Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream Park

    by Jeremy Plonk

It’s about to get serious on the Triple Crown trail. Kentucky Derby hopefuls are down to their final preps in some cases, but most have 2 races to go and beginning this weekend with the Fountain of Youth, Gotham and Rebel in the spotlight. The Fountain of Youth delivered us last year’s star sophomore Sovereignty and anything close to that level of 2026 prospects would make for a super Saturday in Hallandale Beach.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet take advantage of up to a $10 money-back special promo on Triple Crown prep race win bets, featuring Saturday’s Fountain of Youth at Gulfstream and Gotham at Aqueduct, as well as Sunday’s Rebel at Oaklawn. Get up to $10 back if your win bet finishes second or third when you bet with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Fountain of Youth (Race 14):

#1-JACKSON HOLE: Unbeaten colt has wins at Gulfstream and Fair Grounds as he ascends to the stakes ranks for the first time. You’ve got historic Fountain of Youth connections as John Velazquez’s 5 wins are most by any jockey and Todd Pletcher leads all trainers with 4. They scored in tandem in 2007 (Scat Daddy) and 2010 (Eskendereya). This $1.3 million purchase is by Florida Derby / Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist.

#2-ROCKIES BALBOA: Sprinter took 4 tries to break his maiden, dropping in class, and then followed with a restricted allowance score for back-to-back wins. Girvin colts gets major distance and class tests in one swoop. Luis Saez is a 3-time FoY winner (2014, 2015, 2024), and takes over for departing rider Junior Alvarado, who pilots Chief Wallabee on Saturday. Trainer Dale Romans had success here with Promises Fulfilled in 2018.

#3-TALKIN: Champagne Stakes runner-up makes his 3-year-old return while looking to wash away the disappointment of a ninth-place effort in the Remsen to close 2025. Trainer Danny Gargan looks for a second Fountain of Youth title in 3 years, having won in 2024 with eventual Belmont Stakes hero Dornoch. Joel Rosario curiously swaps seats as Kendrick Carmouche takes the call on Napoleon Solo on Saturday.

#4-COMMANDMENT: Tries to join Simplification (2022) as the only horses to win the Mucho Macho Man and Fountain of Youth – the former run for the first time as a mile race in January in 2013. Left no doubt who was best over this track Jan. 3 by 6-3/4 lengths for trainer Brad Cox. Irad Ortiz has FoY scores aboard Promises Fulfilled (2018) and Forte (2023). This $500,000 Into Mischief colt is out of 2018 Grade 1 Spinaway winner Sippican Harbor.

#5-BRAVARO: With Holy Bull Stakes winner Nearly bypassing this race to train up to the Florida Derby, this Jan. 31 runner-up is that prep’s major alumnus in action Saturday. New Yorked-bred Bravaro won twice last fall at Aqueduct vs. state-breds, including the Sleepy Hollow Stakes. He’s wintered in Florida for local trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. and fit in well enough in his Gulfstream unveiling. Tyler Gaffalione has the return mount on the son of 2015 Fountain of Youth disqualified winner Upstart, who was placed second for interference.

#6-CHIEF WALLABEE: Connections of 2025 FoY winner and eventual Kentucky Derby / Belmont hero Sovereignty, trainer Bill Mott and jockey Junior Alvarado, seek a repeat. That hasn’t happened in this race since Jimmy Jones and Bill Hartack in 1957-’58. Junior Alvarado also guided Mohaymen (2016) to a Fountain of Youth victory. If they pull it off, it will be with this field’s most lightly raced runner, a Jan. 10 Gulfstream debut winner in sharp style. His runner-up, The Puma, since returned to finish third in the Sam F. Davis Stakes at Tampa Bay Downs.

