Jeremy Plonk: Fair Grounds Bet $100, Get $10 Picks for Thurs

      January 14, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

The Frosty Funds promotion continues Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January. Take advantage of the Bet $100, Get $10 promotion this week on Thursday’s card from Fair Grounds when you bet with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet. Here are a couple of key plays utilizing stats from the Betmix database.

      Fair Grounds: Race 4

#5 Good Conduct (4-1 morning line odds) has been away a year, but obviously fits over this class, distance and course based on prior form. Trainer Cherie DeVaux has won with 4 of her last 7 starters at the Fair Grounds meeting ($6, $8, $9, $11) – including off a 292-day layoff on Jan. 8 to ease some of the concern with this one’s vacation. She’s 5: 3-1-0 with Jose Ortiz during that run. Win bet #5. Exacta box 5-4 with DeVaux stablemate Time Stone.

      Fair Grounds: Race 7

#3 Gaza Heroico (12-1 morning line odds) was one-paced in his US debut at Horseshoe Indianapolis after winning 3 of 5 in his native Chile. Trainer Brad Cox has won with 5 straight starters at Fair Grounds coming into this racing week, all off 65 days or more, including a Horseshoe Indy shipper with Jareth Loveberry in the saddle. Cox is 5: 2-0-2 at the meet with Horseshoe Indy transfers. Worth a shot until the barn goes from this rolling boil to a simmer. Win bet #3.

Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Spot Plays | Thurs 1/15

        January 14, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

A new racing week at The Great Race Place gets started Thursday afternoon with a 9-race slate that gets rolling at 3:30 pm ET / 12:30 pm PT. The card is headlined by a pair of state-bred first-level allowance events at one-turn over the Santa Anita sod. Here are a trio of horses I have interest in wagering on to get the third week of the Classic Meet started.

        Race 3:

My first play of the week comes in the first of the two aforementioned 6-furlong affairs for Cal-breds over the grass. #1 Jetovator was understandably made the significant 9-5-ML favorite after nailing #3 Grazed at the wire in a 5-furlong dash at Del Mar in late November. The 10YO gelding has won 6 of his 7 career races over this course and should find a prominent spot early along the inside under jockey Mirco DeMuro. Hopefully, Grazed, #5 Jaguar Jon and even #7 Bro Bro off the layoff make things difficult towards the front end and set things up for #6 Gold Council. The son of Passion for Gold returns from a 19-month break in early October for new trainer Antonio Garcia and put in a strong late run at odds of 46-1 to miss by a neck. His start at Del Mar in November was not nearly as good, but he was caught wide and off the pace on a day where the rails were out and the inside was the place to be. The 6YO gelding has done his best work in Arcadia and should be a nice price with Diego Herrera returning to ride.

Play: #6 Gold Council (8-1 ML)

        Race 5:

The fifth race is the biggest race of the day for most horizontal players since it concludes the early Pick 4 & Pick 5, kicks off the late Pick 5, and makes up the first leg of the Thursday $3 All-Turf Pick 3. Most horseplayers will understandably use 5-2-ML favorite #6 Columnist after a pair of third-place efforts at this same distance dating back to late August for trainer Tim Yakteen. Yakteen is off to a good start to the meet and takes the blinkers off this son of Dads Caps for the first time. However, I prefer #1 Dark Blue. The Amerman Racing colt goes two sprints to a route in his first start in 2026 for trainer Michael McCarthy. The son of Maxfield broke just okay and put forth an even fifth on debut in late September and then showed improved speed from the gate, but was up against it from a race shape perspective nonetheless when we saw him last. McCarthy stretches Dark Blue out to a route of ground and adds the shades both for the first time, which along with his rail draw should allow jockey Umberto Rispoli to find a comfortable spot relatively close to the early proceedings. I am expecting a career best run from this guy in career start number 3.

Play: #1 Dark Blue (7-2 ML)

        Race 9:

Trainer Mark Glatt came into the meet on a bit of a slow streak and it took a couple of days to start winning races in Arcadia, but he certainly has figured things out of late. The veteran Southern California conditioner has won with 7 of 20 over the last 15 days for an ROI of $3.39. Glatt sends out #4 Big Bill for his first start since early October in this state-bred MSW event at one-mile over the grass.. The English Channel gelding burnt a good deal of the public’s money as a 3YO, but based on the morning line is likely to be second choice in this spot with a pace advantage. Look for jockey Abel Lezcano to take Big Bill to the front in the Thursday finale and have plenty left late to earn his first lifetime score.

