Al Cimaglia: Miami Valley Late Pick 4 Analysis

    January 14, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Miami Valley has 14-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (7:20 PM EDT)

2-S I P (2-1)-This 7-year-old made its MVR debut last week and tried to wire the field from the 7-hole and fell a length short. Moves inside, comes right back, and can be even better with a start on the oval. Does bump up and should fit but could be over bet.
5-Caviar Gold (5/2)-Broke last week at the start and lost all chance. That race came against better and now drops to a winnable spot. Goes back to racing with hopples and this 8-time winner at MVR could add to that total.
6-Angel Nation (4-1)-The veteran had a big 2025 banking over $181,000 and put in a good try last week after missing a start. Stayed inside and was used a couple of times to finish a close 4th. Has the gate speed to land in a close-up seat and this could be go-time once the wings fold.

    Race 12 (7:40 PM EDT)

2-Jewell Said (7/2)-Raced evenly last time in a needed race and now gets a ++ driver change with Chris Page steering instead of conditioner Ed Konrad. Will look for an aggressive drive and to be in the hunt at the wire.
4-Sadhaka N (4-1)-Will take a swing with this New Zealand bred making its US debut. Went a 1.54 mile in a qualifier on 12-27 and finished with a 27.2 last panel. That was the 2nd qualifier and would have liked to have seen one more recently. With 8 starters racing coming off a layoff the Heather France barn posts 38% winners.

    Race 13 (8:00 PM EDT)

2-Mehelpingyou (7-1)-Raced better than the line looked in last, gets a new pilot in Tyler Smith, and will look for a determined effort. Could be in a spot to get a suck-around trip and might be overlooked.
3-Niko Man (5/2)-This isn't an easy race to read and recent form has been dull on the Ken Rucker trainee. But has been facing better and doesn't have an excuse for not waking up in this spot.

    Race 14 (8:20 PM EDT)

3-Absolut Peach (9/2)-Doesn't win often and has excuses in the last 3 races at DTN with outside post draws. Needs a top of the stack trip, to stay near the lead. That trip is possible and my take is the morning line could be too low.
5-Seaside Flirt (2-1)-Drew the choice starting slot in a race without much depth. Isn't automatic, will most likely not offer any value but needs to be included.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    2,5,6/2,4/2,3/3,5
    Total Bet=$24

Scott Shapiro: Wednesday Tampa/Turfway Promo Picks

      January 13, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

Sometimes during the winter, the middle of the week can seem so far away from your weekend plans. 1/ST BET and Xpressbet are hoping to help with a new promotion starting tomorrow over the next three Wednesdays. It is simple too. Just bet $50+ on both the Tampa Bay Downs and Turfway Park Wednesday cards and earn yourself a $10 bonus. Just be sure to remember to register on the promotional landing page. Here are a few horses I plan to build my wagers around tomorrow at Tampa and Turfway.

      Tampa Bay Downs, Race 3:

The pace should be extremely honest at the very least in this optional claimer for 3YOs at 1 1/16-miles over the Tampa lawn. The lone proven closer at two-turns on the grass is #3 Vino Solo. The New York-bred shocked a field of 9 over this course back on December 26 when he came from last-to-first to blow up the tote board at 60-1. The most impressive thing about that first out victory was the fact that it was not as if the race totally fell apart. Instead, it was this Solomini gelding running down a horse loose on the lead to bust open all horizontal sequences. He will not be that big of a price this time out, but still could get overlooked given the low- profile connections. I hope he shows the same turn of foot he did at first asking.

Play: #3 Vino Solo (9-2 ML)

      Turfway Park, Race 6:

This high-level allowance event at 6.5-furlongs drew a strong, full field of 12 led by 5-2-ML favorite #11 Arrest Me Red. The 6YO gelding has never finished worse than second in three starts over Turfway’s all-weather and merits serious respect, as does 3-1-second choice #5 Run Carson, but I will look for a bit more value with #3 Mischievous Rogue. The veteran son of Into Mischief has been camera shy of late, so I will need at least his 6-1-ML price, but he is the runner I think benefits the most from the stretch out to 6.5-panels. He is 2 for 4 in his career at the tricky distance and never been worse than third. He comes in off a solid third-place run against similar when he missed by just a half-length at odds of 17-1 and appears to be rounding back into from. Hopefully, he rediscovers the will to win.

