Poinsettia Bowl: What Bettors Need To Know

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs. TCU Horned Frogs (-9.5, 55.5)

            POINSETTIA BOWL STORYLINES

            1. Two surprise conference champions riding seven-game winning streaks square off in the Poinsettia Bowl. No. 15 TCU finished with a perfect record in the Mountain West, including a dramatic victory over preseason favorite Boise State, to claim its third consecutive title. Louisiana Tech — picked to finish fourth in the WAC — dethroned preseason favorite Hawaii to claim its first conference title.

            2. From a motivational standpoint, the Bulldogs might have an advantage. They’re making just their sixth bowl appearance and first since 2008, while the Horned Frogs will play in a bowl for the seventh consecutive season on the heels of back-to-back BCS bowl appearances.

            3. These teams feature very similar playmakers on the defensive side of the ball. TCU linebacker Tank Carder was named the Mountain West’s Defensive Player of the Year for the second straight season, while Louisiana Tech’s Adrien Cole earned the same honor in the WAC after posting 121 tackles, 12 of which were for loss.

            TV: 8 p.m. ET, ESPN

LINE: TCU opened as high as -11, but has been bet down to 9.5. The total opened 55.5 and has climbed to 56 at some shops.

WEATHER: Fog is in the forecast for Qualcomm Stadium, with game-time temperatures in the high 59s.

ABOUT TCU (10-2, 7-0 Mountain West Conference, 6-6 ATS): After losing eight starters from 2010, including quarterback Andy Dalton, the Horned Frogs’ offense was expected to struggle this year. But that hasn’t been the case at all as sophomore quarterback Casey Pachall filled the hole left by Dalton by tossing 24 touchdowns to only six interceptions. TCU finished ninth nationally with 41.7 points per game, but all that success led to one drawback — co-offensive coordinator Justin Fuente left the program to become the head coach at Memphis, which has won only five combined games in the past three seasons.

ABOUT LOUISIANA TECH (8-4, 6-1 Western Athletic Conference, 10-2 ATS): The outlook was bleak for second-year coach Sonny Dykes when his Bulldogs stumbled out of the gates in 2011 with a 1-4 start. But Louisiana Tech steamrolled through the back half of the schedule, winning seven straight games, five of which came by double digits. Dykes was named the WAC Coach of the Year, helping engineer an offense that averaged 30.6 points and 398 yards, both in the top 50 nationally. Junior quarterback Colby Cameron took over for injured freshman Nick Isham five games ago, and since that point the Bulldogs scored 35 points per game on 445 total yards.

            TRENDS:

            * Bulldogs are 5-0 ATS in their last five non-conference games.
            * Horned Frogs are 0-6 ATS in their last six non-conference games.
            * Under is 4-1 in Bulldogs last five non-conference games.
            * Under is 7-0-1 in Horned Frogs last eight Bowl games.

PREDICTION: TCU 30, Louisiana Tech 28. The Horned Frogs will have enough firepower to come away with a victory, but this one will be a fight to the end.

              Wednesday's Best CFB Bet

Louisiana Tech Bulldogs vs. TCU Horned Frogs (-9.5, 55.5)

The Louisiana Tech Bulldogs will put their current seven-game winning streak on the line next Wednesday night when they take-on the TCU Horned Frogs in this year’s San Diego County Credit Union’s Poinsettia Bowl at Qualcomm Stadium. This Western Athletic-Mountain West clash of conference champions is slated for an 8 p.m. (ET) start and the game will be broadcast nationally on ESPN.

Louisiana Tech ran its current winning streak to seven games by closing-out the regular season with 44-0 shutout of New Mexico State as a 23-point home favorite. The win also raised its record to 8-4 straight-up on the year and a very profitable 10-2 against the spread. The total stayed ‘under’ in seven of its 12 games this season.

This season has been the tale of two teams after a 1-4 SU start, but the Bulldogs have been able to turn things around behind a passing game that has averaged 247.1 yards a game. They may need an even bigger effort through the air, if their leading rusher, Lennon Creer is unable to return from an ankle injury he sustained a few weeks back.

TCU comes into this game at 10-2 SU (6-6 ATS) overall and a perfect 7-0 SU in conference play. The total has gone ‘over’ in nine of its 12 games this year. Despite the record, the Horned Frogs have to feel they took a major step backwards this season after being a BCS-caliber team the past few years. This season, they were never able to get out of the shadow of an early October 40-33 overtime loss to SMU as 13-point home favorites, which is part of the reason they were relegated to a mid-December bowl appearance despite their past resume.