Play: #4 Big Bill (2-1 ML)

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #5
#2 Desert Hawk Bit of a tough call here after this guy moved up on the dirt at Los Al last time out, as that still leaves him some proving to do on the grass after a very flat debut run going short on the turf. Could see it.
#6 Columnist Forward player has just been unable to stay in the final yards, but the two turf routes are both pretty solid, and he figures to be in the frame the whole way.
#9 Rocky Colavito Thought we'd see better from him last time out, but he has been working forwardly for this one and tries the turf for the first time -- could wake up in a hurry.
Race Summary Desert Hawk is worth another look on the turf after stretching out with a good run on the main track last time out, and I'm hoping the price will be appealing enough with some doubts about the footing.
Santa Anita Park - Race #7
#1 Cardiff Crack He has his work cut out for him, but he has been offering up some mild finishes going long in recent starts, and the last sprint try on his page was a sharp finishing effort at Los Al this summer. Think some of those company lines are pretty solid, too.
#3 Berlin Wall Dropper can be tough after only offering brief tracking pace in that Grade I try last month, but you're definitely going to take a hit on the price thanks to that classy line and the consistent prior performances.
#6 Warm Sun and Brew He hasn't done much wrong through two starts and has already shown he can handle a couple different trips. Legit chance.
Race Summary Cardiff Crack has some price appeal from off the pace, and I wonder if he and Warm Sun and Brew might be the right pair to use to try to stand against first-time turfer Berlin Wall, who is going to take action on class and dirt form.
Santa Anita Park - Race #9
#3 Island Paradise I'd be happy to sign on at something shorter than the 12/1 ML offering, as that November debut was pretty solid when facing a claiming group at first asking. Reasonable upside off that run makes him a midrange stretch player.
#2 Hardtobebetternow His baseline stuff will probably do here, but the price figures to be short with some very tough company lines for a spot like this. Hoping the top choice has enough upside, but I wouldn't blame you if you leaned on this guy.
#4 Big Bill He's another reasonable player in here with some honest form, but he has come up short at 4/5 in his two most recent starts and will take enough cash again today to be one of the choices. I dunno...
Race Summary Island Paradise has some room to come forward today with just the one start under his belt, and the class hike might also help keep the price playable.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Fair Grounds - Race #1
#3 SISTER SAINT (7-2) Could prove best of a woeful bunch, took money against 4-to-5 winner in latest.
#6 CAME UP ROSES (7-2) Hawthorne invader can make maximum use of her speed in this spot.
#1 SPICY ITALIAN (3-1) Fits well on best, moves from post 11 to rail, needs form reversal for new barn.
Race Summary SISTER SAINT has yet to run back to her 71 Beyer speed figure in a near miss at 6-1/2F at Louisiana Downs four starts ago. But she rallied 4-wide off a 10-week layoff two back and was bumped at the break in a follow-up try at this level won by Gold Plus (4-19, $65k), who came back to repeat as an odds-on favorite. Considering four of her rivals today lost by a combined 77 lengths last out, she’s worth a win and place bet. Also play 3-1 and 3-6 exactas and get started on Xpressbet’s “Bet 100, Get $10” promo for today’s card.
            Fair Grounds - Race #3
#1 DIAMOND COUNTRY (4-1) Should have every chance to carry her speed to victory in this spot.
#8 CLASSY MIMI (5-1) Got beat 2 lengths by the favorite in lone try thus far at the $5,000 level.
#9 TALKABOUT (5-1) Figures in hunt with well-timed bid despite 1-31 record, changes riders.
Race Summary DIAMOND COUNTRY blew stretch leads in her last two starts, but she held off a 4-wide bid by TALKABOUT to secure second at 6F. It could be a re-run in today’s rematch, with little speed in this shorter sprint. Bet to win and place and play 1-8 and 1-9 exactas.
            Fair Grounds - Race #4
#8 AWESOMESAUCE (7-2) Promising debut, should graduate with same move on cutback to one mile.
#5 GOOD CONDUCT (4-1) Hit board in all four turf routes at various venues but hasn’t raced in a year.
#4 TIME STONE (9-2) Steady check-getter was dismissed at 3-1 odds or less in 6 of 9 starts.
Race Summary AWESOMESAUCE, away slowly and bumped into the first turn, settled into ground-saving position and raced in-hand until mid-turn. She angled 5-wide, drew abreast of the winner in the stretch and settled for second best in a longer grass route. Make a win and place wager on today’s Best Bet.

