Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Risen Star Stakes at Fair Grounds

The Louisiana Derby trail makes its third of four stops in Saturday’s Grade 2 $500,000 Risen Star Stakes. Named for New Orleans’ 1988 Preakness and Belmont winner Risen Star, this 1-1/8 miles contest has been dynamic in producing recent impact on the Triple Crown series. It’s the first 50-points-to-the-winner prep for this year’s Kentucky Derby and likely to produce multiple starters on the first Saturday in May.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Risen Star Stakes (Race 12):

#1-UNIVERSE: Blinkers go on this Smarty Jones Stakes disappointing who looks to recapture juvenile form that saw his place 3 times in graded stakes in New York and Kentucky. Trainer Kenny McPeek turns back to his Global Campaign colt’s initial rider, Christopher Elliott, in looking to snap a 4-race losing streak. McPeek’s Risen Star Stakes win came with Repent during the 2002 season.

#2-GOLDEN TEMPO: The Lecomte Stakes winner is unbeaten in 2 starts and can cement himself as the top local sophomore with a third win at the meeting. Cherie DeVaux trains the Phipps home-bred by Curlin. Regular rider Jose Ortiz will be aboard once again as Golden Tempo looks to become the first Lecomte-Risen Star winner since International Star in 2015.

#3-CARSON STREET: Lecomte Stakes third-place finisher was under the radar that day at 15-1 odds in his stakes debut. The Brendan Walsh-trained son of 2007 Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense has been effective on any footing. Jockey Ben Curtis returns to the saddle.

#4-PALADIN: The Remsen winner is 2-for-2 and could rise to the Kentucky Derby favorite with a score, given the recent injury to Ted Noffey, return loss by Cannoneer and rousing win last week by his Remsen pursuer Renegade at Tampa. Trainer Chad Brown won this race 2 years ago with another Gun Runner colt coming out of the Remsen, Sierra Leone. Tyler Gaffalione takes the mount from Flavien Prat, who will be in Saudi Arabia.

#5-CHIP HONCHO: Trainer Steve Asmussen pulled a 43-1 upset of this race last year with Magnitude for a race record fourth victory in the Risen Star. Chip Honcho also knows his way around Fair Grounds, winning the Gun Runner Stakes before a fourth-place effort in the Lecomte. He’ll remove blinkers and get a rider switch to Luis Saez as Paco Lopez will be riding in Saudi Arabia.

#6-COLT FORTY SEVEN: Trainer Keith Desormeaux shocked the 2013 Risen Star with Ive Struck a Nerve at 135-1 odds when he beat eventual Preakness winner Oxbow and eventual Belmont winner Palace Malice. This 2-for-8 colt will be huge odds as well while making his first stakes bid and formerly running as low as $30,000 claiming.

#7-COURTING: $5 million Curlin colt is full-brother to star mare Clairiere and exits a fourth-place finish behind Paladin in the Remsen Stakes. Blinkers go on this 1-for-3 runner who makes his first start outside Aqueduct. Todd Pletcher has trained 3 Risen Star winners (2010, 2012, 2014) and his 2026 hand includes recent Holy Bull winner Nearly and Sam F. Davis winner Renegade.

#8-QUALITY MISCHIEF: Fourth in the Gun Runner and fifth in the Lecomte, this Into Mischief colt continues throughout the local trail. Trainer Brad Cox’s Risen Star successes include 2020, 2021 and 2023 – featuring eventual Kentucky Derby winner (via DQ) Mandaloun in the middle. Cox’s class of 2026 so far includes Mucho Macho Man winner Commandment and Jerome winner My World. Florent Geroux returns from Southern California, where last Saturday he won the Robert B. Lewis Stakes aboard Bob Baffert’s Plutarch.

Race of the Week: Saturday's Royal Delta at Gulfstream

The Lead:
Trainer Brian Lynch looks to continue to shred the competition during the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet when he sends out the headliner in the Race 11 Royal Delta Stakes. The intriguing mix has a few rising stars, the race's defending champion, a Kentucky Oaks runner-up and a west coast export. The 1-1/16 miles test for fillies and mares is named for the 2-time Breeders' Cup Distaff winner Royal Delta, who had a win and a second in this race when it was previously named the Sabin Stakes.

