Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Wood Memorial at Aqueduct

    by Jeremy Plonk

The gang’s all here when it comes to Aqueduct prospects on the Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont Stakes path. The winners of the Grade 1 Champagne, Withers and Grade 3 Gotham all clash in a big field of 13 over 1-1/8 miles. The top-2 finishers likely punch their tickets to the first Saturday in May on qualifying points.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet take advantage of up to a $10 money-back special promo on Triple Crown prep race win bets, featuring Saturday’s Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, Blue Grass at Keeneland and the Santa Anita Derby. Get up to $10 back if your win bet finishes second or third when you bet with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet. Also play the $5,000 Exacta-Thon involving the Keeneland and Santa Anita full cards on Saturday.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Wood Memorial (Race 12):

#1-NAPOLEON SOLO: Grade 1 Champagne winner tired to fifth in Gulfstream’s Fountain of Youth Stakes in late February, his first start since October. Trainer Chad Summers and owner Gold Square LLC supplemented him to the Arkansas Derby last week, scratched and sought this spot in hoping to get back into the Kentucky Derby points discussion. Paco Lopez, who upset this race at 59-1 odds 3 years ago, rides the speedy son of Liam’s Map for the first time. Easy Goer in 1988-’89 was the last Champagne winner at add the Wood at age 3.

#2-TALK TO ME JIMMY: 11-length winner of the 1-1/8 miles Withers returns to the same track and distance for trainer Rudy Rodriguez. Modernist colt sprung 12-1 upset in the Withers and has won both starts since adding blinkers. Ruben Silvera has the return mount as Talk to Me Jimmy tries to become the first Withers winner to add the Wood Memorial since the former stakes was moved ahead on the calendar in 2012.

#3-RIGHT TO PARTY: Gotham Stakes third-place finisher stretches out around 2 turns for the first time. Maiden breaker Jan. 10 at the Big A has been bookended by losses to Iron Honor, who rematches again Saturday. $325,000 Constitution colt is trained by Kenny McPeek and will be ridden again by Christopher Elliott. Maternal grandson of Chimichurri, winner of the G3 Temped over this track in 2002. Right to Party is not Triple Crown-nominated.

#4-STEEL: Feb. 28 Gulfstream debut winner has been the morning workmate for last week’s Florida Derby third-place finisher Chief Wallabee. The Tapit colt could give Bill Mott a pair of chances in this year’s Kentucky Derby as he seeks to follow Sovereignty’s roses from a spring ago. Steel rallied from 10 lengths back to win by a nose at 18-1 odds in his only start. Half-brother to 2021 Kentucky Derby fourth-place finisher O Besos, who earned $760K. Mott won this race in 2024 with Resilience and 2019 with Tacitus.

#5-OCELLI: Maiden through 5 starts faded late in both the Sam F. Davis at Tampa Bay Downs and the Virginia Derby while making ill-timed middle moves. Trainer Whit Beckman takes the blinkers off as this $12,000 Connect colt remains ambitiously placed while making his first graded-stakes attempt. Company lines include successful sophomores Renegade, The Puma, Incredibolt and Reagan’s Honor. Aqueduct will be the fourth different track in the last 4 starts.

#6-MINORINCONVENIENCE: New York-bred won the Funny Cide to close the Saratoga meeting last summer and was runner-up upon his March 7 return in Aqueduct’s Gander. Mendelssohn colt was a $20K bargain having already earned $160K and now tries open company for the first time. Former jockey and Todd Pletcher assistant trainer Amelia Green looks for her first Triple Crown starter as head trainer.

#7-ALBUS: Entered and scratched from last Saturday’s Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park for this easier spot. Trainer Riley Mott already has Virginia Derby winner Incredibolt earmarked for Kentucky Derby 152 and looks to deepen his roster. Albus won his third-start maiden breaker at Tampa Bay Downs Feb. 27 in his only start this year. The $320K Yaupon colt bids in stakes company for the first time.

#8-COURTING: $5 million blueblood full brother to star mare Clairiere didn’t live up to the pedigree when out of the money in the Remsen and Risen Star. Todd Pletcher had mixed results last week, winning the Arkansas Derby (Renegade, Courting’s Palm Beach Downs workmate on March 13) while running fourth in the Florida Derby (Nearly). The trainer has won this race 7 times and an eighth would tie the all-time record of Triple Crown legend Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons. Blinkers come off after a poor showing when trying them for the first time in the Risen Star.

#9-BRAVARO: Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. upset the 2023 Wood Memorial with 59-1 shot Lord Miles and seeks a sequel. Bravaro adds blinkers for the first time following a fourth-place finish in Gulfstream’s Fountain of Youth and a runner-up in the Holy Bull over the same track. The New York-bred began his career 2-for-2 at Aqueduct last year, including a win in the Sleepy Hollow Stakes. Edwin Gonzalez comes north to ride for the first time.

#10-RED ZONE RUNNER: Romping winner of the City of Brotherly Love Stakes at his Parx home-base, this Practical Joke colt hits the road for his second start of 2026. Road-tripped to Laurel to run third in the Heft Stakes in December when under the care of Eric McClellan. Hugo Padilla now trains and top Parx pilot Mychel Sanchez sticks in the saddle.

#11-OTTINHO: Half-brother to the great Gun Runner is the first of 2 Chad Brown trainees in the lineup, joining Iron Honor. This one exits a third-place Withers finish, 11-1/2 lengths behind rematched rival Talk to Me Jimmy. Quality Road colt has won 1 of 3, a Dec. 31 Big A maiden route over the Wood Memorial distance. In fact, this will be his third straight 9-furlong start and adds blinkers for the first time. Brown won this race in 2021 (Risk Taking) and 2022 (eventual Preakness winner Early Voting). Dylan Davis takes the mount the first time.

