Scott Shapiro: Gulfstream's 20% Win Boost Plays for Saturday

Gulfstream Park on Saturday boasts a big card headlined by the Mr. Prospector (G3), featuring the return of White Abarrio. The son of Race Day last competed in the afternoons in late August in the Jockey Club Gold Cup (G1) since he was scratched prior to the running of the Breeders’ Cup. The race looks like a two-horse battle between he and Knightsbridge, so I will look elsewhere to use the 20% that Xpressbet and 1/ST BET customers will receive on all Win bets Saturday in Hallandale Beach up to $25. Just remember to register on the promotional landing page. Here are a few horses I like on the 11-race slate.

Race 6:

The Saturday Pick 6 kicks off with this MSW event for 2YOs going the one-turn mile over the main track where I like the chances quite a bit of morning line favorite #2 Boss Dylan. The $400k OBS April 2025 purchase debuted in a full field MSW going 6.5-furlongs at Churchill Downs in late November for trainer Brendan Walsh. In that first try, the Liam’s Map colt completely botched the start of the race, but ran extremely well from there considering. A gate-to-wire winner won the race for Brian Lynch, while Boss Dylan passed all, but one of his rivals to finish second. I do not always like backing horses with slow starts and big late runs on debut, but this guy looks serious. He retains Tyler Gaffalione and should love the added ground. Hopefully, a firster or two gets steamed and helps our price.

Race 9: Abundantia Stakes

The other stakes race on the Saturday agenda is this 5-furlong turf dash for fillies and mares where #6 Love Appeals was made the 2-1-ML favorite by oddsmaker Brian Nadeau. She has a shot off the freshening shipping in for Miguel Clement, as does 3-1-second choice #8 Moon Spun, who just won convincingly off a 13-month respite. Neither of them are outright tosses for me, but I greatly prefer the value #7 Le Amazonia offers. Now, I realize the daughter of Practical Joke is winless in 4 starts over the lawn, but she did finish second in two of those tries. Plus, in her most recent start on the grass on Halloween she ran better than her final fourth place finish would suggest. In that October 31 race over this surface and distance, Le Amazonia battled throughout before giving way to three rivals from off the pace. With less speed signed on in this one, I think the Victor Barboza Jr. trainee appears poised for a big effort near or on the front end. At her price, she is worth a swing, especially with a 20%-win bonus.

Race 11:

The Saturday finale is a first-level allowance event at two-turns over the grass and there is not much early speed signed on. The race shape is likely to benefit #4 Capturing. The daughter of More Than Ready makes her first start since early May for Hall of Famer Todd Pletcher. Her last race before the break is a complete toss since it was washed off the grass, but the prior two efforts should put her in the mix assuming she moves forward after nearly eight months of rest. She showed enough tactical speed in her two turf routes to think Johnny V will be aggressive off the layoff from an inside draw. Whether she makes the lead or sits just off, I like her chances to best this bunch off the break at a playable ML offering.

1st race – (8) Big Magic was two heads behind in third last time and can get a win here. (10) Whitethorn may be effective on turf. (3) Private Property will be a threat on her best try. (1) Motown Diva could respond positively to the stretchout. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-8-10.

3rd race – (3) Genuine Gomo seeks a third straight win and should get it while moving back to Tapeta. (1) Wannabeeloved looms a strong threat from the rail. (7) Secret Bagent Man should be effective at this level. (6) Giftedbydesign might wake up at this level. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-6-7.

5th race – (5) Walter Me Lad takes a big class drop and look best here. (1) Downing Street could pose a late threat here. (6) Pet Mat steps up in company and cannot be overlooked. (9) Frank’s Art fits with this group. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-6-9.

7th race – (2) Win for the Money has been racing in Grade 1 stakes and has a class edge here. (10) Relampago Verde was hurt by a wide trip last time. Will need better luck here. (1) Degree of Risk should be arriving on the scene in the final furlong. (4) Clever Mischief has been training nicely for his first start since March. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-10.

10th race – (2) Knightbridge looked sharp in a comeback win and can continue his winning ways. (1) White Abarrio probably wants more distance as he preps for the Pegasus. (7) Playmea Tune could be a threat on dirt. (6) Hold My Bourbon has speed and could hang around until the end. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-7.

1^st race [Md 35000 N3L, 6 ? F] – (2) Marajoline (A) went wide all race and rallied for third in a blanket finish in her return to the dirt. (6) Asking will drop down and cut back in distance for Bill Mott. (4) Doppio Espresso gets the services of leading rider Flavien Prat as she switches to dirt after three turf tries. (5) Lucky Lucky Me will make her debut with a fast workout showing.

6^th race [Clm 30000B, 1 mi] – (1) Free Dance (D) was bet down from 12-1 to 8-1, was third in the early going, had to race four wide, and finished fourth. (9) Golden Plate won a N2L claimer in October and then was overmatched in a pair of starter allowances. (10) Sergeant Capps won his last two starts moving from a $35,000 maiden to a N2L claiming race last month and was taken by Linda Rice for $30,000. (6) Analog Jones has been racing against better at Parx Racing and was claimed for $40,000 three races back.

7^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (4) Cara Fiore (A) finished second in her debut in a large field as the only first-time starter and ended up well clear of the rest of the field. (3) Three Sixty (A) bobbled at break, set the pace, and finished second far ahead of the others. (5) Saratoga Party missed by a neck in October in a race where the winner and the show horses came back to win their next starts. (7) Full of Tact was fourth in that same race with Saratoga Party.

11^th race [Clm 17500 N2L, 7F] – (2) Prince of Dance (B) broke through the gate and then ran second most of the race. (9) Last Man Standing won a maiden for $20,000 and then was fourth at this level last month for Linda Rice. (6) Nantz had the lead and finished third in a similar spot two races back. (4) Whitby comes back from a May layoff and when last seen was second ahead of a return winner.

