What Bettors Need To Know: FIU vs. Marshall
        By Covers Staff

Florida International vs. Marshall (+4, 48)

        BEEF ‘O’BRADY’S BOWL STORYLINES

        1. Making consecutive bowl appearances for the first time in school history, Florida International comes in after winning a school-record eight games. The Golden Panthers closed the season with four victories in their final five games.

        2. Marshall needed overtime to beat East Carolina in its regular-season finale, 34-27, and become bowl eligible. The Thundering Herd won three of their final four games and return to a bowl after a one-year absence, but gave up 30.2 points per contest.

        3. The Golden Panthers will have their hands full with Marshall defensive end Vinny Curry, who recorded 21.5 tackles for loss this season (second in the nation). The 6-foot-4 senior forced six fumbles, tied for second in the nation, and his 11 sacks tied for fifth in the country.

        4. Marshall averaged just 22 points per game, ranking 98th in the nation, but scored 57 points in its final two contests in wins over Memphis and East Carolina. The Thundering Herd will be challenged by a FIU defense that ranked 16th in the nation in scoring defense, allowing just 19.4 points.

TV: ESPN, ESPN3.com LINE: Florida International –4.

ABOUT FLORIDA INTERNATIONAL (8-4, 5-3 Sun Belt Conference): The Golden Panthers did their best work early in the season (winning their first three games) and late (winning their final three contests). Senior quarterback Wesley Carroll threw just four interceptions in 303 passing attempts, finishing with 2,224 passing yards and 14 touchdowns. FIU scored 27 points or more in five of its eight victories, and averaged 33.3 points during its current three-game winning streak.

ABOUT MARSHALL (6-6, 5-3 Conference USA): Facing the 15th-toughest schedule in the nation, the Thundering Herd set a school record by winning five conference games, placing second in the C-USA East Division. Marshall lost three of its first four games before upsetting Louisville 17-13 on Oct. 1. Freshman quarterback Rakeem Cato passed for 341 yards in the victory over East Carolina, but threw 10 interceptions this season. Five of Marshall’s six victories were by seven points or less.

        TRENDS:

The Golden Panthers are 4-1 ATS in their last five games following a ATS win but 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as favorites.

Thundering Herd are 6-1 ATS in their last 7 bowl games.

The under is 6-1-1 in Golden Panthers' last 8 games overall while the over is 4-1 in Thundering Herd last 5 games overall.

        LINE MOVEMENT:

The books opened Florida International as 4.5-point chalk and there hasn't been much movement. The line did get bet down to 3.5 at couple shops but it didn't stay there for long. Most sportsbooks have FIU listed as a 4-point favorite.

The total opened at 49.5 and even 50 at a few locations. The number has been bet down to 48 pretty much across the board.

PREDICTION: Florida International 27, Marshall 16 – Curry is a major defensive force, but Carroll’s experience will make the difference for the Golden Panthers

          Tuesday's Best CFB Bet

Florida International Golden Panthers vs. Marshall Thundering Herd (+4, 48)

The college football bowl game odds opened up with the Golden Panthers as 4.5 point favorites over Marshall. The early betting trend by the public saw 60% of the money on FIU, but the line started to drop and now can be found as low as 3.5 at some offshore sportsbooks. This is often an indication of smart money, but there is more to this game than just a line. Click Here for Odds on all the BCS Games

The Golden Panthers finished with an 8-4 record on the season and that is a franchise record at FIU. The Panthers hope to carry this momentum into the game against Marshall. When the Panthers take the field, the offense will grab the spotlight. Wesley Carroll is under center and has been hot down the stretch avoiding costly upsets that will hurt any college team. His top target is T.Y. Hilton who is arguably the best player on the field. Hilton is a playmaker and owns most of the receiving records on the Panthers. The Thundering Herd will have their hands full on defense.

The Herd comes in with a nice little streak, winning four out of the last six games to become bowl eligible and nab this invite. On defense they have a big piece to work with as Vinny Curry, the 2011 C-USA Defensive Player of the Year will lead the team in this game. This unit caused 28 turnovers on the season and can drastically change this game.

On offense freshman signal-caller Rakeem Cato is under center, but he is not playing like a freshman. He was 23 of 29 for 341 yards and two touchdowns against East Carolina and if he puts up that kind of output in this game the Herd could win this game.

The Golden Panthers are 2-5 ATS in their last 7 games as a favorite and 1-6 ATS in their last seven games on turf. The Thundering Herd is 7-1 ATS in their last eight games in December and 6-1 ATS in their last seven Bowl games

The Herd has an edge on defense and that will be enough to keep this game close, so the points are the play.

BEEF O’BRADY’s BOWL PICK: Marshall Thundering Herd +4.5

NBA: Detroit is 3-7 against the number in its last 10 vs. Cleveland.