#7-NAPOLEON SOLO: Undefeated winner of the Grade 1 Champagne on Oct. 4 hasn’t raced since, making this one of the most anticipated returns of the 2026 class. The Chad Summers trainee was put away following his 6-1/2 length victory over Fountain of Youth return rival Talkin and has trained with 4 bullet workouts from 6 drills at Palm Meadows this winter. Kendrick Carmouche has the mount on this Liam’s Map $40,000 bargain.

#8-BULL BY THE HORNS: Stakes debut for this Nov. 1 Gulfstream maiden graduate, who looks to improve off a Tampa Bay allowance third last month in his only start since. Saffie Joseph Jr. trains this Essential Qualit colt, who will be ridden once again by Micah Husbands. Longshot at least has a win over the track and some 2-turn experience.

#9-GLOBAL AVIATOR: No threat fifth-place finish in the Holy Bull Stakes at 12-1 odds after minor trouble at the start. Rohan Crichton trainee has had gate issues in both starts, but overcame them for a rallying debut win at 6 furlongs. The $12,000 Global Campaign colt faces his toughest cast year and regular rider Joe Bravo returns.

#10-SOLITUDE DUDE: Arguably the leading 3-year-old sprinter on the east coast, this unbeaten Saffie Joseph trainee looks to build on Inaugural and Swale Stakes victories for a fourth tally. He’ll try beyond 7 furlongs for the first time, from a wide draw under new rider Flavien Prat as Irad Ortiz Jr. hops to ride Commandment. Colt by Yaupon has a sprint pedigree both top and bottom, but he’s opened up margin late in all 3 wins to date.

#11-LOST MONEY: Longshot maiden hasn’t come close in 3 starts, but does exit 2 of the most live maiden races of the meet vs. Waymark and Canaletto. Juan Arias trains the Street Sense colt who will be making his first start around 2 turns from an extremely difficult post draw. Jockey Javier Castellano posted FoY success with Gunnevera in 2017.

Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Gotham Stakes at Aqueduct

      by Jeremy Plonk

Five of nine entrants in the Grade 3 $300,000 Gotham Stakes are Triple Crown nominees, a subtle sign that this 1-turn mile is more a crossroads race than a tried-and-true Kentucky Derby prep. After all, it’s been since Secretariat, yes THE Secretariat in 1973, that a Gotham alum has worn the roses. But 50 qualifying points for the first Saturday in May are in line for the winner – making it a veritable automatic qualifier.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Gotham Stakes (Race 10):

#1-BALBOA: He scratched from last week’s Miracle Wood at his Laurel Park home base in exchange for this spot. The Brittany Russell trainee returns to the Big A for a third time: third in the Remsen, second in the Jerome and looking to notch his first graded stakes victory. The $875,000 Not This Time colt began his career with Bob Baffert in California before hitting the transfer portal.

#2-HAMMOND: Gulfstream-based sprinter stretches out beyond 7 furlongs for the first time. Exits a third-place try in the Swale behind Saffie Joseph Jr. stablemate Solitude Dude, arguably the top 3-year-old sprinter in the country. Hammond is from the first crop of sire Charlatan, an elite speedster who extended to 1-1/8 miles in winning the 2020 Arkansas Derby.

#3-CROWN THE BUCKEYE: Ohio-bred speed merchant set the pace but failed to sustain in the Gun Runner and Lecomte this winter at Fair Grounds. Trainer Mike Maker gets the colt by top-class sprinter Yaupon back around 1 turn for the first time since winning last August’s Cleveland Kindergarten by more than a dozen lengths. Early pace pilot Ricardo Santana has the return mount.

#4-FOURTH AND ONE: Rank early in the 2-turn Withers before wilting, this Jeremiah Englehart trainee cuts back in trip. He broke his maiden at the Big A in a mile and was third over the same trip last year in the Sleepy Hollow Stakes. The Maxfield colt must prove his mettle in open company under Jose Lezcano.