None the less, TCU is still a force to be reckoned with behind a rushing attack that is averaging 210.2 yards a game and an offense that is ranked ninth in the nation in scoring with 41.7 points a game. Combined with a solid defense that has held its opponents to 21.3 points a game, it will be a tall task for Bulldogs to keep this game close for all four quarters.

Louisiana Tech is 5-0 ATS in its last five non-conference games and 6-0 ATS in its last six games as an underdog. The total has stayed ‘under’ in five of its last seven games overall.

TCU is 0-6 ATS in its last six games outside the conference and 0-4 ATS in its last four games as a favorite at a neutral site. The total has stayed ‘under’ in seven of its last eight bowl games.

Despite the mismatch on paper, look for the Bulldogs to use the momentum from their seven-game run to give the Horned Frogs all they can handle. In the end, TCU walks away with the win, but the play is on Louisiana Tech to cover with the 10.5 points.

              PICK: Louisiana Tech +10.5

Preview: Cal Poly SLO at De Paul

Cal Poly SLO Mustangs at De Paul Blue Demons (-2.5, 130)

THE STORY: DePaul has one more tune-up game before Big East play begins at the end of the month, and welcomes Cal Poly SLO to the Allstate Arena on Wednesday in a matchup of 8-3 squads. The Blue Demons will try to extend their winning streak to five. The Mustangs are on a run of their own, taking a three-game winning streak into Rosemont, and boasting their best start in 10 seasons. This is the first meeting between these programs.

TV: 8:30 p.m. ET, No TV

ABOUT CAL POLY SLO (8-3): The Mustangs look like they could be for real in the Big West Conference, and could tie the school’s record for the best start with a victory. Cal Poly has gotten the job done with defense, allowing just 53.9 points, which ranks sixth in Division I. The Mustangs are led by David Hanson, who tops the team with 11 points per game, and Dylan Royer, the Big West’s top 3-point shooter. Royer averages eight points and is knocking down 60.5 percent of his shots from outside.

ABOUT DEPAUL (8-3): The Blue Demons have put together a strong showing despite some major injuries to the frontcourt. DePaul will be without 6-foot-9 forward Donnavan Kirk for an indefinite period due to back problems, and are without slasher Tony Freeland (shoulder) and freshman Montray Clemons (knee) for the season. Those missing pieces haven’t stopped DePaul from producing its best start since the 2005-06 season. The Blue Demons are scoring a ton, delivering than 79 points per game behind the play of Cleveland Melvin, who is averaging 18.7.

                TIP-INS:

                1. Cal Poly hasn’t faced a current Big East opponent since losing 69-62 to Seton Hall on Dec. 12, 1973.

                2. DePaul coach Oliver Purnell is reaping the benefits of his pressure defense. The Blue Demons force an average of 20 turnovers.

                3. The Mustangs are tough on the boards, either equaling or outrebounding opponents in nine of their 11 games. They rank 18th in rebounding margin at plus-8 and are 7-0 when they win the battle on the glass.

Texas Longhorns at North Carolina Tar Heels (-12, 154.5)

There’s no questioning the Tar Heels’ talent, but their focus is a work in progress.

North Carolina has dropped two of its last three against the spread and looked sluggish in its last game against Nicholls State before pulling away to cover the fat 38.5-point line.

"We knew he was very frustrated, especially at halftime," senior Tyler Zeller told reporters of coach Roy Williams. "He came in, and said a lot of things that were very true - something that we can't be that lax when we go out and play. We've got to be able to play with intensity."

The message didn’t get through until Williams benched his entire starting five in the second half. He put them back in with about 11 minutes left on the clock and they went on a 16-1 run to secure a 99-46 win.

The Longhorns are dealing with similar issues as they start three freshman and have dropped four of the six games that have seen a pointspread. This could be a learning experience for Texas against a refocused Tar Heels squad.

                  PICK: North Carolina

Cal Poly SLO Mustangs at De Paul Blue Demons (-2.5, 130)

De Paul has one more tune-up game before Big East play begins at the end of the month, and welcomes Cal Poly SLO to the Allstate Arena on Wednesday.

The Blue Demons have put together a strong showing despite some major injuries to the frontcourt. De Paul will be without 6-foot-9 forward Donnavan Kirk for an indefinite period due to back problems, and are without slasher Tony Freeland (shoulder) and freshman Montray Clemons (knee) for the season.