              KEY STAT

8.5 – Washington Capitals captain Alexander Ovechkin is scoring on just 8.5 percent of his shots this season. He sits tied for seventh with 117 shots on goal, but has scored just 10 times heading into Tuesday’s game against Nashville.

              INJURY THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVERLOOKED

Terrence Jones, Kentucky Wildcats - Jones is questionable to play against Samford on Tuesday because of a dislocated finger. Jones suffered the injury in Saturday's win over Chattanooga, leaving the game in the second half. Jones has missed two straight practices and coach John Calipari doesn't think the 6-foot-9 sophomore will start on Tuesday. Jones is averaging 12.4 points and 6.2 rebounds on the season.

              GAME OF THE DAY

Florida International Golden Panthers at Marshall Thundering Herd (+4, 48)
More than 64 percent of Covers.com Consensus bettors were supporting Florida International as of Monday night.

              NOTABLE QUOTABLE

"We've gotten to the point where everybody started overlooking us and talking about everybody else and I kind of got (mad) about it. Y'all trying to take something away from us that we've worked hard for and we took. We earned everything we did last year. Everybody on this team earned the right to be addressed as world champions, so everybody needs to address them like that." – Dallas Mavericks forward Shawn Marion. The books opened Dallas’ season win total at 44.5. The Mavs are set as 4-point underdogs Tuesday against Oklahoma City.

              TIPS AND NOTES

All-American center Jared Sullinger will be on the court when second-ranked Ohio State plays Lamar on Tuesday night, coach Thad Matta said. Sullinger left Saturday's win over South Carolina with a foot injury, which was later determined to be an injured tendon. Matta said Sullinger has been feeling better with each passing day. Sullinger has also missed a pair of games this season with back spasms. He is averaging 16.6 points and 9.3 rebounds on the campaign.

Purdue will be without the services of wide receiver O.J. Ross in its upcoming Little Caesars Bowl against Western Michigan. Ross was suspended on Dec. 6 for violating team rules, which was later found to be academic related. The sophomore is the Boilermakers' third-leading receiver in both receptions (33) and yards (356) this season. He also had three touchdowns for Purdue, which plays in its bowl game on Dec. 27. The Boilermakers are set as 2.5-point favorites.

Calgary Flames left wing Rene Bourque has been suspended two games on Monday following his hit on Chicago Blackhawks defenseman Brent Seabrook. The former Blackhawk drove Seabrook headfirst into the glass during the first period during Sunday's 4-2 loss. Seabrook did not return to the contest, while Bourque was handed a major penalty and a game misconduct. Bourque, who has collected seven points in his last nine games, has recorded 11 goals, three assists and 31 penalty minutes this season. He will miss Tuesday's game against the Minnesota Wild and Thursday's contest versus the Detroit Red Wings.

                Tuesday's Best NHL Bets

Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins (+110, 5.5)

With the news that Sidney Crosby had been returned to the injured reserve hovering over the Pittsburgh Penguins, Evgeni Malkin put on a scoring display to make The Kid proud Saturday night.

Malkin scored three times and added a pair of assists to help the Pens to an 8-3 drubbing of the Buffalo Sabres, snapping a two-game losing streak.

"He's the guy right now,” Matt Cooke told reporters of Malkin. “He can't look anywhere else. It's got to be on him, and he knows that. He understands that, and he's playing very well."

Malkin now leads the team with 36 points in 25 games and is riding a major hot streak with 12 points in his last six outings. The Blackhawks come into this one having won five games in a row, but Pittsburgh is one of the best home teams in the league.

The Pens have just three regulation losses on home ice this year.

                PICK: Pittsburgh Penguins

Nashville Predators at Washington Capitals (-140, 5.5)

The great thing about the Nashville Predators is that they never seem content.

With Saturday’s 2-1 shootout win over the surging St. Louis Blues, the Predators have now won five straight keeping them in the middle of the Western Conference playoff hunt. Still, the Preds weren’t satisfied.

“It’s good to get the four points, but we didn’t play great against Detroit, and I don’t think we played very well tonight,” captain Shea Weber told reporters Saturday.

Imagine what the Capitals would do for that kind of message in their dressing room - following a win, no less. Dale Hunter still hasn’t been able to get consistent results from Washington. It’s the same old story too. Outside of Nicklas Backstrom, there aren’t many guys pulling their own weight right now.

Alex Ovechkin has just 10 goals on 117 shots and Alex Semin scored for the first time in nine games in Saturday’s loss. It was his sixth goal of the year.

