Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Spot Plays | Wednesday, December 31, 2025

    by Scott Shapiro

The last card of the year in Southern California is scheduled to go to post at 3 pm ET / noon PT on New Year’s Eve at the Great Race Place. The 9-race slate is led by the featured Robert J. Frankel (G3) for the ladies at 1 1/8 miles over the Santa Anita lawn. Here are a few horses I like on the card in hopes it leads me into a great 2026.

Happy New Year to all of you! I appreciate your support this year. Let’s close things out with a bang!

    Race 1:
The opener is a state-bred MSW event for fillies and mares at one-mile over the grass. #2 Warm Reception exits a common race with a few of her rivals where she missed by just a head over this same surface and distance. The effort was a solid one since she almost got to the 4-5-favorite that was loose on the lead throughout. However, a deeper dive suggests this was just a subpar group since the odds-on victor came into the race having lost 8 times already, including four as the favorite and twice at below even money. I will opt for a fresh face in #1 Syntax. The Pavel filly put forth a solid second on debut sprinting over the main track and should move forward with the surface switch and stretch out in distance. She is a half-sister to Syntatic, a winner of 3 of 18 in grass routes. She seems worth a gamble against this bunch.

    Play: #1 Syntax (6-1 ML)

    Race 2:

The second half of the early Double is this first-level allowance at two-turns over the main track. The speedy #1 Del Mar Jerry was made the 2-1-ML favorite with a pair of Bob Baffert runners likely to take plenty of public support as well. They are capable, but I am not in love with their chances compared to their likely off odds, so I will take a big swing with #4 Runaway Charlie. The Ontario-bred has been given time since early May when he held off the odds-on favorite in an allowance event at Hawthorne. The competition gets tougher here without question, but he has been working steadily for his return to the racetrack. The son of Ghostzapper is now in the hands of veteran conditioner Vladimir Cerin and could get the right trip off a lively early pace under Joel Rosario. The price should be solid despite just a field of six.

Play: #4 Runaway Charlie (12-1 ML)

    Race 7: Robert J. Frankel (G3)

The featured event kicks off the $3 late Pick 3, is the second leg of the All-Turf Pick 3, and obviously is a part of all standard late sequences, so it is a pivotal race for horizontal players on New Years’ Eve to say the least. I will single second choice #6 Paradise Lake. The daughter of Uncle Mo was beaten on the square last time by 8-5-ML favorite #1 Public Assembly, but also got came from further off the pace. That very well could happen again, but I prefer the Peter Eurton trainee over the Santa Anita sod. This stands to reason since she has earned all 3 of her career wins over the course. Plus, she is likely to benefit from the cut back to 9-panels. I will live and die with the C R K Stable runner in this year’s Robert J. Frankel.

Play: #6 Paradise Lake (2-1 ML)

Jeremy Plonk: Parx Hit & Split Late Pick 4 Analysis | Wednesday, December 31, 2025

      by Jeremy Plonk

Our second of back-to-back 1 Million 1/ST Reward Points Hit & Split promotions for Parx takes place Wednesday on the New Year’s Eve card. The sequence starts with a trio of stakes races and field sizes of 11-8-12-15 before scratches. First post is 12:05 pm ET with the late pick 4 starting at 2:47 pm ET. Let’s get to work.

Parx: Race 7 | Kris Kringle Stakes

#2 Point Dume hasn’t lost at Parx in 3 starts and provides a tough opposition when able to get near the lead in any race. From an inside post, expect him to be sent for the front, but the pace could be contested. I trust him to gut any other frontrunners, leaving the other spots on the ticket for late closers. #3 Wild Vine can finish as can #4 Double Your Money on the cut-back in trip. #9 Golden Ice steps up in class but these connections are winning like it’s easy money, and he gets a good pace set-up.

Parx: Race 8 | Blitzen Stakes

#5 Buccherino has been almost impossible to tackle at Parx, going 7: 6-0-1 locally. He’s yet to try 7 furlongs, but he’s mostly added margin late in his local sprints and doesn’t show any sign of let-up. I don’t think you beat him from the front; a pace collapse would be the biggest risk to his chances. If so, late-running #2 Howgreatisnate really looks attractive over 7 furlongs.

Parx: Race 9 | Mrs. Claus Stakes

While morning line favorite #10 Foxy Junior has won 12 of 26 and makes a strong case here over a distance at which she’s been highly proficient, she’s failed to follow up winning efforts on several occasions. Her best efforts have been at Laurel and I’m going to try and beat her today. #2 Alani has had a fantastic 12: 6-4-0 season in 2025 and looks to be the only true sprint speed in the field. No excuse for these high-percentage connections not to just employ the same tactics that saw them win the Cornucopia wire-to-wire last out.