Saturday's Royal Delta will be part of the Sunset 6 wager between Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita (final 3 races at each track daily). Note the Sunset 6 has a $33K carryover heading into Friday's card. And for those looking ahead, Gulfstream will offer a mandatory Rainbow 6 payout on Sunday to close out the weekend.

Field Depth:
Grade 2 winner NOTHING LIKE YOU is joined by Grade 3 winners ALPINE PRINCESS, SHRED THE GNAR and DAZZLING MOVE. DREXEL HILL is Grade 1-placed.

Pace:
SHRED THE GNAR has wired 3 straight fields and figures to make the front once again. The pressure doesn't look overwhelming and it's likely this race is controlled on or near the front with a short run to the first turn and sixteenth-pole finish line in play.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-ALPINE PRINCESS: Consistent and well-placed 2025 season was capped with career-best in Grade 2 Falls City. Not a blazer, but should be able to hold position with advantageous rail draw. First start at Gulfstream so note an average 13% win rate for sire Classic Empire offspring over the surface. Corey Lanerie won this race in 2021 with Queen Nekia and replaces Irad Ortiz Jr., who will be overseas for the Saudi Cup.

#2-SENZA PAROLE (pictured): Blowout local allowance winner January 15 has hinted at future stardom a few times now in a stop-and-start career. Typical bullet worker came out of that win with her customary morning zip as the Chad Brown trainee looks to navigate 2 turns for the first time. Gun Runner filly bred to handle it and benefits from the sixteenth-pole finish line at this trip. Expect inside speed under Miguel Vasquez, another deputy for the traveling Irad Ortiz Jr.

#3-EUNOMIA: First of 3 Saffie Joseph Jr. trainees in the lineup as he aims for a third straight score in this race and fifth in the last 7 years. Stakes debut for this Tiz the Law filly who has battled in turf and dirt allowance tests for the bulk of her 11 starts. Edwin Gonzalez rides the Keeneland and Tampa winner who aims for a third straight score. Bullet works of late at Palm Meadows as she tries Gulfstream for the first time (sire Tiz the Law 14% local winners). A cut below these unleash she’s vastly improved.

#4-SHRED THE GNAR: Rising star announced her presence here last winter when blowing away maidens in March. She added a Derby Week allowance romp at Churchill before going to the sides and returned in November to win the Grade 3 Chilukki at CD by daylight. Trainer Brian Lynch has a meet-best 7 stakes wins at the current Championship Meet and is winning everything in sight. Into Mischief filly has won around 1 turn and 2 and figures to be a major threat up front throughout the Royal Delta. Mario Gutierrez (13-for-25 with Lynch at GP!) replaces Luis Saez, who will be at Fair Grounds on Saturday.

#5-DAZZLING MOVE: Defending Royal Delta heroine will try to keep Saffie Joseph Jr. rolling in a race he’s won 4 times in the last 6 years. Since its 1991 debut, only Awesome Maria in 2011-’12 has managed repeat victories in this race. She’s lost 8 straight since her Royal Delta score and her 2 starts at the current meet don’t inspire a turnaround. Tyler Gaffalione takes over for traveling John Velazquez.

#6-NOTHING LIKE YOU: Former Bob Baffert trainee went through the sales ring in November and brought back to training instead of embarking on a broodmare career just yet. New connections sent her to Brendan Walsh and he’s had the 2024 Santa Anita Oaks winner training right on cute at Palm Meadows, capped by a bullet work Feb. 4. She was a cut below the good ones at age 4 and I’ll make her prove it to me at Gulfstream for the first time. Malibu Moon offspring win 13% at Gulfstream on dirt.

#7-DREXEL HILL: The 2025 Kentucky Oaks runner-up missed most of the second half of her sophomore season. The Whit Beckman trainee returned on par where she left, but will need a move forward off her listed Wayward Lass score last month at Tampa Bay Downs to best some of these. Jockey Javier Castellano has 3 wins in the Royal Delta (2007, 2008, 2014) and can match John Velazquez’s race record of 4 if successful Saturday.

#8-CLARET BERET: Final of 3 entrants for trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., who bids to surpass Todd Pletcher and become the first 5-time winner of the Royal Delta. This primarily sprinter did win a 2-turn allowance at Oaklawn against entry-level rivals a year ago. The wide draw and immediate left-hand turn at this 1-1/16 miles trip can be confounding for a sprinter. She’s run well to be third in the Rampart and Inside Information this meet and a third minor check might be her ceiling.