                PICK: Nashville Predators

Chicago Blackhawks at Pittsburgh Penguins (+110, 5.5)

THE STORY: Evgeni Malkin has done his best to compensate for the loss of Sidney Crosby. The former Art Ross and Conn Smythe winner has collected six goals and six assists during a five-game point streak. The stretch coincides with Crosby returning to the press box because of a recurrence of concussion-like symptoms. Malkin recorded his seventh career hat trick in an 8-3 triumph over the Buffalo Sabres on Saturday and was named the NHL's third star of the week. "I’m not thinking about my points,” Malkin said. "I'm just starting to find my level and am trying to play better every game." Teammate Matt Cooke has noticed that Malkin has been more focused in recent games. "He's the guy right now. He can't look anywhere else," Cooke said. "It's got to be on him, and he knows that. He understands that, and he's playing very well." Malkin will look to keep surging ahead when Ray Emery and the streaking Chicago Blackhawks visit Tuesday. The Blackhawks have won a season-best five in a row and improved to 9-1-1 in their last 11 to take over the NHL's points lead. They can thank Emery for their recent surge, who has been in net for every contest during their streak. Emery has fared well versus Pittsburgh, posting an 8-4-2 career mark.

                  TV: 7:30 p.m. ET, Versus, TSN2

ABOUT THE BLACKHAWKS (21-8-4): Although Chicago skated away with a 4-2 victory over the Calgary Flames on Sunday, it wasn't without issue. Defenseman Brent Seabrook exited the contest in the first period after being blasted into the glass by former Blackhawk Rene Bourque. On Monday, Bourque was suspended two games by the NHL for the hit. Left wing Patrick Sharp is riding a career nine-game point streak, collecting seven goals and six assists in that span.

ABOUT THE PENGUINS (18-11-4): Although Malkin has been hot, it hasn't translated into wins. The Penguins have won only twice in the five games Crosby has missed. Left wing James Neal extended his point streak to five with a goal and an assist against Buffalo. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury recorded his 200th career win in relatively easy fashion, thanks to the offensive onslaught. He has posted a 3-1-2 career mark with one shutout versus the Blackhawks.

                  OVERTIME:

                  1. Chicago's Joel Quenneville on Sunday became the 10th coach in NHL history to win 600 games. At 600-364-150, Quenneville became the second fastest to reach the milestone - only current Blackhawks senior adviser Scotty Bowman did so at a quicker pace (1,002 games).

                  2. Pittsburgh defenseman Ben Lovejoy returned to practice Monday. Currently nursing a wrist injury, Lovejoy is on target to return after two weeks of being sidelined.

                  PREDICTION: Blackhawks 4, Penguins 3.

Nashville Predators at Washington Capitals (-140, 5.5)

THE STORY: Dale Hunter has done a fine job filling some holes on defense since taking over for Bruce Boudreau behind the Washington Capitals bench. But the former team captain has not been able to coax any more scoring out of a team that on paper boasts some of the best offensive talent in the league. The Capitals have totaled three goals in their last three games and have averaged 2.3 tallies during Hunter’s nine-game tenure. They face a big challenge Tuesday when the surging Nashville Predators visit. The Predators have won five straight - each by one goal - and are coming off a 2-1 shootout victory over St. Louis on Saturday. Pekka Rinne has faced at least 36 shots in each of the last three games and has allowed a total of five goals.

TV: 7 p.m. ET, FS Tennessee (Nashville), CS Washington

ABOUT THE PREDATORS (17-11-4): Rinne got his first shootout win of the season Saturday after facing 40 shots in regulation. He has been in goal for all five wins and has gotten plenty of help from defenseman Shea Weber, who scored the tying and winning goals against Detroit on Thursday and assisted on the lone regulation tally Saturday. Nashville has a busy week with three games in four days, including a trip to Dallas on Friday.

ABOUT THE CAPITALS (16-14-1): A four-game stretch in which Washington totaled 17 goals provided a glimpse of what the team could do and resulted in three wins. But the Capitals could not keep up the pace, falling flat over their last three. Star left wing Alex Ovechkin was held off the score sheet in Saturday’s 2-1 loss at Colorado and has not had a multi-point game since Nov. 4. Alexander Semin recorded the lone tally against the Avalanche, snapping an eight-game goalless drought. Semin does not have a multi-point game since Oct. 18.

                  OVERTIME:

                  1. The Predators took the first meeting 3-1 at Nashville on Nov. 15, scoring all three goals in the final 4:18 of the third period. Washington had taken the previous five in the series.

                  2. Ovechkin has four goals and eight points in six career games against the Predators.

                  3. Rinne made 39 saves in his lone start against Washington.

                  PREDICTION: Predators 3, Capitals 2.

                    Tuesday's Best CBB Bets

College of Charleston Cougars at Louisville Cardinals (-16, 138.5)

Louisville passed another major test over the weekend when it outlasted Memphis 95-87. The fourth-ranked Cardinals have spread the points around as coach Rick Pitino continues to get pieces back from injury to add to his rotation.

Russ Smith led the way with a career-high 24 points Saturday but it was his seven steals that made more impact in Louisville’s pressure defense and transition offense.

