    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Thistledown - Race #4
#3 Strike Breaker She showed some brief pace before calling it a day when last seen in November, but she might be quick enough to find the front here while racing fresh. May have a little upside with some maturity into her 3-year-old debut?
#2 Jenn Sweet Jenn She can be tough here, as she's got a pretty decent baseline and isn't meeting a whole lot of imposing form on paper, but she's had plenty of chances and has already come up short multiple times over the local footing, so the Tampa shipper angle isn't even all that appealing. Could roll these, but she's not for me.
#6 Tia Lupe All of her races have come against better groups than she's going to find today, but the form still isn't all that compelling compared to the likely price. Another who can play here.
Race Summary Strike Breaker showed a little bit of pace last year and could be ready for something better in just her third lifetime start. The price should stay fair given the presence of a couple logical players who will take cash off decent form.
    Thistledown - Race #5
#1 Spirit of Akron Think this race is a bit more competitive than the board may suggest, and this one might wind up finding a really nice trip while tucked inside just behind the quicker players early. Interesting.
#5 Coastland He has been basically automatic on the front end through this long winning streak, and he draws well to hassle the other potential pace inside of him. Obvious danger just handled the top choice last out.
#3 Estoico He hasn't been a serious threat in those last two while landing underneath shares, and I suppose he should get an OK tracking trip in this small group today. Not impossible.
Race Summary Spirit of Akron didn't miss by much last out behind Coastland, and I wonder if he can turn the tables after a cozy inside trip today. Fun race.
    Thistledown - Race #8
#6 O G Mr. Brightside He gets into an easier spot today and isn't meeting a whole lot on paper even for this level. Think he'll be able to bounce back with this softer group after coming up empty with allowance types last out.
#3 Calorese His better stuff would make him a handful here as he comes in to try Ohio-bred company with competitive form from Emerald and Turf Paradise. Take your pick.
#4 Balki Bartokomous He hasn't been finishing his races with a ton of energy while managing to hang for shares, but he seems in the mix for a piece of this in a race that isn't all that deep. Still think he'd need a misfire or two if he's going to land it.
Race Summary O G Mr. Brightside and Calorese look like the right pair in here, but I'm hoping the former offers a touch better price today while dropping from allowance company.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Penn National - Race #3
#5 FALFURRIAS (3-1) Tries to emerge with .500 win percentage on turf, projects good journey.
#9 OHIO JOE (5-2) Keeping good company but winless since stakes win on Penn National lawn in August.
#8 GREAT RICHIE M (6-1) Won twice at Saratoga last summer, goes long and on turf for first time.
Race Summary FALFURRIAS returns to his preferred surface and has a solid string of mid-70 Beyer speed figures to call upon. He has long-distance victories on three grass courses and should work out an ideal trip in this spot. Bet to win and place and play 5-8 and 5-9 exactas.
      Penn National - Race #5
#5 COHESIVE (7-2) Has speed, can carry it far in this field and upgrade recent runner-up finish.
#4 A LITTLE PRESLEY (2-1) Grinded long way to finish second, ahead of next-out winner.
#3 STEADY ME HEART (3-1) Odds will tell a lot about Beattie-trained firster with slow works.
Race Summary COHESIVE sprinted clear and held second in her first start for a claiming tag. She earned the top speed figure of her career and might forget to stop in this spot at the same distance. Bet to win and place and play a $1 Pick 3 with numbers 5/1, 2, 3, 4/6.
      Penn National - Race #7
#6 WHISKEY ALLEY (5-2) Rallied past the pace setter at quarter pole, held second after fave passed by.
#4 MENCKE (6-1) Improved in each start through maiden victory in shorter sprint.
#7 RAG MAMA RAG (2-1) Broke maiden at Parx in slow $15,000 race on a muddy track.
Race Summary WHISKEY ALLEY ranged up on the turn and put away the 2-1 pace-setter, but he was no match for the onrushing favorite in the final eighth in his repeat attempt. The fractions were solid and the so is the 5-2 morning-line price. Bet to win and place and play a 4-6-7 exacta box.

