Scott Shapiro: Aqueduct Bet $100, Get $10 Picks

    April 15, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

Thursday marks the midway point in our month long “Blooming Bankrolls” promotion. For those that have not checked it out yet, it could not be simpler. Just bet $100 on the featured track for that Tuesday or Thursday in April and earn a $10 bonus per day. Hopefully, some of you have already taken advantage of the promo, but for those that have not be sure to register on the promotional landing page.

The featured track on Thursday afternoon is Aqueduct and it is a good day to get back into action at the New York Racing Association since they are back on the lawn! The 8-race card includes four grass races. Two of them will be where I use my budget.

    Race 5:
To no one’s surprise Chad Brown holds a strong hand in this MSW for 3YO fillies at one-mile over the turf. #1 Academia was made the 8-5-ML favorite by oddsmaker David Aragona, but I prefer her stablemate #4 Tax Holiday. The daughter of Kingman debuted at Tampa in early February where she went off the 6-5-public choice. The Klaravich Stables filly did zero running that day, but has been given time by Brown despite staying on the work tab throughout. She meets a softer, more compact group in this spot and should run much better after gaining invaluable experience in her Florida debut. Dylan Davis will be aboard.

Play: #4 Tax Holiday (3-1 ML)

    Race 8:
The finale is a full-field state-bred MSW event at the same one-mile distance over the sod where a number of fillies will make their first start, including Dave Portnoy and Go Go Greys Stable #8 Miss Apples. She will likely to take plenty of public support as her 7-2-ML suggests, as will #1 Morning Prayer. The Tom Morley runner makes her first start since being part of a 3-horse blanket finish over this course in late October. Both merit respect, but this race is too wide-open to swallow a short price. I will take a big swing with #7 Fairweatherlover. The King for a Day filly raced twice as a 2YO at Finger Lakes where she hit the board in both starts, but failed to make a serious run at the winner. Trainer Melanie Giddings has given her time and brings her back off the break in a two-turn grass race. King for a Day is not much of a turf sire, but there is enough on the bottom side to gamble on a filly that comes in from Florida having worked over both the dirt and turf at Palm Meadows. Giddings has proven capable off a long break and this race is ripe for an upset. Hopefully, the veteran Jose Lezcano can deliver one!

    Play: #7 Fairweatherlover (15-1 ML)

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Keeneland - Race #6
#4 Taterpie Price might be OK as he turns back off a couple of fading route tries, but his January sprint run wasn't all bad, and he could be in line for a decent spying trip while up close in a race without a ton of serious early burn.
#5 Gypsy Art Suppose he's probably going to be tough here with a couple of stakes placings on his page already, but he hasn't finished any of those three career starts with a whole lot of enthusiasm, and he's probably going to get bet pretty hard in what feels like a soft race for the level. I'm just not totally sold.
#7 Jubilee Parade He might find a really good run of things while tracking the splits from out here, and he makes good sense as the likely second choice behind Gypsy Art.
Race Summary Taterpie has some appeal while turning back with enough tracking pace to avoid getting outrun early, and I don't totally trust the two most logical players on paper, though they make enough sense that I wouldn't argue with you if you had a strong lean to either one.
      Keeneland - Race #7
#5 Fact Interested to see how this guy and the next one get bet. The price probably isn't going to be a whole lot here, but maybe something close to that 9/5 ML offering would be enough. Better stuff might do, and his only two-turn try was a close second in stakes company. Enough to like.
#2 Rothko Wouldn't be a surprise to see him score here while losing the blinkers, but I thought he was supposed to get the job done last time around when he came up short late, and the price probably isn't going to be all that appealing.
#1 Alston Don't think he's out of the question while coming back off another layoff, as his debut score was decent enough, and he has been working pretty forwardly/regularly for this run off the bench.
Race Summary Fact and Rothko probably take a lot of the cash here, but I think the former is the right one with a really nice tracking trip likely in store.
      Keeneland - Race #8
#6 Austere There are a handful of pretty decent stakes tries on her page despite the fact that she has settled underneath in all of those kinds of tries on her page, and she's back fresh in a spot that might be a good kickoff for her 5-year-old campaign.
#3 Child of the Moon No arguments here except maybe the offering on the board, as she has been in the frame in a couple pretty solid stakes spots, and she has been super reliable for a top team.
#12 Sweet Treasure Considered her on top and think she should be on all the multi-race plays, as she chased recent Jenny Wiley winner Expensive Queen at Fair Grounds last time out and was also in the picture behind Fast Market a few starts back -- that one ran on OK at a big number in that same Grade I here last weekend.
Race Summary Austere and Sweet Treasure look like the reasonable alternatives to the likely chalk, but I think Austere has the slight edge while returning off the layoff with a solid last-out race and company line on her page.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #2
#8 EMERGING LEADER (3-1) Can be excused for U.S. debut, gets Lasix on the class drop by D’Angelo.
#1 FIT TO FIRE (7-5) Can save ground from rail and rally into projected lively pace, use in all gimmicks.
#4 DIVO D’ORO (7-2) Been burning money this year, adds blinkers, changes riders again.
Race Summary EMERGING LEADER was roughed up early in his U.S. debut for a $35,000 tag off a six-month layoff. He lived up to the hype in a well-bet debut last September at La Plata Racetrack in Argentina, drawing away to an easy victory at 6F. Bet to win and place and play 8/1, 4/1, 4, 6, 7 trifecta.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #3
#5 BLAZING AFFAIR (5-2) In good form cycle, well-positioned in repeat attempt but carries 125 pounds.
#4 DAME GINA MARIE (2-1) Pressed 2-1 winner while in-hand, carried wide, out-kicked in the stretch.
#2 BEAUTRIZ (15-1) Loomed 4-wide off the dueling leaders at top of stretch, edged away late in 5-1/2F win.
Race Summary BLAZING AFFAIR finished between a pair of short priced follow-up winners when second for a $25,000 tag two starts ago. She shook a duel to win as the 1-to-9 favorite in her maiden victory and should go well again with plenty of speed to her inside. Bet to win and place and play 5-2 and 5-4 exactas.
Tampa Bay Downs - Race #4
#1 METAPHOR (6-1) Lost momentum near turn, stayed on willingly while wide, enters new barn.
#7 REDBIRD NATION (5-2) Succumbed to rapid fractions in longer sprint in bid for three wins in a row.
#2 KAPAZ (3-1) Earned his top speed figure in 7F victory with Paco aboard for the first time.
Race Summary METAPHOR settled into good mid-pack striking position from post 9, but was forced to steady and rally wide when a rival ahead of him checked sharply nearing the turn. He finished willingly as the beaten favorite, now draws the rail for new connections at a better price. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-7 exactas.

