Turfway Park - Race #5

#8 Stoic Sage	Fresh face lands in what feels like a reasonable spot for a newcomer, and there isn't a whole lot of finishing punch on paper in here. Wonder if he could be a one-paced kind of threat right out of the box.
#2 Jorge's Ace	Speed has not been able to stay in any of his starts just yet, but this is a softer group than he has seen so far. Still worried that there is just enough other pace to keep him honest.
#11 Organized	He got past some horses when trying the local company in December, and I can see a scenario in which he tucks over closer to the rail to save a little ground before launching a rally on the far turn. In the mix.
Race Summary	Stoic Sage goes first out with a questionable group waiting for him, and I'm hoping he's reasonably placed and ready to offer something competitive.

Turfway Park - Race #6

#5 Gentleman Jim	Tactical speed should get a good go of things, and he has turned in a couple works since that start here last month. Could be ready for a bit better, which is all it would take.
#6 Section	Price probably gets shorter here after the good run at 13/1 last time out, but I wouldn't argue too hard with anyone taking that one at face value and going back in hopes something similar will land it.
#9 High Honors	The turf form is compelling enough to think it'll play well here, and he's quick enough to sit up close while making his local debut. Worried the price might be a touch short.
Race Summary	Gentleman Jim has the right style to find a first-over run with this group, and even if he takes a bit of cash, I still think he's a minimum $8 horse as a few others should command attention, too.

Race Summary	JADE’S WICKED DOLL worked three times from the gate recently and need not be much to contend for a 26-percent first-out barn. Her dam, Buckskin Doll (13/3-3-2, $87k) won in her second start. Bet to win and place and play 5-1 and 5-8 exactas.

Delta Downs - Race #2

#3 LO LO’S LAUGHTER (8-1	Good form, good company lines, good trip projected in seasonal debut.
#4 WHISKEY AND EAST (4-1)	FG invader has good speed, has to carry it farther, lures Del-Cid to ride.
#6 EL MERO MERO (3-1)	Steady low-60 Beyer type could need passing gear in this spot.
Race Summary	LO LO’S LAUGHTER begins his 7-year-old season in good form. He met four consecutive repeat winners in the second half of 2025 and paired up 64 Beyer speed figures in contending efforts to close the year in longer sprints. He should work out a good stalking trip in a speed-laden field. Bet to win and place and play 3-4 and 3-6 exactas.

Delta Downs - Race #6

#5 CATALINA DAY (10-1)	Been facing decent rivals, worked :34-4/5 bullet from Fair Grounds gate since last start.
#8 PRINCE JAMES (8-5)	Romped in 5 of 7 starts in 2025, looms short price despite layoff since September claim.
#2 HANDSOME HAROLD (7-2)	Re-awakened with second-time blinkers to win, eligible for this spot by 4 days.
Race Summary	CATALINA DAY won back-to-back 5F sprints during a $46k season in 2025. He back-pedaled to last in his most recent start against a top pair of quarter-million dollar earners. Bet to win and place and play a 5, 8/2, 5, 8/2, 3, 4, 5, 8 trifecta.

Scott Shapiro: Wednesday Tampa/Turfway Promo Picks | February 4, 2026

After unveiling a new promotion on Wednesdays in January, the marketing team at Xpressbet and 1/ST BET has opted to wheel it back for another month! For those new to things or that missed the promo in January it is simple. Just bet $50 on both Tampa Bay Downs and Turfway Park on any Wednesday in February and get a $10 bonus. The first of 4 “Wednesday Wins” opportunities comes tomorrow where they should be back in action in Kentucky. Just be sure to register for this new promo on the landing page. Here are a few horses I will be leaning on to kick off the week at Tampa and Turfway.


Race 4: Tampa Bay Downs

This two-turn turf event for maiden claimers drew an oversubscribed field of non-winners available for $32k, including #2 Thirsted. The New York-bred makes his first start of 2026 and under the handling of trainer Darien Rodriguez after four starts at Aqueduct this fall for veteran conditioner Michelle Nevin. Rodriguez is having an excellent meet thus far winning 7 of 30 starters heading into the new racing week and this Frosted gelding should have a pace advantage on the stretch out to a route of ground for the first time. The pedigree suggests the added ground should not be an issue, so hopefully jockey Cipriano Gil can get him out of the gate in good order and relax him on the backstretch. If so, his 5-1-ML offering could prove favorable.