#5-RIGHT TO PARTY: Jan. 10 maiden graduate steps up in class but returns to the same track and distance as his successful second start. A $325,000 Constitution colt, this Kenny McPeek trainee debuted a distant third at Aqueduct behind Gotham return rival Iron Honor. That was over 6 furlongs, and his backers will hope the longer distance can help make up 9 lengths on the horse who breaks next door.

#6-IRON HONOR: Chad Brown’s debut winner Dec. 13 since has seen that form flattered with his second and third-place pursuers returning to win next out. By Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist and out of a Blame mare, the stamina should be there to think his 6-furlong unveiling was a feather in his cap – winning a fast race at what likely isn’t his optimal trip. Manny Franco has the return ride.

#7-EXHIBITION ONLY: Trainer Rudy Rodriguez blew up the Withers Feb. 6 with maiden-to-stakes leaper Talk To Me Jimmy and looks for a second NYRA prep trail notch with this fellow, last-out maiden romper for the same ownership. Exhibition Only didn’t make much headway on turf at 2, but flipped a switch Feb. 5 a the Big A, wiring a 1-turn mile by nearly 8 lengths with the addition of Lasix. That medication won’t be in play for the Gotham, so we’ll soon find out more answers about this Complexity colt.

#8-CREOLE CHROME: Fair Grounds-based colt also was cross-entered in Saturday’s Star Guitar Stakes vs. Louisiana-breds on his home track. Trainer Joe Sharp would be sending him on the road to face open company and make his first start beyond 6 furlongs if they head to the Gotham. He’s won 2 of 3, finishing third in the Louisiana Juvenile in his only stakes bid. Expected to remain at home.

#9-DIRTY RICH: Well-traveled sprinter has raced in Kentucky, California and Arkansas and looks for another road test. Peter Miller trains the $35,000 Thousand Words colt who has overachieved to win Oaklawn’s Advent Stakes. He was most recently third to Obliteration, who since ran a bang-up second in the Saudi Derby. Ramon Vazquez, battling at the top of the Oaklawn standings coming into the week, makes the journey with him.

Race of the Week: The Very One Saturday at Gulfstream

        by Jeremy Plonk

        The Lead:
One of the biggest days of the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet returns Saturday for Fountain of Youth Day. Kentucky Derby hopefuls look to follow Sovereignty's footsteps in the Race 14 finale. The undercard is loaded with stakes, and the late pick 5 kicks off with the Grade 3 The Very One in Race 10.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet be sure to take part in the 2 Million 1/ST Rewards Points Hit & Split on Saturday's late pick 4 (Races 11-14) at Gulfstream. And, there's up to a $10 money-back special in the Fountain of Youth Stakes if your win bet finishes second or third.

        Field Depth:
Grade 3 winners include VENENCIA and CANDY QUEST. JUST BASKING is a listed stakes winner and Grade 1-placed, while NO SHOW SAMMY JO is a listed stakes winner and Grade 3-placed. VENENCIA and NO SHOW SAMMY JO have kept the consistently strongest schedules.

        Pace:
Limited speed expected over 1-3/8 miles on turf. VENENCIA may be sent forward while FOR FLYING and FANTASY PERFORMER are candidates but not blazers. NO SHOW SAMMY JO has run some good races when hustled and from an outside draw might be asked to show more pace than recent starts. But it's guesswork on this pace map.

        Our Eyes:
        Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-GALLANT GRETA: Closer seems to run her race consistently, just a matter of how it stacks up with the competition. She was a no-match second for No Show Sammy Joe over this course and distance Dec. 24 and then placed too deep last time in the Grade 3 Clement. Jockey Luis Saez piloted Beach Bomb to The Very One stakes success a year ago and assumes a new mount for Mike Maker.

#2-JUST BASKING: Lightly raced 5-year-old has a thin turf resume with one dull effort at Fair Grounds in her only start of 2025. Her 1-turn mile allowance on dirt was a promising, old-school prep by Ian Wilkes and she’s well-drawn under Javier Castellano for this 3-turn journey. Distance should suit and she’s had multiple BRIS late pace figures to brag about up to 10 furlongs. Big change in trip, but not without intrigue.