Race 8 - Speed Index Race - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $10000 Class Rating: 68

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WITH AN AVERAGE SPEED INDEX OF 90 AND UNDER OR WITH A SPEED INDEX THAT HAS NEVER BEEN BETTER THAN 95.
            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 3 A SHADES OF COLD 2/1
            # 5 NIIGAANII 3/1
            # 4 HAD TO BE FABULOUS 8/5
I think A SHADES OF COLD is a very good choice. Has to be given a chance here on the basis of the numbers in the speed realm alone. Looks formidable versus this group of horses and should be one of the front-runners. Must be carefully examined based on the formidable speed rating put up in the last contest. NIIGAANII - Reid has one of the strongest winning percentages in this group of horses in this race with entries running at this distance and surface. Is a key contender - given the 79 speed fig from his most recent race. HAD TO BE FABULOUS - This filly has been constatntly running well in her latest outings. Has a solid record at the distance and surface, which makes me lean toward this filly.

              # 3 PENITENT 30/1
              # 8 TRUST THE WORD 9/2
YOUNG ANGUS seems to be the bet in here. Ought to be given a shot here on the basis of the figures in the speed department alone. Expect a speed boost today from this horse going on blinkers. With a respectable 68 speed figure last time out, will surely be a factor in this contest. PENITENT - This jockey and conditioner team has produced some strong ROI numbers at this track. This horse looks like a longshot with a chance. TRUST THE WORD - Competitive selection to take this race going in a dirt sprint. Will make a strong performance versus this bunch.

                Penn National - Race #2 - Post: 6:14pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $22,000 Class Rating: 56

                Rating:

                #2 BLAST OF MISCHIEF (ML=3/1)

BLAST OF MISCHIEF - When Rodriguez and Kulp partner up on equines the win pct has been terrific at 32. Looks like the lone speed of the race. Should be tough on the front-end. I have to believe that this shorter distance should help this filly. The April 9th event at Penn National was at a class level of (61). Dropping down in the class scale a significant amount, so she should be in a good spot. The recent speed figure of 56 is the top last race speed fig in the field.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #5 THISISHOWWEDOIT (ML=2/1), #4 QUIET CITY (ML=4/1), #1 TINKER BULL (ML=9/2),

THISISHOWWEDOIT - Usually I need a sprinter to have some recent success in sprint affairs in order to wager on her. QUIET CITY - This horse showed little last out finishing third. Don't expect any improvement today. TINKER BULL - This racer showed very little last time out finishing third. Can't expect a reversal of fortune in today's event. Don't feel this less than sharp equine will do much running in today's race. That last speed rating was mediocre when compared with today's class figure.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Turf Man - BLAST OF MISCHIEF - This trainer Kulp's successes transferring horses from dirt to grass make this thoroughbred an extremely solid pick in this affair.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #2 BLAST OF MISCHIEF is the play if we get odds of 1/1 or better
                EXACTA WAGERS: 2 with 3

                  Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $19,400 Class Rating: 54

                  Rating:

                  #3 CALORESE (ML=9/5)
                  #4 BALKI BARTOKOMOUS (ML=3/1)

CALORESE - This horse seems to run pretty good after a layoff. He got a decent speed rating the last time he tried this distance. This horse garnered a nice speed fig of 62 in his last clash. That speed rating should be good enough to triumph today. BALKI BARTOKOMOUS - Have to make this gelding a strong challenger; he comes off a nice race on Apr 10th. Meyers has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to watch out for the longer priced half. Getting a break of 5 pounds from last race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. He should make the most of this advantage.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 O G MR. BRIGHTSIDE (ML=2/1), #7 HE'S MY BOY (ML=8/1),

O G MR. BRIGHTSIDE - Not likely for this entrant to make an impact with no recent success in a short distance contest. Doesn't look inspiring to me after the lack of any kind of closing talent on Apr 21st. Finished seventh in his most recent performance with a substandard speed figure. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this field. HE'S MY BOY - This gelding is always hitting the board, but just doesn't get the job done. Tough to invest in him on the top end. This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last two efforts.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 CALORESE to win at post-time odds of 7/5 or better
