    Scott Shapiro: Keeneland Spot Plays

    April 17, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The last Saturday of the Keeneland Spring Meet is nearly upon us with Opening Day at Churchill Downs right around the corner. The 11-race card is headlined by the Ben Ali (G3) on the main track and the Elkhorn (G2) over the grass. Here are a few horses I like most on the April 18 Keeneland slate.

    Race 7:
In a shocking development trainer Wesley Ward holds a strong hand in this second level allowance over the main track. Ward has 8-5-favorite #7 Whatchatalkinabout, who makes his first start since the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) and 3-1-second choice #1 Floodlites. One of them is likely to win the race, but I prefer the longer price of the two. Sure, Whatchatalkinabout holds the class edge, but I like the trip Floodlites should get more. The son of City of Light attracts veteran John Velazquez. Johnny V. should be able to sit a comfortable voyage along the inside not too far off of likely pacesetter #6 Modus Bestia. Floodlites has won 2 in a row against lesser before a winter break and appears poised to continue his run to kickoff the late Pick 5.

    Play: #1 Floodlites (3-1 ML)

    Race 8:
This $140,000 allowance turf sprint has a lack of serious early speed signed on. This could make life difficult on those that are likely to be off-the-pace early. I will take a swing with a gelding I am hopeful can make the lead and dictate pace. #2 Full Disclosure ships in from Florida after a pair of runs against stakes foes going 5-furlongs over the Gulfstream Park sod. The son of Cajun Breeze was a huge price in both races, but did not disgrace in either effort. Two-back in the Janus at odds of 41-1 he had traffic issues when losing to the talented Reef Runner and then in his last start on January 24 he missed beating Litigation by a neck at odds of 96-1. Full Disclosure did not make the lead in either of those races, but they went in under 21 seconds in the first quarter. Given the inside draw and lack of speed to his outside, I expect jockey Adam Beschizza to get aggressive in this one’s first start over this course. Hopefully, he can control things early or perhaps stalk just off #8 My Own. Either way I am expecting him to outrun his odds once again.

Play: #2 Full Disclosure (12-1 ML)

    Race 11:
Trainer Brad Cox had a fantastic Triple Crown prep season and has had an even better Keeneland spring thus far. The Louisville native is 9 for 23 overall and 4 for 5 this week heading into Friday afternoon’s card. Cox sends out second-time starter #10 Be the Light in this MSW for 3YO fillies over the main track. The Godolphin homebred debuted down at Fair Grounds in what was likely treated as somewhat of a prep. The daughter of Medaglia d’Oro broke a bit slow allowing the winner to get the jump and ended up finishing an underwhelming third. Expect a big move forward from Be the Light on Saturday given the experience gained at first asking and a significant rider upgrade to Luis Saez. A single for me in the late horizontals.

Play: #10 Blue Light (3-1 ML)

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Early Pick 4 Analysis

      April 17, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

      XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Yonkers Raceway has a 10-race card to end the week. The $1.00 Early Pick 4 starts in Race 1, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 1 (6:45 PM EDT)

5-Rydingtothewire (2-1)-This is one of the fastest horses in this race, but that only means so much. The issue is more about tactical speed and if Lauren Tritton keeps the 5-year-old racing near the top of the stack, good things could happen.
6-Fasting (3-1)-This is the 2nd start on Lasix, the last race was at PcD, and it was very dull. But if a bounce back effort comes about the Engblom trainee could post a win. Jason Bartlett sticks and has enough gate speed to get a good early seat.
7-Twin Fury (8-1)-This is the 3rd start off the bench, and the 1st race was an even effort at YR versus better. Came a good 2nd leaving from the 9-hole at M1 and now bumps up. Has hit the board in 2 of 3 starts at YR, has the gate speed to get a close-up seat and should be a juicy price.

      Race 2 (7:05 PM EDT)

2-Silk Cloud A (6-1)-Using at a solid price in race that should have some lively fractions. Needs a sharp steer and to be close to the leader at the head of the lane. The inside draw should help as the lack of gate speed hurts and this race could set up for a closer.
4-Aardie B Miki N (9/5)-Will fade #3 Coastal Babe N (3/2) and use Miki who raced big from the 7-hole to take a picture in last. Jason Bartlett could leave and get a pocket ride and be the best down the lane.

      Race 3 (7:25 PM EDT)

2-Energy King (4-1)-Makes the 1st start for the Grasso barn and should relish the company. The class relief should help in a contest without a standout, and Yannick Gingras sticks.
3-Escaper (5/2)-Drops and gets class relief and could be a player with a smooth trip. Has been starting from the 7 hole and the post relief could make a winning difference.
8-Sunday Shoes (5-1)-Engblom-Bartlett entry fired hot off the bench to go gate to wire at 8/5. The post makes the price, does step up as well, but will respect the Mohawk shipper versus this crew.

