Jeremy Plonk: Parx Bet $100, Get $10 Promo Picks for Tuesday

    by Jeremy Plonk

The “Love at First Bet” promotion this February at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet offers a $10 bonus when you bet $100 or more at select tracks each Tuesday and Thursday. Parx will be the track spotlighted for this Tuesday. Here’s how I’ll approach with the help of the Betmix Angler database.

    Parx: Race 4

#1 Heat Alert (7-2 morning line odds) goes for a Mike Pino barn that’s been dynamite the past month at Parx. He’s 19: 7-2-1 during that span and takes this 5-year-old first time off the claim. Heat Alert was clearly second-best to a runaway winner in similar company Jan. 12 and benefits from the rail draw around 2 turns. Win bet #1. Daily Double 1-6 to Pino’s favorite in the next race.

    Parx: Race 8

#4 Diamond Heist (6-1 morning line odds) could keep the trainer Mike Pino express rolling. This gelding won back-to-back while being claimed in his last 2 and now debuts for the circuit’s hottest barn. Pino and Mychel Sanchez hit 38% together at Parx and are 5-12 the past month (42%). Win-place bet #4.

      BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

      Fair Grounds - Race #7
#4 Pure Joy She took a lot of cash when a mild third at 6/5 in the debut run, but she brings some obvious upside to this second start and may still be pretty well meant.
#5 Abilene She moved nicely before flattening out here last month, but she has a similar kind of profile to the top choice and brings similar appeal.
#2 Love and Trust She has a tactical edge on most of the logical players on paper while moving around two turns, and she looked like a horse who might move forward from the debut when she just flattened out late. Lots to like.
Race Summary Think this is a fun race -- haven't even mentioned the capable rail runner or the Brad Cox second-timer. Trust your gut and take your pick.
      Fair Grounds - Race #8
#6 Shining Star Tons of respect for the next one, but both turf sprints here have been excellent, easy wins by the kind of margin you don't see a whole lot on the lawn. Major class test today, but I bet she aces it.
#7 Lotsandlotsofcandy I think you can make a case for a few of them in here, but she's dangerous if she's able to handle the new footing. She owns the best pace of the bunch and should control this group to the top of the stretch.
#5 Civetta Handful of pretty nice names on her page, so I wonder if she's capable of a share (or better if the top two go at it) at an OK price while bouncing back off a flat run at Turfway last out.
Race Summary Shining Star and Lotsandlotsofcandy aren't anything clever in here, but I think the former deserves the nod while stepping up with a couple of very appealing sprints on her page.
      Fair Grounds - Race #9
#7 A G's Charlie He was a distant second two starts back, but something like that might play OK here if he's able to run to it. Capable of better than the route dud, and the price might be pretty fun.
#5 I Got the Hint Riser has a big claim on this for the new team after a couple of nice, pressing runs at the $20,000 level. He checks a lot of the boxes for this kind of barn, but you're probably not getting too appealing a price while trying a deeper group with some fresh faces.
#3 My Touch Take a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this, as he's a new face in a race without a ton of compelling form.
Race Summary Would also want #1 Bad Joke on the plays as potential rail speed, but I think A G's Charlie has some price appeal while cutting back. He's bred to be better, so I'll chase a little bit while the prices are still fun in hopes he starts to put things together.

        FRANK CARULLI'S DAILY PICKS

        Turf Paradise - Race #4
#3 BIG PRODUCER (4-1) Solid numbers, drops below claim level in field of unproven long sprinters.
#7 STANDARD OF PROOF (2-1) In top form, upgraded in-the-money finishes with winning rally at 1M.
#5 MOONLIGHT ROAD (5-2) Beaten favorite in three consecutive starts at Turf Paradise.
Race Summary BIG PRODUCER worked fast for his Turf Paradise audition but he broke slowly and spotted the field 11 lengths after a half mile. He made up some ground with the help of a torrid pace, but he should contend on the class drop with an extra half-furlong to travel. Bet to win and place and play 3-5 and 3-7 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #5
#2 BEYOND THE LAW (8-1) Better than last pair indicate, worth a longshot stab at early 8-1 odds.
#4 BEHIND THE BAR (7-2) Costly start, 5-wide rally was too late as the 3-to-5 choice.
#1 CORACORACORA (3-1) Blew clear stretch lead after a year on the sidelines and was claimed.
Race Summary BEYOND THE LAW tried to regroup after she checked back into the turn, to no avail. She broke her maiden at this level three starts back but was no match on the class hike against the likes of Curlin’s Lil Gal (16/4-4-4, $80k). Bet to win and place and play 2-1 and 2-4 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #7
#6 TOOLITTLETOOLATE (15-1) Longshot stab with speed and good recent form.
#3 SUMMER LOVER (5-2) Late runner overpowered foes at this level, must unwind sooner at one mile.
#8 STRADIVARIAN (5-1) Got the jump on ‘Summer’ but drifting out proved costly.
Race Summary TOOLITTLETOOLATE could have distance and turf limitations, but he’s 6-for-25 overall, in top form since entering this barn in November and worked in :59-3/5 over the main track since his last start. Bet to win and place and play a 3-6-8 exacta box.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #1 - Post: 12:15pm - Claiming -6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,200 Class Rating: 70