#12-BUETANE: California-based colt has been a road warrior this spring, third in the Southwest at Oaklawn, fourth in Colonial Downs’ Virginia Derby and now a last-call effort in New York to make the Kentucky Derby. His luggage also includes a sticker from Saratoga last year when second in the Hopeful. Bob Baffert trains the $1.15 million Tiz the Law colt, who has won 1 of 5, his Del Mar debut last August. Martin Garcia will ride for the first time.

#13-IRON HONOR: Unbeaten Gotham Stakes winner has won both career starts with press-and-pounce styles around 1 turn at Aqueduct. The $475K colt by 2016 Kentucky Derby winner Nyquist has plenty of stamina in the pedigree but draws a difficult post. Trainer Chad Brown’s second shot in the race (alongside Ottinho) to earn a third Wood Memorial victory to go along with 2021 and 2022. Regular rider Manny Franco will be aboard Saturday. The last Gotham-Wood sweep was I Want Revenge in 2009.

Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Santa Anita Derby

      by Jeremy Plonk

Multiple-time Kentucky Derby-winning trainers Bob Baffert and Doug O’Neill offer a pair of prospects each in Saturday’s Grade 1 $500,000 Santa Anita Derby as they look to solidify potential returns to the first Saturday in May. Meanwhile, the top-3 finishers in the Grade 2 San Felipe Stakes are set for a re-match at The Great Race Place, while the Grade 1 American Pharoah winner awaits.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Santa Anita Derby (Race 10):

#1-CHEROKEE NATION: While it took 6 starts to break his maiden, the Feb. 27 romp by this $1.1 million Not This Time colt may have been worth the wait. It took the Kentucky Jockey Club and Robert B. Lewis Stakes fifth-place finisher into another speed stratosphere for Bob Baffert, who is poised for a record-padding tenth Santa Anita Derby title – a race he’s shockingly not won since 2019. Florent Geroux will ride for the first time.

#2-POTENTE: Baffert’s second of two Santa Anita Derby shots Saturday, Potente upset the San Felipe at 8-1 odds to increase his record to 2-for-2 lifetime. His pair of scores have come by less than 1 length in combined margin, showing a nose for the wire and an ability to win on the lead and from off the pace. The $2.4 million Into Mischief colt once again will be ridden by Juan Hernandez.

#3-VIRTRUVIAN MAN: First start of 2026 and first stakes bid for this Kentucky transplant who raced at all 5 of that state’s Thoroughbred venues during his freshman campaign. Doug O’Neill trains the Vino Rosso colt who has a Keeneland maiden victory topping his ledger. Antonio Fresu rides as O’Neill seeks a third Santa Anita Derby title.

#4-ROBUSTA: Doug O’Neill’s more-fancied chance to follow the Santa Anita Derby success of I’ll Have Another (2012) and Goldencents (2013), Robusta exits a narrow, runner-up finish in the San Fan Felipe. Assuredly will be the shortest price of his career after 67-1, 36-1, 24-1 and 70-1 offerings in his 4 prior starts, which include a Jan. 9 maiden score. Home-bred son of Accelerate for Calumet Farms will be ridden by regular pilot Emisael Jaramillo, who also guided Cherokee Nation to his maiden win last out.

#5-SO HAPPY: San Vicente Stakes winner captured his first 2 sprints but couldn’t sustain his speed in the 1-1/16 miles San Felipe when finishing third. The Mark Glatt trainee has a pedigree made for Churchill Downs if he can find the stamina to get there; he’s grandson to Kentucky Derby winner Super Saver and Breeders’ Cup Classic-at-CD winner Blame. Mike Smith has ridden in each start.

#6-START THE RIDE: Rallying Cal Cup Derby winner Jan. 17 at Santa Anita never got involved when a well-beaten sixth in the San Felipe. The Dan Blacker trainee was 26-1 that day and will need a big move forward under regular rider Armando Ayuso to turn the tables. Upstart colt will hope for a fast pace to help his late interest.

#7-INTREPIDO (pictured, #2 outside): Grade 1 American Pharoah Stakes winner over the Santa Anita surface at age 2, this Jeff Mullins trainee looks for a signature score at 3. His lone start this year was a narrow runner-up in the Robert B. Lewis Stakes in February and was put away by design to be freshened for the Santa Anita Derby. Maximus Mischief colt leads the field with $312,800. Mullins looks for his first SA Derby trophy since securing 3 straight from 2003-’05 (Buddy Gil, Castledale, Buzzard’s Bay).

Meet the Contenders: Saturday’s Blue Grass Stakes at Keeneland

        by Jeremy Plonk

The two-day opening weekend at Keeneland concludes in Saturday’s Race 11 finale with the $1.25 million Blue Grass. Only the Florida Derby has produced more Kentucky Derby winners than its 23, but it’s been since Street Sense in 2007 that the connection has been made – and unfathomably since Strike the Gold in 1991 that a horse has won the state’s two biggest races for the 3-year-old boys. The defection of Kentucky Derby Future Wager individual favorite Paladin due to injury has opened the door.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Blue Grass (Race 11):

#1-TALKIN: Trainer Danny Gargan won the Belmont 2 years ago with Dornoch, who finished fourth in the Blue Grass en route to his Triple Crown tests. He’s back with this son of 2018 Blue Grass winner Good Magic but will need a big move forward after failing to hit the board in the Remsen and Tampa Bay Derby. Talkin fired a bullet workout March 28 in Florida before heading north and will have Joel Rosario back in the saddle.

