Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Spot Plays

    January 19, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The extended five-day racing week at Santa Anita Park concludes this afternoon with a special holiday card that kicks off at 3:30 PM eastern/12:30 PM local time. The card is led by the $100,000 Astra. The 1 1/2-miles event over the grass drew a compact group with Augustin Stables’ Mrs. Astor listed as a prohibitive 4-5-ML favorite. I am not in love with Mrs. Astor’s likely off odds, but also expect her to win the race, so I will likely bypass that event and focus instead on these few horses.

    Race 1:
The Martin Luther King Jr. Day opener is a state-bred MSW event for fillies and mares at one-mile over the turf where the three ML favorites all exit a similar spot at Del Mar on November 14. In that two-turn affair in San Diego County, it was 8-5-ML favorite #3 Coyote Caf finding a good spot early after breaking well, but struggling to finish with serious energy. Meanwhile, #4 Training Good continued to progress steadily for trainer Antonio Garcia with her solid late finish good enough to earn second at odds of 41-1. We are not going to get anything close to that price on this I’ll Have Another filly this afternoon, but it should be graduation day for her with an off the pace trip under jockey Armando Ayuso.

Play: #4 Training Good (2-1 ML)

    Race 3:
I am against 8-5-ML favorite #5 Video Review in this $50,000 maiden claimer at 6-furlongs over the turf. The son of Nyquist has had his chances, including last out in his first start off the claim for trainer John Sadler when he was bet down to 1-5-favoritism, yet was no match for 36-1-long shot Mutt Dillin who came into the race 0 for 9. Sadler has given Video Review some time to freshen up after the disappointing performance, but regardless I expect to be an underlay once again. I much prefer second choice #2 Arctic Power. The 4YO gelding cuts back to 1-turn for trainer Phil D’Amato after facing better going a route of ground twice to end his 2025 campaign. D’Amato has heated up at the Great Race Place over the last 14 days winning with 5 of 28 for a strong $2.92 ROI. The son of Tamayuz should be rolling late under jockey Umberto Rispoli.

Play: #2 Arctic Power (9-5 ML)

    Race 9:
There is no doubt the finale goes through 9-5-ML favorite #5 Ventry Strand. The late running son of Bolt d’Oro has a kick that should be able to out finish this group, but there are two concerns. Firstly, his last effort was a bit flat where once again he not only displayed a lack of early speed, but also failed to do any serious running late. Plus, trainer John Sadler comes into the holiday card just 2 for 25 to start the Classic Meet, so I will try to get the jump on him with first-time turfer #3 Marcos Performance. Trainer Peter Miller claimed the son of Cistron for $25k last November and added the blinkers after one start without the shades. They certainly seemed to make the gelding faster in his upset victory against open company first-level allowance foes over the dirt. It is always a major question how a runner will respond to moving from dirt-to-turf and there is not a ton of pedigree to give me a ton of confidence, so I will need at least 3-1 to gamble. That said, he should be in a good forward spot early under Ricky Gonzalez, so he has a big shot, if he takes to the course.

Play: #3 Marcos Performance (3-1 ML)

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

      January 19, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 begins in Race 5 and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 7 (9:05 PM EDT)

2-Dancin Sancho (9/2)-Needs a top of the stack trip and does like to get on the engine. That journey is within reach here and can battle with this kind.
4-Music Hall (3-1)-Put in a couple of starts at M1 on 12-27 and on 1-10, that shouldn’t hurt chances tonight. Beat the $60k claimers in the last start at YR on 12-15. Came out of the 2-hole to take a picture, and that plan could be successful again.

      Race 8 (9:25 PM EDT)

5-Mossdale Ben N (3-1)-The Peter Tritton veteran banked over $480k last year and did fade toward the end of the season. Lands in a spot to start the New Year with a win. Drops to a comfortable level and if fires hot off the bench it could be trouble for the rest of the field.
7-Always a Thrill (5/2)-This 5-year-old last raced on 12-19 and trainer Nick DeVita posts 20% winners off a layoff. The post helps the price and makes it more of a challenge, but Bartlett takes the lines. The veteran hit the board in 17 of 27 at Yonkers with 6 wins. Will be in the hunt if brings its fastball.