#3-VENENCIA: Her October victory in Keeneland’s Grade 3 Dowager feels a bit 1-hit wonderish when surrounded by her races around it. She’s changed trainers 4 times since August and hasn’t show much in a couple of Saffie Joseph Jr. appearances. Tyler Gaffalione seeks his second The Very One win in the past 3 years, winning in 2024 aboard R Calli Kim. May be near the lead with a good draw and lack of other pace.

#4-CANDY QUEST: 4-year-old return bid in Tampa’s Grade 3 Endeavor was thwarted by a waltzing pace, but her 104 BRIS late pace figure showed that she came back running to be second. That’s not even her best late fig, getting a 107 in the Dueling Grounds Oaks. Consistent form at shorter trips and Mark Casse’s stakes success nationally has been remarkable of late. Irad Ortiz Jr. is a 3-time The Very One winner (2018, 2019, 2022) and takes the mount for the first time.

#5-FOR FLYING: First of 2 in here for trainer Graham Motion, who won The Very One last year with Beach Bomb. 6-year-old mare has just 15 starts and is 0-8 since winning 4 of her first 7. A return to turf may help, but her recent synthetic form doesn’t inspire confidence.

#6-DONA CLOTA: Former Chilean star melted down in the 2025 Pegasus World Cup Filly & Mare Turf and made only 1 summer start at Saratoga since, finishing fifth in an allowance. She’s on her third trainer in 3 domestic starts, and perhaps Saffie Joseph Jr. has found something Chad Brown and Nacho Correas didn’t. Interesting to see Flavien Prat take the mount.

#7-FANTASY PERFORMER: Synthetic has been her best surface and there’s some concern with this level of competition, though she did best The Very One rival For Flying on New Year’s Day. But that one looks like a longshot here, too.

#8-LOVE SONG: Jockey John Velazquez takes aim at a fifth The Very One title and his first since 2015. That would match Jerry Bailey’s all-time wins record in this race. This impeccably bred Ghostzapper-Music Note filly has come nowhere close to her pedigree’s promise and mustered only 1 stakes start in 11 races to date, a third at Turfway last out. The longer aces have been among her best, but 6: 0-3-0 on turf doesn’t endorse her.

#9-NO SHOW SAMMY JO: 6-year-old has won 6 of 14 in a stop-and-start career but seemed to hold together well through a 7-race 2025 campaign that saw her win 2 listed stakes. Her victory over the course and distance Dec. 24 in the Via Borghese makes her an obvious threat. Trainer Graham Motion seeks a third victory in The Very One and second straight after Beach Bomb a season ago. Wide post and weaker-than-you’d-think late BRIS pace figures do caution against taking a short price.

        Most Likely Exotics Contender:
CANDY QUEST is a course winner in a field that's 2-17 combined locally. She's 7-10 in the exacta and 9-10 in the superfecta lifetime and has the best late move in the lineup.

        Best Longshot Contender:
JUST BASKING isn't a turf marathoner, but I love the old-school prep path for a trainer in Ian Wilkes who isn't one to placea horse wildly over her head.

        Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$75 win CANDY QUEST. $10 exacta box CANDY QUEST and JUST BASKING ($20). $5 exacta CANDY QUEST over DONA CLOTA.