Play: #3 Mischievous Rogue (6-1 ML)

      Turfway Park, Race 7:

My other play in Florence comes in this second-level allowance event for fillies and mares at one-mile where I like #1 Love Her Lots. Trainer Mike Maker lost this 7YO mare for $32k at Churchill Downs in November, but wasted no time dipping back into claim her for $40k at the first opportunity. I always love to see a barn willing to pay more than they lost a horse for immediately since it suggests an affinity of some sort for the animal. Maker comes into the new racing week on fire at Turfway clicking with 7 of 22 over the last 20 days for an ROI of $3.54. The inside draw should help the daughter of Cupid that makes her second start over this course after trying 1 1/4-miles to end her 2025 campaign. Walter Rodriguez is riding well and picks up the mount.

Play: #1 Love Her Lots (4-1 ML)

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Mahoning Valley - Race #3
#3 Tiz China Feels like the company lines stack up nicely here while making the local debut, and she should be in a great spot tracking the pace from the start. Dangerous.
#6 Tiz Mia She has some tables to turn out of a dull effort last time around, but I expected a bit better that day and wonder if she can reverse course a bit in this one at an OK price.
#2 Dos Amores She makes her local debut off the Churchill claim, and she seems like an OK fit with this local crew. Not totally sold -- and I think she's probably a touch overbet compared to her realistic chances of landing this.
Race Summary Tiz China isn't going to be much of a price, but I think she will be tough here. Hoping to get Tiz Mia in the picture at a price.
        Mahoning Valley - Race #5
#1 Betsy Bit worried the price will get short, and I wouldn't want to go to the well at 40 cents on the dollar again, but I think she's in for a dreamy trip sitting just behind the two pace players listed below. Should be able to watch it unfold and engage when her rider asks. Might drill these.
#6 Motown Story She has come up empty late in both starts so far, but I still feel like there might be a bit more here, and her pace will keep her in the frame from the start again.
#2 Shez Twisted She's got dangerous pace and tends to stick around OK even once she's headed, but I worry that Motown Story is going to be a thorn in her side the whole way and soften her up.
Race Summary Betsy should trip out from the inside here while always close to Motown Story and Shez Twisted, and I think you can lean on her in the multi-race plays. Not sure the price is going to be at all appealing, so maybe the aim is getting Motown Story to win the pace battle and stay better at a price in the gimmicks.
        Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#3 Khali J Think she's proven good enough to play with a crew like this after a couple of nice allowance efforts following the debut score at the $5,000 level. Perfect first-over trip?
#4 Arrogarsi She has aired in her last two starts, including an allowance win here last month, and she should find another good spying spot against this group. Capable. Overbet?
#1 Mia's Go She's another logical player in a fun race, and her form is darkened by some flat runs with better groups than she's going to find today. She has been untouchable in two starts in Ohio, but I'm otherwise kind of unenthused about her.
Race Summary Khali J won't need a whole lot better than she showed last out to land this one, and the recent work hints she might be sitting on just that kind of move forward today from close range. Kind of curious how this one gets bet, so watch the tote board, because I think that can drive some final decisions.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Parx - Race #1
#1 HYPER INFLATION (9-2) Lightly-raced 5yo is a good fit in this spot if ready after 10 months away.
#6 HOPPY TIME (6-1) In top form, sustained wide rally in final quarter to finish second in the slop.
#9 BIAGIO (4-1) Made stretch move, finished a length behind ‘Hoppy’ in longer sprint.
Race Summary HYPER INFLATION hasn’t raced since he won last March, but he ran okay off shorter layoffs than today and averaged a 53 Beyer in her last eight main-track sprints. He should sit an ideal stalking trip from the rail, so give him the nod for a win and place bet and play a $1 Pick 3 with numbers 1, 6, 9/2/2,7.
          Parx - Race #2
#2 CHARTAGE (8-1) Gets makeover for first route attempt, live longshot in second start for barn.
#3 BERMUDA TRIANGLE (3-1) Second as the odds-on favorite in pair of December routes.
#1 IT’S AUTHENTIC (2-1) Hit board in last four going long, the last two from the rail for higher tags.
Race Summary CHARTAGE, unhurried on the backstretch, gained mildly under urging on the turn and flattened out at 6-1/2F for his new connections. He gets Lasix and blinkers and could be suited for his first long-distance test. His dam, Courtage, was 8-43 with a $284k bankroll and several allowance wins going a route of ground at Parx. Bet to win and place and play a 2/1, 3/ALL trifecta.
          Parx - Race #3
#2 GOLDCREST (2-1) Finished on wrong side of photos in last two routes, needs well-timed bid.
#7 SPRING MAGIC (3-1) First or second in 5 of 12 at distance, takes some catching on class drop.
#3 HI HEELED WARRIOR (4-1) Rallied for third as the beaten favorite under these conditions.
Race Summary GOLDCREST rode the rail on a sloppy track, forged a brief lead near the far turn and went down fighting as she and the winning favorite separated from the field. She returns to her level of claim where, three starts ago, she appeared long gone approaching the sixteenth pole, only to get caught by the favorite. Bet to win and place and play 2-3 and 2-7 exactas.