Most Likely Exotics Contender:
SHRED THE GNAR is a neck from perfection in 4 starts and has separate wins over the track and at the distance.

Best Longshot Contender:
None projected in the exacta, but DREXEL HILL at 20-1 morning line has been first or second 7 times in 10 starts and her ceiling isn't as well-known as some of these.

Scott Shapiro: Fair Grounds' Risen Star Day Hit & Split Late Pick 4 | Saturday, February 14, 2026

February is full of promotions at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet, including $2M rewards points Hit & Split opportunities on Saturday afternoons. This week we head to New Orleans for one of the biggest days on the racing calendar at Fair Grounds. The Risen Star (G2) headlines a 12-race card that includes an all-stakes Late Pick 4 sequence that kicks off at 5PM eastern/4PM local time and concludes with the Kentucky Derby qualifier. Finding ways to separate from the public appears a challenge, but here is how I will approach things.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.


Race 9: Mineshaft (G3)
Grade: B
Main Ticket: 4 Moonlight; 3 Cadet Corps; 7 Stowaway
Backups: None

Forecast: It could get chalky late, so I will take a swing against the two runners likely to be used most to kick things off. #6 Hit Show is the class of the field and will take some beating, but lacks early speed and might prefer going a touch longer at this point in his career. He is almost certain to be used far more frequently than any other runner. I also am willing to fade Louisiana (G3) winner #2 Accelerize. The son of Omaha Beach took advantage of a favorable voyage over the inside part of the track last month and will be a much shorter price on Saturday. #4 Moonlight is the one I like most, but will use three horses equally. Moonlight did not have things his way in the Louisiana and has had an “in and out” pattern of late. He could be set for his best with Jose Ortiz staying onboard. Gaining separation in this $250,000 event over the main track seems like a must.


Race 10: Fair Grounds (G3)
Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 7 Kupuna; 2 Brilliant Berti
Backups: 6 Montador

Forecast: I had a more difficult time getting creative in the lone turf race in the sequence. #7 Kupuna has been finishing his races strong since arriving in New Orleans. A repeat of his last will make him tough, but #2 Brilliant Berti is impossible for me to not include. He may not be cranked off the bench, but draws inside and has kept the best company. A strong 5YO campaign seems well within the range of outcomes for this Cherie DeVaux trainee. A win off the four-month break at 9-furlongs would only add to my confidence.


Race 11: Rachel Alexandra (G2)
Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 3 Bella Ballerina
Backups: None

Forecast: I have no interest in trying to beat 2-1-ML favorite #3 Bella Ballerina in her first start as a 3YO. The younger sister to champion filly Pretty Mischievous won going away on debut and then held on late when being forced to make first run at a runaway speed in the Golden Rod (G2) to end her 2YO season. The Brendan Walsh trainee has prepared forwardly over this surface and meets a field she should handle to kick off her 2026 season.


Race 12: Risen Star (G2)
Grade: X
Main Ticket: 4 Paladin
Backups: 5 Chip Honcho

Forecast: #4 Paladin enters his first start as a 3YO as one of the favorites to win the Kentucky Derby based on his two races as a juvenile. The Chad Brown trainee’s performances were both flattered by Renegade’s impressive win in the Sam F. Davis last month and he meets a lackluster group all things considered. Paladin is unlikely to be a good bet at his likely off-odds despite being by far the likeliest winner, so if you are committed to trying to beat him on Saturday, #5 Chip Honcho makes the most sense to me. He showed grit to win a subpar edition of the Gun Runner before being caught wide after a slow break in the Lecomte (G3). Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen takes the blinkers off this Connect colt and turns to Luis Saez. An improved effort is expected, but one that is unlikely to be beat Paladin’s “B+” game.

Scott Shapiro: Risen Star, Saudi Derby, Sunland Derby Picks | Feb. 14-15, 2026

In addition to the Late Pick 4 Hit & Split promotion at Fair Grounds on Saturday, there are a trio of Triple Crown Prep Race Money Back Special opportunities over the course of the mid-February weekend. The Saudi Derby and Risen Star on Saturday and Sunland Derby on Sunday all reward points on the Kentucky Derby leaderboard to the top five finishers with the Risen Star being the first of the 50-point to the winner races in 2026. Here are my thoughts.

