Scott Shapiro: Keeneland Hit & Split Late Pick 4 Picks/Analys

    April 14, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

They are back at it tomorrow for the start of their second full week of racing at the Keeneland Spring Meet. The week is headlined by the Doubledogdare (G2) on Friday and the Elkhorn (G2) and Ben Ali (G3) on Saturday, but first things first. An 8-race Wednesday card that is part of our April $2M rewards points Hit & Split promo at Keeneland. If you did not register for the promotion last week, be sure to do so before playing because if you connect on the Late Pick 4 you split those rewards points between all 1/ST BET and Xpressbet customers. Best of luck!

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    Race 5:
    Grade: C
Main Ticket: 8 She’s No Angel; 2 Black Ginger
    Backups: None

Forecast: I struggled not only with confidence in this beaten $20k claimer over the main track, but with creativity as well. There is a noticeable lack of early speed signed on, which should bode well for a pair of stalkers that are likely to take a good share of the public’s money. #8 She’s No Angel should benefit from the outside draw and the aggressive Martin Garcia in the saddle. She has run some of the fastest recent races on dirt and makes the most sense. #2 Black Ginger is also sensical. The American Freedom filly gets a massive rider upgrade to Jose Ortiz and has a good second over this course last spring. Neither will have to be too much to get to the wire first against this bunch.

    Race 6:
    Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 7 Jubilee Parade; 2 Catch Hound; 10 Fuzzy Stare
    Backups:

Forecast: The second leg of the late Pick 4 is another tricky one. This heat is a 5.5-furlong turf sprint for MSW foes. Wesley Ward appears to hold a strong hand here with two, including the 2-1-ML favorite #5 Gypsy Art. The son of Munnings competed in two stakes races to start his career last year before losing as the favorite in a MSW at Aqueduct. I understand why the public will flock to this gelding, but he does not separate much to me from some other logicals. Therefore, I will toss him and use three others. #7 Jubilee Parade is my lukewarm top choice. The Juddmonte colt moves back to the turf after just missing over the synthetic at Gulfstream Park in March. I liked the way he finished two-back in his lone grass sprint. He should be tough to hold off with a contentious early pace. #2 Catch Hound should be a big price and maybe a reach, but Rusty Arnold is more capable of springing first-time starter upsets then a quick glance at his stats suggest. He could help bust this thing open a bit after what looks like a chalky start to the sequence.

    Race 7:
    Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 5 Fact
    Backups: None

Forecast: Like oddsmaker Nick Tammaro has it tabbed, this first-level allowance event at two-turns is very likely to be bet like a two-horse race between 7-5 ML favorite #2 Rothko and 9-5 second choice #5 Fact. I prefer Fact. Rothko had things all his way last month at Fair Grounds and gave it up late to a 14-1 shot that was coming in off a 6-race losing streak. Fact finished second in his last race as well, but it was much forgivable. Not only was it to a legitimate winner that got the jump on him at one-turn, but it was also his first start since last August. Fact should be tough to beat second off the bench.

    Race 8:
    Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 8 She’s Lookin Lucky; 1 Zadorsky
Backups: 3 Child of the Moon

Forecast: 2-1-ML favorite #3 Child of the Moon is the clear horse to beat on form in this third-level allowance to close the card, but her enemy maybe the race shape. There simply is not a lot of speed on paper to say the least. I expect Luis Saez to get aggressive with #1 Zadorsky from the 1-hole and #8 She’s Lookin Lucky to be prominent as well, but that is unlikely to pave the way to a race that sets up for off-the-pace runners. Flavien Prat might be good enough to overcome this, but I will use the two gals I expect to get the jump on my main ticket in hopes of an upset in the finale.

Jeremy Plonk: Parx Bet $100, Get $10 Picks for Tues 4/14

      April 13, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

The “Blooming Bankrolls” promotion this April at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet offers a $10 bonus when you bet $100 or more at select tracks each Tuesday and Thursday. Parx will be the track spotlighted for this Tuesday. Here’s how I’ll approach that card with the help of the Betmix Angler database.

      Parx: Race 1

#3 Obstinate (5-1 morning line odds) should have buckled when making a run at 6-5 favorite last out and watching that one draw off to win by 10. But, to her credit, ran on clearly second-best. Trainer Felix Flores-Coba is 4-for-his-last-8 in the exacta at Parx with 5-1, 5-1 and 6-1 prices among those. Morning line favorite Breezy Dance is wildly inconsistent, so let’s try to beat her. Win-place bet #3.

