Jeremy Plonk: Keeneland Opening Friday Late Pick 4 Analysis

Keeneland opens its Spring Meet Friday with a couple of betting menu twists. I’ll focus on an old favorite here, the late pick 4. But also note wagering minimums have increased in the superfecta (now $0.50) and pick 3 (now $1), while the day’s final 3 races each card will comprise a $3 minimum late pick 3, piggybacking the popularity of the track’s $3 Keeneland Turf Pick 3 from recent seasons, which also continues this Spring.

Let’s get to work.

Race 7: Beaumont Stakes

#2 Just Bluffing steps up in class but looks fastest early off a pair of 6-furlong efforts. This stakes has been dominated by those adding distance and those near the front throughout its decade back on dirt – plus, Luis Saez is a maestro in 7-furlong sprints at Keeneland. Morning line favorite #3 Sneaky Good would be no surprise for a Brad Cox-Flavien Prat tandem that’s won 3 of the last 4 editions of the Beaumont.

Race 8: Transylvania Stakes

In a stakes where seasonal debuts have found the winner’s circle 7 times in the last 16 years, don’t be afraid of a come-backer. Well-drawn #3 Noble Dynasty really interests me for Bill Mott. His juvenile BRIS late pace figures are better than anything in this race has run this year going long on grass and it’s a field with floundering finishers. Love the 8-1 morning line price in a stakes in which favorites have lost 9 of the last 10 and 6 straight. Will make a gutsy single here, and if we’re right, we separate if able to beat one of the big favorites in the races surrounding this. Zig when they zag.

Race 9: Ashland Stakes

Crazy results are common in the Ashland over the past decade, so 4-5 morning line favorite #3 Zany may look best on paper, but few things are certain in this pitfall race. #4 French Fiction (9-2 ML) has pedigree to route and love Keeneland, speed to win twice easily sprinting at Oaklawn and a trainer in Mark Casse who upset this race at 9-1 last year. Upsets abound in the Ashland with 6 winners at 9-1 or more (average 15-1) in the last 10 spring editions on dirt. I respect Zany, but this is how we get an expanded return in the late pick 4 if we can nail this minor upsetter.

Race 10: maiden special weight

Outstanding depth to this race, and by not singling or adding cost by including short prices in other legs, we can spread our wings in this race. If we’re live to the finale, we’ll be sitting pretty with a limited investment This is a “bet a little to make a lot” ticket today. #9 Drop Shot (20-1 morning line) is my upset top pick and I’ll feather in a lengthy group of others behind him at minimal cost (just $1 per horse).

1^st race [Md 20000, 6F] – (3) Bengalese returned from a five-month layoff to set the pace and finished second when he dropped in class and moved from turf to dirt. (6) Khali’s Storm was last seen in June when she was second three times in a row against NY-breds. (2) Gran Judgement debuted at Turfway Park on the Tapeta in January and was fifth in a maiden special weight. (1) Combatant’s Song will make her third start in a month.

3^rd race [Moc 40000C, 1 mi] – (4) Who’s Your Zaddy (A) finished second in his debut far ahead of the rest of the field. (3) Judge Boushaywas third in his first start for Chad Brown in February in a NY-bred maiden special. (2) Sfumato raced once for Bill Mott six weeks ago in that same race as the second choice. (5) Mitolegayne set the pace in his first two starts at 5-2 and 2-1 in a $75,000 race.

5^th race [Md 20000, 1 mi] – (5) Yolohad an unsuccessful trip to Turfway and returns to Aqueduct where he was third and second. (4) So Vain was claimed for $20,000 by Linda Rice in January and came back to run second a month ago. (2) Flee was third behind the second choice in March. (6) Saratoga Sunset ran her best race two weeks ago when he set the pace and finished second for a $16,000 tag.

8^th race [Clm 10000, 1 mi] – (6) Texas Red Hot (B) had a very wide trip for the entire race going nine wide turning for home and finished second after rallying from last. (2) Skylanderwon at this level in February, was claimed, and ran third a week ago. (3) Aleah Aleah used his early speed to set the pace and finish third at this level. (7) Brew Pub pressed the pace two weeks ago and was a head behind the Hot List horse.

Best bets: Who’s Your Zaddy (3^rd); Yolo (5^th). Best Value: Bengalese (1^st); Texas Red Hot (8^th).