Those missing pieces haven’t stopped De Paul from producing its best start since the 2005-06 season. The Blue Demons are scoring a ton, delivering than 79 points per game behind the play of Cleveland Melvin, who is averaging 18.7.

The Mustangs have held teams to just 53.9 points per game so far this year, but they haven’t seen an offense like this yet.

                  PICK: Over 130

                    Bolts at Sharks Preview
                    By Peter Pupello

Tampa Bay Lightning at San Jose Sharks (-180, 5.5)

SEASON SERIES: The Bolts and Sharks square off for the first of two meetings on the year. San Jose will pay a return visit to Tampa Bay on Feb. 16 to conclude the season series. Last season, the Sharks took the only matchup by a 5-2 score on home ice.

THE BIG STORY: Tampa Bay is coming off consecutive wins for the first time since sweeping a home and home set against the Panthers back on Nov. 25 and 26. Wednesday’s game is also the first of two on the road before the Christmas break for the Lightning, who seek to extend their winning streak to three games prior to Friday’s finale in Colorado as well as finish the stretch on a high note before returning to action next week.

                    TEAM SCOPE:

LIGHTNING: After a brief one-game stint in Columbus on Saturday, the Bolts traveled home Sunday before opening a two-game road trip that begins in San Jose and concludes on Friday against Colorado. The team is starting to look like the one that made it to within one game of the Stanley Cup Finals last spring, earning two straight victories, including Saturday’s matchup against the Blue Jackets by a 3-2 score. Blair Jones and Eric Brewer each scored for Tampa Bay, which held a pair of two-goal leads throughout the contest, but allowed Columbus to come within one each time. Steven Stamkos’ second consecutive game-winner at an opportune time, however, gave the Lightning a 3-1 lead in the second period, and insurance when Blue Jackets captain Rick Nash made it 3-2 just 2:09 later. Mathieu Garon, in his first return to Columbus since being acquired by Tampa Bay, made 26 saves including all eight in the third period to hold his former club scoreless in the final frame and earn the win.

SHARKS: San Jose is a third of the way through on its current six-game home stand, which by all accounts, has gotten off to a good start. The Sharks rebounded from a stretch in which it lost five of six by earning two straight victories to open up the home stand at HP Pavillion last Thursday. After defeating Colorado 5-4 in the first match, it earned the second of the two victories on Saturday, again by a close a margin in a 3-2 win against Edmonton. The teams matched each other goal for goal through the first 40 minutes, with both Martin Havlat and Joe Thornton tallying for the Sharks. Patrick Marleau scored the only goal of the final frame, the game-winner, and Antti Niemi made 23 stops to claim victory.

WHO'S HOT: Steven Stamkos notched the game-winning goal for the second straight time on Saturday at Columbus and has four goals and seven points in his past three games. Both Ryan Malone and Dominic Moore come in with points in four of their past five, while Blair Jones is currently riding a career-high three-game point streak. San Jose’s Patrick Marleau is riding a three-game point streak with a pair of goals and an assist in that span, and Joe Thornton has picked up points in three consecutive games as well, but with a goal and two assists during that stretch.

INJURY REPORT: LIGHTNING – Mattias Ohlund (knee, paced on Injured Reserve), Martin St. Louis (facial and nasal fractures, placed on Injured Reserve), Nate Thompson (lower body, day-to-day) and Matt Gilroy (lower body, day-to-day). SHARKS – Douglas Murray (hand, day-to-day) and Jim Vandermeer (upper body, placed on Injured Reserve.

NOTABLE QUOTABLE: “He's definitely more vocal right now, but he leads by example, by how he plays and he plays hard. He's scored some big goals for us and taken his game to a new level.” – Lightning captain Vincent Lecavalier on the leadership qualities of teammate Steven Stamkos.

CONNECTIONS: Sharks defenseman Dan Boyle skated in 394 career games with the Lightning from 2001-2008 and ranks ninth on the team's all-time scoring list with 253 points...Boyle was traded to San Jose in a deal that brought Matt Carle and Ty Wishart to Tampa Bay...Carle was then sent to Philadelphia in exchange for current Lightning forward Steve Downie, while Wishart was eventually dealt to the Islanders in exchange for current Bolts net minder Dwayne Roloson.

                      Wednesday's Best NHL Bets

Tampa Bay Lightning at San Jose Sharks (-180, 5.5)

When you travel as much as the San Jose Sharks do, you have to make the most of extended home stands.