              Rating:

              #5 BECK'S SPIRIT (ML=5/1)

BECK'S SPIRIT - Faced tougher in the last race at Turfway Park. Based on class figures, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this one on my list of top contenders.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #4 CACIQUE ABARRIO (ML=5/2), #2 MEADOW VALUE (ML=3/1), #6 A LA CARTE (ML=7/2),

CACIQUE ABARRIO - You should normally bet against favorites that haven't raced or show no activity in the morning over the last few weeks. MEADOW VALUE - The speed figures continue to descend, 71/30/20. Not a good omen. A LA CARTE - This sustainer will probably be rolling down the lane much too late to make an impression in this event. I can't play this frequent non-winner. Gets the job completed once in a while. The speed rating in the last race doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's contest. Mark this horse as a likely underpriced contender.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #5 BECK'S SPIRIT on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds

MARDI GRAS S. - FOR FILLIES AND MARES FOUR YEARS OLD AND UPWARD.
                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 5 CIVETTA 6/1
                # 6 SHINING STAR (CHI) 5/2
                # 1 BIG TROUBLE 9/2
I've got to go with CIVETTA. Jockey's recent return on investment numbers make this filly a good bet. Has been travelling admirably in races of this distance, going 3 for 8 under similar conditions. I would have to consider this filly on the jockey and conditioner numbers alone. SHINING STAR (CHI) - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Cox have shown strong results lately. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (95 average) at today's distance and surface recently. BIG TROUBLE - With a reliable 93 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. Very strong pick to take this race going in a turf sprint.

                  Parx Racing - Race #5 - Post: 1:53pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 49

                  Rating:

                  #10 CRAVING CARBS (ML=6/1)
                  #6 SAMANTHA'S CAPO (ML=2/1)

CRAVING CARBS - Kulp is sharp with any fine animal racing 1st time after a claim. The trainer is very good with those types. Kulp drops her down to this level. You don't need too much more from the pp lines to believe this horse has a good chance at this level. Gets help from Kulp with the addition of Lasix. The addition of blinks usually means that a trainer wants a racer to show more zip or to keep her attention focused. SAMANTHA'S CAPO - Last raced at Parx Racing in a race with a class number of 54. Dropping a significant amount in class figure this time around puts her in a solid position in today's race. Is ranked totally number one in the field in EPS (earnings per start). A dominant performance in this race can augment that total. Lasix can take some getting used to, especially for a filly. They usually hit stride the 2nd time using it, like we have with this horse.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #9 ROSIE OUTLOOK (ML=7/2), #2 SHAUNNASAPRILFOOL (ML=6/1), #1 BREEZE ALONG BELLE (ML=8/1),

ROSIE OUTLOOK - Don't believe this horse has what it takes to cross the finish line in first in today's event. SHAUNNASAPRILFOOL - The extended layoff since November 5th is somewhat discouraging. BREEZE ALONG BELLE - Doubtful for this horse to make an impact with no recent good showings in a sprint affair.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #10 CRAVING CARBS on the nose if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

                    # 1 THIRSTY VISION 4/1
                    # 6 BOB'S DECISION 5/1
NO ORDINARY TIGER is the strongest wager in this race. Ought to be given a shot here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone. Will probably be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the halfway point of the contest. Is a sharp contender based on figs garnered recently under today's conditions. THIRSTY VISION - Solid average speed figures in turf route races make this racer a solid choice. Ran a strong last race.

BOUNDING DELIGHT is the most solid wager in this race. Cannot put a finger on it, but like this gelding for a wager. The knowledge group knows that speed is King in harness racing. This horse will unlock our way to a nice win. When the trainer Kreiser puts Merriman up for the drive very nice things happen. Take a look at the 32 win percent. RODEO JET - Has very good speed ratings and surely has to be thought of for a wager for this one. STORM AHEAD - The trainer Umholtz has a knack with this gelding, regularly cashing in their contests. With a magnificent driver, who has won at a good 21 percent rate the past month, this has to be one of the best selections.

SECRET OR NOT will have you running to the cashier's window in this race. Worth looking at here on the basis of the ratings in the speed rating department alone. Seems to have a great class advantage based on the competitors he has faced. With this driver-trainer hooking up, investors often make some green stuff. Return on investment is great with this duo. LONG DAN - The number crunching team noted a bang-up showing out of this standardbred last time. Looking for a repeat effort of that to end up in the winner's circle. Some trainers just fit better with certain harness racers. That seems to be the case today with Dubois. A great bet. GIMLET HANOVER - Take a look at this harness racer's avg speed number of 79 and compare to today's class rating. Looks like a really good wager. He has respectable class ratings, averaging 81. Worth considering for a bet here.