                Evangeline Downs - Race #6 - Post: 7:46pm - Optional Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $33,000 Class Rating: 86

                Rating:

                #4 STORMS OF LIFE (ML=5/1)

STORMS OF LIFE - Thornton's agent must enjoy anytime David gives them a mount; win percentage together is terrific. I seem to always make money betting David horses on the turf. That barn has a strong win percent for this distance/surface. The recent bullet 102.4 work should put this mare on track for today's outing.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 ROAR OF SILENCE (ML=5/2), #8 ROSIE'S ANGUS (ML=7/2), #2 BOLD EXAGGERATION (ML=6/1),

ROAR OF SILENCE - This chalk horse ran on Mar 22nd and hasn't had a workout after that. ROSIE'S ANGUS - Just cannot wager on this steed. Didn't show me anything positive last time out or on February 20th. Will be tough for this thoroughbred to beat this group off of that last speed figure. Not probable to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put her on the likely underpriced contenders list. BOLD EXAGGERATION - This less than sharp equine showed very liitle last time out finishing fifth. Don't see any hint of a reversal of fortune today. When looking at today's class rating, she will have to earn a better speed figure than in the last race to vie in this turf route.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 STORMS OF LIFE is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better
                EXACTA WAGERS: 4 with 6
                TRIFECTA WAGERS: Pass
                SUPERFECTA WAGERS: None

                  Race 3 - Claiming - 6.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $23800 Class Rating: 76

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE FEBRUARY 15 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $16,000
                  RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                  # 5 BLAZING AFFAIR 5/2
                  # 4 DAME GINA MARIE 2/1
                  # 7 SOUND IT OUT 4/1
My choice for this event is BLAZING AFFAIR. Ought to be used in the exotic wagers. She has earned strong numbers under today's conditions and should fare well against this group. Hard to pass on this filly with Leon in the saddle. DAME GINA MARIE - With a formidable 68 average speed rating at the distance, seems well suited for today's race. Had one of the most favorable speed figures of this field in her last outing. SOUND IT OUT - Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group lately. Has to be considered against this group of horses displaying formidable numbers recently and an average speed figure of 68 under similar conditions.

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MARCH 15 ALLOWED 2 LBS.

                    # 4 ZOFFARELLI (IRE) 8/1
                    # 3 CODE DUELLO 4/1
                    # 8 PLANE TALK 8/1
ZOFFARELLI (IRE) supports the wager in here particularly if the morning line of 8/1 holds. Tough to pass on this gelding with Franco in the saddle. Has strong speed figs and has to be considered for a bet here. Franco has one of the most respectable rider ROI's on the grounds, returning to players +55 percent. CODE DUELLO - Lopez will probably be able to get this gelding to break out early in this contest. Is a contender - given the 101 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race. PLANE TALK - Has been running admirably lately and should be close to the front end early on. Has run soundly when racing a turf sprint race.

                      Keeneland - Race #4 - Post: 2:36pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $110,000 Class Rating: 88

                      Rating:

                      #7 ROSE RULER (ML=5/1)
                      #6 SEDONA SPIRIT (ML=6/1)
                      #4 ZAP D'ETAT (ML=10/1)

ROSE RULER - That last blow out tells me this gelding is set for a top effort. Gelding has shown some pace. This shorter distance should be better for him. SEDONA SPIRIT - This rider and conditioner have a favorable ROI when they join forces. This mount is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a third place finish in his race on Feb 21st on a sluggish track. ZAP D'ETAT - Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this horse has the highest Equibase speed fig for the distance/surface.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #3 I'M TROUBLE (ML=3/1), #9 MCCANN (ML=4/1), #1 CARAGOGO (ML=9/2),

I'M TROUBLE - Today's event is 5 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance affair in the last two months. Not the best of omens. This equine hasn't been in the mix in either of his last two races around the track. Don't believe this questionable contender will do much running in today's event. That last speed figure was pedestrian when compared with today's Equibase class figure. MCCANN - Trying to beat this entrant today at the price of 4/1. CARAGOGO - Not likely for this thoroughbred to do much running with no recent success in a short distance affair.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #7 ROSE RULER to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/2 or better though