#2-CLASS PRESIDENT: Rebel Stakes winner has one of the signature scores in this field and looks to give Todd Pletcher a record-padding fifth Blue Grass Stakes victory. The son of Uncle Mo has won 2 of 3, finishing second to elite sprinter Solitude Dude in the Swale. His nose victory in the Rebel over Silent Tactic stood up on quality when that rival came back to be clearly second-best in the Arkansas Derby last week. John Velazquez rides.

#3-GREAT WHITE: Turfway winter warrior exits an upset victory in the John Battaglia Memorial on Feb. 21. Trainer John Ennis has pointed him for the Blue Grass since, while taking the same path as 2024 Blue Grass third-place finisher Epic Ride. Great White’s 2-for-3 mark includes surprises at 11-1 and 15-1 odds. Alex Achard remains aboard the gray Volatile gelding.

#4-REAGAN’S HONOR: Wire-to-wire Fair Grounds maiden and allowance winner in 2 starts this year has progressed rapidly and will be tested in a stakes for the first time. Trainer Cherie DeVaux already has Golden Tempo qualified to the Kentucky Derby on points and could add a second starter to her first foray for the roses. Jose Ortiz, who guided Good Magic to the 2018 Blue Grass crown, will pilot this Honor A.P. colt.

#5-CREOLE CHROME: Louisiana-bred could provide early pace after wiring a state-bred route stakes at Fair Grounds. Trainer Joe Sharp turns to Tyler Gaffalione for the first time on this Volatile colt. That rider scored the 2024 Blue Grass on late-running Sierra Leone, but this 3-for-4 former sprinter is expected to show opposite tactics.

#6-FURTHER ADO (pictured): Burst onto the scene during the Keeneland Fall Meet with a whopping 20-length maiden victory after a couple of modest showings at Saratoga last summer. He fulfilled that ascending promise by winning Churchill’s Grade 2 Kentucky Jockey Club Stakes in November and went into the winter as one of the Derby favorites for trainer Brad Cox. His Tampa Bay Derby second to The Puma looked better after that rival came back to run a strong runner-up in the Florida Derby. Irad Ortiz Jr. returns on this son of Gun Runner, sire of ’24 Blue Grass winner Sierra Leone.

#7-OCELLI: Reportedly will scratch in favor of the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

#8-MOONSTROCITY: Maiden will be outsider on the tote after a pair of unsuccessful attempts at Gulfstream on dirt and turf. Belmont Stakes-winning trainer Jena Antonucci takes a long shot to get back to the Triple Crown with this son of Tiz the Law, himself a Belmont Stakes winner. Jose Morelos has the call.

#9-OTTINO: Withers Stakes third-place finisher was cross-entered in the Wood Memorial in his New York winter base, but reportedly will scratch to contest the Blue Grass instead. Chad Brown, whose since-injured Paladin had been aimed here, looks to keep an even-year Blue Grass streak going after 2022’s victory by Zandon and the 2024 success of Sierra Leone. His other win in this race came in 2018 with Good Magic. Ottinho is 1-for-3 with his only victory coming at the 1-1/8 miles distance in play Saturday. Two-time reigning Eclipse Award-winning jockey Flavien Prat – who previously partnered here on Zandon – has the call.

Scott Shapiro: Kentucky Derby Prep Picks | Blue Grass, Santa Anita Derby, Wood Memorial

          by Scott Shapiro

We are down to two weekends of Triple Crown preps meaning there are just four more chances to take advantage of our two-month long Money Back Special promotion. I am sure most of you are registered and aware of the parameters, but for those checking in for the first time when the calendar turns April, it is simple. Register on the promotional landing page and get up to $10 back on your first Win bet if your horse finishes second or third. It is a big weekend of races that will almost finalize the Kentucky Derby starters, so let’s get to my plays.

Blue Grass (G1), Keeneland Race 11

The first of three 100-point to the winner races over less than a 90-minute time span is the traditional Keeneland Spring Meet Saturday headliner. The Blue Grass (G1) goes to post at 6:22 eastern where #6 Further Ado was listed as the morning line favorite. If he runs back to his massive maiden win over this racetrack last fall, he will be a tough customer, but we did not see that horse in his long-planned return in the Tampa Bay Derby (G3). Perhaps, he moves forward in his second try off the bench, but I am concerned we saw the best of him as a 2YO.

I love the chances of #2 Reagan’s Honor. The son of Honor A.P. did not take the standard approach on the Derby Trail, instead opting to run in an allowance for 3YOs+ after his wire-to-wire victory on January 17. Cherie DeVaux has given him the perfect amount of time to recover from his monster score in mid-February. I am expecting another big effort from the $140k Keeneland September 2022 purchase in his first start against stakes foes.

          Play: #4 Reagan’s Honor (5-2 ML)

Wood Memorial (G2), Aqueduct Race 12

The Wood is up twelve minutes later and unlike the Kentucky Derby, there looks to be a lot of speed signed on in the last edition of this race to be conducted at Aqueduct Race Track. The 9-furlong affair has two serious speed horses down on the inside in #1 Napoleon Solo and #2 Talk to Me Jimmy. With plenty of tactical speed types to the outside as well it should set things up for a closer. I am hopeful #5 Ocelli opts to run in this spot, not the Blue Grass because I really like his chances in New York. The son of Connect ran far better than looks in his sixth-place finish in the Virginia Derby after a less-than-ideal voyage in the Sam F. Davis. Perhaps, this colt is hard to ride or not the most athletic horse, but he has had things difficult in several of his races. The Whit Beckman trainee has raced against two of the four horses in my top tier for this year’s Run for the Roses and due to get the right setup. Joe Ramos is back onboard with the blinkers coming off for the first time in 2026.

