the money as often as this gelding. Almost always in the money so don't leave him out of your exotic bets. Horse has improved at least two speed fig points in last two races. I look for that to continue to trend in a positive direction right here. This gelding's last speed figure is strong enough to score here, I'll play him back again today. Earnings per start is something that I think can be a very valuable handicapping aspect. This thoroughbred is ranked at the top of the list in this bunch. ROLLY - Always watch out for the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. OLE AUTHORITY - A winning percent like 32 is terrific for any rider/conditioner tandem. Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a strong effort on December 4th. Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. That was a strong win last time out. In my opinion has a good chance to repeat today.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - HARBOR OF GOLD - Looks like Demasi has been trying to find the right level for this horse. Took a big drop in class in last race, but returns to a similar class level in this affair. Pretty good indication he may win today.