                  # 9 EXCELLENT TIMING 2/1
RESTLESS looks to be a respectable contender. Should best this field here, showing very good numbers of late. Has been running quite well in races of this distance, going 8 - 27 under similar conditions. Is a strong contender based on figs recorded recently under today's conditions. HEY BOOTS - He has been racing admirably recently while recording very strong speed figures. Farrior has one of the best winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. EXCELLENT TIMING - Will almost certainly compete admirably in the early speed clash which bodes well with this group. In the upper half of earnings per start at the distance/surface in this field.

                    Rating:

                    #6 WARRIOR'S MISS (ML=2/1)

WARRIOR'S MISS - Rodriguez's agent must enjoy anytime Kulp gives them a mount; win percentage together is terrific. That 59 fig this mare earned in her last event tells me she's a major player in today's event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 SWEET MISCHIEF (ML=7/2), #4 TAKE TIME TO DREAM (ML=9/2), #8 JEZEBEL JADE (ML=5/1),

SWEET MISCHIEF - No good results for this less than sharp equine in a sprint affair over the last two months tells me that this mare is in a thorny spot TAKE TIME TO DREAM - Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any kind of closing response on January 6th. JEZEBEL JADE - This mare hasn't had any positive outcomes in short distance races in the last two months.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #6 WARRIOR'S MISS is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                      Rating:

                      #2 SHEZ TWISTED (ML=3/1)
                      #6 MOTOWN STORY (ML=9/2)

SHEZ TWISTED - I like this filly a lot here. She shows a lot of consistency, finishing in the money frequently. This horse should go right out to the early lead and may never look back. Could wire the field. Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here. MOTOWN STORY - Generally speaking, horses on Lasix for the first time should be considered. That's what we have here.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 BETSY (ML=5/2), #7 ACADEMIC FREEDOM (ML=6/1), #5 SCARY JERRY (ML=8/1),

BETSY - Finished second in her most recent effort with a most unsatisfactory fig. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch. ACADEMIC FREEDOM - I'd like to see more preferred recent efforts with oddsmaker's morning line of 6/1. SCARY JERRY - In the last affair this horse finished fifth. Doesn't look promising for her chances today.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - SHEZ TWISTED - Playing the top earnings per start racer is an angle which won't steer you wrong in the long run. I'm betting on this one.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #2 SHEZ TWISTED on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds

                        # 1 HIDDEN BEAUTY 10/1
WESTERN FEEL is tough to overlook as the wager in here. Ran a strong last race. Has a sharp shot in here if you like back class. She has put up competitive figs under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this field. JANA SUE - Boasts solid Speed Figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this field. Look for a very good pace improvement from this horse who enters on Lasix today. HIDDEN BEAUTY - Appears to be the type to be helped on Lasix here. Have to look at solely on class, with some of the top class numbers of this field.