1st race – (6) Waggley is one of two Ward 2-year-olds in the opening race of the meet and he looks the better of the two. (2) Joe Joe Dude exits a bullet work for his debut. (8) Suspicions is the other Ward starter who merits respect. (7) Tigrado is an interesting son from a fast sire, Nashville. Betting strategy: 6 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-6-7-8.

5th race – (3) Arctic Beast ships in after a big stakes win at Aqueduct. (2) Knock It Off is 2-for-2 and highly capable of keeping that streak alive. (4) Trouble Calling has enough speed to hang around until the end. (7) Oscar’s Hope deserves some attention here. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 2-3-4-7.

7th race – Middle Ground Capital Beaumont Stakes (G2) - (3) Sneaky Good was third against top company last time and gets the nod here. (4) Kingsolver is working nicely for her comeback. (2) Just Bluffing could be the real deal in her stakes debut. (1) Coco Connect will benefit from a rail trip. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-4. Doubles: 1-2-3-4 with 4-5-7-10. Pick 3: 1-2-3-4 with 4-5-7-10 with 1-2-3-4.

8th race – UK Health Care Transylvania Stakes (G3) - (5) Street Beast should welcome a return to turf. (10) Honey Dutch was a sharp second last time and has enough speed to offset the post. (7) Remember Mamba has showed stakes potential in his two starts and two wins. (4) Attfield will be better suited by turf. Betting strategy: 5 to win, place. Exacta box: 4-5-7-10. Doubles: 4-5-7-10 with 1-2-3-4.

9th race – Central Bank Ashland (G1) - (3) Zany has been dominant in three straight wins and can handle this field. (4) French Friction looks like the one to fear. (1) Nycon has some late kick and belongs in the exotics. (2) Percy’s Bar loves this track and cannot be ignored despite making her 2026 debut. Betting strategy: 3 to win, place. Exacta box: 1-2-3-4.

TIZ SPEEDY - Entered last at Mahoning Valley Race Cour in a race with an Equibase class figure of 79. Dropping considerably in class rating today puts him in a solid position in this event. Popular angle - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. Should run big today. Ran a less than stellar race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour last time around the track. Racing on a non-sloppy track puts this gelding at the top of my contenders list. AGNELLO'S DREAM - Gelding is a few starts into a return to racing here. Should give a big performance today. You have to really like that last race figure, 60, which is the best last race speed figure of this bunch.

DAVID'S GEM - This questionable contender's record tells you not to bet on him as the favorite. This pony didn't do too much last out finishing third. Don't see any hint of any change in today's event. STATESBORO - Hard to recommend any equine with deteriorating speed ratings of 51/38/24. The sixth place finish last time out coming after the long layoff is surely not a healthy signal. ORB OF THE BORO - This gelding is always hitting the board, but just doesn't finish first. Difficult to bet on him on the front end.

My choice for this race is VIRAT. Will most likely come out solid - I have liked the way this gelding has moved quickly to the front end recently. Is tough not to look at given the company run in lately. With a strong 109 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. DROP UM - Could wake up with Lasix change (on Lasix) today. Is a solid choice - given the 105 speed figure from his most recent race.BALLADEER - With a sound 108 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest.

RESIDE - Franco rode this horse for the first time last time around the track and comes right back today. Looking at today's class rating, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier field than last time around the track at Aqueduct. Taking this jockey/handler combination is a smart move. Ranked number one in earnings per start. Another indicator that this animal is the class of the race. Look for this gelding to show lots better right here in this race. Last affair at Aqueduct finishing sixth in the mud is no indication of his true talent. MERCILESANIHILATOR - This horse is going to run 1 mile today for the very first time. A good thing since the trainer, Rice, has a great win percent stretching horses out.

When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch. NEVER SAY UNCLE - This animal hasn't been around in either of his last two outings. Should be difficult for this entrant to beat this field off of that last speed rating. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's class rating, so put him on the questionable contenders list.

RAY'S BLUE WAGON is my choice. With a very strong 84 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this contest. Entries trained by Shanley in dirt route races are usually strong. GAME KEEPER - Must be given a chance here on the basis of the figs in the speed realm alone. Ran a solid last race. DEADPAN - This gelding is a key contender based on his earnings per start in dirt route events. He has put up very good figures under today's conditions and ought to fare well versus this group.
