Jeremy Plonk: Colonial Downs Bet $100, Get $10 Thursday Plays

The “Lucky Strides” promotion this March at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet offers a $10 bonus when you bet $100 or more at select tracks each Tuesday and Thursday. Opening Day of Colonial Downs’ 3-day Virginia Derby Meeting will be the track spotlighted for this Thursday. Here’s how I’ll approach that card with the help of the Betmix Angler database.

Colonial Downs: Race 4

#1 American Direction (9-2 morning line odds) has shown marked improvement since moving to dirt 2 starts back and note the success of Tampa Bay Downs shippers during last March’s short Colonial Downs stand, going 2-for-2 with a stakes win. Barn changes away from Mott and Clement are in play with this race’s 2 favorites, so they could be vulnerable. Win-place 1.


Colonial Downs: Race 8

#10 Boost (10-1 morning line odds) was well-backed in his local debut Sept. 1 when Wickedwithbourbon ran everyone into the ground and has gone on to become a stakes-placed sprinter at Fair Grounds. Trainer Robbie Bailes looks to have aimed this one for the comeback spot off a series of Fair Hill and Laurel drills. Bailes ran 5 horses here during the 2025 Colonial spring fling and had a winner and 2 seconds among those (including a 22-1 runner-up). Win-place 10.

1st race – (4) Jamaican Destiny was off slow and rallied for third in her debut. Wins at a longer distance here. (2) I Love Ines was second last time and can fill that role again. (1) Pom Pom drops considerably and has the rail. (9) Hope Town Girl could contend in her debut. Betting strategy: 4 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-4-9.

3rd race – (6) Value In the Cloudsmay appreciate the shorter distance. (3) Win N Win will welcome a return to Tapeta. (2) Skedaddling Home drops a notch and should be a contender. (8) Mo Rapido could make an impact in his debut. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-6-8.

5th race – (3) Elenique had some trouble when fourth last time. Makes amends here. (5) Emerald Ember was second in her debut, but has not raced since May. (6) Senta Says comes off a promising debut but faces tougher. (8) Viking Quest should be a factor throughout. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 3-5-6-8.

7th race – (1) The Dove Rules returns to Tapeta and can work out a winning trip from the rail. (3) Waittilmidnitehour was a game second last time and might do it again. (5) My Perfect deserves attention off the David claim. (4) Money Magnettes has won two in a row but is a newcomer to Tapeta. Betting strategy: 1 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-3-4-5.

9th race – (2) Dry Powder is Grade 1-placed and has a class edge here. (4) Her Town exits a sharp allowance win and should be the main competition. (3) Velvet Vortex may benefit from a comeback try and perk up here. (6) Sudden Switch will be happy to be back on dirt. Betting strategy: 2 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-6.

2^nd race [Moc 75000C, 1 mi] – (5) Celestial Body made her second start last month following a short layoff, dropped down to this claiming level, pressed the pace to get the lead, but missed the win by a neck. (4) Good Graces will make her first start for George Weaver who has a 24% win number with debut runners. (3) It’s Carol’s Way gets blinkers on in her second start for a new trainer with a pair of top three finishes showing in Aqueduct maiden special weights. (1) Lucky Lucky Me has a third-place showing in an unrestricted maiden claimer.

5^th race [Clm 12500 N2L, 1 mi] – (2) Spirit of Esther missed by a nose at this level after rallying to get the lead then tried a starter allowance. (5) Rogue Justice was a maiden winner for a $20,000 tag in her second start after getting claimed and gets placed in a winning spot. (3) Rose Lisa was a winner against NY-breds in a $40,000 maiden claimer. (6) Cha Cha Wrendrops down to the lowest level of her career.

6^th race [NY, Alw 35000s, 6F] – (8) Capt Jax Parrow (A/C) was bet down from 9-2 to 5-2 and finished third just a half-length behind at this level when he checked while racing wide and then moved to the inside. (6) Apollo Code got claimed from a win for $25,000 and then was second twice in this kind of NY-bred starter allowance. (1) New York Scrappy got his third win two weeks ago in a $30,000 claimer against open company. (7) Mo for the King was second in his last two races and was claimed for $30,000 two races back and then moved to today’s type of race.

7^th race [Clm 16000, 1 mi] – (9) Suerte (D) was bet down from 34-1 to 22-1 and finished eighth after having won a $16,000 claimer the race before. (3) Stolen Base has been racing against much better and was a winner for $40,000 in June. Last seen he was third in a starter allowance in his second race after a layoff. (2) Hours in a Day returned from a layoff and ran twice for $20,000 and was third for the waiver for Linda Rice. (5) Secured Landing won an allowance last month at Penn National for Jamie Ness.

PRINCESS WOEJEE - The February 25th race at Turfway Park was at a class level of (80). Dropping down in the class scale considerably, so she should be in a good position to win. Danner has this horse running well coming into today. 3 strong speed figures in most recent events make me say this horse will be tough to beat in this race. RUNTOWN - This filly is very reliable, frequently finishing in the money. When Trejos and McGoey combine forces on equines the ROI has been fantastic at +285.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 HYLLA (ML=9/5), #3 KINDA KRAZY (ML=9/2), #6 WATCH ME SPARKLE (ML=5/1),

HYLLA - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint races recently. Not probable to see her doing it this time around either. Tough to wager on any mount like this that didn't land in the top three after the long layoff and comes right back. KINDA KRAZY - Recorded a substandard speed rating last time around the track in a $25,000 Maiden Claiming race on Feb 13th. Not likely to see an improved performance off of that number. WATCH ME SPARKLE - I find it hard to play any questionable contender in a sprint event if she hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last 60 days. A bit of a lackluster effort when this filly finished third.