      Race 14 (7:45 PM EDT)

3-Tarapasta (2-1)-Won Legs 2/3, and made it look easy going gate to wire. Beat 2 from this field last time at 1/9 and this race will go through the morning line chalk. This is the one to beat but there is some depth to this field.
6-Bath Bomb (7/2)-Will use and bank on AMac having his foot through the floorboard. Has finished 2nd twice in this Series and will look for an aggressive try. If the start goes well a 2-hole trip behind the program chalk could work for a win.

      $1 Early Pick 4

      5,6,7/2,4/2,3,8/3,6

Frank Carulli: Keeneland $3 Late Pick 3

        April 17, 2026 | By Frank Carulli

        KEENELAND $3 LATE PICK 3
        Friday, April 17, 2026

Two graded stakes-winning mares approaching millionaire status clash in the featured $400,000 Baird Doubledogdare Stakes at Keeneland this Friday. The 1-1/16-miles race on the main track is surrounded by two crowded 5-1/2F turf sprints that comprise the $3 Late Pick 3. Here’s a closer look and a suggested $72 ticket:

KEE 8th Race (4:44 p.m. EST) -- Most of the favorites in this $120,000 turf allowance at 5-1/2F have kept suspect company lines, lending itself to a mixed bag of plays in the leadoff leg. The well-traveled ATLAL surged clear in a long sprint at Kentucky Downs to break his maiden on turf. More recently, he drew clear entering the stretch but got caught by the 8-5 winner in the shadow of the wire on Keeneland’s dirt track. He runs 5-1/2F for the first time but merits a spot on the ticket in his current form. STRATE CASH earned the field’s second-best speed rating when he won a Maiden Special Weight sprint attempt a year ago at Santa Anita. He’s now in the barn of trainer Cherie DeVaux, who has a win and six runner-up finishes from her last 17 turf starters. DOUBLE TALKER will try to follow the footsteps of his sire – 2014 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf champion Hootenanny – in his first turf test. He impressed in a 4-1/2F debut victory on the Keeneland dirt a year ago, stalking the 1-to-5 favorite and blowing past him in the final furlong; however, few of his rivals that day have done much since. MOON SNIPER has a good enough 5-1/2F turf allowance at Keeneland to summon to make him a 20-1 consideration. He ranged up 5-wide in the stretch but was in tight at the 1/8th pole while the top pair were in full flight from off the pace.

KEE 9th Race (5:16 p.m. EST) -- GIN GIN blossomed into the field’s lone Grade 1 winner in four starts since last April for trainer Brendan Walsh. She survived a stretch-long duel to win the 1-1/8-mile Juddmonte Spinster at Keeneland, but she was eased when last seen in the Breeders’ Cup Distaff in November. ALPINE PRINCESS toured the U.S. to compile a 7/1-4-1 record in graded route races, finishing 2-1/2 lengths behind GIN GIN in the G-3 Shawnee at today’s distance before she won the G-3 Fall City Handicap with similar rest entering today’s race.

KEE 10th race (5:48 p.m. EST) -- SHE WANTS WAR shows some flashy workouts for her seasonal debut. She was out-dueled by the runner-up and passed by a pair of deep closers on the Churchill Downs lawn at this distance last summer. Her uncoupled stablemate, FOOL’S ADVENTURE, is sure to get a lot of betting attention for trainer Wesley Ward, who is 30-for-147 with debut turf starters in the last five years, though 88 of them were dismissed at 4-1 odds or less. AMANI’S MUSIC ‘led through most of the stretch’ but was out-dueled by the 5-to-2 winner on Gulfstream Park’s synthetic track. The race timed 4/5 of a second slower than a six-figure optional claimer for older fillies and mares on the same card. Her two-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer, Brad Cox, is 98-for-317 with second-time starters the last two years with a positive return on investment.

        Suggested $3 Pick 3 Ticket
        KEE 8th Race: 1, 5, 6, 7
        KEE 9th Race: 1, 4
        KEE 10th Race: 2, 3, 5
        Cost: $72

Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Opening Day Spot Plays

          April 16, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

After a week off at Santa Anita Park, it is time for Opening Day of the springtime Hollywood meet at “The Great Race Place.” The 9-race slate kicks off at 4PM eastern/1PM local time and includes five races over the grass. Here are a few horses I plan to build my Opening Day around in Arcadia on Friday afternoon.

          Race 2:
My first play of the meet comes in this state-bred MSW event at one mile over the main track where I like second-time starter #2 Blame It On Jack. The Peter Miller trainee stretches out to two turns after breaking slowly from his inside draw on debut going 6-furlongs versus similar on April 2. The Blame gelding was no match for the two betting favorites who were far more prominent early than he was two weeks ago, but he did run on to finish a well-beaten third. The softer field, added ground, and experience gained from his first start should all lead to an improved run as jockey Juan Hernandez jumps aboard this time around.