Saudi Cup (G3):
Four North American-based runners made the trip overseas for this one-turn mile event over the main track, including 5-2-ML favorite #6 My World. The son of Essential Quality beat a suspect group in the Jerome to kick off his 3YO season for trainer Brad Cox running his winning streak to three races, but has done little to wow. I will use my first Money Back opportunity to take a swing against My World with #1 Acknowledgemeplz. The son of Bucchero has just one win in four starts for trainer Doug O’Neill, but ran better than looks in the San Vicente (G2) at Santa Anita Park last out when racing against the flow going 7-furlongs. This barn has been going well to start 2026 and attracts Flavien Prat for their ridgling’s first international test. The price should be right to take a shot.

Play: #1 Acknowledgemeplz (10-1 ML)


Risen Star (G2):
Before last year this 1 1/8-mile test at Fair Grounds had arguably been the best Triple Crown prep despite being run in mid-February. Epicenter in 2022, Angel of Empire in 2023, and Sierra Leone two years ago all made their presence felt in a big way on the first Saturday in May. Perhaps, the race will produce a top contender again this year, but the depth of the field pales in comparison to years’ past.

#3 Golden Tempo returns to the scene of his off-the-pace win in the Lecomte (G3) and will take his share of public support, but it is no doubt #4 Paladin’s race to lose. The $1.9M FTS August 2024 purchase has done little wrong through two starts and was flattered by Renegade’s win in the Sam F. Davis last weekend. He is by far the likeliest winner, but with the insurance from the Money Back offer I will opt to instead wager on #5 Chip Honcho. The son of Connect showed grit to win the Gun Runner in December before being caught wide throughout after a less-than-ideal break in the Lecomte. Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen takes the blinkers off and legs up Luis Saez for the first time. I am not sure whether Chip Honcho is good enough to beat the chalk, but he has the recency and will be a much bigger price on Saturday evening.

Play: #5 Chip Honcho (6-1 ML)


Sunland Derby:
The final Triple Crown prep of the weekend goes as the ninth of ten on Sunday afternoon in New Mexico where Springboard Mile winner #1 Express Kid was made the 3-1-ML favorite. The son of Bodemeister was sold after the win for $800,000 in a one-horse flash sale on Fasig-Tipton Digital and now appears in the Justin Evans barn. The Cal-bred was impressive in his first dirt route try, but is likely to have things tough on the front end given the speed to drawn to his outside. Therefore, I will try another O’Neill runner at a price in #3 Pavlovian. The Pavel colt is just 1 for 8, but came with a strong late run after another poor start in the Cal Cup Derby month. If he can avoid spotting the field too many lengths early, he has a shot to make the last move at a price under veteran Edwin Maldonado.

1st race – (3) I Love Giraffes is an interesting first-time starter who put in a couple of bullet works for this. (2) R P Byrne disappointed in her debut. Can rebound here. (1) Pearl of Pearl missed by a neck on Tapeta. May like turf, too. (4) Delightful Darling should be in the mix with this bunch. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-4. Doubles: 1-2-3-4 with 4-5-7-8.

2nd race – (5) River of Time may appreciate the stretchout. (7) Warrior Wayne may perk up on Tapeta. (8) Wannabeeloved was a close third in his last try on Tapeta. (4) Internal Capital could be a factor on his best try. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-7-8.

7th race – (3) Back Em Up was second to a buzzsaw last time and finds a field he can handle. (6) Grande was second in the Wood Memorial. Will be a main threat if there’s no rust. (8) Praetor could also be a contender despite a layoff. (2) Unclecharliesgift will appreciate a return to dirt. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8.

9th race – (9) Let’s Dance Againdrops in class and looks best here. (1) Chloe’s Toy comes off a win and will be a danger from the rail. (2) Plum Irish steps up while seeking a third straight win. (4) Omo Ten Girl cannot be ignored in this field. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-9.

11th race – (4) Shred the Gnar has a ton of speed and could lead throughout. (1) Alpine Princess looks like the one to fear. (2) Senza Parole seems like she’s ready for a big effort. (8) Claret Beret should make her presence felt here. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-8.

2^nd race [NY, East View, 7F] – (5) Blue Note (A/C) was a rare debut winner for Linda Rice whose horses usually take a step forward in their second starts and was bet down from 7-2 to be the 2-1 favorite. (4) Galinda was a first out winner as the favorite against a field of 10 with a front-end effort. (1) Pinky Brier won 3 out of her 4 most recent starts in a maiden claimer where she was taken by Brad Cox, a starter allowance, and a NY-bred allowance. (2) Victory Hall was last seen in November winning a stakes at Finger Lakes against open company and had an allowance victory at Delaware Park.