Best bets: Cara Fiore (7^th); Prince of Dance (11^th). Best Value: Marajoline (1^st); Free Dance (6^th).

La Brea Stakes – Grade 1| Purse $300,000 | Seven Furlongs | Fillies, Three Years Old

Top winning contenders are Magnificat (10), Formula Rossa (9)

Analysis and Contenders:

Magnificat (10) finished second in her career on August 29, then won her second start on October 25. She ran fast, posting similar 93 and 92 Equibase Speed Figures in her first two races. Those figures were comparable to the 94 figure that Formula Rossa (9) won her maiden. Magnificat earned her second victory on November 16 with a 98 figure, the fastest tied (with Silent Law) of anyone in the field. She is trained by Richard Mandella, the Hall of Fame trainer who won the 2024 La Brea (Kopion). Mandella knows this filly has the goods, and she could win again to add to Mandella's record of wins this year.

Formula Rossa (9) won her first career win by four lengths, then won her second race by six lengths, posting figures of 94 and 104. She faced older horses at Rancho Bernardo on August 24 and finished behind Sweet Azteca, a more mature five-year-old mare with seven wins in nine races. Formula Rossa earned a 96 figure, and after three months at the end of her sophomore season, she continues to improve. With Mike Smith guiding her career win and taking over after her previous second-place finish, she could put in a top effort to win the La Brea.

Like Formula Rossa, Magnificat has run her last two races against three-year-olds and older horses. Especially in races like the La Brea and the Malibu Stakes (for males), where seven winners have combined to win 10 races over the past five years, this gives an edge to these two top contenders.

Five G (3) won the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks in March, so she fits well at this grade 1 race. However, she has been off for nine months. Her best effort was a 97-figure win, and she should be much faster than she was in the spring. But other horses have run between 93 and 98 more recently, and her starting odds are 3 to 1. I will use her in exactas, but not as a wager to win.

Artisma (4) won her debut in November 2024, then finished second by a head in the Sana Ynez Stakes in February at this distance. She has run four more races since, all seconds, and posted strong figures of 95, 96, and 97, with her last by a neck over Magnificat, for which she will use blinkers to help. Since I believe Magnificat is a contender, this filly is definitely one to watch, especially at 15 to 1.

Silent Law (11) has also been a bridesmaid, with three wins after winning her first and second wins. She is one of Baffert's three entries - Usha (5) and Brilliantly (6) - to get the trainer's third win in this stake after winning in 2022 (Fun to Dream) and 2023 (Kalypso). She has starting odds of 10/1 and is considered an interesting contender.

Bets:

Wins: Magnificat (10) should be at fair odds of 4 to 1 or higher.

Formula Rossa (9) should be at fair odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

I might also consider Artisma (4) and Silent Law (11) at 8 to 1 odds or higher.

#7 Savion	Still some upside here with just the two starts to his name, and he's probably capable of something a bit better this time around. Not impossible at what should be a midrange price.
#3 Juris Doctor	He rallied well in that solid local debut, and he hasn't done much wrong through four starts. Think he can be tough here today, potentially from a bit closer range.
#6 Montador	He was just a length off Grade III company last time out and has a little bit of positional pace that should give him the jump on a couple of the finishing threats. Obvious player -- wouldn't argue too hard with you if you leaned on the class from his last.
Race Summary	Savion has some room to come forward still with just the two starts under his belt, and he might get a slightly more tactical trip today while adding blinkers.

Fair Grounds - Race #9

#6 Unmerited Favor	She's coming out of a deep Grade III spot and has been pretty honest otherwise in her recent starts. Might get slightly overlooked in favor of some of those exiting the Mrs. Revere?
#7 Caviar Breakfast	She's one of a few coming out of that Mrs. Revere when chasing Lush Lips home, and there's nobody like that lined up in this spot today, and I like how she showed up that day at 60/1. Heading in the right direction?
#9 Bracelet	She comes out of the same common race as Caviar Breakfast, and she has the tactical pace to sit up close to the splits here after staying in the picture pretty well with Lush Lips last out.
Race Summary	Unmerited Favor and Caviar Breakfast have some appeal for the McPeek barn -- thinking one of the two will land this for that team.

Fair Grounds - Race #10

#2 Tortuga Coast	Forward player moved up while getting around two turns last time out, and something similar to that one might keep her in the frame today. Interesting at an OK price.
#5 Honor Society	She has some proving to do, but she stepped up nicely into special weight company at Remington in the last one and might be able to share with this crew while overlooked on the board.
#7 Aegis	Wouldn't be a surprise to see her move forward while getting around two turns, and she figures to find an OK tracking spot here on the move to a route trip.
Race Summary	Tortuga Coast handled a route trip nicely at Delaware last time out, and she should find a good run of things again today. #6 Majestical is probably a player, too, but the board will reflect that.

I've got to go with MODAROSA. Has run admirably when racing a turf route race. With better than average trips to the winner's circle, Alvarado ought to have this filly in excellent position to win the outing. The speed rating of 96 from her last affair looks solid in here. WORLD TRAVELER - Spatz has this mare moving well and is a strong choice based on the quite good Equibase Speed Figures garnered in route races lately. As of late Spatz has provided bettors with a respectable winning percentage with horses running in turf route races. LADY CHA CHA - With a strong 87 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. This horse has a terrific winning percentage in turf routes.

Has to be considered versus this field displaying solid figures recently and an average speed fig of 80 under similar conditions. Has a solid record at the distance and surface, which makes me give the nod to this colt. THE BOONDOCKER - He has posted decent numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well against this field. Entries trained by Brown in dirt sprint races are generally sound. NANTZ - Meeting a much easier field than last time out.