Play: #2 Blame It On Jack (9-5 ML)

          Race 3:
#1 Cyprus Moon is listed as the 7-5-ML favorite in this non-winners of three claimer at 6-furlongs over the grass, but she has had very fair chances at this level in back-to-back starts and been unable to seal the deal. The Malibu Moon mare will likely be on the lead again, but I prefer the other likely speed #4 How Lovely. The Steve Knapp trainee drops out of a conditional starter allowance into this claiming spot and should have a tactical advantage on the chalk drawing to her outside. She has not necessarily proven she can settle just off and finish with energy, but her last couple of races have come against faster horses than she meets on Friday afternoon. I like her chances to gut this out under veteran Edwin Maldonado.

Play: #4 How Lovely (3-1 ML)

          Race 5:
The pace in this $25k claimer over the grass that not only kicks off the late Pick 5, but also the $3 All Turf Pick 3 should be contentious. #1 Invincible Molly and #4 Shangrilama were prominent in their start last month at this level, but are likely to be in the second tier in this bunch given the presence of #2 Long Mayshe Reigns and #5 Ro Town. The race should really setup for a horse that can settle early and finish strong. I am hopeful that is #8 Special Flower. The 7YO mare makes her fourth start of the year after being caught very wide into the lane in the common race on March 13. She still finished with energy at nearly 9-1 to earn third. She has had all of her success over this course, draws favorably to the outside, and should relish the slight cutback to 6-panels. At 9-2 Special Flower offers fair value in a fun way to start a few of the bigger horizontals on the card.

Play: #8 Special Flower (9-2 ML)

            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #4
#7 Kiki Ride Probably going to have to land here at something shorter than the 6/1 ML offering, but his two- and three-back runs at this level were both pretty competitive, and he gets back down in class for this one while seemingly only having the next guy to beat...
#6 Soi Ngern He was a distant second at even money in the first start at this level, and his baseline form fits pretty well in this spot. Still, he has had a lot of chances and probably gets bet today. Might roll this bad group, but I'm not sold.
#2 Joey Ten Check him out on the tote and track and adjust as needed -- he's a fresh face in a race without a whole lot of depth, so he might not need to be a handful to grab a big piece of this.
Race Summary Kiki Ride has been solid when racing at this level, and the drop in class gives him a chance to score today with a great tracking trip waiting for him.
Santa Anita Park - Race #7
#7 Sir Percival He has the pace to mix things up early and also owns the ability to tap on the brakes a little bit if needed, and that may serve him well while cutting back to a sprint trip that may suit him. Dangerous today.
#5 Scene By Me Wouldn't argue that hard with you if you landed here at what might be a modest kind of price, as he hasn't done anything wrong in two starts and has some reasonable upside in the second start off the layoff. Obvious player is the one to beat.
#1 Trump Era He was way out of his league when racing with the classy ones last time out, but the move to the turf and class drop could help him wake up. Chance.
Race Summary Sir Percival graduated going short on the turf, so you know this trip is in his scope while turning back off the route runs, and he might find himself in a really perfect kind of spot while tracking the more committed pace players.
Santa Anita Park - Race #9
#4 Miles Finch The guy who won that last race was in pretty good form last summer, and he has a few decent sprint tries on his page. Think he's going to hit hard here if he's ready to roll. Strong lean.
#5 Tom Seaver He has been super reliable on the turf in all four tries, and he has some versatility in running style that should give his rider a few options right out of the gate. The one to beat.
#8 Chromeflash Nothing to write home about here after four very dull tries in a row, but there are a few competitive lines on his page if you dig back far enough, and maybe he wakes up at a price in the second start back.
Race Summary Miles Finch should get a great go of things while right in the thick of it from the start, and he's probably capable of better than he showed going long at Del Mar last summer. Cutback run while fresh might do the trick.

