Al Cimaglia: Miami Valley Late Pick 4 Analysis

    April 29, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Miami Valley has a 14-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (7:30 PM EDT)

1-Mega Money (7-1)-This is the 4th start in the Todd Luther barn and has a win plus 3rd and 4th place finishes versus this company. The last 2 starts came from post 8 and 10. Will take a swing with the 1-hole will look for this mare to post a win against this kind at a nice price.
6-Vekna (9/2)-Steps up but so do 3 others. Went off at 1-9 last time, drew off by 5 lengths and could be a square price. Did hit the board in the last 4 races and has enough early speed to get a close-up seat.
7-Global Sensation (4-1)-Has been facing tougher and is still looking for its 1st picture this year. Has finished 2nd in the past 4 races including last week. Stayed inside after leaving from post 5, and tonight David Miller should have the pedal down. Can get a top of the stack trip versus this kind.

    Race 12 (7:51 PM EDT)

4-Art Of Racing (5/2)-Miller posts 24% winners when driving for the Perrin barn and this mare comes off her best finish in a while. Was used early and was able to pass horses down the lane to finish 3rd. Will string along and look for the upswing to continue.
5-Goldies Adelight A (2-1)-Took advantage off quick fractions and a sharp steer to drop and pop against this kind. Could double up but won't be close to 4-1.

    Race 13 (8:12 PM EDT)

1-Herecomescharlie B (5/2)-Dropped 2 back, after taking a month off and came 3rd. Returned 6 days later, dropped again and this time took a picture. Takes a good step up but is still facing softer than before the time off. Using here after a confidence booster and thinking the program odds could be low.
7-Southwind Mai Tai (7/2)-In the last 3 starts has had posts 7-8 and 10. Now drops to the level of its last win. Needs a trip and should be a player with Dave Miller at the controls.

    Race 14 (8:33 PM EDT)

4-Delco Kathleen (5/2)-Interesting taffy pull with not much form to chew on. This mare finished 2nd in last, now steps up and has taken 3 pictures in 12 races at MVR. Gets a decent post draw, Chris Page sticks, and that's enough to make it the program chalk. Its recent resume is better than most and with a smooth steer could be posing.
5-Arrival (6-1)-This veteran hasn't had much love from the post draw gods and now lands in a choice slot. Is 0-11, looking for a price and for Marvin Luna to not be too far back when the wings fold. If she gets away with a decent seat, and the fractions are honest this mare can close well.

    $1 Late Pick 4

    1,6,7/4,5/1,7/4,5
    Total Bet=$24

Scott Shapiro: Churchill Downs Wednesday Spot Plays

      April 28, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

Derby Week continues on Wednesday afternoon at Churchill Downs when the first stakes action commences. I did not have strong takes on either the Kentucky Juvenile or the Issac Murphy Marathon, but there are a few runners I do like on the ten-race card that kicks off at 12:45 eastern. Here are my top plays on the first hump day card of the year in Louisville.

      Race 1:
The lid lifter is an open $16k claimer at one mile over the main track where 5-2-ML favorite #1 Empire Builder was the made the 5-2-ML favorite by oddsmaker Nick Tammaro. The Classic Empire gelding takes a big drop in class for trainer Armando Hernandez after battling early and tiring late in a $62,500 claimer at Oaklawn Park in mid-March. The Florida-bred has the speed to control the early pace from his inside draw, but one has to wonder if he will be at his best on the multiple level drop. He certainly is capable of taking this field gate-to-wire with his best, but I do not trust him, so I will try to beat him with #8 National Eclipse. The son of Alternation was claimed by trainer Robertino Diodoro and Flying P Stable after his stalk and fade effort against better at Fair Grounds. He cuts back to one-turn, draws favorably to the far outside in this field of 8, and attracts Irad Ortiz, Jr. He should get a perfect stalking trip off the likely pacesetter. Hopefully, the foundation of the route events in New Orleans this winter allows him to out finish this bunch.

Play: #8 National Eclipse (7-2 ML)

      Race 3:
My next spot play comes in this MSW event for 2YO fillies at 4.5-furlongs over the main track where I will try a long shot. #1 Barometric makes her first career start for trainer Tim Hamm. Hamm does not sport big numbers when shipping 2YOs into Louisville at first asking, but has proven capable nonetheless. Hamm sends out this Frosted filly who is out of a Harlan’s Holiday mare that won on debut at Churchill Downs in early May ’16 over this same surface and distance. Barometric will have to break well from her inside draw, but has the right man in the saddle in Luis Saez. If Saez can do his thing and get his mount out of the gate in good order, the Runnymoore Racing runner has precocity in the blood and can take the shortest distance into the quick run into the turn with a clean start.

