Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Full-Card Sunday Selections

We had to wait a couple of extra days, but we have nearly made it to Opening Day of the Classic Meet at picturesque Santa Anita Park. The 11-race card at the Great Race Place kicks off at 2PM eastern and is headlined by six stakes races, including a trio of Grade 1 events. I cannot wait.

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Scott Shapiro’s full-card analysis isolates those horses that should be included in Daily Doubles, Pick- 3’s, Pick- 4’s, Pick- 5’s, and of course Pick- 6’s.

Grade Descriptions: A= Highest Degree of Confidence, B= Solid Play, C= Least Preferred or Pass, X= Likely Winner but at odds probably too short to wager on.


Race 1:

Grade: C+

Use: 4 Island Home; 8 Chair’s Coin; 1 Photogenic; 3 Springline


Forecast: I had a hard time making strong cases for backing the morning line favorites in the opener. #2 Improbable U should get a great trip under Irad Ortiz Jr. in her first local try, but has had her chances with favorable trips already and failed to cross the wire first. The same is true for #12 Ramayana who has finished second in three consecutive races to begin her career. I will use a few others that are less exposed, as well as #3 Springline, who could find herself on the lead with an inside draw and a rider change to Emisael Jaramillo. Hopefully, we can catch a decent price to kick things off.


Race 2:

Grade: C+

Use: 2 Liam Smith; 7 Captain Shreve


Forecast: I am going to do the unthinkable and take on the uncoupled Bob Baffert entry in this 2YO MSW event at 6.5-furlongs. #1 Winston Ave is the one I prefer of the two, but the rail draw and his lack of speed on debut make him tough to get too excited about at a likely short price. First-time starter #4 Newton cost nearly $1M at the FTS August 2024 sale, but I am not in love with the fact he has worked five times out of the gate prior to making his first start. #7 Captain Shreve sports fast works for a barn that does not win very often at first asking. I will use him a bit, but will focus primarily on #2 Liam Smith. The Midshipman colt is a half-brother to talented 3YO Jimmys Dailys and comes in off a bullet 5-furlong drill over this surface on December 18. He looks quick.

Race 3:

Grade: B

Use: 9 Miss Artois; 5 Toes; 6 Royal Charter; 11 Starts Now; 10 My Perfect Wave


Forecast: The pace is likely to be quick in this first-level allowance over the Santa Anita sod, so I will look for runners that can settle early and finish late. Several prices fit the profile, but the one I prefer most is #9 Miss Artois. The Mucho Macho Man filly comes in off a runner-up effort where she really came home late over the good going at Del Mar. With lots of rain in the area, the likelihood is the course will certainly have some give in it on Sunday. This and the race shape should benefit this Pam Ziebarth homebred in search of her second lifetime score.


Race 4:

Grade: C

Use: 2 Rizzleberry Rose; 3 Miss Practical; 10 Clubhouse Ride


Forecast: I lack a strong opinion in this state-bred first-level allowance over the main track, but gave the slight nod to #2 Rizzleberry Rose. The Governor Charlie filly showed grit and determination battling to the wire last out despite being put into a tight spot early. The worry is the amount of speed signed on to her outside, so I will use a couple of others, including lightly-raced #3 Miss Practical. If they go at it early, she could be rolling late off the bench.

Race 5: Mathis Mile (G2)

Grade: X

Use: 3 Namaron


Forecast: I am not creative in the first of 6 stakes races on the Opening Day slate. #3 Namaron has finished third against better competition in both starts since arriving from Germany. Last out, he made the lead at the top of the lane, but got a bit lost out there and was out finished by a pair of rivals, including the very talented Graham Motion runner, Test Score. The blinkers go on, which along with the decrease in competition should do the trick for the European invader.



Race 6: Laffit Pincay Jr. (G2)

Grade: X

Use: 1 Nysos *pictured*


Forecast: To no one’s surprise trainer Bob Baffert could be poised for a big Opening Day. His likeliest winner is #1 Nysos. The 4YO colt has rattled off three straight wins since his near miss in the Churchill Downs (G1) off the bench. He is 3 for 3 over this surface and should have no problem staying undefeated in Arcadia.


Race 7:

Grade: B

Use: 8 Mucho Del Oro; 1 Anmer Hall


Forecast: #1 Anmer Hall is the likeliest winner in the start of what should be a massive late Pick 5 pool. The Palace Malice gelding has won 3 of 9 over this course and 4 of 6 at the tricky 6.5-furlong distance. The concern is his lack of speed with an inside draw. Theoretically, this could present serious traffic issues for the 7-2-ML favorite, so I will also use #8 Mucho Del Oro. Like Anmer Hall, the 7YO gelding has shown an affinity for this course and configuration. If he has things easy on the front end, he is likely to make the field pay.


