Meet the Contenders: Friday’s Black-Eyed Susan Stakes at La

    May 11, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

The fillies chase history in Friday's Grade 2 $300,000 Black-Eyed Susan Stakes, a race more than a century old that will be run at Laurel Park for the first time. It's featured on a 14-race card that gets underway at 11:30 am ET and also boasts the Pimlico Special among a series of stakes to launch Preakness Weekend.

Horseplayers with 1/ST BET and Xpressbet take advantage of up to a $10,000 Exacta-Thon promotion for Friday’s Laurel Park – and another $10,000 on Saturday. Hit exactas on 5 or more races on the program to earn your share of the $10,000 in bonus money ($2 wager minimum per exacta).

Let’s meet the contenders for the Black-Eyed Susan Stakes (Race 13):

#1-MISS FULTON GAL: Winner of Laurel’s Beyond the Wire Stakes looks to rebound off a fourth-place prep in the local Weber City Miss Stakes. Jockey John Velazquez picks up the mount for the first time for trainer Mike Gorham. $35K daughter of Santa Anita Derby winner Rock Your World proved a bargain with nearly $160K earned.

#2-IVY GIRL: Belmont-based filly has scored road wins in 2 straight, first Parx’s Main Line Stakes and most recently Laurel’s Weber City Miss. Jockey Victor Carrasco returns in the saddle after pulling a 27-1 upset last out for trainer Amelia Green, a fomer Todd Pletcher assistant. Filly is from the first crop of Maxfield, which also includes Danon Bourbon, Englishman and Black-Eyed Susan rival Holly’s Holiday.

#3-HOLLY’S HOLIDAY: Strong close to the Oaklawn racing season with a maiden victory and a 21-1 upset score in the Valley of the Vapors Stakes. The Kenny McPeek trainee had a non-descript freshman season but comes into the Black-Eyed Susan on the ascent. Flavien Prat takes the controls for the first time aboard this Maxfield filly. Prat guided Margie’s Intention to victory in last year’s Black-Eyed Susan and can become the first back-to-back winner since Javier Castellano in 2014-’15. She will carry top weight of 122 pounds under the stakes conditions.

#4-SAVOR IT: $5,000 bargain Vino Rosso filly exits an allowance victory at her Parx homebase. Trainer Uriah St. Lewis teams again with the Philly connections as Mychel Sanchez retains the mount. She’s 2-for-8 and has been well-beaten in both career stakes bids to date. St. Lewis best-known for upsetting 2018 Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup with 45-1 bomber Discreet Lover.

#5-BRAKEN POPPA: Dominant filly in the Louisiana-bred sophomore class, she’s won 4 straight, including back-to-back stakes. Steve Asmussen trains the $80K daughter of Auerlius Mamimus, who wintered at Fair Grounds before changing locales to Churchill Downs. Kentucky Derby-winning jockey Jose Ortiz was aboard in her Crescent City Oaks victory in late March and returns to the saddle. Both seek their first Black-Eyed Susan victories.

#6-HAUTE DIVA: Joins Miss Fulton Gal as the most-experienced members of the lineup, making her tenth career start Friday. Patrick Biancone’s Florida-based filly won Gulfstream’s Cash Run Stakes on New Year’s Day but was soundly beaten in the Davona Dale and Gulfstream Oaks. Daughter of Florida Derby winner Constitution finished up the track in last year’s Alcibiades at Keeneland in her only prior start away from Gulfstream. Keith Asmussen rides.

#7-JUMPING THE GUN: Beaten favorite in the Weber City Miss when third at 6-5 odds, this Gun Runner filly looks to make amends in her second start of 2026. The Andew Simoff trainee closed her juvenile season third in the Grade 2 Demoiselle at Aqueduct. Luis Saez takes the call for the first time on this Delaware Park-based filly who won the Blue Hen and Small Wonder at her home track last summer.

#8-MAJESTIC LUCIA: Florida-based trainer Victor Barboza Jr. takes a class hike and road trip with this daughter of McKinzie. She’s the most lightly raced member of the field with just 3 prior starts, including back-to-back wins in maiden and allowance company. Junior Alvarado piloted her to the maiden score at Gulfstream 2 starts back and reunites in the saddle.

#9-A.P.’S GIRL: Trainer Peter Eurton returns this filly from her Kentucky base for a second straight start, shipping in to finish a close second in the Weber City Miss Stakes last month. Filly by Honor A.P. has found her groove after starting 0-for-5, winning twice prior to her initial stakes try at Laurel. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has the mount for the first time.

#10-MY MISS MO: Trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. entered her in the Kentucky Oaks but was forced to miss the race for an undisclosed reason and scratched. The Gulfstream Park Oaks runner-up has worked 3 furlongs since (May 10 in :35-4/5) and will try to get back on track at Laurel. She’s been first or second in 4 of 5 career starts, all in Florida to date, and will have regular rider Tyler Gaffalione back in the saddle. The $320K Uncle Mo filly was the most expensive auction buy in the lineup.