          Play: Ocelli (20-1 ML)

Santa Anita Derby (G1), Santa Anita Race 10

The final Grade 1 on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is conducted at the Great Race Place at 7:46 eastern/4:46 local time. The featured event on a strong 12-race card has two Bob Baffert runners listed as the two ML choices. I am not sure #2 Potente will go favored over #1 Cherokee Nation, but only one of the two has the upside I am looking for. #2 Potente was all out to beat a modest group in the San Felipe (G2), while Cherokee Nation woke up and ran off the screen breaking his maiden against a field of 3YOs and up. I much prefer Cherokee Nation of the two, but expect him to get over bet, so will take a swing against both with #7 Intrepido. The son of Maximus Mischief makes his second start of the year after a runner-up effort in the Robert B. Lewis (G3) in January. He broke sharp and was part of the early pace that day, but with the outside draw and speed to his inside, I expect jockey Hector Berrios to opt to relax this ridgling a bit in the early stages. If he is able to do so, I think he should be full of run late. He should be a fair price. Hopefully, he runs back to his American Pharoah (G1) effort over this same surface.

          Play: #7 Intrepido (7-2 ML)

Race of the Week: Keeneland's Grade 1 Madison | Saturday, April 4, 2026

            by Jeremy Plonk

            The Lead:
Keeneland's massive Blue Grass Day Saturday card includes Kentucky Derby prospects and 4 undercard stakes. My strongest opinion in the preliminaries is a pace play in the 7-furlong Madison, which goes as Race 9 of 11.

Horseplayers be sure to take part $10 Money-Back Special on all Kentucky Derby preps this season with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet. That includes Saturday's Blue Grass at Keeneland, Wood at Aqueduct and the Santa Anita Derby. There's also a $5,000 Exacta-Thon this Saturday on the Keeneland and Santa Anita programs.

            Field Depth:
Grade 1 winner CLIQUOT is joined by Grade 2 winners MYSTIC LAKE, R DISASTER, PRAYING and GRAND JOB. ECLATANT and RAGTIME are Grade 3 winners, the latter G1-placed. On class it's a very even matchup considering CLICQUOT did her damage in 3-year-old restricted races.

            Pace:
Extremely hot. Win this on the front end vs. GRAND JOB, R DISASTER, PRAYING, MYSTIC LAKE and ECLATANT and you've run the gauntlet. A finisher should have a major chance at success.

            Our Eyes:
            Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

#1-ECLATANT: Returned from more than 7 months away with a razor-sharp Gulfstream allowance win and is set for the stakes re-rise. The 2025 Forward Gal winner may be best at GP, but her Keeneland allowance win during the ’24 Fall Meet always counts for something here. The Into Mischiefs excel in 7-furlong Keeneland stakes with a whopping 7 different winners. Getting Irad Ortiz Jr. for the first time won’t hurt the cause.

#2-STERLING SILVER: Blinkers go on this millionaire win machine with 11 victories and $1.4M banked. The New York-bred is proven in open company, but her 3: 0-0-0 local mark concerns given the horse-for-course nature that is Keeneland. She’s in consistently good form, so not sure why you make an equipment change on a 7-year-old with 38 trips to the post. Jose Ortiz rides for Anthony Margotta Jr.

#3-CLICQUOT: Grade 1 Cotillion winner makes her first start since a fourth-place effort in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff. Trainer Brendan Walsh comes off a big 2025 at Keeneland that included this filly’s maiden breaker in the Spring Meet over 7 furlongs. Track and trip are on her ledger, so can’t dismiss on the reduction in trip in a race that has a ton of speed otherwise. Flavien Prat rides.

#4-RAGTIME: Like Clicquot, she’s a 4-year-old returning off the bench and trimming the trip some after a third-place run in the 1-mile Chilukki. Her late-running sprint style was on display in winning the Dogwood and narrowly missing in Saratoga’s Test and Keeneland’s Raven Run. She’ll be flying late for Bill Mott and new rider John Velazquez with a big chance given the hot pace set-up.

#5-GRAND JOB: The faster early of the uncoupled Mott-trained pair, expect Gulfstream’s Inside Information winner to contest the front. The Justify mare has won 4 of 6 since departing Ireland in 2023, racing only a few times each season. Junior Alvarado hops off Ragtime and lands on her stablemate. Other pace pressure could tell the tale, however.

#6-R DISASTER: First of 2 Saffie Joseph Jr. trainees in the Madison, how can you fault a 14-for-16 mark in the exacta with 8 wins? She’s done it over multiple tracks sprinting so her first attempt at Keeneland may look a lot like the others. Tyler Gaffalione picks up the mount here, a Keeneland top-of-the-standings regular. She’ll be on or near the lead and it comes down to handling a ton of pressure over 7 furlongs, a little farther than her best.

#7-PRAYING: Keeneland sprint stakes veteran is back for her first start since fading in the Breeders’ Cup Filly & Mare Sprint at Del Mar. She won the Myrtlewood here in the ’24 Fall Meet and returned last fall to win the Grade 2 Thoroughbred Club of America over elders while just age 3. Robbie Medina puts Joel Rosario up as regular rider John Velazquez switches saddles to Ragtime on Saturday. She wants to be in the mix a length or two off the pacemakers, which could drag her along faster-than-desired in this particular scenario.