Race 8: La Brea (G1)

Grade: B-

Use: 11 Silent Law; 6 Brilliantly; 9 Formula Rossa


Forecast: The first of 3 Grade 1’s is for 3YO fillies at 7-furlongs over the main track where I like a pair of Baffert trainees the most. #6 Brilliantly has been training forwardly for her second start off the layoff. She is very likely to be on the lead and could be sitting on a career best run. #11 Silent Law has run some good races despite not having won since October ’24. I am hopeful they try new tactics with this Tiz the Law filly. Joel Rosario could be the right man to relax her in the early going and come with a strong late run down the middle of the track.




Race 9: San Gabriel (G3)

Grade: B-

Use: 9 Cabo Spirit; 6 Nesso’s Lastharrah; 11 Nineeleventurbo


Forecast: There is not a lot of early speed in this 9-furlong affair over the grass and the two runners likely to take the most public support have been camera shy of late. I will use three prices in hopes of separating in the late horizontals, including top choice #9 Cabo Spirit. He has run some big races when he has had things his way early. Hopefully that happens once again on Sunday.


Race 10: Malibu (G1)

Grade: B+

Use: 10 Goal Oriented


Forecast: Bob Baffert holds an extremely strong hand in the traditional Opening Day feature for 3YO males. I am hopeful #8 Cornucopian and #9 Barnes take the most action because I really like the chances of #10 Goal Oriented. The blinkers come off this son of Not This Time that has been keeping the best company in 2025. He kept his own against the likes of Journalism, Baeza, and Magnitude and should get a dream trip on the turn back from his far outside draw. He is my top play of the afternoon.


Race 11: American Oaks (G1)

Grade: C+

Use: 6 Take A Breath; 10 Atsila; 3 Cliffs


Forecast: This 10-furlong affair for 3YO fillies over the grass concludes the card. I like #6 Take A Breath most. The Mark Glatt trainee has not had things her way over the last couple of starts after a promising run off the plane in the Del Mar Oaks (G1). She gets Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time and hopefully a clean run at a big price. #10 Atsila and #3 Cliffs are the others I will use to close out what should be a great day in Southern California. Santa Anita Park - Race #6

#1 Nysos	Price won't be anything, but he is probably going to be tough again while racing over a course he loves against a softer group than he saw last time out when winning the Breeders' Cup Dirt Mile.
#7 Bartholdy	Honestly liked his last quite a bit, so I'm wondering if he's in the kind of form to step way up and land a small share behind some tougher customers. Think he'll get an OK run from the outside.
#3 Nevada Beach	Outside of that flat run in a deep renewal of the Breeders' Cup Classic, his form has been pretty sharp, and he seems like one of the logical alternatives if the top choice doesn't fire for some reason.
Race Summary	Nysos should be a handful here, and I'm hoping to get Bartholdy in the frame at an OK price to boost the short gimmicks.

Santa Anita Park - Race #10

#10 Goal Oriented	Turnback player has some appeal while getting back to a sprint for the first time since his sharp debut score, and he has been running into some of the toughest customers around in the division this year. Think he's in with a big chance here.
#9 Barnes	He has a high ceiling and would handle this group with his best stuff, but I think this is a fairly competitive group and don't totally trust him to bring his A+ game.
#1 Modus Bestia	Big class test for him here after a couple of solid scores, but I like the way he has been going lately and wonder if he can force the issue from the fence and stick around.
Race Summary	Goal Oriented looks interesting while turning back without blinkers, and his form may be a touch better than it looks based on some deep company lines.

Santa Anita Park - Race #11

#8 Totally Justified	She has brought only mild form for much of this year, but her company lines are a lot deeper than most of these, and I think that could help her stay in the frame late at an OK price.
#10 Atsila	She's not meeting the deepest crew for this level/race by any stretch, so she's not going to have to be the best Euro invader we've seen in years to land this one.
#3 Cliffs	Riser has been honest since getting over to the turf, and she might be just tactical enough to avoid getting outrun early at this kind of trip. One of the ones.
Race Summary	Totally Justified has some class to her in a race that doesn't feel all that deep for the level, so I'm hoping her form will wake up just a bit when it counts today.