              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Keeneland - Race #2
#5 SUTURA (4-1) Proved versatile with pair of seconds to start career, barn good with new acquisitions.
#1 CAT ISLAND (8-1) Second in lone dirt try at Keeneland behind Grade 1-winning millionaire Percy’s Bar.
#3 STARSHIP GODIVA (3-1) Solid work tab, barn is 17/5-5-1 with first-time starters since Christmas.
Race Summary SUTURA ran second from on and off the pace on a surface switch in her first two starts. She tries a long sprint for the first time today for new trainer Jack Sisterson, who is 10-for-39 the last three years with new acquisitions, winning races at five tracks with a $6.70 average win mutuel. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 3/1, 2, 3, 5/ALL trifecta.
              Keeneland - Race #4
#6 GRACE OF MONACO (7-2) Loomed 5-wide but flattened out in what could develop into strong race.
#5 GOOD GRACES (8-1) Stepped it up for recent work, sire was two-time Grade 1-winning router.
#1 MIGHTY NORA (2-1) Hit board in MSW sprints at Churchill Downs, Oaklawn Park and Keeneland.
Race Summary GRACE OF MONACO, off last and taken widest on the backstretch, was in range of the leaders on the turn but faltered badly in the stretch. The race winner won a $125k allowance next out and the runner-up posted a 76 Beyer in her debut, so there is some upside for a good second-out barn. Bet to win and place and play a 1-5-6 exacta box.
              Keeneland - Race #6
#1 DURANTE (8-1) Been facing monsters, live longshot can be forwardly placed a long way with blinks on.
#2 BOLD JOURNEY (8-5) Outrun to mid-turn, sustained wide rally to post upset G-3 victory.
#4 LITTLE NI (3-1) Has speed, gets Lasix, looks to recapture top form off encouraging work tab.
Race Summary DURANTE, on the brink of millionaire status, gave way after chasing speedy favorite Booth – who led at the stretch call in 8 of 15 starts – before Tejano Twist (12-48, $1.9 million) passed by for the win. He met the likes of Breeders’ Cup Sprint winner Bentornato, multi-millionaires Banishing and Skelly and graded stakes winners Roll On Big Joe and Nakatomi last year at age 6. He runs for a $175,000 claiming tag, adds blinkers and can make good use of his speed from the rail in his second start this year. Bet to win and place and play a 1-ALL exacta.

Race 3 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.5f on the Turf. Purse: $110000 Class Rating: 85

KEE - R10 - FOR MAIDENS, FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. IN THE EVENT THAT THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF IT WILL BE CONTESTED AT FIVE AND ONE HALF FURLONG ON THE MAIN TRACK.
                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 7 TWIRLING CLAIRE 9/2
                    # 5 AMANI'S MUSIC 7/2
                    # 3 SHE WANTS WAR 5/2
My choice in this race is TWIRLING CLAIRE. The speed rating of 86 from her last race looks very strong in here. Is tough not to consider based on Equibase Speed Figures which have been decent - 81 avg - of late. AMANI'S MUSIC - The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a turnaround for this filly. Will probably be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the halfway point of the contest. SHE WANTS WAR - Ward has this filly running well and is a respectable selection based on the solid speed figures posted in sprint races lately. Will almost certainly come out sharp - I have liked the way this filly has moved swiftly to the front end recently.

                      Lone Star Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:44pm - Allowance - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $40,500 Class Rating: 79

                      Rating:

                      #5 KAUSE I'M DEVINE (ML=3/1)

KAUSE I'M DEVINE - Have to watch for this animal on the grass. Last race at Sam Houston, scored a big turf figure. Have to think she can do it again right here. A big drop down in class figure points from her March 21st race at Sam Houston. Based on that valuable data, I will give this one the advantage. This mount has a lot of class. A good sign in a race on the turf like we have today.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SHY ANN (ML=5/2), #2 AVALING (ML=9/2), #10 GOLDEN PELICAN (ML=5/1),

SHY ANN - This less than sharp equine hasn't been on the track since Jan 30th. Not even any works. AVALING - You figure that this horse is going to be victorious just because she's always close. Just doesn't win often.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #5 KAUSE I'M DEVINE on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

FOR FILLIES AND MARES THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES OR WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE APRIL 17, 2025. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $50,000

                        # 6 ROYAL BOBBIE 7/2
                        # 5 BOURBON SERENGETI 9/2
MALU looks to be a respectable contender. Rodriguez has this mare racing well and is a decent choice based on the formidable speed figures posted in route races lately. Santana has a win percent of 25 over the last 30 days. I like Santana on this mare to give her a solid chance to hit the wire first. ROYAL BOBBIE - Is a solid contender - given the 83 Equibase Speed Figure from her most recent race. Rice has a sound 21 percent win rate with entries running at this distance and surface. BOURBON SERENGETI - With Gonzalez controlling the reins on her, this mare will probably be able to break out early for this race. Ought to be considered - I like the numbers from the last race.

                          Rating:

                          #1 BEAMER (ML=7/2)
                          #10 AGAMI (ML=6/1)

BEAMER - Taking a big drop in Equibase class figure points from her March 19th race at Fair Grounds. Based on that information, I will give this animal the advantage. This horse has shown the form to win on different ovals. Making the move from Fair Grounds for today's event, I have to believe she's ready to run. This horse has done very well at this distance. AGAMI - This rider and handler have a beneficial return on investment when they team up.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #3 SMART JENNY (ML=8/5), #4 CRUSIN LIKE A CAT (ML=9/2),

SMART JENNY - Can't play this pony in today's sprint of 7 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance race lately. Can't play this chalk horse off the extended layoff. CRUSIN LIKE A CAT - Speed figs tell a narrative of deteriorating form.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 BEAMER to win if we can get at least 7/5 odds