#8-MYSTIC LAKE: Another blistering pace player, the second Saffie Joseph Jr. charge in the Madison has won 6 of her last 7, the wins coming over 5 different tracks. She set the tone here last year and faded to fourth under Irad Ortiz Jr. She loses him to Eclatant and her recent pilot Flavien Prat to Clicquot, while picking up Luis Saez – who is a maestro in local 7-furlong races. Outside post may help with her early juice, but the overall pace pressure in this race is the biggest threat to all the speed.

            Most Likely Exotics Contender:
RAGTIME gets a great pace set-up and is 6-for-6 in the money lifetime including over the track and distance. Her long list of triple-digit BRIS Late Pace Figures really stand out against this expected race flow.

            Best Longshot Contender:
No huge prices projected, but 6-1 morning line on CLIQUOT certainly interests with 5-1 on the top choice.

            Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
$70 win RAGTIME. $20 exacta RAGTIME over CLIQUOT. $10 exacta CLIQUOT over RAGTIME.

Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Derby Day Full-Card Selections / Analysis | Saturday, April 4, 2026

              by Scott Shapiro

I cannot wait until Saturday when not only there are three massive Triple Crown preps, but great undercards across the country as well. Santa Anita Park offers one of those with a 12-race slate that kicks off at 12PM local time and includes four other stakes events. Let’s dive in!

Grade Descriptions: A= Highest Degree of Confidence, B= Solid Play, C= Least Preferred or Pass, X= Likely Winner but at odds probably too short to wager on.

              Race 1:
              Grade: B-
              Use: 8 Struck By Her; 2 Marjoram; 6 Will Happen;

Forecast: I loved #2 Marjoram’s debut at Churchill Downs over the off-track last November, but it is hard to want to push all-in on her in the opener. She has not raced since and now races over the lawn for the first time. If she takes to the surface, she is likely better than these, but a pair of fillies on the outside have the recency edge. #8 Struck By Her is the best proven finisher over the grass and #6 Will Happen is likely to get the jump on most of her rivals. I will use a few here to kick off a very playable early Pick 5.

              Race 2:
              Grade: B-
Use: 1 Comedy Town; 5 Crude Velocity

Forecast: This first-level allowance at 6.5-furlongs over the main track marks an interesting return spot for good looking debut winner #5 Crude Velocity. The Beau Liam colt was impressive besting a field of solid 3YO prospects last month despite a less-than-ideal voyage from his inside draw. The interesting part is he takes on older more seasoned horses in his second career start instead of opting to take on a field of fellow 3YOs. I prefer him to stablemate #7 March of Time, but will use the veteran #1 Comedy Town as well. The 8YO draws the rail, which is not ideal, but has won 8 of 40 career races. Experience has to be good for something.

              Race 3:
              Grade: A-
              Use: 1 Duke Silver

Forecast: I am not in love with the rail, but I absolutely love everything else about #1 Duke Silver in this MSW event for 3YOs over the main track. The son of Silver State commanded $335,000 at the OBS April 2025 sale, which is massive considering his sire stands for just $7500. He ran well in the same race Crude Velocity exits on Big Cap Day and meets a much softer field after gaining invaluable racing experience last out. If he avoids trouble from the rail, he should handle this field.

              Race 4: Echo Eddie
              Grade: B-
Use: 1 Galloping Ghost; 2 Fionello

Forecast: I am going to hope for serious separation from the public here in the horizontals with a pair of Cal-breds that hopefully get a big setup in this year’s $125,000 Echo Eddie. The 6.5-furlong affair has three runners in the compact group of six that like to be forwardly placed. If they go at it early, things could fall apart late. Many will use 3-2-ML favorite #4 Thirsty Rebel hoping he gets the perfect trip, but I am leery about his ability to settle off a hot pace as well. So, I will take a big swing with a pair of late runners drawn down on the inside.

              Race 5:
              Grade: C+
Use: 12 Kawazaki; 4 Zalamo; 6 Vantastic; 9 Hotrocket; 5 Jimmy Blue Jeans

Forecast: An absolutely wide-open $25k open claimer over the grass concludes the early Pick 5 and I lack a strong opinion unfortunately. I will use several in here with the hopes that the pace is contentious at the very least. If so, there are some intriguing off the pace options without question.

Race 6: Santa Anita Oaks (G2)
              Grade: X
              Use: 5 Meaning

Forecast: We will likely shall see how #5 Meaning stacks up nationally in the Kentucky Oaks (G1) on the first Saturday in May because not only does she look like the most talented filly in this year’s Santa Anita Oaks (G2), but also the one that should trip out. The Gun Runner filly’s only loss came when she finished fourth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1). I would be surprised if she loses, but her price is far too short at the same time.

              Race 7:
              Grade: C+
Use: 10 Big Vengeance; 3 Booked Clubhouse

Forecast: It is tough to be overconfident in any of the runners signed on to this MSW event over the grass for Cal-breds. #3 Booked Clubhouse is the most proven commodity. He has run out of room in his last two starts, but perhaps that is not coincidence. He may just lack a will to win. That said, those without racing experience do little for me in this spot, so I will use him and #10 Big Vengeance. The son of Mr. Big cuts back in distance and draws favorably to the outside. If he can get the jump on Booked Clubhouse and some of his other main rivals, he is capable of springing the upset.

              Race 8: Evening Jewel
              Grade: C+
Use: 5 Another Zero; 7 Mohaven; 3 Cecilia Street

Forecast: There is a decent chance this 6.5-furlong dash over the main track for Cal-bred 3YO fillies is bet like a two-horse race between #5 Another Zero and #7 Mohaven. Mohaven was made the even-money favorite, but I prefer the lighter raced Another Zero. The daughter of I’ll Have Another ran very well on debut to finish second and backed it up with a dominant win at odds-on in her second career start. She has unlimited upside at this point, but needs to avoid getting caught up in an early tussle. If they go fast upfront, perhaps #3 Cecilia Street can steal it with the last move. The Leonard Powell trainee moves back to the dirt and cuts back in distance after a third-place finish in the Cal Cup Oaks in mid-January off just 8 days rest. She is fully rested now and potentially primed for her best.