That’s what they’re looking to do right now as they’re in the middle of a two-week stretch of sleeping in their own beds and it’s been so far so good. The Sharks have won their first two home games on this stretch after dropping Edmonton 3-2 Saturday.

They’ve been off since and used that time to put some work in on their special teams units, which desperately need some attention. The Sharks rank 30th (73.6 percent) on the penalty kill and 14th on the power play.

"I do think that when a power play comes for the other team, you hold your breath a little bit. I'll admit that," coach Todd McLellan told reporters. "But it shouldn't be that way, not with the group we have."

The Lightning are probably thinking the same thing. They sit 24th on the power play (15.2 percent) and 20th on the penalty kill (81.2 percent).

                      PICK: Over 5.5

Detroit Red Wings at Vancouver Canucks (-115, 5.5)

The Vancouver Canucks have been on cruise control lately, winning 11 of their last 14 games. Many are attributing the hot stretch to some hot goaltending from Roberto Luongo after his cold start. He stopped all 33 shots he faced to record his first shutout of the year in a 4-0 win over Minnesota on Monday.

If he gets the call Wednesday, he’ll have to be just as sharp with the Red Wings in town. Detroit has scored 30 goals over its last six games as the third line of Danny Cleary, Darren Helm and Drew Miller continues to improve.

The Wings can usually count on its top two lines for production, but now the club’s third line is getting in on the act. Cleary has seven points in his last five, Helm has six in his last six, and Miller has three goals in the last two games – including Monday’s game-winner over Edmonton.

"We're doing things well, keeping it simple, going forward with the puck, not trying to do too much," Helm told reporters. "All three of us were kind of struggling for a while there ... put a few guys who are struggling together and good things start to happen."

                      PICK: Detroit

                        INJURY THAT SHOULDN'T BE OVERLOOKED

Andre Johnson, Houston Texans - Johnson has been ruled out of Thursday night's game against the Indianapolis Colts. It will be the third straight game missed by Johnson since he suffered a left hamstring injury against the Atlanta Falcons on Dec. 4. The standout wide receiver also missed six games earlier this season for a right hamstring injury that required surgery. Houston (10-4) has already wrapped up the AFC South title and trails the New England Patriots (11-3) and Baltimore Ravens (10-4) for the top two seeds and a first-round bye in the playoffs. Johnson has 31 catches for 471 yards and two touchdowns in six games this season. Oddsmakers have Houston set as a 5.5-point favorite.

                        NOTABLE QUOTABLE

"I think (the Colts are) feeling very good after what happened last week. You know, the Thursday night game gets a lot of attention. We know they'll play well. Like I said, our history in that building hasn't been very good, so we're going to have to go change that and play much better." – Houston Texans coach Gary Kubiak on his team’s matchup with Indianapolis on Thursday evening. The Texans are set as 5.5-point favorites.

                        TIPS AND NOTES

Boston Celtics forward Paul Pierce could be in jeopardy of missing the season opener against the New York Knicks on Christmas Day because of a heel injury. Pierce suffered the bruised heel in the Celtics' first practice and he been watching on the sidelines since. He will not play in Wednesday's preseason finale against the Toronto Raptors that has Boston set as a 5-point favorite. Coach Doc Rivers doesn't think the injury will have a lasting effect but believes Pierce will be limited in the early portion of the schedule. Boston plays three games in four nights to open the lockout-shortened campaign. Pierce averaged 18.9 points and 5.4 rebounds last season

San Jose Sharks right wing Martin Havlat will sit out at least one game with a lower body injury. Havlat injured his left leg while attempting to jump over the boards in Saturday's game against Edmonton. The San Jose Mercury News reported that Havlat was limping and using a walking stick to move around. Sharks coach Todd McLellan ruled Havlat out of Wednesday's matchup against the Tampa Bay Lightning. The 30-year-old Havlat has two goals and 13 assists in 26 games.

North Carolina wide receiver Dwight Jones has been declared ineligible for the Independence Bowl. Jones found himself in trouble after allowing his name and photograph to be used for a party thrown by a family member in his hometown. North Carolina has applied to the NCAA for reinstatement following the secondary violation. A cease-and-desist letter has been sent by the school to the party promoters. Jones, a senior, has 79 catches for 1,119 yards and 11 touchdowns this season. The Tar Heels are set as 5-point underdogs against Missouri.
