Meet the Contenders: Turfway's John Battaglia Memorial Stakes

The lone domestic Kentucky Derby qualifying points available this week come at Turfway Park, where Saturday's John Battaglia Memorial Stakes serves as the local prep to the Jeff Ruby. The $175,000 event at 1-1/16 miles on the Tapeta synthetic surface has attracted an overflow field in the entry box.

Let’s meet the contenders for the John Battaglia Memorial (Race 9):

#1-STREET BEAST: Likely favorite wired the Leonatus Stakes in his local unveiling Jan. 17 and followed up a strong freshman season in which he won the Kentucky Downs Juvenile Mile and finished fourth in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. Ben Colebrook trains the son of Kentucky Derby winner Street Sense and local ace Luan Machado has the return mount.

#2-STEEL IMPERIUM: Romped in a Feb. 7 local debut sprint by 4 lengths while rallying last to first and circling the field. Caio Caramori steps this Essential Quality colt up in class immediately. With a $510,000 price tag, there’s a ton of turf distance stamina on the bottom of his pedigree.

#3-MAXIMUS PRIME: 7-race maiden was runner-up last spring in the Kentucky Juvenile at Churchill Downs. Exits a third-place local maiden mile try with the addition of Lasix, but the Maximus Mischief colt won’t have Lasix in this stakes for trainer Anthony Mitchell.

#4-KILO TANGO: Rallying, 1-mile maiden breaker Jan. 3 at Turfway in his third lifetime start for trainer Brad Cox. This $575,000 Candy Ride colt was third on the Churchill turf prior. Jockey Luan Machado hops seats to ride Street Beast in the Battaglia, leaving the mount to Fernando de la Cruz. Dam Up In Smoke was a stakes-winning dirt sprinter.

#5-BAYTOWN DREAMER: Busy colt makes his third prep start of 2006 after a third in the Smarty Jones and 11th In the Southwest, both at Oaklawn. Would be returning on 15 days’ rest while looking to snap a 6-race losing streak. Turfway debut for this Paul McEntee trainee who has been based here all winter.

#6-TIME FOR MONEY: First-time gelding finished a late-running fourth in a Turfway mile allowance Dec. 27 and makes his first appearance since. Not This Time colt for trainer John Ennis has won 1 of 5, breaking his maiden on turf at Churchill in October. Ennis finished second in this race in 2024 with eventual Kentucky Derby starter Epic Ride.

#7-ATTFIELD: Tom Morley brings this one from his Belmont Park training base and tries synthetic for the first time. Vekoma colt won 2 of 3 last season, including the Central Park at 1-1/16 miles on grass at Aqueduct. Ricardo Santana Jr. keeps the mount with the change of venue and this one figures to view for favoritism.

#8-GREAT WHITE: John Ennis stablemate of Time For Money gives the barn two shots Saturday. Dec. 12 debut winner ran an even fifth in the Leonatus Stakes and must improve just under 5 lengths vs. Street Beast in the rematch. Troubled trip last out could give the Volatile gelding reason under return river Alex Achard.

#9-STOP THE CAR: Opened career 2-for-2 with Keeneland and Churchill victories before disappointing seventh-place effort in the Lecomte at Fair Grounds at 9-2 odds. Lecomte alumni returned to finish second and third in last weeks’ Risen Star in New Orleans. Brendan Walsh trainee by Maximum Security has yet to try anything but dirt to date. Edgar Morales rides for the first time.

#10-ACES HONOR: Ethan West charge has posted back-to-back wins, including the Texas Turf Mile at Sam Houston on Jan. 24. The Code of Honor colt is 2-for-4 overall and will be ridden by Victor Carrasco for the first time. West barn developed last year’s Kentucky Derby performer Chunk of Gold after wintering at Turfway and looks for a follow-up success.

#11-FULLEFFORT: Runner-up as the favorite in the Leonatus Stakes seeks rematch revenge on Street Beast in the Battaglia. Joins Kilo Tango in the lineup for trainer Brad Cox. This $425,000 son of Liam’s Map won Kentucky Downs and Keeneland turf tests to wrap a 2-for-2 first season. He hits the Battaglia in a favorable, second-off-the-layoff form cycle. Vince Cheminaud has the return call.

#12-TWO OUT HERO: Canadian stakes winner makes his 3-year-old debut for leading Woodbine conditioner Kevin Attard. This War Front colt won his debut on Tapeta by 12 lengths and then won the Soaring Free sprinting on turf. He closed his campaign third in September’s Grade 1 Summer by a length. Rafael Hernandez has been aboard in each start and will be once again.