              Race 9:
              Grade: B
Use: 10 Prince Dolce; 8 King of Dragons
Forecast: The pace should be contentious at the very least in this state-bred first-level allowance event at one mile over the grass. #12 Call Me Sir and #8 King of Dragons were made the two ML favorites in a relatively wide-open race and both have the right running style to take advantage. That said, Call Me Sir has a challenging draw and has not won since October ’24. King of Dragons is a very difficult horse to ride, but I prefer his upside to Call Me Sir. I like #10 Prince Dolce most though. The son of Sir Prancealot is the best finisher in the field. I am not in love with the addition of blinkers by trainer Steve Knapp, but the veteran conditioner does sport a solid recent ROI when adding the shades for the first time. Hopefully, it helps Prince Dolce finish with intent instead of making him keener during the early stages.

              Race 10:
              Grade: B
Use: 7 Intrepido; 1 Cherokee Nation

Forecast: The final Grade 1 on the Road to the Kentucky Derby is conducted at the Great Race Place at 7:46 eastern/4:46 local time. The featured event on a strong 11-race card has two Bob Baffert runners listed as the two ML choices. I much prefer Cherokee Nation of the two, but expect him to get over bet, so will take a swing on top with #7 Intrepido.

              Race 11: Monrovia (G3)
              Grade: X
              Use: 1 Queen Maxima (pictured)

Forecast: I have no desire to take on 4-5-ML favorite #1 Queen Maxima in the final stakes race on the Santa Anita Derby Day menu. The 5YO mare returned in style in mid-January with a win in the Las Cinnegas (G3) and should have no issue getting to the wire first again assuming she can avoid trouble being down on the inside. She is not a great wager probably, but betting against her appears unwise as well.

              Race 12:
              Grade: B+
              Use: 11 Somerset West

Forecast: They saved one of my top plays of the day for the finale, which is fine by me! #11 Somerset West ran better than her fourth-place finish suggests on debut for the John Sadler barn. Not only was Sadler chilly at the time and not necessarily known for winning with first-time starters on the grass, but this filly was by far the one finishing best in that full field MSW field. I love the outside draw for this daughter of Kantharos. Hopefully, the experience helps her gate issues. Antonio Fresu will be the pilot this time around.

Jeremy Plonk: Keeneland Blue Grass Saturday Hit & Split Late Pick 4 Analysis

                by Jeremy Plonk

Saturday’s Keeneland late pick 4 has a $2,500 Hit & Split promotion when you bet with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet. The all-stakes sequence begins in Race 8 and concludes with the $1.25 million Blue Grass. Also note the $10 money-back special on the Race 11 Blue Grass. Get up to $10 back if your win bet finishes second or third.
                Let’s get to work.

                Race 8: Appalachian Stakes

#01 Imaginationthelady was 1 of an incredible 6 stakes winners last Fall Meet alone at Keeneland sired by Not This Time. Expect her to come back running over a course she’s liked. Her Brendan Walsh stablemate Lion Lake has the best BRIS late pace figures in the field and nailed #9 Sister Troienne on the line last time over a Gulfstream turf course that plays speedier than Keeneland’s. Give me the Walsh duo with Lion Lake the likely better price for intra-race bets.

                Race 9: Madison Stakes

Against the favorites here who project into a strong pace and heavily backing #4 Ragtime (5-1 ML) and Clicquot (6-1 ML). The series of triple-digit BRIS late pace figures for Ragtime should shine in the final yards. Speaking of pace figures, no less than 6 of these Madison entrants ran 100-plus BRIS early pace figs in their most-recent start, ensuring we will get a ton of pace to tackle.

                Race 10: Shakertown Stakes

My least confident of the late pick 4 races, I’ll get some coverage in this full-field turf sprint. #4 Yellow Card is well-drawn and has been on the road before with a strong second at Kentucky Downs last year. The Californian can play here at 10-1 ML. Also at a price is 15-1 ML offering #9 No Nay Hudson. You just don’t see that kind of price on Wesley Ward and Joel Rosario in Keeneland turf sprints, where they’re absolutely dominant, so expect the price to shorten. No Nay Hudson’s last 2 BRIS late pace figures are strong in this race comparatively. #2 My Boy Prince is equally good late on figs, a super-classy sort who will try not to get buried inside but is a major threat at 6-1 ML. Finally, #8 Litigation, the 4-1 lukewarm ML choice may be best of all on late pace figures, has won 3 of his last 4 for Brian Lynch, who won here opening day and is a stalwart in turf sprints. I wasn’t bullish on #12 Usually Wrong even with his string of victories of late, but the Fair Grounds sprinters were highly effective here opening day and I’m not going to spread this deep without using him.

                Race 11: Blue Grass Stakes

The favorites have total run of this race as #4 Reagan’s Honor will be up top with every chance to underscore his impressive allowance win at Fair Grounds. Morning line chalk #6 Further Ado would be absolutely no surprise for a Brad Cox barn that’s been on fire with 3YOs in recent weeks and this colt ran a career-best his only trip to Lexington. I just can’t see anyone else winning the Blue Grass. I was tempted to single Reagan’s Honor, but given the prices we have in the sequence, we can still get a strong return with Further Ado winning. Playing multiple tickets, use Reagan’s Honor on more of those.