Parx: Race 10 | starter / optional claiming

The inside 3 runners here all figure to show early speed and there’s plenty more where that came from with #9 Normandy Hero never conceding the engine. With a 14-horse field in the main body and ton of speed in extreme circumstances, take as many closers as you can afford on the ticket and forecast for the frontrunners to come back to the spread horses. The #15 He’s In Charge offers major appeal if he draws into the cast.

      The Ticket

      2,3,4,9 with 5,7 with 2 with 15,5,6,7,11,12,13 = $28 for 50 cents

        BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

Santa Anita Park - Race #5
#7 Unrivaled Time He looked really good in his last two, and I the race shape on paper today gives him a real chance to trip out with a first-jump run from out here off a slow pace.
#2 Plutarch Not a ton to argue with here -- he has a few sharp stakes tries under his belt and graduated with authority when dropped in last time out, and he has shown a touch of tactical pace in the past that may benefit him in a race without a ton of speed.
#4 Stark Contrast He was a solid second in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf in October, and he is another who might find a good spot among the other tactical types sorting things out early.
Race Summary Unrivaled Time might offer an OK price thanks to the presence of the other listed pair, and I have loved the way he finished in his last two -- think he's legit.
Santa Anita Park - Race #7
#5 Watchtower I've admittedly been chasing her a bit throughout this year, but she's had some bad luck along the way and brings a few built-in excuses for dull form. Willing to give her a look again in a race with what feels like one standout.
#1 Public Assembly She ran a winning race last time out and just caught a better horse who had her measured the whole way. That one doesn't show up in this spot, so she's an obvious danger if she holds that form.
#4 As Catch Can She's a pretty honest finisher who fits well with this kind of crew, and she brings her traveling show back to a turf course she has handled in the past.
Race Summary Watchtower has some decent company lines, some dull running lines, and a few real excuses on her page this year -- let's see if she can close out the year with a score in a race that becomes wide open if the rail runner doesn't land it.
Santa Anita Park - Race #8
#2 Greys Over Bays She should be an OK price on debut, and I'm hoping she'll be able to show a little bit of a sustained run of some kind to get past some confirmed forward players late.
#5 Cherry Cider She turns back on the main track where she produced that sharp debut run before stopping late in that turf route last out. Obvious player with some pace.
#8 Kizazi There are some OK names on her page already, and her better stuff seems in the mix with this crew -- wonder if she might get a one-paced chasing trip in a race where that might work.
Race Summary Greys Over Bays goes first out in a race with a few horses who have shown a little pace, so I'm hoping she'll be able to stay a bit and get in the frame with these late.

          FRANK CARULLI'S DAILY PICKS

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #1
#8 DOILY (9-2) Pressed odds-on MSW fave and tired, steady work tab for first start locally.
#6 LA DAME DE HIERRO (15-1) Trainer was 4-8 in 2025 maiden claimers, three paid 8-1 or better.
#4 HOLY HERMOSA (2-1) Big wakeup call in first start for a claiming tag, class drops again.
Race Summary DOILY dueled through the turn with the 4-to-5 Maiden Special Weight winner at Prairie Meadows before tiring. She has kept busy in the mornings at Tampa for her first start since that September debut. Trainer Jon Arnett is 22-for-158 the last three years with similar layoff types. Bet to win and place and play a 2-4-6-8 exacta box.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #3
#2 KY THIRTY WON (6-1) Good stalking trip at a good price possible if turf form carries over.
#1 FIT TO FIRE (7-2) Bid 3-wide mid-turn, bumped with onrushing winner late, draws inside.
#3 MESSI THE GREAT (3-1) Plays catch-me-if-you can in longest sprint try this year.
Race Summary Don’t like the prices on speedball MESSI THE GREAT, class-plunging SEBASTIANTHE FIRST or class-rising FIT TO FIRE, so KY THIRTY WON gets the nod. He improved with an all-turf schedule since entering this barn in the second half of the year, fired a pair of bullets on the Tampa main track and appears well-suited to this distance. Bet to win and place and play 1-1 and 2-1 daily doubles.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4
#1 KANTHAROS JR (9-2) Slowed by pace in return, moves outside in for second start in this barn.
#12 FLY COMMANDER (2-1) Solid numbers, plenty of runner-up finishes, no luck with post draw again.
#5 CYBERBEAST (4-1) Good route speed, gets in light for top claim barn in first start as a gelding.
Race Summary KANTHAROS JR stalked the pace-controlling winner in the 4-path but settled for second in a race that timed 2/5 of a second faster than a higher-tagged maiden claimer on the same card. He draws the rail for his second start since June and can reach the winners’ circle with a duplicate effort. Bet to win and place and play a 1-5-12 exacta box.

