Race of the Week: Saturday's Mucho Macho Man at Gulfstream Park

The Lead:
The road to the Florida Derby kicks off Saturday at Gulfstream Park with the 1-turn mile Mucho Macho Man Stakes. It's the leadoff to the series, which includes 2-turn races in the Holy Bull and Fountain of Youth in-between. The Race 10 of 11 co-feature on the card shares the spotlight with the Ginger Brew Stakes. The Mucho Macho Man will be part of the Sunset 6 wager, matching the final 3 races on the card from both Gulfstream and sister track Santa Anita.

Field Depth:
Three of the 9 entrants are stakes-placed: ROGER THAT DANA, MAX CAPACITY and THUNDER CHUCK. All seek their first stakes victories. This race could be won on the class rise without much argument.

Pace:
Early speed can be expected from more than half of this lineup, including from inside-out CABOURG, EPIC SUMMER, ROGER THAT DANA, BLAME YASSELF, MAX CAPACITY and THUNDER CHUCK. A horse with a strong finishing ability could be set up nicely.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-COMMANDMENT: Trainer Brad Cox wintered in Florida with a string last year for the first time and it netted Florida Derby winner Tappan Street. He'll begin that path with this second-out maiden breaker from Churchill Downs. The $500,000 Into Mischief colt popped a big 96 BRIS Late Pace Figure when fourth in his Keeneland debut, but 7F last out when winning from midpack and a faster pace. Grandson of Florida Derby winner Orb looks like the horse to beat under Irad Ortiz Jr.

#2-CALBOURG: Jose D'Angelo trainee has made the lead in all 3 starts, winning his debut, but running out of steam a bit in last 2. This barn looks for back-to-back wins in the Mucho Macho Man after Guns Loaded scored a year ago. Held some decent company lines, chasing Oscar's Hope, who since won the Jean Lafitte Stakes at Delta for Tom Amoss. Junior Alvarado takes the mount for the first time.

#3-EPIC SUMMER: Aqueduct debut sprint winner on Oct. 26 in nearly wire-to-wire fashion. This George Weaver trainee will pair of Tyler Gaffalione for the first time. Note his debut pursuer, Schoolyardsuperman, since returned to break his maiden for Chad Brown. Gap in workout tab between Nov. 21 and Dec. 19 means he could be a bit short on fitness.

#4-MR. HOOLIGAN: 3-race maiden is devoid of early speed after unsuccessful ventures at Presque Isle, Keeneland and Tampa Bay Downs. Hard to think the venue change to Gulfstream makes a big difference, but a pace collapse could see him passing some tired ones for Kevin Rice.

#5-ROGER THAT DANA: Debut sprint winner stretched out to 2 turns in the Florida Sire Stakes In Reality and gave way in the lane to finish third in that stakes unveiling. FSS rival Strategic Risk returns Saturday in Oaklawn's Smarty Jones Stakes. Trainer Luis Ramirez will have a third different rider in 3 starts on one expected to be part of the early pace.

#6-TRIPP'S PROMISE: Dale Romans trainee should be the one to fear late off rallying placings in 1-turn mile allowances at Churchill Downs. His 92 BRIS Late Pace Figure over a mile should translate very well here under Corey Lanerie, who likes to save ground when possible. Romans trained the grandsire Shackleford and sire Promises Fulfilled to much success at Gulfstream and beyond.

#7-BLAME YASSELF: Cross-entered in a Friday allowance at Gulfstream, but John Velazquez named to ride in the Mucho Macho Man gives you the sense he'll end up here. Victor Barboza Jr. trains the son of Blame, who outran his route genes to win sprinting Nov. 15 in his debut -- wire-to-wire no less. Projects to improve with distance and could be a factor throughout among the pace players.

#8-MAX CAPACITY: Mid-Atlantic, well-seasoned Maxfield colt exits a runner-up finish in the Inaugural Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs, a race won easily by 1-9 favorite and 2-2 unbeaten Solitude Dude for Saffie Joseph Jr. This Ricard Silaman trainee has been inconsistent, but has probably faced the best competition in the field, including Balboa, who since ran third in the Remsen and goes in Saturday's Jerome at Aqueduct. Tough read, but not incapable.

#9-THUNDER CHUCK: Monmouth maiden breaker for Jorge Delgado was no match for Ewing et al in the Saratoga Special before getting some time off. Return second in the Juvenile Sprint at Gulfstream in late November was a positive sign behind 4-5 favorite Hammond. Don't think he's fast enough to make the lead and not sure he really wants to pass horses.

