    BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

Will Rogers Downs - Race #4
#1 His Way He showed pace and faded a bit late in the debut run, but the rail draw should force his hand toward another similar effort, and I'm hoping he'll be able to stick around better in the lane with that race under his belt.
#6 Cool Okie He was third-best in a very strung-out group last time out, but like the top choice he brings some reasonable upside after that debut run and wouldn't be a surprise.
#4 Uniter He finished way in front of Cool Okie in that last one, but I worry that he's a bit more exposed with the three starts to his name, and he's probably going to take some cash by default here.
Race Summary His Way and Cool Okie have similar profiles while each making their second respective starts off decent forward debut runs. Price might be slightly better on the former?
Will Rogers Downs - Race #5
#5 Sweet Aunt Rosie She woke up in a hurry in that main-track route last out, and something similar to that would probably be enough to keep her in the mix while stepping up to try winners for the first time. Handles these right back.
#6 Sabres The form is all over the place, but she has done all of that work against some tougher groups than she is going to find here and I'm assuming the price will reflect that. Capable.
#2 Flat Out Nancy Her local form has been pretty good, and she has some fairly honest finishing form on her page outside of the Canterbury efforts. Could see it.
Race Summary Sweet Aunt Rosie looked good last time out when punching home in her local debut, and I don't think she needs to come forward a whole lot off that one in order to land this.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #6
#2 Freebie West She chased in the debut run, and that could set her up for something better in this second trip to post. Mild worry that the race flow is going to benefit someone who can finish a bit, and she needs to prove she can do that.
#3 Braxton's Girl She needed cheaper to do it, but she at least got past a few horses in a couple of those starts, and she wouldn't shock for a share with this crew.
#4 Fast Lane Only Fresh face isn't meeting a whole lot of super-serious form in here, so check her out on the tote and track ahead of this. Might not need to be a star to score out of the box.
Race Summary Freebie West didn't have the easiest go of things in the debut run and has a lot of upside with that race under her belt, and I assume she'll be quick enough to find herself right in the mix into the turn again today.

      FRANK CARULLI'S DAILY PICKS

      Turf Paradise - Race #4
#4 SPARKLEY BARKLEY (5-2) Chased 3-to-5 winner in local debut, gets class relief on the cutback to 5F.
#2 JOYRIDING (2-1) Rallied to finish between two next-out winners, gets Lasix for seasonal debut.
#7 MYSTIC SKYE (5-1) Need not be much to factor in this field, gets Americano to ride.
Race Summary SPARKLEY BARKLEY chased comparable fractions to a same-day, $15,000/nw2 claimer, couldn’t keep up with the odds-on winner and was passed by a couple deep closers in a longer sprint. She figures tough in her second start off a four-month layoff and offers better value than the morning-line favorite. Bet to win and place and play a Pick 3 with numbers 4/3/7, 8, 9.
      Turf Paradise - Race #5
#3 HIGH GUNNER (2-1) First or second in 10 of 15 against better at Turf Paradise, gets ideal set-up too.
#2 TROUBLE N PARADISE (6-1) Appeared in several photo finishes in lightly-raced career.
#8 SMILING LADY (3-1) Recaptured some of long-lost form at the bottom level against Arizona breds.
Race Summary With plenty of speed up ahead, HIGH GUNNER should be heard from late as she looks to improve on a 6/1-2-2 streak in sprints at Turf Paradise. She topped $100,000 in earnings last out, now class drops for a hot barn. Bet to win and place and play a 3/2, 8/ALL trifecta.
      Turf Paradise - Race #6
#7 GOLDEN MIDNIGHT (5-1) Good price, better distance, best speed figure for 21-percent barn.
#8 FAE ALLANNAH (9-2) Landed minor awards in her last three starts at 6-1/2F and beyond.
#9 BARBIE’S FURY (4-1) Worked forwardly for her return, takes magnified class drop.
Race Summary Somebody has to win in this group on unproven milers with little form. GOLDEN MIDNIGHT gets the call to do so in her third start as a 4-year-old. She raced wide in a fast-paced sprint at this level, earned the top speed figure in the field and could appreciate the added ground considering her dam, Midnight Lilly, won a one-mile MSW test on turf at Santa Anita. Bet to win and place and play a 7-8-9 exacta box.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 6 SABRES 5/2
            # 1 JANES GIRLS 6/1
            # 2 FLAT OUT FANCY 5/1
I think SABRES is a formidable choice. Her 71 average has this mare with among the best Equibase Speed Figs for this race. With a formidable 69 speed rating last time out, will clearly be a factor in this race. Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group recently. JANES GIRLS - Her 63 average has this mare with among the top Equibase Speed Figs for this event. FLAT OUT FANCY - This mare obviously likes the distance, going 2 for 10 in her races lately. She looks very good in this slot and I expect will be on the lead or close at the halfway point.

