Jeremy Plonk: Louisiana Downs Bet $100, Get $10 Tuesday Picks

    by Jeremy Plonk

The Frosty Funds promotion continues Tuesdays and Thursdays throughout January. Take advantage of the Bet $100, Get $10 promotion this week on Tuesday's card from Louisiana Downs when you bet with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet. Here are a couple of key plays on the all-AQHA racing card.

    Louisiana Downs: Race 4

#3 Headed North (8-1 morning line odds) comes out of a fast race for the level at Evangeline Downs and is consistently a clean breaker, giving her a chance in most situations. Breaking next to the morning line favorite could be good news in terms of trip, and note the Rodriguez-Clark jockey-trainer tandem wins 25% at Louisiana Downs with a solid flat-bet profit. Win #3. Exacta key-box 3 with 2,4. Daily Doubles 3-5 largest; 2,4 with 5 smaller.

    Louisiana Downs: Race 5

#5 Mr Chato Perez (10-1 morning line odds) brings classier Lone Star Park AQHA form and should fit extremely well with this allowance class. Has run some of his fastest races around 300 yards, so the 400-yarder at Evangline last out simply may been beyond his best reach. Cut-back to 250 yards seems live. Win-place #5.

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #2
#1 Colonel Poppy Hoping a little break in the forecast will get racing back on track, and this one feels like a solid lean here while in reliable form. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him turn the tables from the last one.
#5 Hemp Heaven He's not all that consistent, but his better stuff has been competitive with similar groups, and the price might be appealing enough again.
#6 Puff'smagicdragon Wouldn't argue that hard with anyone landing here and feeling good about it -- he has proven to be a reliable finisher and has been in the mix with some of these in recent starts. Still think he's going to be overbet comparatively.
Race Summary Colonel Poppy should get a good finishing run in here, and I like that he has a touch of tactical pace at times if needed. He and Hemp Heaven look like the right kind of two-deep play.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#2 Carnival Rock The only loss in his three starts came in stakes company, and he should find himself in a really good spot while tracking the slightly quicker players early. Lots to like.
#3 Pupil His dangerous pace makes sense, but I feel like he could take just a tiny bit too much heat from a couple of early shots here. In the mix.
#5 El Muchacho Alegre He should be in the picture early and in a good spot to try to get first jump at Pupil on the turn, and the local form is compelling enough when you forgive the stakes try.
Race Summary Carnival Rock may still have some upside here while making the first start of his 3-year-old season and getting Lasix for the first time. Think the race shape helps, too.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #9
#9 Lil Sharpie She's a bit short on excuses overall, but she honestly didn't have the easiest go of things last time out, and I think she might be able to land this one if she can move forward just a touch off that one.
#3 First Kiss Ever She has a couple of forward works on her page ahead of this, so take a look at her on the tote and track. Wouldn't be a shock to see a fresh face land this one.
#6 Roses N Lace She was no threat to the winner, but she moved forward last out when second at 85/1 and could presumably build on that one in her first local start. I dunno.
Race Summary Lil Sharpie seems to be slowly heading in the right direction and might get a slightly better trip today -- that small bit may be enough to get her home.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Turf Paradise - Race #2
#2 LOOKIN FOR CURLY (4-1) Wide trip took its toll in first start locally, wouldn’t expect 4-1 odds.
#6 WEST IS WEST (5-2) Beat ‘Curly’ by ? of a length and should get the jump on him again.
#5 KING OF THE DISCO (7-2) Useful return off five-month layoff, lack of pace in race the concern.
Race Summary LOOKIN FOR CURLY finished between three of the same rivals he faces today in his second start off a two-month freshening for a new barn. He was compromised by an overland trip that found him 5-wide much of the way. He should have no such problems in a shorter field with a better post. Bet to win and place and play 2-5 and 2-6 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #3
#4 KING ELVIS (5-1) Tactical speed could make the difference for $70k turf earner at this distance.
#2 DEL RAYO (7-2) Chased 1:09.4 split for 6F and ‘kept on’ to finish second in the same spot.
#7 SPENARD (4-1) Proven main-track miler transitions to lawn off blazing :45.2 workout on dirt.
Race Summary Something has to give in this one-mile turf test and it’s probably going to be the pace. KING ELVIS has at least shown he can rate and can parlay those tactics into a win off a 7-1/2F grass race for a cheaper claiming tag, when he loomed boldly for the stretch drive but flattened out. Bet to win and place and play 2-5 and 4-5 daily doubles.
        Turf Paradise - Race #4
#5 MOM SAYS (4-1) Ran a big one for sizzling barn, taken to repeat as today’s Best Bet.
#8 REACH HIGHER (6-1) Upstaged in-the-money finishes with win at the mile.
#3 CHASING RAIN (5-2) Diodoro acquisition showed little in Cali in limited 4yo season.
Race Summary MOM SAYS dueled from mid-turn to mid-stretch and ‘continued on with good energy’ to hold safe the troubled 3-to-5 favorite for the win and earn the top speed figure of his career. Trainer Michael Pierce is clicking on all cylinders of late, so expect another big effort instead of a ‘bounce.’ Bet to win and place and play a 5-ALL exacta.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #3 - Post: 2:09pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 52