1st race – (8) World Traveler won at this level two starts ago and had a wide trip last time. Gets the call here. (5) Zo Zucchera looks like the one to fear. (12) Mom’s Martini will be a big threat if she can avoid a wide trip. (6) Drum Roll can make some noise in this field. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 5-6-8-12.

3rd race – (2) Paradise Street was second in a solid debut and makes amends for that loss here. (8) Authentic Chance has the look of a dangerous firster from Pletcher. (7) Late Night Text deserves some attention in this field. (1) Swing Vote is another interesting firster. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-7-8.

5th race – (5) Tellnotales is the only one in the field not racing for a claiming tag. That could be telling. (2) Equitas could be a factor while facing claimers for the first time. (6) Just Silvia may welcome a return to turf. (8) Starship Elation could sneak into the picture at the end. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-6-8.

7th race – (8) Autobahn has the breeding and works to be a good one for Cox. (1) Prospector merits respect from the rail. (2) High Camp should not be ignored, (6) Mach Seven could be primed for a big debut. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-8.

9th race – (4) Velvet Vortex seems ready for a top effort in her first start since June. (1) She’s My Lady Luck seeks a third straight win and should be the main rival. (3) Rumors Have It will appreciate a return to the dirt course. (5) Necessity exits a strong win at Churchill Downs. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-5.

1^st race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (4) Morgana’s Moment (B) showed early speed in her November debut at 4-1 but kept bearing out while racing greenly. Blinkers on now. (5) Lady Delilah moved from turf to dirt, set the pace, and finished second clear of the rest. (1) On a Summer Day moves from turf to dirt after getting the lead and missing by a neck going long on the grass. (3) Bodegas finds an easier field than in her prior starts in maiden special weights.

3^rd race [Clm 20000, 1 mi] – (6) Shipsational (B) raced six-wide and closed well for second. (7) Lotsa Trouble comes back from a May layoff when he was racing in NY-bred allowances and drops to this claiming level where last seen he was a winner. (5) Market Maven won for $25,000 at Parx Racing last month for Jamie Ness who is going well at this Big A meeting. (2) Quiet Wisdom was claimed from his last three starts for $12,500 twice and $16,000 where he was a close third.

8^th race [NY, Bay Ridge, 1 mi] – (5) Bernietakescharge (A) survived a hot pace in the Empire Distaff that collapsed and still held on for second. (2) Landed ships up from Kentucky for Wesley Ward to try and win her fourth NY-bred stakes. Past rider Johnny V. makes a rare winter Aqueduct appearance to ride her. (3) Atlantis Queen has been racing at Delaware Park and Laurel Park and faces state-breds after an allowance win in November. (4) Soloshot moved from turf to dirt and was second in a NY Stallion Series stakes last month.

10^th race [Clm 17500 N2L, 7F] – (4) Itwillbefun (A) was taken up after an awkward start, was keen under restraint, rushed up to the lead as the favorite, faded, and got claimed. (9) Take Me to Londyn dropped down to the lowest tag of her career and was second with her best speed figure. (1) Cara’s Chianti was a front-end winner of a $20,000 maiden with a front-end effort. (6) That’sthefactjack has seven career finishes in second or third at this level.

Best bets: Morgana’s Moment (1^st); Bernietakescharge (8^th). Best value: Shipsational (3^rd); Itwillbefun (10^th).

GAME KEEPER - This gelding is the longer price of the 'split' entry from the barn of Jones. WALDRIP - Ness brings him right back. I suggest you stick with this live gelding. A little change in scenery has got to do this horse well. Reading the recent past performance lines, it seems like he likes to visit the winner's circle at different racing venues. He has the highest EPS (earnings per start). Take a good look at this horse. This gelding gets a weight break of -7 pounds from last race. Certainly could make the difference in this race. WHISKEYINTHEJARO - After the affair aboard this horse on Dec 6th, the jock is going to 'know' the gelding much better. MARTINI MARTIN - Utilizing this jockey/trainer combination is a good move. MONEY DROP - I think this gelding is very fit right now. I like the fact that Noel brings him back to a race so quickly. A pony coming back this quickly after a good race is a good omen. This gelding should be at the peak of fitness, this far into his form cycle. The most recent speed fig of 55 is the best last race speed rating in the field. The improved speed ratings over the last 3 races is great. Noel drops him in this race conditioned to win. I GOT THE HINT - This horse's last race was at Delta Downs in a race with an Equibase class figure of 71. Dropping drastically in class figure this time around puts him in a solid position in this field.