Most Likely Exotics Contender:
TRIPP'S PROMISE gets the right pace set-up and is proven in 1-turn miles with a pedigree to like the track.

Best Longshot Contender:
No huge bombs projected, but BLAME YASSEL may get overlooked to a small degree.

Jeremy Plonk: Oaklawn's Smarty Jones Day Hit & Split Late Pick 4 | Saturday, January 3, 2026

Saturday’s late pick 4 at Oaklawn Park includes the featured Smarty Jones Stakes and our 1 Million 1/ST Reward Points Hit & Split promotion. The sequence starts in Race 8 at 4:25 pm ET. Let’s get to work.

Oaklawn: Race 8 | allowance

While there are several viable options in this race, a solid amount of pace gives the late-runners the preferred running style in my projection. #6 Super Cruise makes a second start of his form cycle, the one that created his maiden-breaking win in April over this track. His last was against First Division, who comes back in stakes company Friday at OP with a big shot (tab the result for more/less confidence). #5 Myra’s Boy gets a new pilot after a mist-timed move, one of my favorite jockey angles, and could surprise at a big number – at a minimum a good exotics use. I’ll limit with these 2, otherwise could make cases for too many others (#3, #8, #7, #11 of most additional interest).

Oaklawn: Race 9 | $135,000 Commodore Stakes

#2 Second ID comes out of a super-tough edition of the Ring the Bell Stakes that could double up as the meet’s top sprint, the Count Fleet, in the spring. He was solid that day and this easier task puts him at the head of my list. #6 Bourbon Bash offers double-digit odds and a bullet workout Dec. 11 from the gate is highly impressive for a Steve Asmussen barn whose horses rarely work fast. Long layoff concerns, but price will be right to find out. Favorite #5 Concrete Glory loves to win races, 17 of them, and while never at Oaklawn, this Saffie Joseph Jr. trainee is by 2012 Arkansas Derby dominator Bodemeister.

Oaklawn: Race 10 | $250,000 Smarty Jones Stakes

#3 Boca Beach Club really caught my eye in his professional Hawthorne debut win and I was all in for his Advent Stakes sprint appearance Dec. 12 over this track. He missed the break, spent the race in make-up mode and ran on well and galloped out well enough. He’s by Arkansas Derby winner Omaha Beach, out of a Mineshaft mare, and should only get better routing. Our late, great handicapping brother Jeff Siegel used to preach the virtues of the sprint-sprint-route form cycle, and that’s where Boca Beach Club reside. Go time with a jockey change to money rider Luis Saez. #1 Universe is a classy sort who has chased with interest 3 straight stakes winners that are high only many Derby prospect lists (Napoleon Solo, Incredibolt and Further Ado). He should come running with a rail-saving trip. #5 Rancho Santa Fe deserves respect for his 2 wins in Kentucky, the last coming at Keeneland against a couple of next-out allowance winners who ran 2-3 for Brendan Walsh and Will Walden. I’ll settle on this favored trio with some confidence, but the play may be the best ML price in Boca Beach Club.

Oaklawn: Race 11 | allowance

#6 Vital Mind is a regally bred Into Mischief-She’s A Julie colt who hasn’t done much wrong in 2 career starts, though he’s obviously had plenty of physical issues given the light duty. Should be in the hunt throughout with legitimate upside. #1 Five O’Clock Somewhere is rail speed in sharp form and capable of the class rise. #4 Run Jalen Run also projects near the front and one of these 3 pace players likely holds off the modest closers.

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Late Pick 4 Analysis | Saturday, January 3, 2026

Northfield Park has a 15-race card with the $1.00 Late Pick 4 starting in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool with a 14% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

1-Think Fast (8/5)-Has 3 straight 2nd place finishes, the first 2 came at Dayton and has been camera shy. Shipped in and was a bridesmaid again. Stayed inside and will look for a more aggressive try in the 2nd start on this oval. Aaron Merriman sticks and should be no worse than in the pocket around the opening turn.
7-Tr'sshining Star (3-1)-Beat this kind last week by drawing off by over 17 lengths and went off at 1/2. That was the 2nd start in town, meets mostly a different group, and this won't be as easy. But could follow the same script and double up at a better price.