Scott Shapiro: Churchill Downs "Downs After Dark" Spot Plays

      May 15, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The racing in Maryland certainly takes center stage this weekend, but there is also very strong action throughout the country on Preakness Day. One of the better betting cards outside of Laurel Park is at Churchill Downs where they have a special “Downs After Dark” event. The racing begins at 6PM eastern and is headlined by the Louisville (G3), which goes as Race 8 and goes to post at 9:39 PM. Here are a few horses I like most on Saturday night in the Blue Grass.

      Race 2:
My first play of the evening comes in this MSW event for the ladies where I will try second-time starter #4 Teatonic. Trainer Michael McCarthy debuted this Keeneland September 2024 purchase late last June in the first 6-furlong MSW affair of the year for 2YO fillies in Kentucky. The daughter of Yaupon chased a hot pace that day, finished a disappointing sixth, and has been on the sidelines since. McCarthy opts to bring her back in an easier spot than she encountered at first asking nearly 11 months ago. If she is ready to fire off the layoff, I am hopeful she gets the jump on and has enough left late to beat 9-5-ML favorite #11 Movie Night. Gerardo Corrales will take the call.

      Play: #4 Teatonic (9-2 ML)

      Race 4:
This first-level allowance at 1 1/16-miles over the Churchill Downs lawn is one of the better betting races on the card. I will key around #7 Chambersville. The Shortleaf Stable homebred was part of the string that Kenny McPeek took to Saratoga last summer and has made two starts as a 3YO. Both resulted in third-place efforts, including last out when he returned to the grass and put in a better than looks performance from off-the-pace. Jockey Jose Ortiz had the Twirling Candy colt last early off a two-month break before opting to make a four-wide middle move. This strategy was obviously not plan A from Ortiz, but the fact Chambersville was able to try to the wire still earning third at odds of 16-1 says a lot about his stamina. This should serve him well in this spot, especially if veteran Manny Esquivel can save ground early before coming with this guy’s run in the lane. If so, he has a big chance to earn career win number two.

      Play: #7 Chambersville (5-1 ML)

      Race 6:
My final spot play of the Downs After Dark card comes in this $141,000 allowance at two-turns over the sod where I like #4 In the Stars. The well-bred daughter of Into Mischief moves up in class after winning by a nose off the layoff at Keeneland on April 10. The arrow is pointing up on this Rusty Arnold trainee that ran better than looks in the Miss Revere (G2) in November and has proven twice she can finish well over this surface. Edgar Morales gets the leg up with Luis Saez in Maryland for the Preakness.

Play: #4 In the Stars (4-1 ML)

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

        May 15, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

        XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

The Meadowlands has a 14-race card and the Early Pick 4 starts in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track

        Race 6 (8:40 PM EDT)

5-Mr Mouton (4-1)-Dexter Dunn steers for Ake Svansted and they post 26% winners when they combine. Will use off the 5-1 qualifier, when it was used aggressively and gave way down the lane. Has hit the board in 3 of 4 at M1 and should be forwardly placed.
7-Bravo Angel S (5/2)-Fired hot off the bench, won its debut at M1, then beat the Invites at Yonkers twice. Jason Bartlett is at the controls, and it has won 3-times in 15 races at East Rutherford. Could beat this crew coming off cover as the fractions should be lively.

        Race 7 (9:05 PM EDT)

4-Reamarkable De Vie (6-1)-Beat easier handily coming off cover and missed a start due to a sick scratch. Has hit the board in 6 of 13 at M1 with 2 pictures. This will be a test, but the price is right to take a swing.
5-Calderone (5/2)-Finished a beaten 3rd and went a 55.3 back half but the fractions were slow, they went to the half in .58. This is a softer spot and could be sitting on a big try.
7-Cal Miles N Shells (6-1)-Recent form has been dull but did show some life at Phl in last. Tried to go gate to wire and faded. Drops to a competitive level, tries a large oval and Dunn gets the call. Should be a good price, could get a good early seat and be in the mix down the lane.

        Race 8 (9:30 PM EDT)

2-Miki In Luv (5/2)-Comes off a powerful mile leaving from post 8. Set a new mark of 150.3 and sealed it off with a 27.3 last panel. Takes on better but if brings the same effort it should lead to another picture.
8-Blue Point (10-1)-Comes off 2 sharp efforts at Philly which were the initial starts this year. Looks like a price shot that should be a big # with this post draw. This mare has won 2 of 3 at M1 and had a 150.2 mark here in 2025. Can take some air and fits with this crew.

        Race 9 (9:55 PM EDT)

7-My Philomene (9/2)-Qualified on 4-3 and didn't race until 5-2. Put in a good effort considering it was its 1st race this year and faced stakes company. Scott Zeron steers again, had breaking issues last year and stayed flat in a quick mile in its season debut. Showed good speed last time and will look for an even better effort in her 5th lifetime start.