The next school to take a crack at the Cardinals in the Yum! Center will be College of Charleston on Tuesday. A perennial contender for the Southern Conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid, the Cougars have won six straight since their lone loss and are averaging nearly 75 points.

They might be a little over their heads here though.

                    PICK: Louisville Cardinals

Eastern Kentucky Colonels at Arkansas Razorbacks (-12.5, 132.5)

Eastern Kentucky has won four consecutive games, including a 59-53 win over Jacksonville State. The Colonels’ top three scorers lived up to that label as Jaron Jones, Eric Stutz and Joshua Jones combined for 48 points and 15-of-26 shooting (58 percent).

Jaron Jones, a senior guard, and Stutz, a freshman forward, haven’t been missing many shots. Jones and Stutz are both hitting 56 percent of their shots, and as a team the Colonels are shooting 44 percent from the field. Junior guard Mike DiNunno is averaging 3.3 assists and chips in with 9.5 points.

That has the Colonels at 4-2 against the spread in the six games that they’ve seen a line.

Razorbacks supporters haven’t been nearly as lucky. Arkansas managed to down Southeast Louisiana 62-55, but the club is 0-3 against the number this season.

                    PICK: Eastern Kentucky Colonels

Eastern Kentucky Colonials at Arkansas Razorbacks (-12.5, 132.5)

THE STORY: Eastern Kentucky has won four consecutive games, including a 59-53 win over Jacksonville State. The Colonels’ top three scorers lived up to that label as Jaron Jones, Eric Stutz and Joshua Jones combined for 48 points and 15-of-26 shooting (58%). Against Southeast Louisiana, Rashad Madden was the only Arkansas player to score in double figures as the freshman had 10 points, but six other players scored at least six points in the Razorbacks’ 62-55 win, which snapped a two-game losing streak.

TV: 8 p.m. ET, no TV

ABOUT EASTERN KENTUCKY (7-5): Jaron Jones, a senior guard, and Stutz, a freshman forward, haven’t been missing many shots. Jones and Stutz are both hitting 56 percent of their shots, and as a team the Colonels are shooting 44 percent from the field. Junior guard Mike DiNunno is averaging 3.3 assists and chips in with 9.5 points.

ABOUT ARKANSAS (6-3): B.J. Young has been one of the country’s best freshmen in 2011. The six-foot-three guard from St. Louis is averaging 15.3 points (seventh in the nation amongst freshmen) and is hitting 51 percent of his field goals (52-of-101) and 47 percent of his 3-point attempts (16-of-34). Another young guard, sophomore Mardracus Wade, has also been great from downtown, hitting 19-of-40 3-point attempts (47%).

                      TIP-INS

                      1. DiNunno has missed just one free throw (27-of-28). He’s shooting 96 percent from the foul line, tops in the Ohio Valley Conference.

                      2. The Razorbacks have won seven consecutive games against Ohio Valley Conference teams, with their last loss coming against Murray State on Christmas day, 2007.

                      3. In the Ohio Valley, Eastern Kentucky is second only to unbeaten Murray State in scoring defense (61.8 points allowed).

College of Charleston Cougars at Louisville Cardinals (-16, 138.5)

THE STORY: Louisville passed another major test over the weekend when it outlasted Memphis 95-87. The Cardinals just opened the KFC Yum! Center last season but have already turned it into a big advantage and have yet to be beaten in the building this season. The next school to take a crack at the Cardinals in the Yum! Center will be College of Charleston on Tuesday. A perennial contender for the Southern Conference’s automatic NCAA Tournament bid, the Cougars have won six straight since their lone loss and are averaging nearly 75 points.

                      TV: 9 p.m. ET, ESPNU

ABOUT CHARLESTON (9-1): The Cougars have already knocked off a pair of major-conference teams in Clemson and Tennessee and are coming off a tough 70-68 victory over in-city rival Charleston Southern on Saturday. Forward Antwaine Wiggins grabbed a loose ball and dunked with 11 seconds left to provide the winning margin. Wiggins leads the team in scoring (18.1) and ranks second in rebounding (7.0), and has reached 20 points five times in the early going.

ABOUT LOUISVILLE (10-0): The Cardinals added to their stable of talent Saturday when freshman Kevin Ware made his debut. Rakeem Buckles continues to work his way back into shape following a knee injury. Mike Marra is out for the year and Stephan Van Treese remains sidelined, but Pitino has enough to trot out a nine-man rotation and maintain an up-tempo pace. Seven players reached double figures for Louisville on Saturday, with Gorgui Dieng contributing 14 points, 14 rebounds and six blocks as the team’s most reliable inside force.

                      TIP-INS:

                      1. Louisville is off to its first 10-0 start since the 1996-97 season.

                      2. The Cardinals have won 18 straight at the KFC Yum! Center.

                      3. The Cougars are off the fourth-best start in program history.