Race 12 (10:02 PM EST)

5-Crytel Shadow (2-1)-Beat the FM30000NW7 in 3 of 4, then stepped up to face FM-Open company and went off at 18-1 and raced like it. Now, faces a scattered bunch but not loving the short morning line. Should be a player if lands on the point without burning much gas. Dan Noble gets the most out of the mare, and she will be a small price.
7-Sale El Sol (6-1)-Yonkers shipper found Open company difficult in the last 4 races, and now Merriman gets the call for the 1st time since 11-30. Should offer a fair price and this race could shape up for a closer, so best to respect.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EST)

3-Ginger Tree Rose (9/5)-This mare has raced well in 2 of 3 starts for the Kahrig barn. Merriman steers for the 4th straight and will look to make every call a winning one. Short price chalk is a logical play.
6-Princessbythesea (6-1)-This is an on and off sort who comes off a nice effort. Finished 2nd in last, was off over 3 weeks and was coming off a sick scratch. Noble sticks and has won 4 of 14 at Nfld, the morning line price seems wishful but could offer some value.

Race 14 (10:46 PM EST)

3-Sweetens Cove (7/2)-Went gate to wire from post 7 last time. This will be a bigger test but could get the top without much of a problem. Probably needs to be on the lead turning for the wire to win, and Tyler Angus could work that trip.
6-Juliet Duz (12-1)-The Meadows shipper should offer a nice return and comes off a win at 1/5. Faces a tougher crowd. This is the 2nd start off the bench and could have more to give.
9-Big Bad Beachbunny (5/2)-Wired the field in last leaving from post 1. Enjoys racing on the lead or close to it. It will be up to Chris Lems to get a good early seat. It won't be easy but wouldn't want to leave her off the ticket against this field.

Scott Shapiro: Triple Crown Prep Picks | Saturday, January 3, 2026

Newly turned 3YOs take center stage later this afternoon when the Road to the Kentucky Derby hits its first stops of 2026. A pair of 10-points to the winner races headline the afternoon along with a strong edition of the Macho Macho Man, which gets the Road to the Florida Derby started in Hallandale Beach. Not only do I love watching these horses progress throughout their early races, but often times these preps can lead to great betting opportunities. Hopefully, we can find a few good ones over the course of the next few months. Here is who I like this afternoon in New York, Florida, and Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Jerome Stakes at Aqueduct: (1:10 PM eastern)

The first of the Derby preps goes as Race 3 on Aqueduct’s 9-race card that gets started at 12:10 PM local time. With #5 Mailata likely to scratch after winning by a pole at Parx on December 30, we are probably down to a field of 4 where #3 My World looks like a standout. The well-bred son of Essential Quality is out of an Into Mischief mare, who earned well over $300k over the grass throughout her 36-race career. This could play well over the Churchill Downs main track in May, but on the track the colt has been good, but not great thus far. He had a forgivable debut where he was buried down on the rail against a solid group of 2YOs at Saratoga before a pair of workmanlike wins over this surface. I expect the Brad Cox trainee to be very tough to beat this afternoon, but a potential play against moving forward. Time will tell.

Pick: #3 My World (7-5 ML)

Mucho Macho Man at Gulfstream (4:48 PM eastern)

No Derby points will be on the line, but that does not mean this year’s Macho Macho Man over the one-turn mile configuration at Gulfstream lacks Road to the Derby appeal. There actually appears to be multiple runners entered that have their eyes set on Louisville early in the year, including a pair of runners shipping in from the Blue Grass State. With plenty of early zip signed on, the race shape should benefit both 7-5-ML favorite #1 Commandment and #6 Tripp’s Promise. Both runners last raced over the Churchill Downs main track in competitive fields and have already exemplified the ability to settle early and finish with energy.
I like Commandment most, but he will be too short of a price to bet on the Win end, so I will tie the two up in a cold exacta with the chalk on top. The son of Into Mischief got a great learning experience first out against a live group of 2YOs at Keeneland before progressing nicely in his maiden victory in Louisville on November 1. He has been down in Florida since. Tripp’s Promise has yet to cross the wire first since his maiden victory in late September, but has made a strong account of himself against quality competition. Look for jockey Corey Lanerie to angle over, save ground early, and come with a strong run late. I expect it to be good enough to pass most, if not all of the field, for potential future Senator Dale Romans.

