Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita $67,798 Pick Six Carryover Analysis | Sunday, March 8, 2026

Carryovers have been plentiful lately at the Great Race Place and that continues on Sunday afternoon where there will be a carryover of $67,798 in the $2 Pick 6. Challenging results on Big Cap Day led us here. Let’s see if we can’t piece the final 6 races of the week together after a fun, but frustrating Saturday in Arcadia.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

Race 4:
Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 5 Re Armed Jon; 2 Smart Code; 3 Gregory’s Pride
Backups: 6 Spearfish

Forecast: A challenging starter allowance at 6.5-furlongs over the sod kicks things off where I do not trust 9-5-ML favorite #7 Incanto. The 4YO gelding ships in from Florida for Peter Eurton after having competed against better over his last several starts. On paper the Irish-bred looks like the one to beat, but Eurton is winless at Santa Anita Park over the last 30 days. I will try to beat him and stablemate #4 Vancougar with a few, but admittedly with not a lot of confidence in any particular runner.

Race 5:
Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 6 Magic Connection; 2 Scatify
Backups: 7 Novinophobia

Forecast: Up next is this $10k N2L at 6-furlongs where once again the morning line favorite is difficult to fully trust. #2 Scatify is winless since his debut at Los Alamitos in December ’23. He made his last start on December 29 against first-level allowance foes and was absolutely terrible after finding a great early spot off the early leaders. That said, this is a massive drop for a barn that is 5 for 42 over the last 20 days, so unlike the Eurton duo in Race 4, he is almost impossible to toss. I will use the chalk along with a pair of runners that exit the February 7 race at this same level.

Race 6:
Grade: B
Main Ticket: 4 Berlin Wall
Backups: None

Forecast: I will take a stand in this first-level allowance against 2-1-ML favorite #5 Voldemort with Cal-bred #4 Berlin Wall. The Practical Joke colt has done little wrong throughout his career outside of running sixth in the Malibu (G1) at 36-1 and running somewhat poorly on the grass in January. Trainer Steve Knapp moved the 4YO colt back to the dirt last time and he delivered with a big run in his first effort around two-turns. He finished extremely well versus lesser. Hopefully, he can once again stalk early and pull away late under regular rider Tiago Pereira.

Race 7:
Grade: B
Main Ticket: 6 Ventry Strand; 8 Honey’s Choice
Backups: 3 Sammy Davis

Forecast: It has been a slow winter in Arcadia thus far for trainer John Sadler, but he holds a strong hand in this first-level allowance down the hill. #3 Sammy Davis makes his turf debut and was made the 9-5-ML favorite, while #6 Ventry Strand returns quickly to make his third start off the layoff. Sammy Davis could be the controlling speed and has the pedigree to take to the surface switch, but I prefer Ventry Strand. The son of Bolt d’Oro came with a strong run two-back to win going away against fellow Cal-breds before putting in another big late surge in his first try at a route of ground. He moves into the open company ranks for just the second time, but is in good form and should be rolling late at a playable price. I will also include #8 Honey’s Choice. The son of Liam’s Map tried sprinting for the initial time in mid-January and it resulted in an easy win. He draws favorably in his first start versus winners.

Race 8: Santa Ysabel (G3)
Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 3 French Blue; 5 Forced Entry
Backups: 4 Piney Woods

Forecast: Speaking of John Sadler, the veteran conditioner is hopeful Sunday’s feature marks a big bounce back for #6 Super Corredora. The 2025 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies’ winner competed against the flow in her return race last month, but that does not totally forgive her performance. It was enough for me to try to beat her at a short price in this spot with a trio of runners with upside, including top choice #3 French Blue. The Three Chimneys Farm homebred will need to take a big step forward to beat graded stakes foes in her first start against winners and at two-turns, but did everything right on debut. I expect her to make a strong account of herself and am hopeful from a gambling perspective that last year’s champ fails to fire her best shot once again.

Race 9:
Grade: B
Main Ticket: 7 Victorious Dream
Backups: 1 Sandy Street; 3 Lilo Lil

Forecast: I hope to get to the finale where I am absolutely against 2-1-ML favorite #6 Bint Al Dandy. The 5YO mare has burnt a ton of money through 7 starts in the States, often with little excuse. On paper, the Dandy Man mare appears the one to beat, but I will once again let her beat me. I like #7 Victorious Dream most. The European import makes her third start in North America after putting in a solid run to finish second to an odds-on favorite from the Phil D’Amato barn on January 24. She gets a huge rider upgrade to hot riding Juan Hernandez and should be finishing full of run on the turnback to one mile.

Santa Anita Park - Race #7

#1 Caro Buono	I'm probably biased because I've been chasing him a bit, but I really think he ran a winning race last time out and now turns back to a sprint trip while getting some class relief. I've liked him a lot at prices with better and would be happy to take something like the 5/1 ML offering on the drop on principle.
#3 Sammy Davis	Not much to argue about on his page, but he has been facing California-bred groups and is finding a tougher open bunch today. He looks like the controlling pace, too.
#5 Track Tiger	He's coming out of a couple of tough races and should be quick enough to keep Sammy Davis in his sights early. Winner of the last came back to handle the top choice in another stakes spot. In the mix.
Race Summary	Fun race here, and I think Caro Buono should be live on the drop. His last suggested he is in better form than it might appear at first glance, and I think this easier spot might allow him to wake up pretty fast.