                The Ticket:

                8,10 with 4,3 with 9,4,8,2,12 with 4,6 = $20 for each $0.50.

                  Apr. 03, 2026

By Bob Ehalt and Matt Shifman

                  Hot List Key:
                  A:
A preferred horse to watch B: Secondary horse to watch
*C: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 1st through 3rd
*D: Went down 2 or more betting notches and finished 4th or worst
                  * - 4 or more betting notches if 11-1 or more.

1st race – (6) Gethsemane turned in a nice maiden win and seems to be on the upswing. Gets the call here. (5) Quality Mischief has been racing in graded stakes and gets some class relief in this field. (2) Thailand has speed and could be tough to catch in a small field.

2nd race – (4) Deep Flame was a distant second in his debut but can get the win here. (8) Accost has not raced since August at Saratoga but seems primed for a solid try. (1) Buntus Foclora fits better here than in a stakes. (7) Gilded Bandit may appreciate the added distance.

3rd race - (4) Sippin Pretty looked good in a maiden win at Gulfstream and can handle this field. (6) Smell the Lillies has been away since June but has some interesting works. (5) Gena B ships in from Aqueduct off a sharp win. (2) Our Two Girls could be a late factor.

4th race – (2) Honfleur rallied fast but settled for second in her first try on turf and can make amends here. (3) Paseo was a troubled second last time and is the one to fear. (4) Call on Me was third in her debut and should be a factor once again. (8) Rune has early speed that could come in handy in this field.

5th race – (10) Praetor was a game second to Grande and looks best here. (12) U Devil You is usually in the mix. (2) Gate to Wire has graded stakes experience but has not raced since July. (5) Flying Liam cannot be ignored here.

6th race – (3) Shoot It True has not raced since finishing in a stakes back in October but is working forwardly for Ward. (8) Hey Bertie missed by a nose and is the one to fear. (4) Serving Time will benefit from a fast pace. (1) Rosato may be helped by a rail trip.

7th race - Commonwealth Stakes (G3) - (7) – Saudi Crown shortens up to 7 furlongs but has a big class edge. (2) Crazy Mason should be well suited by the 7 furlong distance. (5) National Identity has four straight wins and can stay on the winning track. (1) Be You has enough late kick to be in the mix.

8th race – Appalachian Stakes Presented by Japan Racing Association (G2) - (9) Sister Troiennewon five straight before missing by a head last time. Returns to winning form here. (8) Lion Lake beat the favorite last time and will be the main threat. (10) Imaginationthelady has been absent since the Breeders’ Cup but cannot be overlooked. (5) Kokomotion was third in a graded stakes and fits here.

9th race – Resolute Racing Madison Stakes (G1) - (5) Grand Job won impressively in a Gulfstream stakes and is working nicely since then. (6) R Disaster should control the pace but the seven furlongs is a question mark. (8) Mystic Lake has won 6 of 7 and cannot be ignored. (2) Sterling Silver is worth a look in this spot.

10th race – Valvoline Global Shakertown Stakes - (8) Litigation is in career best form and can notch a third straight win. (10) Rezasrolex was second to the top pick and is a gem of consistency. (12) Usually Wrong will have to do everything right to offset the outside post. (4) Yellow Card is an interesting Santa Anita shipper.

11th race – Toyota Blue Grass Stakes (G1) - (6) Further Ado was a game and determined second in his 3-year-old debut. Gets his needed Kentucky Derby points here. (3) Great White could be a factor if he transfers his form to dirt. (9) Ottinho had no chance against a runaway winner. Should be more competitive here. (4) Reagan’s Honor turned in a big effort in a starter race. Will he bounce?

(11) That’s Funnychanges barns after a January third at this level and a victory at $12,500 before that.

8th race [Alw 50000s, 1 mi] – (7) Awesome Empire (B) broke through the gate in a similar spot last month and lost all chance. (8) Turn and Count won for $50,000 but was disqualified to third in December. He moved to a starter allowance and had the lead but lost a stretch duel by a nose. (5) Morlock came back from a three-month layoff to finish second at this level after an easy maiden claiming score. (1) Cocktailsnkringlewas second for a $30,000 tag and then third moving up to a starter allowance.

9th race [Alw 83000 N1X, 7F] – (3) Pair of Socks (B) was first or second in his last five starts including a victory in a starter allowance followed by a close second at today’s level three weeks ago. The Maryland-bred will come to New York for the second time. (7) Immersive was a three-time Grade 1 winner as a 2-year-old with 5 wins from 7 races and two seconds. (6) Pashmina was third twice and fourth in starts in Kentucky Oaks qualifiers.

12th race [Wood Memorial (G2), 1 1/8 mi] – The Wood Memorial (G2) drew a field of thirteen 3-year-olds including nine horses that already have some Kentucky Derby points. They will vie for a purse of $750,000 and a share of the qualifying points of 100-50-25-15-10 which go to the top five eligible finishers. (2) Talk to Me Jimmy dominated the Withers field with an 11-length victory and is 1 of only 2 horses in the field with a win going the nine-furlong distance. (13) Iron Honor is undefeated in two starts that includes the Gotham (G3) on the Derby trail. (12) Buetane ran well in five starts at five different tracks with the last two on the Derby trail. Keeneland Select Pick of the Day | April 4, 2026

                      Apr. 03, 2026

Race 8 at Keeneland | Saturday, April 4 | Post Time 4:44 PM Eastern

Appalachian Stakes – Grade 2 | Purse $500,000 | One Mile on Turf | Fillies, Three Years Old

Top Win Contenders: Just Aloof (7), Imaginationthelady (11)

Other contenders: Faithful Departed (3), Counterbalance (11), Lion Lake (8), Sister Troienne (9)

Just Aloof (7) won both her races, with her second being the Grade 3 Jimmy Durante Stakes at Del Mar at the end of November, where she earned a career-best 95 Equibase Speed Figure. Her first win was in New York. Top trainer Chad Brown doesn’t send many horses to California, but he wanted to see what she could do. She has been off for three months since then, but Brown has won six out of 18 graded stakes races with horses returning from this kind of layoff. Prat is riding her for the first time, and Just Aloof is expected to improve and possibly remain unbeaten.