Play: Exacta 1-6

Smarty Jones at Oaklawn (5:25 eastern)

The last of the 3 early 3YO races goes as Race 10 on Oaklawn Park’s 11-race slate that starts at 1PM eastern and contains a few intriguing prospects. 5-2-ML favorite #5 Rancho Santa Fe has rattled off two wins to kick off his career and has the look of a colt that can run all day, while 3-1-second choice #1 Universe has kept the best company and draws favorably along the inside. Both have strong chances to earn 10 points on the Derby leaderboard this afternoon, as well as #3 Boca Beach Club stretching out to two turns off two sprints for Jimmy DiVito, but I prefer the “other” McPeek.

#9 Sleepingonfreedom sold for just $60k at the Keeneland September 2024 sale, so he made his first couple of starts against restricted maiden special weight company. He ran well in both sprints, including his first victory, which came at the 6.5-furlong distance on October 11. From there, he was eligible for a starter allowance and was able to win going away over an off track despite a ton of traffic issues before he found clear sailing. The Independence Hall colt has progressed nicely, finished strong in his first attempt at a route of ground, and retains the services of McPeek’s main man Brian Hernandez Jr. The fact Hernandez opts for this colt over Universe potentially tells us quite a bit. He should move forward this afternoon in his toughest task to date.

(7) Mo Ladies chased fast fractions in his debut and should benefit from that start. (6) Weseeulator figures to be in the hunt here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-6-7.

3rd race – (8) Compass Rises won at this level last time and looks best here. (6) One of One has some speed and could be tough to catch in this field. (1) She Takes Cash will be helped by a ground-saving trip. (2) Sunroof should get some attention in this field. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-6-8.

6th race – (6) Sister Troienne won her last three starts and looks best here. (3) R Slew of Cash was third behind the top pick last time and should be a key factor again. (4) Spirit Doll was an easy winner of her turf debut. (1) Storm’s Wake may perk up from the rail. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-6.

8th race – (5) George Briggs is a talented New York-bred who can handle this field. (10) Smooth Breeze can be a main threat if he avoids a wide trip. (9) Our Souper Hero seeks a third straight win and cannot be overlooked. (1) Sigan Viendo can make his presence felt here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-5-9-10.

10th race – (1) Commandment was a powerful maiden winner and will be a handful from the rail. (3) Epic Summer won his debut and should be a main threat. (7) Blame Yasself has sharp speed and may hang around to the end. (8) Max Capacity fits in well here. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-7-8.

1^st race [NY, Md 40000, 1 mi] – (4) Island Charm moved from turf to dirt for her third start and set the pace for a $50,000 tag and finished second. (6) Rose Lisa also went from turf to dirt for the first time, dropped down in class, and finished second as an even money favorite. Flavien Prat stays on board. (7) Luciana’s Honor was third in that same race as Rose Lisa while racing close to the pace. (5) Hudson River Line tried the main track in her second start and showed some early speed.

2^nd race [Clm 20000B, 6F] – (1) Gunner Bay towers over this field in speed figures from his last two races where he was running for $50,000. Linda Rice claimed him in Kentucky for $62,500 in October. (3) Funny Uncle rallied wide last month to finish second in a N3L condition for a $17,500 tag. (6) Leading Role won at the N2L level three weeks ago with a front-end effort. (5) Panagiotis was third behind Funny Uncle last time out.

3^rd race [Jerome, 1 mi] – (3) My World won his last two at Aqueduct in a maiden special weight and then moved to the mile distance while winning the Nashua by more than three lengths. (1) Enforced Agenda was a debut winner at the Big A in November going a mile for George Weaver at surprisingly high odds of 23-1. (4) Balboa has Derby trail experience in the Remsen (G2) where he had the lead and faded to third and the American Pharoah (G1) while racing fifth for Bob Baffert. He won the JF Lewis at Laurel Park for current trainer Brittany Russell. (2) Freedom’s Echo will be the longshot in the four-horse field shipping up from Parx racing as a maiden claiming winner.

7^th race [Busanda, 1 mi] – (3) Shilling won the Tempted going the one-turn mile at Aqueduct in November. She then set the pace in the Demoiselle (G2) but was beaten by Zany who dominated that field. (5) Dazzling Dame won her first two starts including the Sorority at Monmouth Park. She is the October winner of a stakes at Delaware Park. (6) Believable was an $800,000 Saratoga yearling purchase who won her debut for Todd Pletcher and Repole Stable before running second in the Tempted. Last seen she was fifth in the Demoiselle. (2) Britain was a $1.05 million purchase as a 2-year-old who won her second start for Chad Brown as an odds-on favorite.

Best bets: Island Charm (1^st); Gunner Bay (2^nd). Best Value: My World (3^rd); Shilling (7^th).
