Jeremy Plonk: Oaklawn's Rebel Day Late Pick 5

If March comes in like a lion, Sunday’s month-opening card at Oaklawn Park will roar. The $1 million Grade 2 Rebel tops the 12-race program that includes the Grade 3 Honeybee. Both are part of the late pick 5 sequence boasting field sizes of 9x10x11x10x14 before scratches.

Oaklawn Race 8: Maiden Special Weight

#2 Munnings Challenge debuts for Brad Cox and if he’s half as good at Oaklawn as his super sprint dam Amy’s Challenge was in her heyday, lookout. A bullet workout at Fair Grounds and a strong tab indicate this one should come out running under Irad Ortiz Jr. #6 Silver Syndicate showed excellent speed in his debut and would be no surprise to carry it wire-to-wire with Flavien Prat. #3 Fancy Fairlane’s debut second to next-out Lecomte winner Golden Tempo obviously is a race that can be very competitive if he takes to Oaklawn as well. John Velazquez rides as the trio of power jockeys here are all very live.

Oaklawn Race 9: Honeybee Stakes

#4 Newtown Pike is the value play after a longshot runner-up in the Martha Washington in which she was hung wide and now draws better. I’m not convinced #9 Explora, who will be odds-on, is a lock at the distance after a 28-second final quarter in losing the Las Virgenes at a mile while a 4-5 chalk. But she’s obviously a player. I’ll also use Martha Washington winner #6 Search Party as Mark Casse continued to dominate the local stakes this week with a ninth such win Friday.

Oaklawn Race 10: Maiden Special Weight

#2 Gethsemane’s mid-pack finish last out was an improvement on the stretch-out and note winner Reagan’s Honor came back to obliterate older allowance horses next out at Fair Grounds. This Brad Cox trainee draws beautifully in post 2 and should be running late. The counter to him would be to take some early pace. I wasn’t impressed by the race Feb. 6 won by Crupper in which many of these exit. #11 Dragones has early foot and will be hard-used from the outside. This $1.7 million blueblood for Steve Asmussen may have caught an easier field.

Oaklawn Race 11: Rebel Stakes

I’m all-in on a pair of prices in the Rebel, #3 Class President (10-1 morning line) off a Swale runner-up in which he could have caved and didn’t vs. an elite 3YO sprinter. He’ll like the stretch-out and Pletcher won this race with Malagacy off similar Florida sprint form. The other 10-1 ML shot to fear is #10 Soldier N Diplomat, wide but trusted in the Southwest and I love that he was back on the workout tab 10 days after and got 2 drills since that race vs. 1 for the others. There’s new-found fear of #2 Litmus Test. I thought he was decent at 2, but overrated. He missed the Southwest after a dull work, but has trained better since. The kicker is Bob Baffert’s ridiculous performance Friday by 3YO maiden Cherokee Nation, a total outlier of a massive race in his sixth career start. When the Bafferts do things like that, often many of them follow.

Oaklawn Race 12: Maiden Special Weight

#11 Breaker Wave was the only closer to make a dent in a similar Feb. 8 race as speed held first, third and fourth. Her runner-up by a neck may have suffered from an earlier move that left her a tiny bit flat late. If Israel Hernandez times it up right, she could graduate. Using her with logical #7 Like a Diamond, who gets Lasix and should be more forward off 2 good tries.

Fair Grounds - Race #3

#2 Mojane Metal	Get a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this, as she's landing in a good spot for a fresh face to make some noise. Not much depth in here once you get past the next one...
#8 Clearly My Star	Wouldn't argue too hard with you if you landed here and leaned on her in a race that doesn't offer a whole lot of compelling form on paper, but I worry that the price is going to be short and she still hasn't shown that finishing punch. The clear one to beat.
#3 Nova Nova Nova	She finished in front of Clearly My Star in that last one, but I think she's giving that one a decent tactical edge in a race without a ton of speed on paper.
Race Summary	Mojane Metal is interesting enough on pedigree for a capable team, and she might offer an OK price with Clearly My Star likely to command a lot of cash.

Fair Grounds - Race #7

#6 Ice Wolf	Not a whole lot of proven finishing punch on the page in this group, and those last two decent rallying efforts might play well with this crew if he can hold that kind of form. Enough to like.
#7 Unitas	He couldn't stay late in the debut run, but he might be tighter with that race under his belt. Could get a pretty dreamy pressing trip from out here.
#2 Castle Run	He has some of the same appeal as the top choice with that ability to run from off the speed, but I think the pick is going to offer a better number on the board. In the mix.
Race Summary	Ice Wolf has been running on well enough in his local tries to think he might be able to get past these -- he should at least be finishing when some of the chasing types tire.