Scott Shapiro: Gulfstream's Fountain of Youth Day Late Pick 4 Hit & Split | Saturday, February 28, 2026

          by Scott Shapiro

One of the best cards in North America this year takes place at Gulfstream Park on Saturday afternoon headlined by the Fountain of Youth (G2). The Derby prep is the finale on a stacked 14-race extravaganza that gets started at 11:30 AM eastern. Amongst the plethora of horizontal wagering opportunities is an all-stakes Pick 4 that covers the final four races on the slate. The marketing team at 1/ST Bet and Xpressbet has opted to make that the final $2M rewards points Hit & Split of the month. For those that have not taken part during the previous cards, remember to register on the promotional landing page.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

          Race 11: Davona Dale (G2)
          Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 8 She Be Smooth; 7 Swing Vote
          Backups: 9 On Time Girl

Forecast: There is no doubt that #9 On Time Girl is the one to beat in this one-turn mile event for 3YO fillies, but the tote board is all but certain to show that. The Albaugh Family Stables homebred overcame adversity in the Forward Gal (G3), is 4 for 5 in her career, and draws favorably to the outside, but the value will not be there. I give a pair of young females a legitimate shot to beat her, including top choice #8 She Be Smooth. The Calumet Farm filly was very impressive on debut winning over this same surface and distance last month. She not only relaxed professionally on the inside before finishing full of run late, but ran by a filly that won by 8 in her next start. It is not easy to win over these one-turn mile configurations on debut and I love the move to an outside draw.

          Race 12: Honey Fox (G3)
          Grade: B
Main Ticket: 1 Silver Moonlight; 3 Classic Q
          Backups: 10 Crevalle d’Oro

Forecast: This one-mile turf event for older fillies and mares marks the return of #9 Lush Lips. The Brendan Walsh trainee had an outstanding 3YO season earning nearly $900k, but I am not in love with her off the break. The 4YO drew poorly to the outside and takes on older runners for the first time. She has the upside to get to the wire first, but I prefer a pair that were done more favors at the draw. #1 Silver Moonlight has been freshened up by Saffie Joseph since rattling off 3 consecutive victories to end her 2025 campaign. She loves this course and should get a dream run along the inside under Flavien Prat. #3 Classic Q also is worth a look. Toss her last when she was beaten to the lead and fought the rider through the early stages. I expect the Mark Casse trainee to make the front under John Velazquez, which makes her dangerous over this course.

          Race 13: Mac Diarmida (G2)
          Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 2 Without; 3 Layabout
          Backups: 6 Anegada; 9 Tank; 7 Zverev

Forecast: I lack a strong opinion in this 1 3/8-mile test over the Gulfstream sod, but will roll with #2 Without on top. The son of Lope De Vega is eligible for a first-level allowance, but trainer Graham Motion opts to send him out in this spot after a solid runner-up effort last out instead. He draws favorably along the inside and very well could have been sent here from France with this spot always on the mind. #3 Layabout aims to make it 3 wins in a row, but will almost certainly not be on the front end like last time out. The presence of #9 Tank should have jockey David Egan happy to stalk a bit off the pace in this gelding’s eleventh career try. He has proven versatile though giving him a big shot to make it 4 straight.

Race 14: Fountain of Youth (G2)
          Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 6 Chief Wallabee; 7 Napoleon Solo
          Backups: 4 Commandment; 3 Talkin

Forecast: I am not overly confident in any particular horse, but it is very likely that one of the top three choices on oddsmaker Brian Nadeau’s morning line gets to the wire first in this year’s Fountain of Youth. #4 Commandment is as likely as anyone, but at 2-1, he is tough to get excited about trying two-turns for the first time. On the other hand, I do not know what to expect from #7 Napoleon Solo since it has been nearly five months since we have seen him compete in the afternoons, but clearly his “A” game is very good. #6 Chief Wallabee has major questions to answer as well, but was uber-professional in his debut over this course on January 10. He should handle the two-turns. #3 Talkin is my wild card. He ran in three live races as a 2YO and is likely to try to make a run from off the pace given the rider change from Kendrick Carmouche to Joel Rosario. His last in the Remsen (G2) is an obvious toss. He should be a big price.