                  #1 ROKI (ML=6/1)

FORTY TWENTY - After the contest aboard this horse on December 27th, the jockey is going to be in touch with the colt much better. No need to look any further. This racer has my dough. Way too much early speed. Diodoro, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix right here in this race. A positive sign. This entrant brings in a lot of cash per start. I believe he can add to the lifetime bankroll in this event. NITRO BOOST - This gelding is in nice physical condition. Ended up third on December 27th. I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough outings since the vacation and should be fit. Based on works, I look for this gelding to run a big race. Lucarelli adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a significant improvement. ROKI - This first timer has been getting primed in the morning at Turf Paradise, a good sign. This conditioner has an ROI of +114 with horses 1st time out.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 GLOBAL AGENDA (ML=4/1), #9 EVERY THIRD DAY (ML=8/1), #7 MAESTRO ITALIANO (ML=8/1),

GLOBAL AGENDA - Can't bet on this mount in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a short distance clash lately. This horse hasn't been in the mix in either of his last two races around the track. This vulnerable equine ran a quite unimpressive fig in the last race. He shouldn't improve and will probably get beat today running that figure. EVERY THIRD DAY - I'm forecasting a less than stellar effort out of him in today's event. MAESTRO ITALIANO - Not probable that this horse will finish better than he did last time when finishing seventh.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #4 FORTY TWENTY on top if we're getting at least 2/1 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 4 with [1,10]

                    # 6 AMENDMENT 4/1
                    # 3 FIFTH OF JUNE 5/1
SACRED LOVE is my choice. Will most likely be one of the leaders of the group going into the midpoint of the race. With a solid 70 Equibase Speed Fig last time out, will surely be a factor in this contest. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of horses lately. AMENDMENT - The speed figure of 53 from her last contest looks formidable in here. Might best this field here, showing very good numbers of late. FIFTH OF JUNE - Villasmil should be able to get this filly to break out sharply here. With a +72 return on investment, this jockey and handler combo has produced solid returns lately for wagerers.

                      # 5 JAGUAR JON 9/2
I give my vote to GRAZED here. Is a solid contender based on numbers posted recently under today's conditions. With a reliable jockey who has won at a formidable 19 percent rate over the last 30 days. This has to be one of the top selections. Will more than likely be one of the leaders of the group going into the midpoint of the competition. GOLD COUNCIL - Has very strong speed figures and has to be considered for a bet in this race. Has to be considered versus this group of horses displaying solid figs recently and an average Equibase speed fig of 99 under similar conditions. JAGUAR JON - Had one of the top Equibase Speed Figures of this group in his last contest.

                        Parx Racing - Race #2 - Post: 12:32pm - Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 79

                        Rating:

                        #3 CHARLIE'S EXPRESS (ML=7/2)
                        #8 SIR MENDEL (ML=5/1)

CHARLIE'S EXPRESS - Have to like the early speed on this one. No one else may even be close. The December 19th race at Penn National was at a class level of (88). Dropping down in class drastically, so he should be in a good position. I think this gelding is ready to run a good one. He's had enough outings since the layoff and should be fit. This thoroughbred ran outside the top 3 at Penn National last race out in the slop. He should improve in this event under better track conditions. This horse is tops in earnings per start. He looks nice in today's race. SIR MENDEL - You probably want to throw out that last race at Parx Racing on a muddy track where he finished out of the money. Should do well in this event with the benefit of a fast track. Just missed hitting the board on December 29th at Parx Racing. With respectable odds right here, he has my interest. You have to like that most recent race speed rating, 66, which is the top most recent race speed rating of this bunch.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 REAL TALENTED (ML=5/2), #1 HEY BUDDY (ML=3/1),

REAL TALENTED - This gelding hasn't had any recent good results in short distance events. I find it hard to bet on him in this race. HEY BUDDY - I'd like to see better recent efforts with morning line odds of 3/1.