(AE) #13-SMALL TOWN: Jan. 10 debut winner will need a scratch in order to participate. Michael McCarthy trainee won locally over 6 furlongs and would land a tough post for first 2-turn effort. Son of Speightstown has stamina damside of his pedigree.

Race of the Week: Saturday's Gulfstream Park Sprint

The Lead:
Little went as anticipated in last week's Royal Delta at Gulfstream, so we'll look to restore order in this space for Saturday's Gulfstream Park Sprint. With Knightsbridge rolling in the Mr. Prospector and Fred W. Hooper already this Championship Meet, the local dash scene gets a chance for a fresh face in his absence this Saturday.

The Gulfstream Park Sprint will be part of the Sunset 6 wager between Gulfstream Park and Santa Anita (final 3 races at each track daily).

Field Depth:
Grade 2 and Grade 3 winner DAMON'S MOUND has the signature wins in the lineup. ROLANDO and GREAT NAVIGATOR are listed stakes winners. DAMON'S MOUND has the class edge.

Pace:
It's not obvious where the serious gas comes from, but it should be competitive early amongst WOUND UP, DAMON'S MOUND, ROLANDO, AJAAYB and perhaps BEELINE and CON COMPANIA. Hard read on pace.

Our Eyes:
Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-GREAT NAVIGATOR: Consistent sort was no match for a tougher Mr. Prospector cast last out that included Knightsbridge and Super Chow. While he’s only won 2 of his last 11, he never misfires at 6 furlongs and gets back to his preferred trip. Not the fastest sprinter from the gate and needs a clear break or the field will come down and take his real estate.

#2-JACK’S PROMISE: Scored an allowance victory over this track and trip on Christmas Eve and makes his first start since for a Dale Romans barn that is going very well of late at GP. Bullet workout Feb. 8 similar to the zip he showed prior to last win. He’s 2-for-3 at Gulfstream and son of GP successful sprinter Promises Fulfilled. Plenty to like while making his first rise into the stakes ranks.

#3-AJAAYB: Victor Barboza took over the training of this 6-year-old over the winter and didn’t see any noticeable progress when returning him at Tampa for an allowance on Feb. 7. This one has struggled in stakes and has nibbled at Gulfstream with a 7: 0-3-3 mark. Prefer others.

#4-BEELINE: Versatile pace player wired the Hutcheson here 2 years ago, but is 1-for-7 in sporadic appearances since. The Riley Mott trainee turns to Tyler Gaffalione for the first time while looking to a return to his preferred GP surface as the potential wake-up call. Solid marks at 6 furlongs on dirt play to his strength.

#5-WOUND UP: Southern California transplant has battled some tough foes in the Claiming Crown Sprint and Mr. Prospector in recent starts and held his ground nicely. Jose D’Angelo barn has been off its normal success early in 2026 but having Irad Ortiz Jr. back aboard will be a boost. Could show strong early pace just inside the potential pacemaker and favorite, hooking up in a duel.

#6-DAMON’S MOUND: Speedster wire the Sunshine Sprint last out and successfully followed his open-company win in the Grade 3 Bold Ruler at Aqueduct. He’s back in a groove after showing such initial promise to open his career. The 6-year-old is 2-for-2 at Gulfstream and note trainer Bill Mott’s 8: 4-1-0 meet in stakes at the Championship Meet. The horse to beat under regular pilot Junior Alvarado.

#7-ROLANDO: The 2025 Hutcheson Stakes winner over this track and distance, he’s 1-for-6 since and hoping a return to his favorite surface shakes things in the right direction. He’s 3-for-6 at Gulfstream and never missed a trifecta locally. The 4-year-old by Vekoma caught a pretty tough field at Tampa in the Pelican Stakes Feb. 7 and wheels back quickly. His Hutcheson win was on 13 days’ rest, so the pattern entices and John Velazquez has had success with him prior.

#8-CON COMPANIA: Chilean export is 2-for-8 in America while racing for 3 different trainers in Florida. Good effort around 2 turns last time out before succumbing to eventual Pegasus World Cup winner Skippylongstocking et al and should be strong at 6 furlongs. Versatile running style from outside post puts the task in Miguel Vasquez’s hands.

Most Likely Exotics Contender:
DAMON'S MOUND should be in the hunt every step of the way over a track and distance he likes.

Best Longshot Contender:
ROLANDO repeats a successful, short-rest pattern from 2025 and has run well locally and at this trip.

Scott Shapiro: Turfway Park Hit & Split Late Pick 4 | Saturday, February 21, 2026

It is a light week on the Road to the Kentucky Derby leaderboard with Turfway Park taking center stage. The John Battaglia Memorial was made a points race in 2021 and while its winners have yet to make an impression in Triple Crown races, 2022 fourth-place finisher Rich Strike went on to shock the world on the first Saturday in May.

