Jeremy Plonk: Oaklawn $53K Pick 6 Carryover Analysis for Thursday

    by Jeremy Plonk

Oaklawn’s pick 6 carryover has reached a tempting $53,697 to start the racing week on Thursday. It coincides with the “Lucky Strides” promotion this March at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet – which offers a $10 bonus when you bet $100 or more at select tracks each Tuesday and Thursday. Oaklawn will be the track spotlighted for this Thursday.

A pick 6 carryover with a $1 base bet awaits. Let’s get to work.

Oaklawn Race 4: maiden claiming (3:03 pm ET)

Favorites win 35% this season in Oaklawn maiden claimers, and the morning line choices #11 Mr. Goodtime and #9 Wilberton both should factor – the former just missing vs. similar in his debut, the latter dropping in class to an appropriate level. But #2 A Wild Posse intrigues most at a 10-1 ML price. Trainer Ray Ashford Jr. is 8: 3-1-0 at the meet with maiden claimers and note this one’s debut fourth at Remington saw the runner-up come back to win 2 stakes and finish third in the Springboard Mile.

Oaklawn Race 5: allowance / optional claiming

#2 Zeus’s Echo and #5 Swung have been chasing Oscar’s Hope in separate starts and that stakes player gives them definite strength of schedule upon which to draw. Neither would be a surprise and both capable of being a threat to 6-5 morning line favorite #6 Stradale, who faced a couple of ballyhooed juveniles last year in Boyd and Napoleon Solo. Hard to get past this trio.

Oaklawn Race 6: maiden special weightX

Put extra replay study into this one with common rivals from Feb. 5 and Feb. 8 races in re-matches. The Feb. 8 appears decidedly stronger, and #2 Rockin Robin figures to move forward with a cleaner trip and great draw saving all the ground, while #9 Dare Gently should be finishing best from slightly farther back.

Oaklawn Race 7: Equibase ratings handicap

All eyes will be on even-money morning line favorite #1 Saudi Crown in his first start since June. The Grade 1 winner has run extremely well fresh in the past and has had 6 perfectly spaced workouts for the 2026 unveiling. He’s rail speed and if you’re going to beat him, look for a finisher to benefit from a potential duel and rust. That’s where I’ll try to separate from the public. #9 WInnemac Avenue got a big 102 BRIS late pace figure last out and is 6-12 in the exacta locally. He’s 12-1 ML and interesting in all the exotics as well. I also like 10-1 ML shot #3 American Law, who ran a bang-up third in the Fifth Season after the track had been closed and a Fair Grounds shipper took advantage to win it. Jockey Cristan Torres has been awesome at 1-1/16 miles this meet with 27% wins.

Oaklawn Race 8: allowance / optional claiming

#1 Stiglets (4-5 ML favorite) will be strongly backed off a blowout win Jan. 3. But he’s 2-15 lifetime and could get pace pressure. His best for in ’24 and ’25 can deeper into his form cycle, so I’ll try to beat him after a 2-month break. #2 Vital Mind is 4-1 ML and note jockey Erik Asmussen has been a plus-ROI jockey with a 22% win rate in 6-furlong sprints at the Oaklawn meet. This one was second-best to Stiglets in that Jan. 3 race, has since run back and won and could get pace help. He’s the play, but I’m including #4 Linzer, whose trainer Cipriano Contreras is a wicked 9: 5-0-2 over the last 2 weeks. That one’s 10-1 ML.

    Oaklawn Race 9: maiden claiming

Arkansas-bred maiden claimers going 1-1/16 miles don’t inspire a lot of form. The Feb. 20 race won wire-to-wire by Markansas is where I settled on #1 Willy Cuts (2-1 ML) and #7 Gray Taps (10-1 ML). The former benefits from a more favorable draw after finishing second as the favorite. The latter was hard-used from the far outside last time and paid the price in the lane. Trainer Randy Morse has been red hot with a 17: 4-4-1 record the past 2 weeks and it would be no surprise to see this one improve. If budget allows or looking for a horse in the intra-race exotics, #4 Mandatory Mission is 15-1 ML and Cristian Torres’ 27% prowess in these 1-1/16 miles races makes for a major jockey improvement – albeit the horse has shown no speed to date.