Fair Grounds - Race #8

#2 Hay Jude	There are some tough customers in his company lines, and I like that he has a little bit of versatility in his running style. Think he's dangerous today.
#6 Benji Star	Curious to see how the betting shakes out in this one, as this guy brings pretty compelling form while meeting some classier types. Any move forward in the third start back would make him tough.
#9 Bron and Brow	Not impossible -- he is meeting a handful of pressing/prompting types who won't all be staying late, and he might be the best finisher in the bunch.
Race Summary	Hay Jude looks tough today, as he's got a class edge on a lot of these and should be able to find a cozy enough spot while always in touch today depending on how things shake out at the break.

1^st race [Md 20000, 1 mi] – (7) Reign It In (C) was bet down from 8-1 to 5-1 and finished second on a drop down to maiden 25,000. (6) Big Brooklynhas four top three finishes in a row in maiden $40,000 races strictly for NY-breds and the blinkers go on. (4) Charlie Hustle was racing close to the second-choice last time out. (2) Geostoblame will make a big drop down out of maiden special weights for the first time.

3^rd race [Clm 10000, 6F] – (2) Divine Leader makes his third start following a layoff and last time was third for $16,000 with the waiver. (1) Prince of Truth came back in 10 days to press the pace, get the lead, and just miss by a head which was a huge improvement and comes back now in two weeks. (4) Emerald Forest has 13 career wins and was second last time as his form is on an upswing. (5) My Man Matty comes back from a November layoff with a win for $17,500 showing in the fall.

5^th race [Md 20000, 6F] – (10) Will of a Womanne pressed the pace, had the lead, finished third behind a horse that won again, and got claimed by Linda Rice. (4) Sassy Satswas second in January in a large field of 11 in a similar spot. (3) My Devine One hit the board in her last three starts in NY-bred only claimers. (5) Golden Miracle had a second-place finish in November that would make her competitive.

6^th race [Alw 50000s, 1 mi] – (5) House United (C) was bet down from 3-1 to 8-5 and used a late run to finish second behind a horse that also won his next start. (1) Carvellian Quest was a winner for $20,000 followed by a second in a starter allowance. (6) Oil Capital was a winner of a $75,000 maiden claimer with a front-end effort following a short layoff. (8) Rock the Weekendhas been an allowance horse competing against NY-breds.

3rd race – (1) Sky’s Not Falling won for this claiming tag two starts ago. Gets the call. (8) Ruse will welcome a return to turf. (3) Mythical Man fits in nicely here. (7) Day and Age had some trouble last time and could bounce back to top form. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-7-8.

5th race – (6) Golden Perl comes off a big win and was claimed by Joseph. Gets top billing. (7) Win N Juice gets some class relief in a claimer. (5) Fear could be effective at this level. (2) Eddie Haskell may shine on Tapeta. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-5-6-7.

8th race – (9) Minotaur had a rough trip in his debut and only lost by 2 ? lengths. Can make amends here. (8) Quiet Power was second in his last two starts. How about a third time? (3) The Big Guava is an interesting firster. (11) Gondorff could sting this field despite a tough post. Betting strategy: 9 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-8-9-11.

The $1 Million Rebel (G2), Oaklawn Park, Race 11

The Rebel is the third of four stops on the Oaklawn road to Kentucky Derby 2026 with 105 qualifying points [50-25-15-10-5] that are available to the top five finishers. A field of 10 was drawn but only nine will run with the scratch of Bravaro who opts to run in the Fountain of Youth. (7) Silent Tactic was impressive in the Southwest (G3) when he looked like a winner every step of the way. He was patiently ridden from the back of the full field and went right by others with an easy stretch run. He will not be 12-1 this time but is still listed as the 9-2 third choice on the morning line. (4) Blackout Time showed promise as a 2-year-old with an open-length maiden score in Kentucky and then was second in the Breeders’ Futurity (G1) between Ted Noffey and Litmus Test. (2) Litmus Test ships to Arkansas for Bob Baffert who has had so much success in the Derby preps at Oaklawn. Last seen he was winning the Los Alamitos Futurity (G2) on the Derby trail in December. (3) Class President was a debut winner for Todd Pletcher at Gulfstream in December and stepped up to finish second in the Swale between two Derby contenders that run in the Fountain of Youth. MARUVY - I'm focusing on the class of this horse, and this one is the 'classiest' of the bunch. SKI BUM - A racer coming back this quickly after a solid effort is a good sign. AND THATS MY STORY - I really like that last contest on February 6th at Tampa Bay Downs where he finished first.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 HANDS OF TIME (ML=2/1), #2 RETEKO (ML=5/2), #6 THINGAMABOB (ML=8/1),

HANDS OF TIME - I think this morning-line choice needs this race under his belt to start getting back into shape. I'd like to see more hospitable recent showings with morning line odds of 2/1. Won't be easy for this animal to beat this bunch off of that last fig. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close to today's class rating, so put him on the vulnerable contenders list. RETEKO - Tough to put any money on this gelding on the top end. Likes to hit the board though. If this contest shapes up right, all the speedballs will force a ferocious speed battle early. Too bad this equine is one of those front runners. THINGAMABOB - I don't see this horse doing too much off of the very long layoff. He probably needs a start or two to get back into good shape.