Santa Anita Park - Race #8

#3 French Blue	She's probably going to take some cash as a reasonable alternative to the chalk, but I can't argue a lot -- she was live on the board in the debut, and she ran to it. Pedigree says more ground isn't going to be an issue.
#6 Super Corredora	Breeders' Cup winner is obviously capable of better than the fade job off the bench last time out, and that wasn't anybody's big goal. Expecting more today.
#4 Piney Woods	Riser stretches out while getting a class test, and she wasn't embarrassed by the top choice when they met in early January. On the tickets.
Race Summary	French Blue might be the right one to use to get past Super Corredora in this spot, though I also expect that one to bring something much better this afternoon.

Santa Anita Park - Race #9

#2 Improbable U	I like that she's back in special weight company off the dull run. Her form has some pretty solid names on it, and she can bounce back today at a better number.
#6 Bint Al Dandy	Wouldn't argue too hard if you landed here in what feels like a kind of mild race for the level, but even a quick glance at her page shows a nasty habit of coming up empty in the final call...anyone in the mood to outfinish her probably will. Tough read at what might not be a very appealing price.
#8 Lubie's Music	She makes sense here after a decent turf debut last time out, and maybe we haven't seen the best of her after just three starts. Mild move forward might do.
Race Summary	Improbable U probably isn't offering the 8/1 ML price, but I think she's a good lean here. There are sharp names on her page, and she has knocked on the door in those tougher spots.

1st race – (5) Halogen drops into a claimer for the first time and may like turf. (9) English Rocker could pose a late threat. (2) Iron ships in from California and is worth a look. (4) Swamp Fix may wake up here. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-4-5-9.

3rd race – (8) Bella Bello Bankermight prove best at this level. (5) Lien On Her looks like the one to fear. (3) Do I Look Worried may like the shorter distance. (6) Vanessa’s Wish could sneak into the picture. Betting strategy: 8 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-8.

5th race – (7) Bear Claw Necklacedisappointed last time but could rebound with a solid try here. (8) Sweet Lazarus has some speed and can hang around until the end. (10) Noble Prince belongs in the exotics. (1) McMullen will benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 7 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-7-8-10.

7th race – (1) Fancy Sailor was hurt by a wide trip when third in his debut. Should prevail from the rail. (8) Pay the Piper may improve with blinkers. (5) Al Yaqeen is an interesting firster from Pletcher. (4) Noble Heritage may be well-suited by turf. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-4-5-8.

10th race – (6) Boat’s a Rockin was fourth last time but may move forward off the David claim. (8) Cyclonite was second the last three times and can figure in the exacta again. (2) Front End put in a fast gate work for this. (3) Innate could work out a good trip here. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8.

4^th race [Md Sp Wt, 7F] – (5) Roger Roger since coming back from a layoff to start 2026 has hit the board in all three starts. (3) Pop Goes the Wiz ran an improved third in his second start behind the top pick. (4) Fateful Lightning returns from a December layoff when he was third in a maiden special weight at Aqueduct. (1) Frostelle ran his best career race when he showed speed in a maiden claimer and finished third last month.

5^th race [NY, Md 40000, 7F] – (4) Mach Schnell pressed the pace in his third start, finished third in what was his best race, and blinkers go on. (3) Twenty One Red dropped in to a maiden claimer for the first time and was second after racing on the lead. (5) Gallant One debuts for Pletcher and Repole with a bullet work showing as a $220,000 yearling purchase. (2) Classic Commanderdrops in for a tag as he changes barns since his trainer retired and blinkers come off.

6^th race [OC 75k/N2X, 6 ? F] – (4) Garamond returned from a six month layoff and ran second in a Tampa allowance for Chad Brown. We remember Garamond from his third in the Gotham (G3) last year. (1) Ranger Battalion won a first-level allowance at Aqueduct last month after several starts with similar speed figures. (3) Sacrosanct was a front-end winner following a short layoff two weeks ago. He won his first four starts against NY-breds with three stakes wins. (5) Toxic Gray has three second-place finishes in these second-level allowances.

7^th race [Alw 50000s, 1 1/8 mi] – (1) Awesome Empire won a $30,000 claimer by three lengths in the best race of his career. (2) Senegal won his last two starts moving from a $30,000 claimer to a starter allowance for NY-breds. (5) Kavanaugh won his last two races for $20,000 and was claimed from both of them. (4) House Unitedcomes back in seven days after running second from what was his eighth top three finish from 12 starts.

Best bets: Roger Roger (4^th); Garamond (6^th). Best Value: Mach Schnell (5^th); Awesome Empire (7^th).

This jockey and trainer have a profitable ROI when they combine forces. This horse has recorded the best recent turf speed rating at the distance/surface. TOO MUCH FUN - Marin comes to ride after getting to know the filly in the last affair. Finished 2nd, but easily 2nd over the third horse. Those types usually run well next time out. The last figure of 69 is the top last race figure in the group. MAGICA - Last out on the grass, this horse was solid. Anything close in this event, and this one should win. Trainer Arnett moves this horse down in class ranks to face weaker company. Look for a good effort with this class drop. A definite class advantage goes to this horse.
