Scott Shapiro: Sunset Six $30K Carryover Analysis | Thursday, April 2, 2026

    by Scott Shapiro

The racing week at Santa Anita Park gets an early start meaning the Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 and Sunset Six do as well. That’s right, on Thursday racing occurs both in Hallandale Beach and Arcadia meaning the $30,568 carryover from Sunday in the Sunset Six will be live beginning at 3:47 eastern when Gulfstream Park’s seventh race commences.

But wait, Xpressbet and 1/ST BET are giving horseplayers an extra reason to play on Thursday afternoon. It is our new April promotion called “Blooming Bankrolls.” It occurs each Tuesday and Thursday and is simple. Just bet $100 on the select track listed on the promotional landing page and earn $10. The best news of all is Santa Anita Park is our select track for Thursday and we have opted to include Sunset Six wagers as part of the promotion making it a no brainer to get play with us! Here are my thoughts on the player friendly two-track wager that includes the last three races at both 1/ST Racing tracks.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    Race 7 Gulfstream Park:
    Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 1 Drama
    Backups: 3 All I Do

Forecast: The sequence gets started with this $17,500 claimer for 3YO fillies where #1 Drama was made the 7-5-ML favorite by oddsmaker Brian Nadeau. The Florida-bred drops in for a tag for the first time, draws the rail, and is likely the speed of the speed. She comes in off a runner-up effort to another horse that would be heavily favored in this spot making her the clear one to beat. If she loses though, it is likely to be a runner from off the pace that takes advantage of a contentious first half mile. #3 All I Do fits the profile. The Win Win Win filly makes her first start off the claim for trainer Jose D’Angelo. I am not sure she is good enough, but if they go fast early, she should be rallying late under Samy Camacho.

    Race 8 Gulfstream Park:
    Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 7 Losmastix
    Backups: 3 Bronze Bullet

Forecast: #3 Bronze Bullet is expected to be a significant favorite in this state-bred first-level allowance event at 5.5-furlongs over the all-weather. The Leinster colt is the class of the field and gets the best rider in Luis Saez, but perhaps 5.5-furlongs is a bit sharp for him after a pair of turf routes to kick off his 3YO season. I will use him as a backup since he is an obvious major player, but I prefer #7 Losmastix. Two-back the Antonio Sano trainee broke a bit slowly from the rail and was in catch up mode chasing a dominant odds-on winner. Then he moved off the inside and won going away. I love the outside draw for this colt that has hit the board in all four starts to begin his career.

    Race 9 Gulfstream Park:
    Grade: B+
Main Ticket: 2 Noche de Damas
    Backups: None

Forecast: I am going to take a stand in the sequence with #2 Noche de Damas in this optional claimer over the turf where I expect most horseplayers to go at least a couple deep. Combine that with her 9-2-ML price and it could really prove a worthwhile single. I like this Classic Empire filly moving back to the turf after a third-place finish last out over the all-weather. The William Tharrenos trainee put forth a strong late rally two-back in her lone start over the turf finishing second to a runner that would be favored in here. The pace has a chance to be contentious, which would bode extremely well for this late running Kentucky-bred. Jose Morelos will ride for the first time.

    Race 6 Santa Anita Park:
    Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 5 Army Man
    Backups: None

Forecast: From a strategic perspective it is probably wise to single in this first-level allowance over the turf unless you like one of the two prices in this compact group of five. Unfortunately, I do not and will opt to single #5 Army Man. The Florida-bred looks like lone speed to me assuming stablemate #1 Bust Out does not opt to go from his inside draw on the stretch out. The Michael McCarthy runner ran poorly last out in the Pasadena, but was a big price that afternoon after breaking his maiden two-back over this course. Emisael Jaramillo has had an outstanding first winter in Arcadia. I am confident he will be the aggressor in a race that also kicks off Santa Anita’s $3, 15% takeout late Pick 3.