      Parx: Race 7

#6 Drake Drive (3-1 morning line odds) had a mis-timed move last out over 6 furlongs and should benefit from a shorter trip as he’s found the right claiming level after 3 local starts since arriving from Woodbine. Jockey Francisco Martinez has been exceptional in local 5-1/2 furlong dashes going 27: 6-4-3 (22% wins) since the start of 2025 at Parx with a $1.34 ROI for every $1 bet. Five of those 6 wins paid $10-plus. Win bet #6.

        #4
        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Will Rogers Downs - Race #4
#3 Irish Lass Worth a little swing in a spot without a ton of pace, as she showed a little pressing pace in the February run and could find herself in a really good first-over spot today while tracking the rail runner.
#5 Myrna She bounced back last time out after a disappointing two-back effort, and she makes a lot of sense here if you think she's going to hold her better form today. Tough to trust, but I'm guessing she'll show up.
#1 Grand Circle She's probably quick enough to mix things up early in a race lacking early burn, and something like her last would probably make her a handful today. Short price?
Race Summary Irish Lass should be a decent number on the board after a flat try last out, but she's finding a short field without a lot of speed and might be in a great spot throughout.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #8
#9 Salt Creek Kid He has some decent finishing form that may play well in a race with several forward players who don't always kick on late. Could get the right kind of plug-along trip to get the last laugh.
#3 Paynt Ball Reliable player almost always finds a great trip while up close and tracking the pace, but she also regularly grinds at that same pace and settles for underneath shares. In the right spot turning for home.
#6 Guapo Think you can toss the total clunker last time out, as his previous form is pretty compelling if he's able to shake off that last one and get back to his baseline.
Race Summary Salt Creek Kid offered a mild rally in stakes company last time out, and he might get a fair enough setup today thanks to the presence of a few pace players.
Will Rogers Downs - Race #9
#5 West Azteca Check him out on the track ahead of this, but he's a fresh face in a race with a handful of chase-and-fade types lined up, and I'm just not that excited about most of those with experience.
#1 Sandthefloor Inside speed might be best of the pace, but he's probably going to take some heat from a couple other types with some prompting pace who could stack up on his outside. Think he'll need a big one, but there's a chance he could shake free.
#3 Twoshai S G A He took a step forward in that December start at Remington, and now he'll race with Lasix for the first time while making his local debut with blinkers. All that might wake him up.
Race Summary West Azteca goes first time out in a spot where I don't have a ton of trust for those who have run. Also consider the first-timer in the next stall outside of him.

          #5
          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Turf Paradise - Race #3
#6 THIRSTY VISION (5-2) Poor turf record but can end drought on the class drop with ideal pace flow.
#5 PURE CANE SUGAR (6-1) Got past dueling leaders but was out-kicked by the winner in same spot.
#3 MY VINO (3-1) Rallied for share in 4 of 5 starts on turf, earned top speed figure with Lopez aboard.
Race Summary THIRSTY VISION has yet to finish in the money in 10 starts on the lawn. But he gets class relief in a field that is a combined 44/2-6-7 on turf, gets pace to rally into and enters the barn of leading trainer Jose Silva Jr. It adds up to a win and place bet and a 3-5-6 exacta box.
          Turf Paradise - Race #5
#5 SWEET CINDI LULU (5-1) Useful debut, shortens up with Valenzuela summoned to ride.
#8 WHISKEYWITHATWIST (8-5) Good speed, good post to use it from, wears hood for first time.
#4 PAGE (8-1) Kenney-trained firster worked in :35 and change twice from Turf Paradise gate.
Race Summary SWEET CINDI LULU worked fast leading to her debut but broke inward and chased the odds-on winner to no avail. She finished a 1-3/4 lengths behind morning-line favorite WHISKEYWITHATWIST, who has good speed and wears blinkers off a :34-2/5 bullet workout. Bet to win and place and play a 5, 8/4, 5, 8/ALL trifecta.
          Turf Paradise - Race #6
#4 BRAZEN NOW (5-2) Rallied wide for third despite voided claim, can be forwardly placed in here.
#8 UPRIGHT (8-5) Just missed in same spot but lack of pace to run at is the concern from outside post.
#1 GODDARD (5-1) Cuts back from 1M, could make run at first win in 17 months in first try at 4-1/2F.
Race Summary BRAZEN NOW showed good speed before he arrived at Turf Paradise for his 7-year-old season and he’s likely going to revert to that up-close style in his fifth start this year. He can move a step closer to $200,000 in earnings. Bet to win and place and play 4-1 and 4-8 exactas.

