On September 19, in the Grade 2 Presque Isle Masters Stakes, Ellen Jay rallied from 12th early to finish second, with a career-best 108 Equibase Speed Figure. She won the Glen Cove last year, with jockey Flavien Prat riding her for the first time. He rode her a second time in the Presque Isle Masters. Prat is back today and is riding for trainer Brad Cox, who has a 35% win rate over the past two years.
Pondering (3) won the Grade 2 Bessarabian Stakes on November 8, like Ellen Jay, this was her first attempt on an all-weather surface. She earned a career-best figure of 101 and won the Kentucky Downs Preview Ladies Turf Sprint Stakes, where she posted a 100 figure. The North American leader for 2025, Irad Ortiz Jr., rode the filly for the first time and has won 28% of his races with trainer Brendan Walsh over the past two years. Between Ortiz and Prat (who is second in the 2025 jockey standings), Prat is only $350,000 behind, despite each earning more than $39 million this year. Watch these two jockeys compete over the final three weeks of the season, especially when they race in the same events as this year’s Inaugural Stakes.
Civetta (7), Ms. Tart (1), and Johanny (13) also have a chance of being contenders. Civetta has three wins, but is racing on the all-weather surface for the first time. Her last race on turf was on November 3 with a 107 figure. Ms. Tart has five wins in 11 races this year, including a Satin N Lace Stakes on an all-weather track on August 25, with a 101 figure, but she finished ninth in the Presque Isle Master. Johanny ran a career-best race, coming in second in the Autumn Day Stakes at this distance on turf. She could have a shot.

Making the move from Keeneland for today's event, I have to believe he's ready to run. This front-runner is cutting back in distance today. Should enhance his chances of winning. Earnings per start (EPS) is something that I think can be an important handicapping aspect. This entrant is ranked number 1 in this field. Came home fast last out at Keeneland. That type of move bodes well for his chances in this race. ARREST ME RED - It looks like Machado had to be in the know about this gelding on October 4th when riding him for the initial time. Back atop again today. Ward moves this animal here to Turfway Park from Keeneland. Looking at the horse's PPs, he has shown the ability to win at different tracks. Look for this one to go straight to the finish line at some decent odds right here. Ran fifth in last race, but not more than 5 from the lead at the end. JOE SHIESTY - Changes tracks from last out at Churchill Downs to here. Multiple wins at different tracks tell me this horse likes to switch it up, so that's a good sign. Lets try to beat the probable favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a decent race. WOUND UP - This gelding should give a good account of himself in today's event.

Scott Shapiro: GP's $318K Carryover/Mandatory Payout P6 Keys

After a stakes-laden Pegasus Preview Day Card at Gulfstream Park on Saturday, focus for horseplayers turns to the final day of the racing week in Hallandale Beach. This includes a mandatory payout in the Rainbow 6. The carryover rose to $318,560 yesterday after Wolfie’s Dynaghost set a track record during his dominant victory in the Fort Lauderdale to close the Saturday proceedings. Here are a few horses I like within the Pick 6 sequence that kicks off in Race 5 at 2:24 eastern time.

Race 6

This full field MSW event for 2YO fillies over the sod is relatively wide-open, but I like the chances of #2 Quality Street. The Blame filly debuted at Aqueduct back in November and was forced to alter course due to a horse who lost the rider early on. This unfortunately led to a wide voyage for the Michael Ryan owned runner at odds of nearly 40-1. Now, the Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee moves to a favorable inside draw and meets a field that lacks significant two-turn turf form thus far. I am expecting a big move forward in career start number 2 from this $100,000 Keeneland September 2024 purchase.

Play: #2 Quality Street (6-1 ML)

Race 8:

There is not that much early speed signed on in the Sunday feature, which gives #6 Silver Moonlight a big chance to make it three wins in a row on the class hike. The Liam’s Map filly is far from a need the lead type given the fact he has won back-to-back races from off the pace, but has also shown the ability to take advantage of things when no one else wants the lead. That very well could be the case in this $58,000 allowance at 1 1/16-miles on the grass. Jockey Micah Husbands has been on board the C2 Racing Stable filly in both of her last two starts and will be back aboard again. The fact the 4YO gal is 4 for 5 over this turf course certainly does not hurt her chances. A single for me in the Rainbow!