It remains to be seen whether this year’s group can produce a contender in 2026, but it is the race that will play largest in this week’s 1/ST BET and Xpressbet promotions. The featured event is not only part of our “Triple Crown Prep Races Money Back Special” promo, but the late Pick 4 is this week’s sequence in our ongoing 2-Million Point Saturday Hit & Split. As always, just remember to register for both if you have yet to do so. Here is how I plan to approach the late Pick 4 that kicks off at 8:55 eastern.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

Race 7:
Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 1 Princess Julia
Backups: 5 Late Spring Night

Forecast: I landed on the chalk on top in this MSW for 3YO fillies at 5.5-furlongs where #1 Princess Julie appears the clear one to beat. The daughter of Caravaggio has progressed in each of her first three starts for trainer Eric Foster, including a runner-up effort at nearly 25-1 on February 5. She meets a modest group of protected non-winners and should be able to use the inside draw to her advantage. I will throw in long shot #5 Late Spring Night as a backup. The Optimizer filly did little running after breaking slowly from her inside draw on debut. I can forgive the effort given her likely value in the sequence, especially since it has been a good meet for trainer Kevin Fletcher.


Race 8:
Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 6 Lorelei Lee; 7 L’clair; 9 Lotta Alpha
Backups: None

Forecast: The pace should be contentious at the very least in this first-level allowance for 3YO fillies, which should make things difficult for 7-2-second choice #3 Gracie’s Delight. Theoretically, 5-2-morning line favorite #2 Cadenza should get a great pocket trip in her first start of the year for Brad Cox, but might need the race given the gap in her public works from January 2 to February 6. I will try to beat them both. #6 Lorelei Lee is the one I like most, but the public will agree. The Mike Maker trainee won nicely on debut with a favorable flow and has put forth a pair of solid local drills since. I also give #9 Lotta Alpha a shot to win right back and a long shot look to #7 L’clair. The Beau Liam filly draws outside the likely speeds in her first start over this course. She is in with a serious chance at a juicy price if she takes to the surface.


Race 9: John Battaglia Memorial
Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 8 Great White; 4 Kilo Tango
Backups: 10 Aces Honor

Forecast: I will also toss the favorites in the aforementioned feature event at 1 1/16-miles and instead hope to gain separation in the sequence. #8 Great White intrigues me most. Trainer John Ennis rarely wins with first-time starters, yet this son of Volatile overcame a poor start to win going away on debut over this course. He tried two-turns in his next start in the Leonatus and failed to hit the board, but again had issues at the break and chased gate-to-wire winner #1 Street Beast throughout. Great White had plenty left to give after the wire and has a look at a big price if he is able to fix those issues at the break. I will use my Money Back wager on him, but also include #4 Kilo Tango. The “other” Cox came home nicely to get the job done on January 3 and is one of those that would benefit most from a lively early tempo.


Race 10:
Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 4 Pack a Lunch; 10 Scoville
Backups: None

Forecast: I lack creativity in this $7500 maiden claimer to close the card where one of the two favorites is likely to cross the wire first. #4 Pack a Lunch takes a big drop in class for Doug Cowans after disappointing in a $30k event on December 12. He makes the most sense, but #10 Scoville could sneak away. The Get Stormy gelding has had his chances, but his speed eventually will lead him to the winner’s circle for the first time.

4^th race [Clm 20000, 1 1/8 mi] – (1) Confabulation was an open-length winner for $12,500 in January and was claimed. A week ago he was outclassed in a starter allowance. (3) Whiskey N Soda bested a four-horse field for $16,000 and got one of his career best speed figures. (4) Bob John Ray was moved to first by disqualification after setting the pace and finished second in a first-level allowance for NY-breds. (6) Hours in a Day was a winner for $17,500 in September and came back 10 days ago to finish third for the waiver in a $20,000 race.

5^th race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (7) Kaz Brio (B) moved from turf to dirt, broke last, rushed up outside, and ran on for third. (1) Double Act gets blinkers on and first-time Lasix. The $850,000 Saratoga yearling has faced some quality fields and was third in December and twice before that. (6) Pauillac is a $750,000 Gun Runner colt making his first start for Chad Brown after training in Florida since November. (2) Dr. Sinatra had a third and a second showing speed most recently.

6^th race [Alw 83000 N1X, 6F] – (6) Sacrosanct (D) returned from a long layoff and had trouble finding a race due to winter cancellations. (3) Cool Andy won his last two starts for Linda Rice after she claimed him in Kentucky for $50,000 with wins for that price in a claimer and a starter allowance. (2) Yo Banana Boy ran a best speed figure when he won a top-level NY-bred allowance with a front-end effort last month. (5) Funny Uncle won his last two races for a $20,000 tag and a starter allowance.