    The Ticket

    2,11,9 with 6,2,5 with 2,9 with 9,3 with 2,4 with 1,7 = $144 for $1

      BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

      Charles Town - Race #2
#4 Direct Diamond She's in for a tag for the first time while also making her first two-turn try tonight, but she seems likely to be quick enough to sit up on the splits in a race with a few other forward players but not a ton of confirmed front-end pace. Maybe the more leisurely tempo wakes her up.
#5 Honey I'm Broke Wonder if that two-back run was mostly a fluke, but she's a handful here if she gets anywhere close to it. Not sure what to make of her, but I wouldn't find the 2/1 ML offering particularly appealing.
#3 Misty Isle She has shown mild ability to get past horses and makes her first start in claiming company, but she's meeting a few horses who have already handled her when they met at the special-weight level. Obviously capable, but tough to trust.
Race Summary Direct Diamond owns a couple of sprint races that are among the better lines on the page, and this short two-turn trip might be up her alley while racing in close range throughout.
      Charles Town - Race #6
#3 My Max He has some room to rebound while turning back to a one-turn run, and he might find an OK kind of spying spot while just off the quicker players.
#4 Legendary Sky He's another cutback player with some appeal after hitting the top and failing to seal the deal going two turns last time around. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him handle these confidently.
#2 Fiber Rocks He was doomed by a bad break last time out, but he can be a handful if he finds something like the two-back run with a better getaway today.
Race Summary My Max might still have some upside in just this third start, and I think he's going to bring something better at this trip than he did in the career debut.
      Charles Town - Race #7
#4 Casa Juanita Her last was solid, and she has reliable enough spying form on the page to think she's going to get a good run of things. This trip is well within her scope while getting around two turns -- there is proven route form on her page. Tough today.
#6 Double Spirit She was just a touch flat last time out when third, but she has honest form and is quick enough to mix things up from the start. One of the ones.
#7 Gilda's Girl She has finished up with authority in the last two, and she's a clear danger right back if she's able to maintain that form again tonight.
Race Summary Casa Juanita might get the right kind of run with this group while getting the jump on the deepest finishers.

        FRANK CARULLI'S DAILY PICKS

        Penn National - Race #1
#2 SUNDAY GIFT (8-1) Fits condition well, projects dream trip in speed-laden field for new connections.
#6 DITHER (5-1) Ran 1-2 six times in 10 starts during $53k season in 2025, gets in light-weighted.
#5 MOBEER (12-1) Failed at 2-to-5 odds four months ago, worked recent :47 bullet for return.
Race Summary SUNDAY GIFT exits a top barn for his seasonal debut, but his numbers are strong, he is eligible for this condition by a week and he gets plenty of pace to rally into. Bet to win and place at a tempting morning-line price and play a 2-ALL exacta.
        Penn National - Race #3
#4 WHERE’S MY CHEW (4-1) Mild rally in fast-paced sprint at this level, solid route numbers prior.
#1 DARVESH (8-1) Winless in last 18 starts, but finished second in 3 of last 8 starts, use in exotics.
#3 BIRRAVINO BLVD (3-1) ‘Chew’ stablemate is the lone two-time winner at this distance.
Race Summary WHERE’S MY CHEW stretches back out in distance after he chased comparable fractions to a $10k/nw4 sprint and finished third at 5-1/2F. He earned minor awards against six-figure earner and stablemate Hope’s Alive and front-end repeater Renewing Vows in his prior two route attempts. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-4 exacta box.
        Penn National - Race #7
#1 RIDLEY PARK (Even) Plenty to like except the short price, doesn’t shy from photo-finish camera.
#4 DON’TLOSEMYMONEY (4-1 Earning plenty of money with nine consecutive in-the-money runs.
#5 CATIRE VIZCAYA (10-1) Improved in second try under these conditions on muddy track at Parx.
Race Summary RIDLEY PARK looks good on paper, finished in photo finishes the last four times Rodriguez was aboard and won in his second start off a layoff early last year. Bet to win and place and play 1-4 and 1-5 exactas.

                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 7 FAKE SMART 7/2
                  # 2 COLT FORTY SEVEN 8/1
                  # 6 HIGH GO 8/1
FAKE SMART has a very good shot to take this race. This colt with Ortiz in the saddle makes him a definite contender. Ought to be carefully examined in this contest if only for the respectable Equibase Speed Figure recorded in the last race. Shows signs of the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 69 Equibase speed fig which is one of the best in this group. COLT FORTY SEVEN - Appears to be the type to be helped on Lasix here. Has been running admirably and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. HIGH GO - Walsh has a strong win percentage with horses racing in dirt route races. Should be carefully examined - I like the figs from the last race.