Play: #6 Silver Moonlight (5-2 ML)

Race 10:

My final play of the day comes in the finale where #6 Eton was made the 2-1-morning line favorite by oddsmaker Brian Nadeau. The Zilla Racing Stables gelding has hit the board in 3 of 4, but lost as the favorite last out and might not have things too easy on the front end under jockey Tyler Gaffalione. I am hopeful it sets things up for class dropper #1 Spirit of the Law. The Michael Dubb owned son of Tiz the Law was caught wide early in each of his last two starts against better in New York for trainer Mike Maker. Now, he moves inside where jockey Nik Juarez should be able to save coveted ground early and come with a strong run late. Hopefully, he takes to the Gulfstream Park sod since it his first local try. The price should be good enough to find out.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

Northfield Park begins the week with a 15-race card. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Clubs Scene (3-1)-Needs a smooth trip but fits with these and should be a player. Justin Irvine should have in play and has been competitive against some tough foes.
4-All Bets On Tex (7/2)-Shipped in from Dayton and took a picture in the 1st start in town. Likes to race near the top of the stack and that trip could be coming.
6-Boundtobefearless (7-1)-Cashed a small check against $30k claimers at DTN in a need race. Then requalified at DTN on 12/16 and is a threat with a hodgepodge field if 100%.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

3-Legacy Affair (9/2)-This mare likes to win, has been facing better at Dayton and has 6 pictures in 24 starts. Does do well at Nfld (18-7-2-2). Will look for a big try at a square price, and with the right trip could surprise.
7-Disgruntled Carl (6-1)-Competes against this kind and has posted wins. Does have gate speed but can also come off cover, and its versatility could be the winning edge.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

2-Brookview Bullet (3-1)-Drew off by 5 lengths going the back half in .55 with a 27.3 last quarter at DTN. This will be the 1st start at Nfld, has been facing better and could get the top and not look back.
4-Celtic Spirit N (4-1)-DTN shipper makes its 3 start at Nfld and was in too deep in the last 2 starts. Drops and Dan Noble steers for his 2nd straight race. He posts 32% winners when he drives for his wife Christi.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

2-Big Skewy N (7/2)-Comes off a scratch due to the weather and should be out and rolling off the car. Looks like a main player, has won 3 of 5 at Nfld and the 7/2 price probably isn't happening.
4-Spiritshappyending (7/2)-Has raced at Nfld 11 times and has 6 wins coming in the last 6 starts. The 3-year-old faces some older foes, and this will be a test. Chris Lems may try to get on the engine, if not a pocket ride behind the one above could work too.

Fair Grounds - Race #5

#1 All You	She showed a little life at Delta in the comeback run, and that could set her up for something better in this second start of the season. Needs better, but that's not out of the question today.
#5 My Other Half	She has flashed dangerous pace and just been unable to stay late in her two tries so far, but those suggest she should be in another good spot turning for home with every chance to seal the deal.
#4 Kin to the Wicked	She has shown a bit of versatility through her first two tries, and she may find herself in a really good spot while right up close to the splits.
Race Summary	All You might get a bit overlooked in a race that feels like it has a little bit of depth for the level -- even #8 It's Been Real is a major contender not listed above.

Fair Grounds - Race #6

#5 Improbable Dream	Debuter has to find two turns at first asking, but he isn't meeting a whole lot by way of proven form on paper here, and it wouldn't be a shock to see him land this out of the box. Check him out on the tote and track.
#9 Election Night	He stretches out in hopes that more leisurely route tempo may help him sustain his one-paced tracking style a bit better. As mentioned above -- this isn't the toughest spot, so maybe the new trip shakes him up enough to score.
#8 Liberty's Champion	Nothing from her in the debut going long here last month, but that should set her up for something better with that start under her belt. She's a player, but she's sure to be too short on the board thanks to the big-name barn.
Race Summary	Improbable Dream is not meeting a whole lot on paper in this spot, so I'm wondering if a fresh face may be the right guess here.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#2 Champlin	Slight edge in a deep race, as he has the pace to mix things up early on and has been in with some pretty tough groups over the last year. Better on the dirt, but he can play here.
#4 Mondogetsbuckets	Nothing from him in the Thanksgiving Classic last month, and he'll get his first try on the turf in this spot. Wouldn't be any surprise to see him handle this new footing and stay in the mix today.
#6 Heart Headed	He'll go for his third straight and second for the new team off the claim, and he just beat the top choice in their recent common meeting. Looks tough again.
Race Summary	Champlin is quick enough to find a good spot right up near the top in a race without a ton of committed early burn, and something like his last keeps him in the frame again.