    Race 7 Santa Anita Park:
    Grade: C
Main Ticket: 3 Bolt Supremacy; 1 Magic Connection; 7 Novinophobia
    Backups: None

Forecast: I lack a strong opinion other in this non-winners of two claimer over the main track other than I am not willing to single likeliest winner #1 Magic Connection. This son of Connect has finished second in back-to-back starts at this level, so he is the logical one to break through for his second win, but he certainly had a fair chance in his last two. Hopefully, #3 Bolt Supremacy bounces back off being eased in a grass race last out. The fact he is back quickly suggests all is fine.

    Race 8 Santa Anita Park:
    Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 2 Robin With a Why
Backups: 3 Sensational Dream; 4 We Salute You; 7 Kitty Mauren; 6 Queen Kimba

Forecast: I am fading 7-5-ML favorite #5 Bint Al Dandy in the finale. The 5YO mare drops in for a tag for the first time after having several chances with good trips as the favorite against better. There is no doubt she is capable of besting these off the drop, but I simply do not trust her to seal the deal until she proves she can. #2 Robin With a Why is the one I like most. She also drops in for a tag for the first time and adds blinkers for the first time. I am hopeful jockey Edwin Maldonado can get more speed out of this gal. If so, I think she gets the jump on the chalk and finds a way against a modest group. If not, it is anyone’s race.

      BRIAN W. SPENCER'S DAILY PICKS

Santa Anita Park - Race #3
#4 Zihnal He's probably going to take a little cash off the sharp drills for a capable team, but I'm hoping a few other horses with some big-name connections and/or decent form might keep the price fair. Check him out on the tote and track.
#1 Plagarist The first route run wasn't all bad, and that could set him up for something better today while going long for the second time. Winner of the last was no threat in the Louisiana Derby his next time out, but I'm not sure that's any kind of real indictment of the form here.
#2 Memory Guessing he's meant for better here after a forgettable sprint debut, but I'd also be hesitant to sign on at anything like the 3/1 ML price. Obviously he can reverse form for a top team, I'm just not all that inspired and will let him prove it.
Race Summary Think this is a fun race -- #6 Authentic Patriot and #3 Silent Way both have a reasonable claim on this, too. That said, Zihnal looks to be coming into this with a head full of steam and is bred to love this mile.
Santa Anita Park - Race #5
#2 King's Ride He was along too late in the debut on the turf, but there is some reasonable upside in this second start while moving over to the main track, and I'm not really sold on the depth of this race for the local statebred level.
#6 Matt at Five He probably hits hard in here with that good debut run under his belt, and any kind of step forward from that one makes him the right one. Still, the price is likely to get short, and I wonder if the guy just outside of him might hook to his outside and bother him the whole way.
#1 Blame it on Jack Take a look at this one going first time out, as he's probably not going to have to be a star to grab a piece of this right out of the box.
Race Summary King's Ride might be the right alternative to the likely chalk, as he'll try the main track with a decent finishing run on his page from the turf debut.
Santa Anita Park - Race #8
#3 Sensational Dream Don't trust most of them in here -- including her -- but she has at least shown a touch of finishing ability in a couple of those races, and her form is darkened by a few flat route runs. Isolate the sprint form and she's right there.
#5 Bint Al Dandy Beat her to score. She's dropping in for a tag for the first time, but I really worry about the way she tends to give away ground in the stretch call of her races. She might drill these on the drop if she clears in the lane, but I think she's vulnerable to getting picked up late again.
#8 Tulavia's World Would want her on at least a backup/stretch play, as she didn't have the cleanest go last time out when trying the turf at this level for the first time, and she might find an OK spying trip from out here. Wouldn't put it past her to spring an upset.
Race Summary Sensational Dream might be just playable on the board thanks to generally inconsistent form, but her sprint tries have actually been pretty reliable and put her right there if she can bring that typical baseline.