      Play: #1 Barometric (15-1 ML)

      Race 8:
My final play of the Wednesday before Derby card comes in this $50k starter at 7-furlongs over the main track where #3 Sharons Beach was made the 5-2-ML choice after a runner-up effort as the chalk in a similar spot at Keeneland three weeks ago. Trainer Jonathan Thomas adds blinkers to this son of Omaha Beach who has burnt a lot of money thus far. I will hope to stalk off Sharons Beach and take control at the top of the lane with #4 Mo Work. The 4YO gelding aims to make it two wins in a row after being claimed out of a $40k N2L spot just 13 days ago for trainer Mark Simms Jr. Simms protects his new gelding and retains the services of Luis Saez. If he can avoid major regression off the career best run in Lexington, he should be in a perfect spot to make it back-to-back victories for his new barn.

Play: #4 Mo Work (4-1 ML)

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Churchill Downs - Race #6
#8 Bourbon Town He ran a good one when second in the debut try, and he draws well to stay close while keeping tabs on the quicker players early. Reasonable alternative to the heavy hitters from the Ward barn.
#4 Waggley She and #2 Skara Babe both turned in popular debut scores for a team that runs the show with these types -- might be silly to try to play against them, but this one gets the better draw to hassle her stablemate from the outside.
#6 Frontline Fury She couldn't hang with Waggley in the debut run, but some upside off that might be enough to get her in the frame for a piece at a decent price.
Race Summary Bourbon Town took some cash in the debut run and turned in a pretty solid effort, but still one that will be overshadowed by the pair of sharp Ward entrants. Price might be OK to see if he's got a small step forward in him to play here.
        Churchill Downs - Race #7
#10 Rosato The turf form is reliable enough to think she'll bring another good shot, and she wasn't too far off Shoot It True in that last one, and that filly is the one to beat here.
#2 Shoot It True Probably making lots of mistakes by opposing these tough Ward runners in consecutive races, but even with the layoff, I think she was supposed to bring something a tiny touch better than she did at 44 cents on the dollar last time out. Obviously capable, but I don't think she has to win this.
#9 Roja She's got the speed to sit close in a race without an overload of early pace, and that should leave her in a perfect spot to press and finish. Dangerous alternative.
Race Summary Fun race -- think Rosato fits well with this crew as what may be something like the third choice on the board, and she has done really honest work in her Kentucky turf races. Might sustain that move just a bit better today.
        Churchill Downs - Race #9
#5 Interceptor He seems to be getting better as the distance tests increase, and his tactical pace will keep him in a good spot to spy the pace. He is meeting a couple of tough distance customers here, but that may help keep the price playable as we see what he's made of with this kind of crew.
#4 Digital Ops Pace has been in the picture with a couple of the logical players, and he's at least a mild threat to scoot clear and post an upset on the engine. Needs a couple things to go his way.
#1 No Bien Ni Mal He and the guy just outside of him are key players in here with the best recent distance resumes on paper, but this one will have to fire fresh against these. Think the price may stay OK if you like him thanks to the presence of Parchment Party.
Race Summary No disrespect to Parchment Party, who has rattled off three in a row in dirt marathons, but I wonder if a couple of these might at least be in the frame if they can bring their best stuff. Interceptor should find a good trip off the solid second in stakes company, and the new barn has had him going well all winter. Midrange upset?

