Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card. The $1.00 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (8:25 PM EDT)

4-Howlenthehills (9/2)-Needs a trip to win and didn’t get the needed journey last time. Got away 3rd against Coaches Corner and had to go 1st over into a 27.1 3rd quarter. That plan didn’t work and was out of juice down the lane. Could use a win and Matt Kakaley will try to be no worse than 2nd after the first turn. That’s possible, and so is a picture at a square price.
5-Huntinthelastdolar (1/1)-The Engblom trainee ran into Mossdale Ben last time and finished a good 2nd but wasn’t going to win that night. This time is different, Bartlett should be on top or right behind the leader and either could work for a win.

Race 7 (8:45 PM EDT)

1-Captain Albano (5/2)-This is the most competitive race in the sequence. The Captain has an edge with the rail, and he could use another win in the Series. Will look for an aggressive steer tonight.
2-Sweet Beach Life (8-1)-Going to use Kakaley on this 5-year-old, willing to fade Redwood Hanover and Soho Firestone as they already have 2 wins in the Series. Just missed by a nose last time after a strong rally. When right, the Alexander trainee can leave as fast as the gate car. The pedal will be down, should be a juicy price, and needs a win.

Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

1-Panettone Hanover (4-1)-Closed in 55.2 in the first start for the Joe B barn and came 3rd versus similar. That effort came from post 6 and this time shouldn’t be 5-lengths from the lead at the half. Could be sitting on a big try and can make the most of drawing the rail.
3-Coalford Topguy GB (8/5)-Won at 3/5 last time, was on top most of the mile and took advantage of Bartlett working kind fractions. That was the 2nd race on Lasix. Tonight, Bartlett could be content getting a 2 hole trip behind Panettone Hanover and then take his chances down the lane for another picture.

Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

1-Casino Action N (8/5)-Will need to use both chalks in this leg but this is basically a field that doesn’t like to win. Bartlett can make a winning difference leaving from the rail. This isn’t a lock but the drop in class should help.
2-Collective Works A (12-1)-This is 2nd time Lasix, plus drops and will use that angle. Had the 7-hole in last and raced from the back. Did pace the 2nd half in 56.2 but could not catch up because the half went in a slow 58.1. Fits with this kind, and Jordan Stratton knows how to tackle the leader down the lane.
4-Hammering Hank (9/5)-Hank has been facing better but is only 1 for 9 this year. This is another short price that is hard to leave out but doesn’t have the gate speed to make the mission easier. Draws well and drops, and against this group Brent Holland could get an up-close seat when the wings fold.

Mountaineer - Race #3

#5 Jess's Gypsy Girl	I like that she showed a little bit of late life in the last one after a slow getaway, and she typically has some more tactical pace to keep in the frame early on. Ready for better off the four-month spell?
#4 Maci's World	Think her better stuff would probably handle these, and the two most recent flat tries came when she raced out of town, so I am assuming she's going to bring her local baseline again tonight and play a big part in this one.
#1 Rock Star Parking	She has carried her form over a handful of different surfaces in the last year, and that gives some comfort to the idea that she'll bring a solid try here. Tracks inside before angling out and around?
Race Summary	Jess's Gypsy Girl gets the edge in a spot where none of the top three choices would surprise, and I'm hoping the price will stay just playable enough.

Mountaineer - Race #4

#5 Handle On You	There are a couple of players in here with enough speed to think she might be able to settle and rally for the last laugh, and she owns solid tries over the local footing, so you can forgive the two-back dud and expect her to show up again.
#3 Kittyup	Forward player gets some class relief in claiming price and local company, so it'd be no surprise to see her sit right up on the splits and turn a first-over trip into a score today. Wouldn't argue with you.
#1 Slainte Mhath	Inside pace probably has a little bit of company early on, but if she's able to put the other forward players away, she might be able to hang around and hold off the top choice. Not totally sold, but I wouldn't be surprised...
Race Summary	Handle On You won't be a big price, but she has good local form and good route form to her name, and I think she gets the right setup with an honest enough race shape waiting for her on paper.

Mountaineer - Race #7

#6 Charlieslitldevil	He has some tactical route pace that might turn into a decent enough spying/finishing trip while turning back, and I'm not all that impressed with the other form on paper, so he can probably be tough here if he can translate the route runs to this sprint trip.
#1 Big Producer	He has been in with a lot of tougher groups in those races on his page -- some substantially deeper -- so the class relief against these may be enough to get him home. One of the ones.
#3 Financial Whiz	He's another route player cutting back with some OK finishing form on his page, and he made a big move before flattening when last seen in November. Not totally sold that going short is his thing, but the form is there if he can bring his better stuff while racing fresh.
Race Summary	Think there are a few ways to go in here and didn't even list #5 Wings of God or #4 Skylar's Brother who both make sense with their better stuff. All that said, I think Charlieslitldevil might find the right kind of outside spy while cutting back off the route trips.

#5 SPECIAL AFFAIR (5-1)	Tampa shipper is 2-43 but she gets in light and can rally for minor awards.
#7 LOOKINGFORTREASURE (5-2)	Broke maiden off similar layoff to begin 5yo season, gets Paco.
Race Summary	CHAMPAGNE MISCHIEF opened clear stretch leads in her prior two starts for $7,500 and finished on both sides of a photo-finish for the win. She should be close-up throughout from a favorable post and is the only two-time winner at 6F. Bet to win and place and play 8-5 and 8-7 exactas.

#6 MEDIUM COOL (5-1)	Steps up off $15,000 claim, speed meter registers ‘hot’ for new barn.

In her lone start on conventional dirt, she set a pressured pace and tired at this distance in a race won by Cravings (2-6, $64k), who won a $30,000/nw2 claimer at Aqueduct last month. DR J Y. G - Might see a different horse here with the blinkers change. I think having Sanchez ride this gelding is a smart move.

A solid 77 avg Equibase class figure may give this colt a distinct class edge against this group. FINANCIAL WHIZ - Has been running solidly lately and will probably be on the front end early on.