              Rating:

              #2 CASHOUT CAROL (ML=7/2)

CASHOUT CAROL - This filly ran well in her last race but just couldn't beat the winner. Note that she was well clear of the show horse, and looks like a major contender in this field. Earnings per start is something that I think can be a most important handicapping factor. This thoroughbred is ranked number one in this group.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #6 CARMALIETA (ML=5/2), #3 ZAYLA (ML=4/1), #7 AROA (ML=4/1),

CARMALIETA - This filly didn't do much for me last time out of the box. ZAYLA - Just can't bet on this vulnerable equine. Didn't show me anything last time around the track or on November 13th. AROA - When scrutinizing today's Equibase class figure, she will have to notch a better speed rating than last out to be competitive in this dirt route.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #2 CASHOUT CAROL to win if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

                # 10 GREAT KING (FR) 4/1
                # 8 OUTOFQUEMADO 20/1
                # 3 DRILL'S LI'L MAN 8/1
GREAT KING (FR) appears to be the bet in here. Could provide positive returns based on very good recent speed figures with an average of 91. Will most likely come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved promptly to the front end recently. Is a definite contender - given the 94 Equibase Speed Fig from his most recent race. OUTOFQUEMADO - When a conditioner brings any equine back this soon it is a positive sign. With a nice class fig average of 92, has one of the top class advantages in this group of horses. DRILL'S LI'L MAN - Going in a dirt sprint race gives this gelding a decent shot. One of the best win percentages between this jock and trainer make this gelding dangerous.

                  Rating:

                  #3 CRAIGH NA DUN (ML=5/1)

CRAIGH NA DUN - Generally accepted handicapping theory - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. A live one today. Forgive the off the board finish on the off track in the last race. Without the off-track conditions, has a shot right here.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #2 WEEK'S STRONG (ML=9/5), #7 PASTERO (ML=5/2), #6 IT'SSPRINGBOIII (ML=6/1),

WEEK'S STRONG - Tough to put your money on the win end of any thoroughbred that finishes second and third as regularly as this participant does. Improbable that the speed figure he notched on Nov 28th will be enough in this race. PASTERO - This animal doesn't have a champion's state of mind. Always finishes in the place and show spots. IT'SSPRINGBOIII - This equine hasn't been in the mix in either of his last couple of races. Don't believe this entrant will do much running in today's event. That last fig was most unsatisfactory when compared with today's class rating.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 CRAIGH NA DUN to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better
                  EXACTA WAGERS: Pass

DONY DIEGO clearly looks like the contender to beat in this one. Hard to put finger on it, but back him here. This race could be controlled by this gelding. Just one look at the avgerage TrackMaster Speed Rating will prove that. Achieved a 70 TrackMaster SR last out. A duplicate performance here should get the victory in this event. SUMMER GETAWAY - It's somewhat dicey to consider solely based on class, but this mare has among the most solid class figures of the field of horses. When the starter calls, contenders coming out of the 1 position have more wins than you would expect. TROTEN AWAY - Achieved a 63 speed figure last out. A duplicate event here should get the victory in this event.

BROOKVIEW FREDDY surely figures to be the race horse to beat this time. This nice horse may have some hidden form, a triumph would be a pleasant surprise. May provide us a score based on really good recent speed ratings - earning an avg of 78. With Hanners in the sulky, watch out for this entrant to get the trip to the winner's circle. BOURBONONTHEROCKS - The trainer/horse combo statistics point out that this duet are solid in the money finishers when working as a team. This race could very well be controlled by this gelding. A single look at the avgerage TrackMaster speed fig will confirm that. ROSE RUN ZION - Getting a good feel about this gelding. Could surprise here.