                    Penn National - Race #4 - Post: 7:12pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 63

                    Rating:

                    #2 MARGO'S MARGARITA (ML=5/1)

MARGO'S MARGARITA - When Cora and Fields combine forces on horses the ROI has been fantastic at +41.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 LOVE AND KISSES (ML=2/1), #3 SILJIM (ML=3/1), #4 SAINT GRACE (ML=7/2),

LOVE AND KISSES - This morning-line favorite hasn't been to the track in awhile. No works since last race. This animal hasn't been around in either of her last two outings. SILJIM - Tough to wager on any entrant in a short distance event at 3/1 when she hasn't shown any on the board results in sprints in the last two months. In the last race this steed finished fifth. Doesn't bode well for her chances this time. SAINT GRACE - I'd like to see more conducive recent efforts with M/L odds of 7/2. Hasn't hit the board in any short distance affairs lately. Unlikely to see her doing it this time around either.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 MARGO'S MARGARITA is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better

                      Oaklawn Park - Race #9 - Post: 4:38pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $57,000 Class Rating: 68

                      Rating:

                      #1 WILLY CUTS (ML=2/1)
                      #7 GRAY TAPS (ML=10/1)

WILLY CUTS - The jockey and conditioner combination have a positive return on investment when they team up. Cunningham brings him back again. I suggest you stick with this strong gelding. Ranked at the top of the list in (EPS) earnings per start. Another indicator that this horse has the class to take this race. GRAY TAPS - I expect this race horse to stun some railbirds this time around.

Vulnerable Contenders: #9 MR FAHRENHEIT (ML=5/2), #5 TAKEN ON THE RUN (ML=7/2), #2 PEARCY ROAD (ML=8/1),

MR FAHRENHEIT - The fourth place finish in the last race coming after the very long layoff is surely not a good omen. TAKEN ON THE RUN - When scrutinizing today's class rating, he will have to garner a better speed rating than in the last race to battle in this dirt route. PEARCY ROAD - Tough to put any money on this gelding on the win end. Likes to end up on the board though. Recorded a somewhat easily forgotten fig last time around the track in a $20,000 Maiden Claiming race on February 16th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that figure.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 WILLY CUTS to win at post-time odds of 7/5 or better

                        # 4 TEN PLUS 3/1
My choice in this race is LAST EAGLE V. He should be given a shot given the strong speed figs. Has been running solidly lately and ought to be up near the lead early on. Had one of the most competitive Equibase Speed Figs of this group of animals in his last affair. NXS - Could best this group of animals based on the speed figure - 81 - of his last effort. TEN PLUS - His 76 average has this gelding with among the strongest Equibase Speed Figures in this race. He has garnered respectable figures under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well versus this group of animals.

After thorough analysis by the panel of smart guys, TELLS BELLS comes out as the top selection. The number crunching team saw this horse's name on a restaurant menu. Call it our coffee house play, worth a small wager. Her 70 average has this mare among the best TrackMaster Speed Ratings in here. Certainly should be given a look based on the very good speed rating achieved in the most recent gathering.CAUGHTSTEALINGHOME - This solid standardbred could get the win here beginning from the Flamboro Downs 5 position. This entrant looks very good considering the high class figures. Don't toss out of any exotics. JOB HUNTER - Many handicappers know speed is is such an important factor. This harness racer has credentials with a 73 average statistic. Good for a win wager just off the fantastic prior class ratings. Have to like this harness racer.

All signs point to PHOTOBOMBR HANOVER for the contender. Overall rankings appear very nice. Can't throw out at this point. The knowledge group keenly points out that when Dibenedetto drives this solid standardbred, the odds of finishing top 3 go way up. SCOOTNROLL - The consortium can't help but love this interesting entrant because the internal pace statistics fit well here at Monticello Raceway. Take a good long look at making this horse your win wager based on well above average win clip alone. MIKI DE VIE - If effort in the most recent gathering is representative, this horse will have a very great shot for this one. High last race speed figure. Looks like a strong pick in this group of animals and his positive winning percentage says he has the desire to take the whole enchilada this time.
