Frank Carulli: Gulfstream Park Pick 3 Analysis | Friday, March 20, 2026

Gulfstream Park’s Championship Meet runs until the end of the month. The 10-race card this Friday, March 20, features four turf races with a $40,000 purse or more, two as part of a $1 Pick 3 wager to end the day. Here’s a closer look:

GP 8th race (4:24 p.m. EST) -- YOU BE THE JUDGE adds blinkers for her first start this year – and she will have to keep wicked fast stablemate BRITTANY’S WAY and Wesley Ward-trained returnee BLACKFOOT DAISY in her sights to have an upset chance in this $35,000 claimer at 5-1/2F on the lawn. But she finished a troubled third in her only turf start last year won by stakes-placed turf sprinter Shotgun Wedding, shows a series of strong workouts for her return and should be used in the leadoff leg of the Bet 3. AERIALIST led clear after a half mile in three of her last four starts on turf, holding on only for her maiden victory. But she changed tactics last out and escaped a stretch traffic jam to finish well from off the pace, a move that comes in handy today.

GP 9th race (4:55 p.m. EST) -- COPERNIUM broke sharp, tracked the 8-5 pace setter to the stretch and kicked away with authority in a suspect field that got him eligible for this spot. He holds a tactical advantage over his main rivals as he looks to go 3-for-3 in non-stakes races. It doesn’t hurt that new trainer Carlos David is 9-for-31 off the claim in the last five months. WIN N JUICE spent his 2-year-old season in stakes company, save for his MSW win on the Gulfstream lawn. He chased and gave way on the surface switch in his seasonal debut, but he finished behind three six-figure earners and a next-out, 29-1 allowance upsetter.

GP 10th race (5:25 p.m. EST) -- DAZZLING CRUISER maintained steady form for her new barn with a pair of seconds at this level, one on turf and the other on Gulfstream’s synthetic track. She rallied 4-wide on the turn two back and led inside the eighth pole, then saved ground last out after the winner was carried out on the first turn. EVELYN LOUISE won on the Gulfstream turf a year ago and was disqualified from her only win since then in a turf-to-dirt route at Horseshoe Indianapolis in the fall. But she impressed in that race, nonetheless, after she tried to get out on the first turn and bumped soundly with another rival at the top of the stretch, only to recover quickly with a determined rail run. Hoping she can return to her best form in her second start this year. MOONLIGHT PROMISES will take some catching in her second start this year. She posted an 81 Beyer speed figure in her 5F maiden win on the turf and sprinted clear in her only start beyond 6F in the race prior, leading until the favorite caught up late at 7F.

Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Spot Plays | Friday, March 20, 2026

The racing week at Santa Anita Park kicks off Friday afternoon at 4 pm ET / 1 pm PT. The 8-race slate is headlined by a pair of state-bred first-level allowance events over the main track. Here are the horses I plan to build my day around in Arcadia.


Race 2:
My first spot play of the racing week out west comes in this state-bred $50k maiden claimer over the main track where I landed on #8 Hungover. The Halladay gelding debuted at this same level on February 28 for trainer Ryan Hanson. The 3YO gelding was beaten out of his inside draw in that initial try, but moved up to find a pocket spot just off the pace of the eventual gate-to-wire winner. Hungover remained along the inside throughout, was in tight a good deal of the way, and was looking for room throughout much of the stretch drive. I am not sure how much horse the $23k FTD purchase had late, but it simply was not an easy voyage for a first-time starter to handle. Now, he remains at the same level, but moves to a more favorable outside draw after gaining invaluable racing experience last out. He should take a sizeable step forward in career start number 2.

Play: #8 Hungover (4-1 ML)


Race 6:
#8 Central Dispatch was made the 9-5-ML favorite in this open $25k claimer at 6-furlongs over the grass. The class dropper for trainer John Sadler should theoretically be primed for his best third off the layoff, but clearly seems to have lost a step when away from racing in 2025. The draw is favorable, but he is likely to get over bet. I will take my chances with 3-1-second choice #3 Mubtadaa. The 8YO gelding makes his first start since December ’24 for trainer Vladimir Cerin. Cerin has not started many runners at the Classic Meet, but has meant business with the ones he has sent out. In fact, he is 3 for 5 over the last 60 days at Santa Anita Park for an ROI of $2.96. It is likely the Holly and David Wilson owned runner has seen his best days, but was competitive when we saw him last. He will not have to be all that much to find his way back to the winner’s circle to kick off the late Pick 3.

Play: #3 Mubtadaa (3-1 ML)


Race 7:
I will ride a hot barn locally as well in this state-bred first-level allowance event at 5.5-furlongs where #5 Tiger in My Tank is listed at a fair 8-1-ML price. The son of Smiling Tiger was unable to hold off #1 Jaguar Jon last out in an open company allowance, but that came at the 6-furlong distance. The half-furlong may not seem like much, but it clearly has been a difference maker for this 5YO gelding evidenced by his 5 for 8-record at the distance. Add to the fact, he is sent out by hot training Librado Barocio and you have a runner capable of getting to the front and having enough left late at a solid ML offering. Kyle Frey will be back onboard the Mia Familia Racing Stable runner in the start of the late Double.

Santa Anita Park - Race #3

#6 Call Me Cory	Stretchout player ran well on the turf in the debut try and has the pace to be right up top with a good draw to prompt or press the other pace.
#2 Sabino Canyon	You could probably convince me to go up top with this one, as he's bringing a flashy enough series of works to this for a team that typically has their big players on the main track. Check him out on the tote and track.
#3 Post Game	Tactical speed is a bit short on excuses at this point, but he figures to be in a decent spot into the far turn while bringing a baseline effort that stacks up well. Wouldn't surprise, but I don't totally trust him.
Race Summary	Call Me Cory goes second off the layoff with some decent upside after the good main-track comeback, and he handled the turf nicely enough last year to think he'll at least bring something similar on the surface switch.