      Race 9 (9:45 PM EDT)

1-Alwayscuttinschool (4-1)-Slow stater makes things more difficult on itself. But shows a win here from post 1 in the fall and didn’t get the top early on. Collin Kelly will keep the DeVita trainee in contact with the leaders and should be in striking range ready to roll by.
6-Perfect Promises (6-1)-Drops to the level of its last win on 12-1, and raced on 1-3 and 1-10 at the Big M. Could be tuned up and has the gate speed to be forwardly placed. Bartlett started last year with a bang, and looking for the same on opening night.

      Race 10 (10:05 PM EDT)

1-Checkonwilliam GB (3-1)-This race could go a few different ways. Bartlett is on the pylons with a veteran who has hit the board in 11 of 15 with 6 pictures. Fits and should be racing near the top off the gate.
2-Neyreit (6-1)-Tuned up with a start on 1-3 and 1-11 at M1 and can be a square price. This is another 8-year-old that does good work at YR winning 4 of 10 starts. Yannick Gingras takes the lines and lands at the level of its last win that came at Yonkers on 11-19.
5-Over The Horizon (5/2)-Had a good December with a 1st and 2nd place finishes on the Hilltop, then took a picture on 12-20 at the Big M. Was scratched sick on 12-28 but if 100% knows how to dance with this kind and has won 7 of 17 at YR.
6-Americagreatagain (4-1)-Winner of only 3 races last year and 2 pictures came after being dropped to face this kind in December. Was put away in sharp form and is a main threat if comes back racing the same way.

      $1 Late Pick 4

      2,4/5,7/1,6/1,2,5,6
      Total Bet=$32

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Fair Grounds - Race #6
#3 Prepped Price probably isn't going to be much here after just missing when facing some of these, but I think you can lean on him to land this one.
#1 Matching Funds Think he has room to run to something better today while adding blinkers with the debut run under his belt, and the price should be right to see if he has enough upside to share here with the chalk on top.
#2 Prince Of Light He ran well enough last out when only a couple lengths off of the choice in that same common race, and he wouldn't really be any surprise for top connections. Capable, but I'm not convinced.
Race Summary Prepped has turned in two solid tries to open his career, and something like his last would probably make him tough against this group -- and there might still be some upside.
        Fair Grounds - Race #7
#5 Lucius Verus Not a ton of serious front-end pace lined up in here, so I'm wondering if he can use that speed from the Horseshoe Indianapolis score to find the front end and turn these away.
#9 Benji Star He's in good form and fits well with this group, and he has enough tactical pace to keep a spying sight on the top choice if that one starts to shake free. Dangerous.
#8 Invictus Worry that he's going to get overbet a bit in here with form that feels kind of uninspiring, but I also might be holding some flat lines against him that came against better groups than he's going to find today.
Race Summary Fun race. Lucius Verus showed a bit of pace to score going away in that last out while handling a short group, but I think that effort keeps him in the picture with these with a potentially flattering race flow waiting for him.
        Fair Grounds - Race #9
#12 Bright Note Not sure we're getting the 5/1 ML offering on this one while dropping in with a dreamy prompting trip waiting for her from the high draw, but I think she's supposed to be a handful here. Suppose there is a mild worry about the drop after the fading try at 3/5...
#10 It's Been Real She makes sense, but she has been knocking on the door her whole career and probably takes just enough cash to be an uninteresting play again.
#3 Obstacle Gal Get a look at her on the tote and track, but this seems like a reasonable enough spot for her to debut with a worktab that is regular, even if it isn't flashy.
Race Summary Bright Note drops after failing to stay late as the chalk last time out, but this feels like a drop-to-win kind of spot with a beautiful setup if she has anything in the tank.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Parx - Race #1
#4 SHINING SPIRIT (4-1) Good overall record, good spot to get back on the winning track.
#3 FUHGEDDABOUDIT (5-1) Won easily from post 10 to start year after winless 2025 season.
#8 LA GROTTE (7-2) Rallied for a win and two seconds in shorter sprints recently at Finger Lakes.
Race Summary SHINING SPIRIT drops below her claim level for a high-percentage barn in her first long sprint attempt. The $121k earner has tactical speed and lands in a good spot to recapture the form that led to three wins in 2025. Bet to win and place and play 4-3 and 4-8 exactas.
          Parx - Race #2
#6 FIVE NINE FIFTY (6-1) Must stay in closer contact with the favorites early, worth a price shot.
#1 LAUGHING LADY (2-1) New York invader has speed and the rail, puts the blinkers back on.
#5 CHAMPAGNE MISCHIEF (5-2) ‘Dueled’ for a win and two seconds in her last seven starts.
Race Summary FIVE NINE FIFTY is 8/1-3-1 at 6F in a field that is a combined 3-for-39 at the distance. She finished 2 lengths behind morning-line second choice CHAMPAGNE MISCHIEF last out, but she gets more speed to rally into and can turn the tables with a better start.
          Parx - Race #5
#5 SHEZA BERNARDINI (5-2) Company lines stand out as she looks for first win at 6-1/2F and at Parx.
#4 GIA’S FUEGO (12-1) Recaptured competitive form in December, plenty of value remains.
#6 WINKIWINKI (7-2) Beaten favorite in 4 of her last 9 starts at this distance.
Race Summary SHEZA BERNARDINI is eligible for this spot by five days and she should capitalize after finishing second to Getaway Place (6-26, $203k) and Sonadora Girl (7-22, $125k) in her last two starts. She is 0-for-4 at 6-1/2F but should join the $100,000 Club with a victory today. Bet to win and place and play 5-4 and 5-6 exactas.