7^th race [OC 75k/C, 6F] – (3) Irish Maxima returns from an August layoff and two turf stakes starts with four stakes wins in his record including the Distaff (G3) at Aqueduct. (2) Atarah won his three most recent starts with a $50,000 claimer at Churchill Downs where Linda Rice claimed him, a starter allowance and a first-level allowance against open-company. (5) Sweet Brown Sugarhas three wins and two seconds in NY-bred stakes and eight career victories. (4) Reliable Lady was claimed in January by Brad Cox for $75,000.

Best bets: Sacrosanct (6^th); Irish Maxima (7^th). Best Value:Confabulation (4^th); Kaz Brio (5^th).

(12) Two Out Hero won his lone try on Tapeta and is Grade 1-placed on turf. Looks best here. (1) Street Beast won the Leonatus Stakes here in gate-to-wire fashion. Looms the main rival from the rail in a big field. (7) Attfield has done well enough on turf to be a factor here on the all-weather. (11) Fulleffort was the favorite in the Leonatus and rallied for second. Cannot be ignored in this field at a longer distance. Betting strategy: 12 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 1-7-11-12.

Contenders and analysis:

Brad Cox has an uncoupled entry in this year’s John Bagglia Memorial Stakes with Kilo Tango (4) and Fulleffort (11), and I think both are top contenders. I’ll start with Kilo Tango, who won powerfully on January 3, rallying from 11th to win going away. Kilo Tango’s most recent Equibase Speed Figure is 84, up from his second career race of 73, which is up from the 61 he earned in his debut race. This suggests he should improve again. The best figures earned in recent races are 95 for Ace Honor (10) and 96 for Street Beast(1), making Kilo Tango a top contender to win. Jockey Machado moves to run on Street Beast, but De La Cruz, riding Kilo Tango, has won nearly 40% of his mounts for Cox over the past year. Cox won the 2024 John Battaglia Memorial Stakes with Encino, who also won a route race at Turfway Park in his maiden, where Kilo Tango recently won.

Fulleffort (11) finished second in the Leonatus Stakes on January 17, a one-mile race, where he rallied at the end and finished a length behind. The winner of the Leonatus was Street Beast. That was Fulleffort’s first all-weather race, with jockey Cheminaud also making his debut riding Fulleffort. Fulleffort has improved, with figures of 86, 90, and 93 in his three races.

Street Beast (1) won the Leonatus, taking the lead from the wire, and won his first all-weather race after a two-and-a-half-month layoff. His most recent performance on October 31 was a big effort, finishing fourth out of 14 horses in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf. His previous win was the Juvenile Stakes at Kentucky Downs, where he stalked in second from the start before he won powerfully by seven lengths. Although Street Beast has the rail, he can take the lead, but he doesn’t have to. Trainer Colebrook earned a second in this race in 2023 with Scoobie Quando, and the recent winners of the Leonatus in 2025 (Epic Ride) and 2024 (Baby Max) were second in the John Battaglia. History bodes well for Street Beast and Fulleffort in this race.

Two Out Hero (12) finished third in the Grade 1 Summer Stakes on September 12, in a turf route, beaten a length by the winner. He won his only all-weather race by 12 lengths, his career debut, and he won his second start on turf, a stakes, and earned improving figures from 83, 90, and 94. Two Out Hero has been laid off since the fall, but his excellent trainer, Attard, has won numerous all-weather stakes, including taking Caitlinhergrtness in the My Charmer Stakes at Turfway Park in December; his only race as a trainer on this track over the past three years is a stakes race. Jockey Hernandez has been the only jockey to ride for Two Out Hero.

Ace Honor (10) just won the Texas Turf Mile Stakes on January 24, where he earned an excellent 96 figure. He has a lot of early speed, but in his race on December 20, he stalked in third and earned a 98 figure. He has a good chance to place or better.

Street Beast (1) can be considered at odds of 7 to 2 or higher.

6th race – (9) High South rallied late for fourth after a seven-month layoff. Should benefit from that trip and move forward here. (7) North End Lady can make her presence felt in this field. (10) Ivory and Ebony drew a tough post for her turf debut. (2) Starship Melody may fire after a short freshening. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-7-9-10.

8th race – (5) Fancy Gentleman was second in fast time and could control the pace here. (7) Autobahn may like the added distance. (6) Ovechkin could benefit from a turf-to-dirt switch. (3) Infinite Light may improve with blinkers. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-7.

10th race – (6) Damon’s Moundseeks a third straight win and gets the call. (8) Con Compania will be suited by the shorter distance. (5) Wound Up belongs in the exotics. (3) Ajaayb might wake up here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-8.