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#2 ALL ABOUT ME (6-1) It’s all about getting a lively pace to rally into at a good price.
#9 DAN’S CANDI GIRL (5-2 Strictly one to beat, wouldn’t expect 5-2 odds.
#3 HONEY RED (5-1) Nearing $100k in Horseshoe earnings but hasn’t won in a long time.
Race Summary With a fast pace all but assured in this 5-1/2F sprint, ALL ABOUT ME could pick up the pieces and become the group leader with eight wins. She rallied for three sprint victories on a different surface at Presque Isle downs last summer and offers enough value for a win and place wager. Also play a 2-9 exacta box.
          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#3 GREY ECLIPSE (4-1) Will he ‘bounce’ or move forward off much-improved seasonal debut?
#7 DARKESTACHIEVEMENT (6-1) Could be forwardly placed a long way from favorable post.
#1 CONCHO’S PRAYER (5-2) Steady check-getter but been burning money along the way.
Race Summary GREY ECLIPSE was well-beaten in a five-horse allowance, but he earned the top speed figure in the field off a six-month layoff. No reason to think he can’t win for a top barn, getting a 9-pound weight break. Bet to win and place and play a 3, 7/1, 3, 7/ALL trifecta.
          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #4
#9 MOR SUCCESS (8-1) Seeks more of the same on class rise after sharp sprint victory.
#4 ME AND CHILI (5-1) Good form since February, plenty of back-class to summon.
#1 SOUND DOCTRINE (7-2) Has speed and the rail but hasn’t raced since August claim.
Race Summary MOR SUCCESS ran his two best races in winning his last two sprint appearances at the track. He posted a gaudy 79 Beyer to win two weeks ago and remained eligible for this race under the nw/4 condition. His winning time was 2/5 faster than a same-day 2X allowance for Indiana breds. Bet to win and place and play a 9-ALL exacta.

                Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,900 Class Rating: 79

                Rating:

                #8 SPECIALIZED (ML=9/2)
                #9 IRONCLAD ALIBI (ML=5/1)

SPECIALIZED - Ran last time around the track against tougher competition at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. The move to a lower level should suit him well. Has run good races in the first or second starts back off of a layoff. Barbaran is reunited today with this equine after enjoying some pretty nice success riding in the past. Gorham gets a break on this animal carrying 5 pounds less than last out. Certainly could make the difference right here. IRONCLAD ALIBI - I like that recent contest on April 10th at Mahoning Valley Race Cour where he finished second. Should do well in today's race. Weight shift of -5 from April 10th race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FAST AND FRIENDLY (ML=5/2), #7 GRAY DAY (ML=4/1), #1 CORNER OFFICE (ML=6/1),

FAST AND FRIENDLY - Hasn't been on the Thistledown oval in the last 3 weeks. Cause for some concern. GRAY DAY - 4/1 odds isn't enough for this entrant when looking at the most recent efforts. CORNER OFFICE - He showed not much at all in the last race. Finished fourth in his most recent race with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - SPECIALIZED - I believe there is a good probability this gelding could win easy based on a strong closing kick.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #8 SPECIALIZED to win if you can get odds of 3/2 or more
                EXACTA WAGERS: Box [8,9]
                TRIFECTA WAGERS: Pass

                  # 11 AYDEN'S EDGE 5/1
                  # 7 MUSICAL BAND 3/1
I think about METAIRIE here. Must be considered based on the very good speed fig put up in the last race. AYDEN'S EDGE - Could best this group of horses based on the speed figure - 67 - of his last contest. He has put up formidable figs under today's conditions and will probably fare well versus this field.

                    Race 5 - Allowance - 330y on the Dirt. Purse: $25000 Class Rating: 74

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 1 DISTINCTIVE ONE 12/1
                    # 7 SAN LORENZO ZOOM 9/2
                    # 2 DLJFAMOUSFREIGNTRAIN 15/1
I think DISTINCTIVE ONE is a very strong selection especially at such a decent 12/1. Should expect a much stronger effort with the drop. Has some positive angles which make this entrant a bet. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figures in short races lately. SAN LORENZO ZOOM - Vaunts formidable Speed Figures on average overall when put alongside the rest of this group. This rider and conditioner team has produced some solid return on investment numbers at this track. DLJFAMOUSFREIGNTRAIN - Strong pick to take this race going in a short. Put up a solid speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair.

Tampa Bay Downs - Race #3 - Post: 1:35pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $23,000 Class Rating: 63

                      Rating:

                      #2 GRANDPA'S ACE (ML=12/1)

GRANDPA'S ACE - I really like sprinters that make a quick turnaround. The ROI when Quinonez and Padilla partner up is good. I have to like this gelding's chances of winning at the shorter distance.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #5 BILLYSUNDENIABLE (ML=7/5), #6 STRATEGICOPERATION (ML=2/1), #3 ILLUSTRATION (ML=7/2),

BILLYSUNDENIABLE - The fourth place finish in the last race was not the greatest. STRATEGICOPERATION - If he goes off near the morning line odds of 2/1, I'll have to pass. ILLUSTRATION - Finished fourth in his most recent performance with a most unsatisfactory speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 GRANDPA'S ACE to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better