              Turf Paradise - Race #4 - Post: 2:45pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 56

              Rating:

              #2 JOYRIDING (ML=2/1)

JOYRIDING - Taking a trip down the ladder based on class rating points; has the ability to make her presence felt. Koch, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix right here. A positive sign.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 SPARKLEY BARKLEY (ML=5/2), #8 TEN OF HEARTS (ML=9/2), #7 MYSTIC SKYE (ML=5/1),

SPARKLEY BARKLEY - Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance affairs recently. Unlikely to see her doing it this time either. Didn't land in the top three on February 11th after the extended time off. Be doubtful of this thoroughbred today. TEN OF HEARTS - Hard to wager on at 9/2 odds after the last two outings. Don't believe this horse will do much running today. That last speed rating was quite unimpressive when compared with today's class rating. MYSTIC SKYE - Most likely won't make much of an impact this time.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - JOYRIDING - This filly improved her speed rating two races back on Nov 10th and improved again in the last race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #2 JOYRIDING on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

                # 5 DURATION 2/1
                # 3 MARVELOUS MO 4/1
                # 2 ALCHEMISM 9/2
I think DURATION is a very good choice. Ran a very strong last race. Formidable average speed figs in dirt sprint races make this racer a definite contender. This gelding has a good win percent in dirt sprint races. MARVELOUS MO - Looks very good to be up near the front end at the first call. Has to be carefully examined - I like the figures from the last race. ALCHEMISM - Posted a very good speed rating last time out. He should be carefully examined given the respectable speed figs.

                  Will Rogers Downs - Race #2 - Post: 1:42pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 68

                  Rating:

                  #6 HILLBILLY UP (ML=7/2)

HILLBILLY UP - TrackMaster keeps good stats on this type of information. This gelding always seems to compete well after a vacation. Bravo drops him down to this level. You don't need too much more handicapping info to think this horse should run well at this level. He has the uppermost earnings per race. Give the once over to this thoroughbred.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 BRODY'S CHROME (ML=2/1), #1 WORK ZONE (ML=3/1), #2 KEEP UP THE PACE (ML=5/1),

BRODY'S CHROME - Earned a mediocre speed rating last race out in a $7,500 Claiming race on February 3rd. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure. WORK ZONE - This stretch-runner should have a rough go of it to get up in time with an absence of early speed in this race. In this situation, this vulnerable equine's inability to close any ground in the last race is definitely troubling. KEEP UP THE PACE - This animal doesn't have a conquering state of mind. Regularly finishes in the place and show hole. Finished third in his most recent effort with a common speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to triumph after that in this field.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #6 HILLBILLY UP to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though

RUN RUN ELEGANT has a very nice shot to take this race. Could dominate this field of starters, just look at the speed fig - 74 - from his last showing. Driver-trainer are a potent partnership when teaming up on a common entrant. 54 percent ROI recently. When the starter calls, contenders coming out of the 4 hole have more wins than is normal. CHARLIE BAR - Could provide us a triumph based on good recent speed ratings - earning an average of 77. There is a good possibility of an increase in speed as this gelding changes equipment - second time hoppled. GLOBAL ACTION S - Could be the finest in the group of horses here, showing great figures of late. Avg speed is a solid 77. Good for a win bet just off the stellar prior class statistics. Have to like this contender.

EDDIE NINE TOES has a great shot to take this contest. He's squaring off in good form, recording substantial TrackMaster speed figs. An excellent pick. This nice horse looks strong considering the high class stats. Not a good idea to throw out of any exotics. You have to lean toward a horse that wins regularly, very high win clip. LIL ROCKSTAR - The handicapping team noted a clear-cut affair out of this interesting entrant last time. Looking for a duplicate of that to take the whole enchilada. Deters has been able to get this standardbred to perform when sending to the post. Always worth a look. YANKEE'S MO - Sometimes you just have to go with a vibe, support this one's chances.