              Turf Paradise - Race #7 - Post: 4:23pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 84

              Rating:

              #5 GARAVANI (ML=8/1)
              #4 RANDI RANDI RANDI (ML=6/1)

GARAVANI - Don't often see a positive return on investment like +20. This rider/trainer tandem has done well together over the last year. I know the barn is serious today. The filly gets Lasix for the first time. RANDI RANDI RANDI - This beautiful animal should be rumbling down the stretch.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #8 ISLAND JIVE (ML=2/1), #3 CHAINSAW CITY (ML=4/1), #1 HAPPY IS (ML=5/1),

ISLAND JIVE - This morning-line choice ran on Feb 28th and hasn't had a morning drill since. CHAINSAW CITY - This mare is always hitting the board, but just doesn't finish on top. Hard to bet on her on the top end. Not probable that the fig she earned on March 25th will be good enough in this event. HAPPY IS - Last performed on Mar 23rd at Turf Paradise, finishing eighth. Unlikely to move up off of that try today. You always think this horse has a shot to cross the finish line in first, but she comes up short regularly. When looking at today's Equibase class figure, she will have to notch a better speed figure than last time around the track to be competitive in this dirt route.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #5 GARAVANI to win. Have to have odds of at least 3/1 or better though

                # 3 EXINGTON 7/2
I've got to go with FIBONACCIS RIDE. Looks formidable for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in turf route races as of late. The quick return to the track points to a reliable effort today.MOTET - She has been travelling very well recently while recording strong speed figures. Must be considered - I like the figs from the last race. EXINGTON - The Equibase Speed Figure of 77 from her most recent contest looks strong in here. Investors get an edge when playing this handler in a turf route race.

                  #8 SUITEFOURFOURTHREE (ML=5/2)
                  #6 KAVA (ML=3/1)

SUITEFOURFOURTHREE - The last time she tried this distance she got a fig good enough to win this affair. Cedillo and Compton partnered together are a handicapper's friend. Ranked number 1 in EPS (earnings per start). Another indicator that this horse has class. KAVA - This mare is in superb physical condition right now. Finished second last time out and comes back rapidly. This is a fairly classic handicapping angle. Play a horse that finished second in a maiden race last time out but finished well ahead of the show horse. Recent speed ratings show strong pattern of improvement.

TIKIHUT - Hard to recommend any horse with decreasing speed ratings of 67/56/44. MIRACLE MINDED - Hard to put your cash on the win end of any animal that finishes second and third as regularly as this one does. Won't be easy for this animal to beat this group off of that last speed rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's Equibase class figure, so put her on the vulnerable contenders list. HONOR SOCIETY - Won't be easy for this thoroughbred to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Improbable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the questionable challengers list.

                    # 5 BEN FRANKLIN 8/5
                    # 2 CREW DRAGON 8/1
                    # 3 COLONEL CALIENTE 7/2
BEN FRANKLIN has a strong shot to take this race. Recorded a strong speed rating in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. With a nice class rating average of 96, has one of the strongest class advantages in this group. Has performed soundly lately in sprint races, posting a nifty 88 avg Equibase speed fig. CREW DRAGON - This pony should be bet upon at the expected high odds. Overall the speed figures of this equine look very strong in this affair. COLONEL CALIENTE - Players should probably take a good look at this one as this colt has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group of animals. Jockey's recent return on investment figures make this colt a very good bet.

The consensus here is that TENCARATGOLD is the one to beat. Could very well provide us a top prize based on good recent TrackMaster Speed Ratings - earning an avg of 71. A really strong class horse should not be be forgotten. With an average class rating of 69 all signs say this is the one to beat. Could beat this bunch, just look at the speed rating - 71 - from his most recent affair. ANGEL FLY AWAY - You have to like a horse that wins regularly, very high win figure. Has the makings of a profitable play, averaging a rather good 71 TrackMaster Speed Rating. RAM - Really liked this horse's last race. Ran a big 66 speed rating. Major contender. Always strong driver/trainer tandem. 28 percent winners when they team up to do work.

IMAREALROKNBUGATTI is the clear stand out bet in the eyes of the handicapping team. The consortium knows that speed is very important in harness racing. This horse will unlock our way to a nice win. There is a really good likelihood that this entrant will improve with the med change now going off Lasix. Has a huge shot in this event, if he can perform to his back racing class. ROCKIN REDBULL - Some trainers just fit better with certain contenders. That seems to be the case right here with Smith. A very nice wager. Most definitely think these two have some sort of connection going. De Long in the sulky means a great chance to get the win. FOX VALLEY TYREL - Certainly should be given a look based on the good speed rating recorded in the last affair.