Scott Shapiro: Triple Crown Prep Selections | Fountain of Youth, Gotham, Rebel

            by Scott Shapiro

After a slow week when it comes to Triple Crown preps, things pick up big time this weekend on the Road to the Kentucky Derby. A pair of qualifiers take place on Saturday afternoon with Oaklawn Park taking center stage on Sunday. As many of you know, 1/ST BET and Xpressbet launched a $10 Money Back offer earlier this year on all Triple Crown prep races. It continues this weekend with a trio of opportunities for horseplayers. Here is how I plan to take advantage of my Money Back plays. If it is your first time jumping in on this promotion, remember to register.

Gotham (G3), Aqueduct Saturday Race 10
The first of the three Derby qualifiers is the lone one-turn points race on the weekend. This one-mile event over the Aqueduct main track drew a field of 9 led by 6-5-ML favorite #6 Iron Honor. The Chad Brown trainee broke his maiden in impressive fashion going 6-furlongs in mid-December and has been given time since. Brown opts to ship him back north for this spot despite the fact he has been training in Payson Park in Florida over the last month plus. He is the likeliest winner, but given the Money Back Offer insurance and his likely price it makes sense to look elsewhere. #2 Hammond is a colt that should get a great trip in his first start outside of the Sunshine State for Saffie Joseph. He did not get out of the cleanly when we saw him run third in the Swale in late January, but still ran decent to finish third to his undefeated stablemate. If he can relax along the inside early, he should have a big chance when they turn for home.

            Play: #2 Hammond (5-1 ML)

Fountain of Youth (G2), Gulfstream Race 14
I am not sure all three of the morning line favorites in this year’s Fountain of Youth will run their races, but expect at least one of them to exit arguably the strongest prep to date with a spot all but assured in the Derby starting gate. #4 Commandment is listed as the considerable public choice after his win in the Mucho Macho Man. He is likely to run his race and get a favorable setup, but I think there is a good chance there is at least one better. #7 Napoleon Solo is probably the likeliest to be that horse by getting the jump, but the value will most likely be better with #7 Chief Wallabee. The Constitution colt won under wraps and did so extremely professionally in his debut on January 10. He has to answer the two-turn question and prove he belongs at this class level, but projects to get a great trip. I will use my Money Back play on him, assuming he is a bigger price than Napoleon Solo.

Play: #6 Chief Wallabee (9-2 ML)

Rebel (G2), Oaklawn Sunday Race 11
I struggled coming up with a strong opinion in this $1M event at 1 1/16 miles. #4 Blackout Time can definitely win, but is an underlay at his ML price. #2 Litmus Test is likely to get bet down from his ML offering and might have things his way on the front end, but has yet to prove to me is a supremely talented runner. Mark Casse holds a strong hand much like he did in the Southwest (G3) with winner #7 Silent Tactic and Smarty Jones winner #6 Strategic Risk. Silent Tactic has been very good through two starts on dirt, but his running style requires him to get the right trip and setup. On the other hand, Strategic Risk usually puts himself into the race making things a little easier on himself. That was not the case in the Southwest though when he got caught in chase mode immediately and was not competitive from there. Without D’Code and Buetane, I expect this pace to be far more moderate though, which should allow jockey Javier Castellano to stalk just off the pace like he did well to kick off his 3YO campaign. At his likely price, I will take a chance he bounces back big on Sunday evening.

Play: #6 Strategic Risk (12-1 ML)

              BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

Santa Anita Park - Race #5
#5 Curlin Command Flat run from him going long last time out, but there is reason to believe we'll see better today as he returns fresh. Would be thrilled at anything like the 6/1 ML offering.
#10 Danzing Wild Cat Considered him on top while returning off the long break in this sprint spot, as his run here in January 2025 was decent enough to think he stacks up well with these if he can come back running.
#4 Scene By Me He'll have to fire off the layoff, but his debut run here last summer was pretty solid and suggests he's in the mix with this crew if he holds that form off the layoff.
Race Summary Curlin Command is one of a handful of interesting returnees in here, and I think he gets the run of the race while tracking a fair but manageable tempo.
Santa Anita Park - Race #7
#6 My Perfect Wave Some price appeal here in hopes she can turn the tables on some of these who beat her last out. She didn't have the cleanest go that day and is still lightly raced enough to think there could be another move forward in her.
#4 Princesa Moche Tactical pace looked good stretching out to score in that Grade III last time out, and she should find herself in another great spot while waiting to get the first jump.
#1 Thought Process She's the one to beat with some classy running lines on her page, and she draws well for a super-cozy run from the fence.
Race Summary My Perfect Wave needs to step up again if she's going to beat a good crew here, but I think she's capable of better than the last one and should get overlooked on the board.
Santa Anita Park - Race #9
#9 Shahar Get a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this, but I wonder if she might be ready to go in a race where I don't have super-strong feelings about any of those with experience.
#8 Soul Sister Wanted to see better from her last time out, but wouldn't be a total shock to see her bounce back with something just a tiny bit better, and that might keep her in the mix.
#4 Nerida She gets Lasix for the local debut with an OK European debut on her page from last fall, and I don't think she's ending up in the deepest spot you're ever going to see at this local level.
Race Summary Shahar debuts in an iffy race where a fresh face might be the right answer. Soul Sister has appeal if the price gets interesting.

                FRANK CARULLI'S DAILY PICKS

                Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#3 SMOOTH BREEZE (7-2) Looks to improve off comeback try as he did throughout 3yo season.
#1 NOBLE CONFESSOR (5-1) Three-time graded stakes-placed turf router makes first allowance start.
#8 PROFOUND (8-1) ‘Needed more’ but earned top speed fig in fast-paced grass mile for new barn.
Race Summary SMOOTH BREEZE improved steadily during a multiple stakes-placed 3-year-old campaign, then tracked a slow pace and ‘needed more’ in an otherwise useful seasonal debut. He lures Irad Ortiz Jr. to ride and gets the call for a win and place bet at a distance which he conquered twice. Also play a 1-3-8 exacta box.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #6
#10 SPIRIT DOLL (4-1) Idle since smashing stakes victory on the Gulfstream lawn, layoff no issue in this barn.
#9 SISTER TROIENNE (6-5) Drew off to win five consecutive long-distance tests, the last two in grass stakes.
#4 BOSSY CANDY (15-1) Second-out, 6F stakes winner stretches out, makes turf debut off sharp 5F workout.
Race Summary SPIRIT DOLL, a debut winner at Saratoga, was eased in the Grade 1 Spinaway in her next start, then tried turf for the first time in the $75,000 Our Dear Peggy Stakes at Gulfstream. She saved ground in third through the backstretch, inhaled the front-running longshot duo on the turn and left the closers with no chance on the heels of a powerful stretch run. Bet to win and place in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes and play a 4-9-10 exacta box.
                Gulfstream Park - Race #9
#3 IRON HAND (5-1) Unbeaten on synthetic surface and at this distance, second start after bumpy return.
#5 CIAO CHUCK (6-1) Can turn tables on similar rivals in second start off 10-month layoff, gets Prat.
#11 HORSEPOWER (4-1) Finished 1-2 in 12 of 18 starts, only drew outside post 6 once since 2025.
Race Summary IRON HAND blossomed on Gulfstream’s synthetic track with four consecutive wins in the middle of 2025, three going a route of ground. He set the pace in two subsequent stakes, managing one third. He returned from a four-month layoff in the Sunshine Turf Stakes but was bounced around near the half-mile marker from a good stalking position and lacked kick thereafter. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5-11 exacta box.