                # 2 PENN FRANKLIN 4/1
ARCH COMPETITOR is the best bet in this race. He has been racing soundly lately while recording very solid speed figures. Has to be considered - I like the numbers from the last contest. The average class figure alone makes this entrant a definite contender. VERY BAD GUY - Will most likely compete very well in the pace contest which bodes well with this group of animals. Could beat this group given the 57 speed rating put up in his last outing. PENN FRANKLIN - Has been running in the most competitive company of the field lately. With Hazlewood uptop him, this colt ought to be able to break out sharply here.

I think ARMY GIRL is a competitive choice. Will most likely compete quite well in the early speed clash which bodes well with this field. Ran a solid last race. Must be given a chance given the class of races run lately. B. SWIFTY - With a competitive 62 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will unquestionably be a factor in this contest. ROYALEWITHCHEESE - Should go to the front end and may never look back. A solid 82 avg Equibase class figure may give this filly a distinct class edge versus this group.

Will Rogers Downs - Race #1 - Post: 1:15pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $11,000 Class Rating: 42

                    Rating:

                    #4 MARITUDE (ML=2/1)
                    #2 MAZARN (ML=5/2)

MARITUDE - A big drop down in class figure points from her March 24th race at Will Rogers Downs. Based on that knowledge, I will give this horse the advantage. This horse should go right out to the early lead and may never look back. Could gate-to-wire the field. Filly took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. You have to really like that recent race speed rating, 39, which is the top most recent race speed fig of this group. This horse picks up a lot of dough per start. I believe she can add to the lifetime total in this race. MAZARN - With a big class drop in class rating points from her March 21st race at Oaklawn Park. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this one the edge.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DIALED INTO YOU (ML=5/1), #5 GOSPEL DARLENE (ML=6/1), #6 TIZZLIN (ML=6/1),

DIALED INTO YOU - Don't think that this filly has value at 5/1 this time out. GOSPEL DARLENE - The Brain always tells me to keep away from horses in sprint contests that haven't hit the board in sprint events lately. This animal just hasn't looked fit of late. TIZZLIN - 6/1 odds isn't enough for this one when scrutinizing the most recent showings.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #4 MARITUDE on top if we're getting at least 6/5 odds

                      Turf Paradise - Race #4 - Post: 2:40pm - Maiden Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $8,500 Class Rating: 58

                      Rating:

                      #5 WILD RULER (ML=6/1)
                      #7 DENADA (ML=3/1)

WILD RULER - A winning percent like 33 is terrific for any jockey/handler tandem. Generally, I don't play a horse off drills alone, but when I see a mare work at the same distance or longer than a race she's entered in, I become interested. This event sets up for this mare. I call this the 'Lone Stalker' scenario. When the real running starts, she'll be in the 'garden' spot. DENADA - This mare is in good condition, having run a strong race on March 24th, finishing third. Taking a trip down in class ranks; has the class ability to make her presence felt. This speedy sort should benefit from today's shorter trip. Recent Equibase speed figures show solid pattern of improvement.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #6 WEST FRESNO (ML=2/1), #8 AGUILA AZUL (ML=9/2), #4 PEANUT BAR (ML=5/1),

WEST FRESNO - Should have at least finished in the money in the last sixty days in a short distance event to be worth the chance at nominal odds in a sprint. Didn't finish in the money on January 16th at Santa Anita. Followed it up with another less than stellar try. This filly notched a speed fig in her last contest which probably isn't good enough in today's event. AGUILA AZUL - Don't feel this runner will make an impact in today's race. That last speed rating was pedestrian when compared with today's class rating. PEANUT BAR - 5/1 is just not enough of a price to take on this entrant.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - DENADA - Analysis shows this mare's last speed number of 58 is as good as any. Don't overlook this mare in your gambling.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #5 WILD RULER on the win end if we get at least 5/2 odds