PAYASO seems to be the bet in here. This horse with Velez in the irons makes him a key contender. Ought to go to the front end and should never look back. This horse has a strong win percentage in dirt sprint races. FALCAT SALUTE - Betancourt has one of the best winning percentages in this field with entries running at this distance and surface. Looks competitive to be close to the front end at the first call.

                  Parx Racing - Race #8 - Post: 3:14pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $50,000 Class Rating: 78

                  Rating:

#3 GOLD IN MY HANDS (ML=5/2)

GOLD IN MY HANDS - A wise man taught me to play the lone speed horse. Take a look at this thoroughbred. This gelding is in first-rate condition right now. Finished third last out and comes back quickly.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #1 N. Y. FINEST (ML=2/1), #6 SAM'S GLORY (ML=7/2), #5 BUFF GARY (ML=9/2),

                  N. Y. FINEST - Will probably be way back with too much to do down the stretch. SAM'S GLORY - This stretch-runner looks to have slight chance without an early battle up front. BUFF GARY - The fourth place finish position in the last event was not the greatest. The Brain always warns me to keep my distance from horses in short distance contests that haven't hit the board in sprint contests lately.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 6 CROSSRIGHTHANDS 5/2
                    # 3 KARAOKE HERO 7/2
                    # 4 I GOT THE MOVES 8/1
CROSSRIGHTHANDS looks formidable to best this field. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the top class numbers of this group. Has competitive speed figures and has to be considered for a wager in this race. Has very strong early pace and will probably fare soundly versus this field. KARAOKE HERO - Is difficult not to consider based on speed figs which have been respectable - 63 avg - of late. Is a key contender - given the 71 speed figure from his most recent race. I GOT THE MOVES - Green is serious with this one, wheeling him back almost immediately. This racer could shock this bunch at a nice price.

Turf Paradise - Race #8 - Post: 4:24pm - Maiden Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 92

                      Rating:

                      #2 GRINNELL (ML=8/1)

GRINNELL - Quite frequently, I play a maiden that finished in the place spot easily ahead of the third-place horse in his last race.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #8 RENO (ML=2/1), #4 HELA FOREVER (ML=5/1), #9 AINT BEHAVIN (ML=6/1),

RENO - Should have at least finished in the money in the last sixty days in a short distance clash to be worth a shot at short odds in a sprint. I usually try to beat these types of favorites off the extended layoff. HELA FOREVER - Doubtful that the speed figure he notched on Dec 29th will hold up in this race. AINT BEHAVIN - Granted the last race was good, finishing third. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 GRINNELL to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better