Santa Anita Park - Race #7

#1 Jaguar Jon	Think the price might be playable enough here, and his recent stuff has had him in the frame with some of the others in here. Should be in the frame from the start.
#7 Uncle Chilly	His reliable finishing form makes him a player here, but I worry that he needs just a touch softer crew than this to score. Wouldn't be a real shock, but might be more likely underneath.
#10 Spiritual Advisor	He drops out of that stakes spot with a handful of competitive-looking starts on his page, and he might be in line for a really nice kind of first-over trip.
Race Summary	Jaguar Jon has always done good work over the local footing, and his style gives his rider a couple of options if some other pace shows.

Santa Anita Park - Race #8

#9 Bitter Truth	She went evenly in the debut run and has some room to come forward with that race under her belt, and the addition of blinkers might put her in a slightly more involved spot early on today.
#2 Play for Me	She hasn't quite been able to punch home late in the two starts so far, but she has shown enough pace to think she's right there again with this group, and perhaps this third start will be her best yet?
#6 Celestial Skies	Her better form is in line with what might win this, but she's dropping back to a level she has already tried before without success, so I wouldn't want any short kind of price.
Race Summary	Bitter Truth looks the part here with plenty of reasonable upside -- second start, addition of blinkers, great outside draw. Guessing it all lines up at something shorter than the 6/1 ML offering.

#9 OTHER LEVEL (3-1)	Starts fresh, gets Lasix, can maximize his speed with Zayas aboard.
#2 H ABARRIO (10-1)	Son of three-time Grade 1-placed router Gunnevera makes his first start.
#7 WITCHA WISH (5-2)	Reunited with Irad, who coaxed a long-distance third from him for $25k.
Race Summary	OTHER LEVEL is working forwardly for his return from a five-month layoff and could hold a decided tactical advantage as he exits the MSW ranks against Florida breds. He was heavily bet in the second half of his 2-year-old season and could break through with a front-end victory in his first start for a claiming tag. Bet to win and place and play 9-2 and 9-7 exactas.

Gulfstream Park - Race #2

#1 SING SING (9-2)	Proven turf miler gets favorable post switch in field that lacks speed.
#6 MISTER ABARRIO (9-5)	Averaged 80 Beyer in last eight turf starts, winning three with Husbands up.
#3 ONE MORE BREW (6-1)	Trainer’s lone first-off-the-claim turf starter since 2023 won at 6-1 March 12.
Race Summary	SING SING was well-beaten in a double ‘key’ race on Turfway Park’s all-weather track in his second start this year, but he has two photo-finish victories at one mile on the turf to summon and can control the pace from the rail. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-6 exacta box.

Gulfstream Park - Race #3

#3 DOGWOOD CROSSING (6-1)	Hoping equipment change can spark another win at nw/3 level.
#5 FRIOLENTO (2-1)	Quick move on turn to engage in a stretch-long duel that he won at 6-1/2F.
#2 FIGHTING WORDS (15-1)	Hit board in 6 of 13 sprints on a fast track, use in gimmicks.
Race Summary	DOGWOOD CROSSING already conquered the non-winners of 3 condition before he was claimed four starts ago. That says a lot, considering the field is a combined 1-for-37 since exiting the nw/2 ranks. Give him the nod at a good price with first-time blinkers. Bet to win and place and play a 3-5/2, 3, 5/ALL trifecta.

1^st race [Md Sp Wt, 1 mi] – (3) Growth Equity has a pair of second-place finishes for Chad Brown in July at Saratoga and then last month at Gulfstream Park behind High Camp who ran in the Virginia Derby. (2) Stream It had the lead and finished third at Aqueduct going a mile last month. (1) Steady Force has a series of workouts at Payson Park since December for his debut for Brown. (5) Fightforallegiance has four starts since October for Linda Rice.

3^rd race [Clm 25000 N2L, 6F] – (3) Cravings was claimed from a $35,000 maiden claiming win in November by Brad Cox and came back three weeks ago to miss by a nose in a $40,000 N2L claimer. (2) Clarividente won a $20,000 maiden in January and then was behind the top choice. (4) Belloro won a NY-bred maiden special weight in September, tried a few races that were too tough, and had to check at the start of that race with the top two in this field. (5) Power of Women easily won a $25,000 maiden with a front-end trip last month.

6^th race [R, Moc 75000C, 7F] – (4) Waitin’onasunnyday was second the whole race last month with first-time Lasix and now changes to the barn of Carlos Martin. (1) Kaz Briohad a third at this level in January after two starts on the turf and then moved back up to a maiden special weight. (7) Neigh Baby started his career by hitting the board three times and then after a four-month layoff came up empty. Blinkers go on. (5) First Blessing finished top three in his last three starts in maiden claimers.

8^th race [Md 20000, 7F] – (2) Counter Move dropped in for a tag for the first time on Dec. 31, set the pace, and finished third. He has six works prior to his return. (4) Into Inspiration pressed the pace and finished second in a similar spot three weeks ago. (1) Army Proud hit the board in his last three starts including last month in a similar spot. (8) Sounds Like Fun comes back from a June layoff when he was racing against better claimers for a trainer that can win after long layoffs.

Best bets: Cravings (3^rd); Counter Move (8^th). Best Value: Growth Equity (1^st); Waitn’onasunnyday (6^th).