Play: #2 Thirsted (5-1 ML)


Race 4: Turfway Park

This competitive second-level allowance at the tricky 6.5-furlong distance goes through #8 My Own. The Tapwrit gelding comes off a dominant win against first-level allowance foes on January 8. He had things his way that day and could again here, but I prefer 7-time winner #5 The Great Oz. The 8YO gelding makes his second start over this surface and since entering the Joe Sharp barn late last year. His lone try over the Turfway synthetic was a good one where he relaxed nicely in the pocket and put forth a strong second to a runner for Mike Maker that has really taken to the move to Florence. I like that this son of Liam’s Map is capable of going to the front or sitting just off the early pace. Either way, I expect a strong performance with Joe Ramos taking the call for the initial time.

Play: The Great Oz (4-1 ML)


Race 8: Turfway Park

Trainer Larry Rivelli enters two in this $50k claimer for non-winners of two at six-furlongs, including my top choice #8 Flame Dancer. The daughter of Flameaway made her first start over the all-weather on December 4 for former trainer Arnaud Delacour and it was better than the fourth-place finish suggests. The 4YO gal broke well and was down on the inside in a speed duel through the early stages of that race versus similar late last year and eventually gave way to a trio of runners from off the pace. I expect Flame Dancer to get a much different type of trip on Wednesday evening given the move to an outside draw, plenty of speed signed on her to inside, and a rider switch to the more patient Walter Rodriguez. A stalk and pounce voyage from the outside should be good enough to get her to the wire first for the third time in her career.

1^st race [Md 75000, 7F] – (6) Gualillo (A) dropped back, rallied wide, and was third in a blanket finish. (1) Oil Capital was third for $50,000 in November at Churchill Downs and was claimed by Linda Rice and the same can be said about (5) Antietam who was claimed in October in Kentucky by Rice as the 8-5 favorite. (3) Free Spin returns to the claiming ranks where was second twice recently.

2^nd race [OC 50k/SAL, 6F] – (7) Ohoopee won her first two starts in a Keeneland maiden special weight and then got claimed for $50,000 at Churchill in November. She was second in an OC allowance in her first start for Linda Rice three weeks ago. (5) Daniella Marie won a $75,000 maiden by more than nine lengths and then was third in a NY-bred stakes and allowance. (2) Admiral Solwon a $50,000 NY-bred maiden by six-lengths in her only start. (1) St. Brigid’s Cross won for $50,000 and then got claimed for $75,000 by the red-hot Brad Cox barn.

5^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (2) Bafflehas had consistent results and finished second in December for Repole and Pletcher. (1) Some Ridewas third in her debut in December. (7) Just Tell Anne returns from a November layoff, goes from turf to dirt, and when last seen finished third after having to check and clipping heels. (4) Saratoga Party missed by a neck in her second start and that kind of effort makes her a win contender.

8^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 6 ? F] – (7) Hurricane Kaz (C) was bet down from 17-1 to 13-1, raced with Lasix for the first time, set the pace, and finished second beaten by only a half-length. (14) B Thedonald (B) broke last in his debut at 5-1 and rallied for third. (10) Diamond Life (C) was bet down from 9-2 to 2-1, set the pace, and was second by a length. (13) Pride of the Union returns from a November layoff when he was a close third after racing wide between horses and the second-place horse became a return winner.

Best bets: Gualillo (1^st); Ohoopee (2^nd). Best value: Baffle (5^th); Hurricane Kaz (8^th).

HEAT ALERT - You should normally bet against morning-line choices that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last 3 weeks. The pace scenario just isn't too promising for this speed merchant. Many other horses would have to scratch to help his chances. B D SAINTS - Unlikely that the fig he registered on Dec 23rd will hold up in this race. WHITEWALKER - Caution must be used since front wraps were added on December 23rd. Should be difficult for this horse to beat this group off of that last speed rating.