Imaginationthelady (11) also won a stakes race, the Grade 2 Jessamine Stakes last October at Keeneland in her second start, and like Just Aloof, this filly won her maiden race previously. In her third start, she competed in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Filly Turf Stakes, where she performed well with a career-best 103 figure, finishing fourth. Jockey Gaffalione is riding her for the first time. The jockey chose Imaginationthelady, also trained by trainer Brendan Walsh, over Lion Lake, who he rode for the win in the Herecomesthebride Stakes one month ago. Walsh has a 23% win rate with horses returning from layoffs, and Imaginationthelady can rebound at Keeneland.

Faithful Departed (3) has a chance to be part of the exacta and could win at high odds. She just missed by half a length, finishing second in the LaCombe Memorial Stakes on March 7, with an 89 figure where she was 35 to 1. In that race, she might have won if not for traffic in the last quarter mile, where she was fifth and had shifted from the inside to four wide, missing the win. In her last race, the rail was set out 21 feet, but today’s race will have the rail at zero, which benefits closers. Additionally, jockey Loveberry, who rode her for his only win, is returning to ride her after a different ride last out.

Counterbalance (11) won the China Doll Stakes on March 8 with a career-best 97 figure after earning her maiden win following a two-month layoff. She ran well, and although she draws the outside, she has speed, so she should be able to reach the front or sit second early. She gets Saez for the first time; he is the jockey known for riding horses with early speed.

Lion Lake (8) and Sister Troienne (7) finished first and second, just a head apart, in the Herecomesthebride Stakes on February 28, earning career-best 97 figures. Both horses also won their previous races in January and have a shot.

Win bets: Just Aloof (7) and Imaginationthelady (11) at odds of 5 to 2 or higher.

I might bet on one of the others, but I would need better odds than on the top contenders, so Faithful Departed (3) at odds of 6 to 1 or better, along with Counterbalance (11), Lion Lake (8), and Sister Troienne (7).

Exactas: Just Aloof (7) and Imaginationthelady (11) over Just Aloof (7), Imaginationthelady (11), Faithful Departed (3), Counterbalance (11), Lion Lake (8), and Sister Troienne (7).

                        The $500,000 Santa Anita Derby (G1), 1 1/8 miles

Santa Anita – Race 10 – The Santa Anita Derby (G1) drew a field of seven 3-year-olds including five horses who already have some Kentucky Derby points. They will vie for a purse of $750,000 and a share of the qualifying points of 100-50-25-15-10 which go to the top five eligible finishers. (2) Potente is Bob Baffert’s leading Kentucky Derby contender with a month until the first Saturday in May. He is ranked 14 on the points leaderboard with 50 from his win in the San Felipe (G2) last month at 8-1 which was only his second start. (7) Intrepido is also a winner on the Derby trail when he won the American Pharoah (G1) as a 2-year-old at 8-1. In his only start of this year in February he broke sharply, contested the pace, and finished second. (1) Cherokee Nation is the other Baffert runner. He broke his maiden in his sixth race in February when he got off to a good start after a series of problems coming out of the gate. He ran twice on the Derby trail as a maiden and was fifth both times. (4) Robusta was a longshot in all four starts including last month in the San Felipe when he had the lead but missed by a head at 67-1. Betting strategy: Exacta box: 1, 2, 4, 7. Trifecta: 1, 2, 4, 7.

COMMENTS: NATIONAL IDENTITY hit the board in all ten starts and is a little racing luck from winning nine of them. SAUDI CROWN likes to be on the front and catches a field that prefers to be middle back. CRAZY MASON has by far the best late legs but might not get a hot enough pace to chase. BE YOU rides the hot rail and has solid workout prepping following a short rest.

COMMENTS: SISTER TROIENNEs last race was better than the close second finish as she race about a half second faster. JUST ALOOF has the top combination of early and late pace according to Smart Sheets. IMAGINATIONTHELADY has definitely seen the toughest combination but returns from a long layoff. LION LAKE has the biggest advantage in the race with more than a length of extra late speed.

COMMENTS: R DISASTER has never run a bad race and just smoked around the track in a Grade II win. CLICQUOT is an all or nothing horse winning four of six races and has some good works getting ready. GRAND JOB will probably be the post time favorite but does throw in some stinkers. RAGTIME has been a super steady performer hitting the board in all six starts.

COMMENTS: LITIGATION should make an aggressive move out of the turn and has recently beaten a few others in here. YELLOW CARD is a consistent performer with a high floor and some occasional upside pop. USUALLY WRONG knows how to win and can do it from anywhere on track but the competition is the question. REZASROLEX is a neck from winning nine of his last 10 starts and ran faster by more than a second with a career best effort versus the top pick last out.

COMMENTS: REAGANS HONOR should challenge for the lead and has some of the most late pace too. CLASS PRESIDENT is another that should be involved from the start and has the shown the most late speed for this group. FURTHER ADO broke his maiden race in his lone at Keeneland by twenty lengths with his career best. CREOLE CHROME should sit right off the pace and exploded late in his only route and gets more distance here.
