Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card, The $1.00 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool rolls in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 7, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 7 (8:45 PM EST)

1-Mossdale Ben N (4-1)-My thinking is the connections were okay with last week's effort. Left from the 5-hole, dropped back and was far behind into a slow 58.4 opening half. Cashed a small check and rolled the 2nd half in a swift 54.3. Will look for an aggressive steer this time in a contentious affair.
4-Soho Dow Jones A (5/2)-Came out of the pocket to win but won’t hold an efficient trip against the Dilloian entry. It was a quick mile and the first start in over a month. Loses Jason Bartlett but gets Yannick Gingras and should be in play early on. Could double up at a square price.
7-Lou Hill (3-1)-Lou isn’t a familiar face at Yonkers, has 1 win in only 3 starts. Its last race was at the end of December, beating Open company at the Big M in 1.49 flat. Bartlett sticks with Engblom instead staying on Soho Dow Jones. Has been off for almost a month but if dialed on high could beat this crew. Does have the gate speed to land in a good early seat.

Race 8 (9:05 PM EST)

1-American Dealer N (9/5)-Comes into this affair after racing well on Jan 10th and Jan 17th at M1. Brett Beckwith sticks, the veteran has won 17 of 89 at Yonkers and could look to go gate to wire.
3-Whichwaytothebeach (8-1)-Will fade Bartlett on the 3/2 chalk, #2 Curly James and look for better value. Started from post 7 on 1-19 after being off over a month. Was 16 lengths back at the half and came home in a quick .55 flat. Should be a large price, has the gate speed to race with the leaders, drops, and could be overlooked.

Race 9 (9:25 PM EST)

5-Music Hall (9/2)-Beckwith steers for Chris Height and those 2 post 27% winners together. Money showed last week and the beaten chalk tried to go gate to wire but faded. Has won 16 of 40 at Yonkers and could reward backers in the 2nd start in town. Will fade #1-What’s Stanley Got A the morning line chalk, who has had the same post for the previous 2 starts.
7-Miki Shan N (10-1)-Raced evenly last week off a month hiatus and now drops to a spot to shine. Gingras sticks and he posts 20% winners for the Daguet barn. Miki likes to win, took 13 pictures in 25 races last year. Will look for Gingras to have the pedal down from the word "Go" and the price is right to take a swing.

Race 10 (9:45 PM EST)

1-Checkonwilliam GB (7/2)-Comes of an even effort at 9/5 with Bartlett steering. Gingras takes over and has done good work at YR (17-6-4-2). Hadn't raced since 12-15, now comes back in sequence at a level where pictures were taken, and is a logical use.
2-Black Hawk Joe A (4-1)-Doesn't usually show much gate speed as was the case last week in the 1st race off the bench. Left from post 3 and landed 5th, then the half went in .59. Did pace the 2nd half in 57.2 and lost the race by 3/4 of a length. Needs a close-up seat off the gate and if so chances for a win go up.
3-Ulysses (3-1)-The 5-year-old beat the $40K claimers in the fall and came a close 2nd to $25K claimers. Has been racing at M1 up the claiming ranks without any success in the last 4 races. Drops, and may have met a beatable field. Could be no worse than in the pocket after the wings fold.

Turf Paradise - Race #5

#8 Mo Grey	Tactical type is in good form and has run well on the main in the past, so there are a lot of good reasons to think he'll be competitive today. Perfect trip should help him home -- might hammer these.
#6 Manx Missile	He has at least shown enough positional pace to keep himself in the frame into the far turn, but he has yet to show any real interest from there, with three hard fade jobs on his page from as many races. Suppose that last one was less bad and could keep him in the mix with a soft group.
#2 Senor Tequilas	He wasn't particularly competitive last out when a distant third, but he outran his 46/1 price that day and at least showed a little bit of life. One of the ones.
Race Summary	Not sure Mo Grey is going to offer that 3/1 ML price, but I'd be thrilled if he did. Think he's going to get a great trip while in some of the best form of the bunch.

Turf Paradise - Race #7

#4 Crusher Royale	Not quite sure he's on the same level as the next guy right now, but I did like the local turf debut and think something similar might do the trick.
#2 Djoser	Think he's the one to beat while rising to try winners, as his turf form has always been pretty honest, and he should find another good spot right up near the top. One of these two.
#6 Moneyline	Suppose his better efforts would make him a player with the top pair, and he should be in a pretty good spot into the far turn. Could probably be talked into considering a rebound effort.
Race Summary	Crusher Royale and Djoser really do feel like the right pair, but I think Moneyline is better than his last and can probably get in the picture. Build the exotics around him sharing.

Turf Paradise - Race #8

#6 Tempting Mischief	He doesn't seem to have really figured things out yet, but he flashed some sharp pace and stopped suddenly in the last one -- the addition of Lasix could be a fix for that. Blinkers coming off may help him ration his pace a touch better, too. I'm interested.
#5 In a Pickle	He might be best in a bad bunch, but I'm not all that enthused about the form overall and wouldn't want any kind of short number here.
#9 Bold Prospect	Take a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this, but he's not meeting much at all and at least has turned in a few relatively quick works for a horse of this level along the way.
Race Summary	Tempting Mischief has only been cheap speed so far, but getting Lasix while dropping the blinkers might be enough to him stick around better today while still offering an OK price.