                      Feb. 27, 2026

Race14 at Gulfstream Park | Saturday, February 28 | Post Time 6:11 PM Eastern

Fountain of Youth Stakes | Purse $425,000 | One Mile and One Sixteenth | Three Year Olds

Winning contenders are Chief Wallabee (6), Commandment (4), Solitude Dude (10)

                      Contenders and analysis:

Among the top three contenders, all won ‘easily’, but only Chief Wallabee (6) earned a “Handily” moniker. Off his winning debut, Hall of Fame trainer Bill Mott entered him in the “Road to the Derby” race, where Mott won six stakes races in five years with horses off their debut wins. Chief Wallabee, in his debut, was in hand early, sitting fifth after a quarter, then fourth while three wide at the final quarter to win. He moved up to get within a head behind at the eighth pole and didn’t use any effort to win by one and a half lengths, earning a 91 Equibase Speed Figure, which would indicate he could easily have been faster. The only two that were faster are Solitude Dude (96) and Commandment (93), who posted faster numbers, but since Chief Wallabee won in his only race, he possibly has improvement in him. Mott won the 2025 Fountain of Youth Stakes with Sovereignty, the 2025 Horse of the Year. Last year, Sovereignty earned his maiden after winning this race. Although Sovereignty had four previous starts, his maiden win was before winning the Fountain of Youth Stakes. Mott also ran second with Rocket Can in this race in 2023.

Commandment (4) won his second and third career races by an average of six lengths, with an improvement from an 80 figure on November 1 to 93 figures on January 3. He won the recent race ‘ridden out’ with Irad Ortiz, Jr., who chose to ride him over Solitude Dude, who he won with in the Swale Stakes. If Commandment improves 13 speed points again, he wins.

Solitude Dude (10) is undefeated in three races, including two stakes. He won the Swale Stakes with a 96 figure, winning ‘ridden out’. In two of his races, he led from start to finish. In his second start, he was second after a quarter mile before winning. In his three wins, Solitude Dude won by an average of seven lengths. My only concern is that Ortiz, Jr., chooses Commandment, but Prat is also a fine jockey.

                      Bets:

                      Wins bets:

Chief Wallabee (6)at fair odds of 5 or 2 or higher.

Commandment (4) can be considered at odds of 3 to 1 or higher.

Solitude Dude (10) can be considered at odds of 7 to 2 or higher.

                      Exactas:

Box Chief Wallabee (6), Commandment (4), Solitude Dude (10)

                        The $300,000 Gotham (G3), Aqueduct – Race 10

The Gotham is the fifth of six stops on the New York road to Kentucky Derby 2026 with 105 qualifying points [50-25-15-10-5] that are available to the top five finishers. A field of 9 was drawn but only eight will run with the scratch of the Louisiana-bred Creole Chrome. (6) Iron Honor was an impressive debut in December at Aqueduct when he pressed the pace and drew off to beat a field where the second and third-place finishers came back to win. He earned a speed figure that clearly tops this Gotham field. (2) Hammond won a stakes race for Juveniles at Gulfstream Park in November and then was third in the Swale behind two well-regarded Derby contenders. (5) Right to Partywas third behind the top choice in his first start and then broke his maiden going a mile. (4) Fourth and One hit the board in a pair of NY-bred stakes before breaking his maiden by more than seven lengths. Betting strategy: Exacta key box: 6 with 2, 4, 5. Trifecta box: 2, 4, 5, 6.

                          (7) Napoleon Solo was an electrifying winner of the Champagne Stakes and is training smartly for his 3-year-old debut. (4) Commandment should be the main rival in a race loaded with speed. (6) Chief Wallabee comes off an impressive debut win. (5) Bravaro was second in the Holt Bull and cannot be ignored here. Betting strategy: 7 to win. Exacta and trifecta box: 4-5-6-7.

COMMENTS: MAGNITUDE recorded a triple digit speed figure in four of his last five races. TAP INTO THIS will be closing and usually comes off the bench ready to go. NU WHATS NEW is unbeaten in a pair at Oaklawn but is oh for five elsewhere. GOULDS GOLD is a consistent performer that should sit off the pace and try to close it out.