Race 3 - Maiden Claiming - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $35000 Class Rating: 89

SA - R9 - FOR MAIDENS, THREE, FOUR, AND FIVE YEARS OLD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 122 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $50,000
                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES

                      # 9 BABE RUTHLESS 3/2
                      # 3 LORENZO BERNINI 2/1
MIDWAY LANE is the most favorable bet in this race. Garnered a strong speed rating in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this race. The average class rating alone makes this one a contender. The odds should be just right on this horse. BABE RUTHLESS - Should best this group of horses in this race here, showing strong figures of late. There is a formidable chance that this entry's late pace will improve with second time Lasix. LORENZO BERNINI - I would like this gelding on the rider and conditioner numbers alone. With a sound 87 average speed figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's race.

                        Aqueduct - Race #1 - Post: 12:40pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $80,000 Class Rating: 85

                        Rating:

                        #4 LEAVE ME (ML=8/1)
                        #7 WHERE'S YOUR BOOM (ML=8/5)

LEAVE ME - Looking at today's class rating, this pony is meeting an easier bunch than in the last race at Aqueduct. Last race at Aqueduct, he broke from the far outside. I don't need an advanced degree like The Brain to tell me his inside post position today should help. Trying to get to the winner's circle for the 1st time moving from a turf race to the main track. I think De Paz will have him fit for today's race. WHERE'S YOUR BOOM - State bred races are generally easier than 'open' company, and this gelding's move into the 'state bred' class today should make him tough in here. Gutierrez and Ortiz partnered up are a punter's friend. The addition of blinkers usually means that a trainer wants a pony to show more speed or to keep his attention focused.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 COMBAT MISSION (ML=5/2), #5 LE CADEAU (ML=4/1), #3 TWENTY ONE RED (ML=5/1),

COMBAT MISSION - When examining today's class rating, he will have to notch a better fig than in the last race to compete in this dirt route. LE CADEAU - When checking today's class figure, he will have to record a much better speed rating than last time out to compete in this dirt route. TWENTY ONE RED - This gelding notched a rating in his last event which likely isn't good enough in today's race.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - LEAVE ME - Handicappers may say this animal can't control the pace. While this may be true, he is the sole solid stalker in this field. Won't be too far back when it counts - At the finish.

                          # 2 GOODBYE TYME 12/1
                          # 4 SASSY ANGEL 3/1
                          # 1 THREE FINGER JACK 15/1
GOODBYE TYME looks to be a formidable contender and could score at a price in here. Must be given a shot as he drops to compete against this easier group. SASSY ANGEL - Has been travelling quite well and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. Will likely be one of the leaders of the bunch going into the midpoint of the contest. THREE FINGER JACK - Has a strong shot for this event if you like back class. Guillen has this gelding moving well and is a competitive choice based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figures put up in short races lately.

                            Parx Racing - Race #4 - Post: 1:26pm - Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 75

                            Rating:

                            #7 TRUE CONNECTION (ML=6/1)
                            #9 ROCKET NIGHT (ML=6/1)
                            #11 GUCCI VISION (ML=4/1)

TRUE CONNECTION - Rivera and Padilla-Preciado perform well when they team up. Hard to beat a win percentage of 33. Is ranked uppermost in earnings per start. A strong performance right here in this race can add to that bankroll. A repeat of that latest performance on Oct 22nd where he notched a speed rating of 68 looks high enough to win in this event. ROCKET NIGHT - This gelding is in fine form, having run a nice race on Dec 10th, finishing sixth. The jock and handler combination have a profitable return on investment when they team up. Finished sixth at Parx Racing last out. Was close at the end and at odds of 6/1 in this race, he looks like a possible contender. GUCCI VISION - After the affair aboard this horse on Dec 10th, the jockey is going to be in touch with the colt much better. First-time going 1 mile 70 yards. This trainer is a keen one when it comes to stretching out any horse. I'd give them a real good look.

                            Vulnerable Contenders: #4 TWIRLING EXPRESS (ML=9/2), #3 IRISH TENOR (ML=5/1), #10 REDOUBTABLERIPKEN (ML=6/1),

TWIRLING EXPRESS - Hard to wager on any horse to turn things around if there is no reward to taking the stab. IRISH TENOR - Speed kills. Plenty of zip in this race compromises this horse's dreams at winning. This runner ran a substandard speed figure last out. He shouldn't show signs of improvement and will likely get beat today running that fig. REDOUBTABLERIPKEN - Speed figures of 69/61/53 are headed in the wrong direction. Looked good on Dec 10th, finishing third, but no workouts since is a bit troublesome.

                              # 5 KISS CAM 9/2
MORNIN MERLE has a respectable shot to take this race. Has a strong shot for this race, if she can race to her back class. Achieved a 70 TrackMaster speed fig last out. A duplicate race here should get the trip to the winner's circle in this race. Can't overlook the connections here, a 23 winning percent, one of the best at getting into the winners circle. SWEET SAMSARA - The 4 post sports a better than expected win percentage at Dover Downs. Has competitive speed figs and more than likely has to be considered for a wager in here. KISS CAM - Not many folks know, but the 5 post here at Dover Downs has been amazing for a well above average win stat. Certainly should be given a look based on the very good TrackMaster SR achieved in the last contest.