5^th race [Clm 20000 N2L, 6F] – (2) Purple and Gold (B) set the pace on the inside on a dead rail at 2-5 and folded but got claimed for $20,000. (7) Mo Attitude pressed the pace last month in his first run at Aqueduct and finished third. (5) La Gran Artesana has shown plenty of speed and that has been a big advantage the past couple of weeks and drops down to her lowest level. (6) Syl’s Pleasure ran evenly in a similar spot in his first start against winners.

6^th race [Clm 10000, 6 ? F] – (5) Leading Role got his second win for a $17,500 tag with a front-end trip and last month pressed the pace, got to the lead, and was third for $12,500. (2) Divine Leader finished third for $16,000 with the waiver in his second start after a layoff. (3) Brew Pub was claimed for $25,000 in November and ran well at that level four times and now drops to this low level as an 8-year-old. (1) Glint was a winner for $10,000 on the last day of 2025 and then was fourth for $20,000 in January.

10^th race [NY, Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (1) Hurricane Kaz (C) was bet down from 17-1 to 13-1, raced with Lasix for the first time, set the pace, and finished second beaten by only a half-length. (7) Pride of the Union had a second and a third at Aqueduct as a 2-year-old after pressing the pace and now gets Lasix. (2) Mach Sevenpressed the pace in his debut at 7-1 in a good field at Gulfstream Park. (4) Prospector also comes up from Florida to face NY-breds after two races for Saffie Joseph.

Best bets: Purple and Gold (5^th); Leading Role (6^th). Best Value: Blue Note (2^nd); Hurricane Kaz (10^th).

Keeneland Select Derby Prep - Risen Star | February 14, 2026

The $500,000 Risen Star Stakes (G2), Fair Grounds, Race 12

(4) Paladin ended 2025 with an impressive win in the Remsen, despite being bumped at the start. Is following the same Remsen-Risen Star route as Sierra Leone for trainer Chad Brown and gets the call here. (2) Golden Tempo rallied from 10^th to win the Lecomte here. Should welcome the added distance and be the main competition. (8) Quality Mischief was hurt by a wide trip when fifth in the Lecomte and gets a positive rider switch. (5) Chip Honcho broke slowly and raced wide in the Lecomte. Should get a better trip here. Betting strategy: 4 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 2-4-5-8.

Winning contenders are: Golden Tempo (2), Paladin (4), and Carson Street (3)

Analysis and Contenders:

Win contenders and analysis:

Golden Tempo (2) and Paladin (4)are the only recent stakes winners. I think Golden Tempo will likely be a better value as a win bet, whereas Paladin is likely to be the public favorite. Golden Tempo won both his races, including the Lecomte Stakes(January 17). In both races, Golden Tempo started in 10^th, rallied to fourth at the eighth pole, and in the Lecomte,he inhaled past the three horses in front of him, earning an 85 Equibase Speed Figure. Golden Tempo won the Lecomte this year and can win the Risen Star, as horses from the Lecomte running in the Risen Star have won in 2025, 2022, 2021, 2020 (there were two divisions), and 2019.

Paladin (4) won both his races, although in his first career start, he actually finished second but was awarded the win when the first-place finisher was disqualified. In his second race, the Remsen Stakes on December 6, Paladin won, earning a 96 figure. Finishing second in the Remsen was Renegade, who was the disqualified winner of Paladin’sdebut. Last weekend, Renegade improved and won the Sam F. Davis Stakes. However, among the last 10 Remsen winners, only Dornoch (the Fountain of Youth Stakes) and Sierra Leone have won twice in their three-year debut races, with Sierra Leone winning the 2024 Risen Stakes and being trained by Chad Brown, who is also training Paladin. So, with Paladin running after winning in December and Golden Tempowinning in January, I am taking Paladin for my win bet, but I will use both in exactas.

Carson Street (3) has improved over his last two races, winning at Fair Grounds on December 4, earning an 80 figure, then earning an 84 in the Lecomte. He should improve again today, and if his odds are nearly the 15 to 1, he was in the Lecomte, he could be a good win wager and should also be used in exactas and trifectas.