        $2 Late Pick 4

        5,7/4,5,7/2,8/7
        Total Bet=$24

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #5
#3 Proletariat He's back fresh while getting back to a turf sprint for the first time since the graduation run, and he wasn't embarrassed in those Grade III tries to close out his juvenile campaign.
#2 Tap the Gin He looked pretty good in the debut score when handling five others, and any reasonable move forward off that one would make him a handful in this small group.
#1 Killourney Reigns He and the guy drawn widest of all both make their first respective American starts for the same barn, so check them out on the track and see if anyone looks ready to roll. Consider.
Race Summary Proletariat showed a little bit of class when landing a couple of graded placings last year, and he already owns a turf sprint win, so the cutback off the bench isn't much of a worry.
Santa Anita Park - Race #7
#4 Hypergamy She has been a fringe underneath stakes type on the turf and should appreciate the surface switch after finishing up the track in the Santa Anita Oaks on the dirt. Worth a long look in her first try with winners outside of stakes company.
#1 Struck By Her She gets a two-turn trip for the first time here, and she seems like a player here on baseline form if she's able to transfer the finishing sprint runs to this longer trip.
#5 Peanutbutterbombe She finished just in front of the top choice when they met in that December stakes spot, and she has the right kind of pace to put herself in a good spot into the far turn. In the mix.
Race Summary Hypergamy races with Lasix for the first time while dropping out of a string of stakes runs, and that may be enough to get her over the top in a pretty fun race for the level.
Santa Anita Park - Race #9
#9 Imaboutago Think she's in the mix in a pretty competitive race, and she might find an OK kind of spying run from out here. She has been able to hold her own against a few decent names.
#8 Lee's Baby Girl Her sprint form has been pretty honest, and she might be an OK price while meeting a few other potential forward players. Could see her hanging around for a share.
#6 Pura Vida Princesa She has maintained pretty solid form and now looks for a third in a row after coming right back to beat winners in that first try last time around. Can't count her out again.
Race Summary Imaboutago and Lee's Baby Girl both offer some midrange price appeal with different running styles -- might be a decent and mildly aggressive two-deep stand.

            #6
            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Woodbine - Race #1
#7 CUT ‘EM LOOSE (6-1) Won in second start off Fall freshening, can use his speed well from the outside.
#4 BOLD RELOAD (2-1) Good long-sprint form at this level, runs for Adams, picks up 4 pounds.
#1 DIVINE LEADER (5-2) ‘Loose’ stablemate tries to recapture some of form that led to $339k bankroll.
Race Summary The entire field arrives off of subpar efforts. CUT ‘EM LOOSE has good speed from a favorable post, cuts back to a short sprint and should benefit from a useful seasonal debut. He’s worth a win and place bet at a decent price. Also play a 1-4-7 exacta box.
            Woodbine - Race #2
#2 ROCK HARD ROSE (4-1) Seeks fourth consecutive victory at home track, gets ideal set-up.
#5 SOUPERGIRL (7-5) Wheels right back in same spot as romp to the top speed figure of her career.
#3 HOLIDAY WITH AMY (6-1) Low-60 Beyer type doesn’t win much but can rally for minor awards.
Race Summary ROCK HARD ROSE re-awakened on her return to Woodbine’s all-weather surface, rallying to a popular victory at 5-1/2F. The pace should be every bit as fast in this field and the extra half-furlong should only help. Bet to win and place and play 2-3 and 2-5 exactas.
            Woodbine - Race #4
#8 SOBIECH (3-1) Chased runaway on speed-favoring strip, should be the target in this field.
#4 WHERE’S SAMNBAILEY (2 Can upgrade minor checks on class drop, long series of works for return.
#1 TANZANITE LILY (4-1) Rallied to finish 1-2-3 when pace was quicker than :46 flat.
Race Summary SOBIECH chased the 9-to-5 winner and finished a distant second at odds-on on a day when speed dominated. She should get the jump on her main rivals today and can handle a longer sprint as she did when breaking her maiden. Bet to win and place and play 8-1 and 8-4 exactas.

                    # 4 OBLITERATION 6/5
                    # 6 SHANE'S WONDER 3/1
                    # 3 BUDS NOTION 12/1
OBLITERATION gets the edge as the bet in here. This colt ought to be given a shot just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint events alone. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the most competitive class figures of this group. He has put up very strong numbers under today's conditions and should fare well against this group of horses. SHANE'S WONDER - Has performed quite well as of late in sprint races, posting a nifty 93 avg speed figure. Ought to come out sharp - I have liked the way this gelding has moved rapidly to the lead recently. BUDS NOTION - Make a note that this entrant runs now going off Lasix today. Trainer boasts solid win numbers at this distance and surface.

                      Woodbine - Race #6 - Post: 4:02pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $56,100 Class Rating: 84

                      Rating:

                      #2 SPIRIT BEAR (ML=6/1)
                      #6 SUPER SICILY (ML=2/1)
                      #4 DANCETOTHERHYTHM (ML=8/1)
                      #5 MORE MONEY HUNNY (ML=5/2)

SPIRIT BEAR - Got to appreciate a good work horse. This mare's last work was second fastest of the day for the distance. Based on the TrackMaster data I've reviewed, this mare should run well off the layoff. This jockey/trainer duo has been producing a very favorable ROI, right at +90. SUPER SICILY - This mare is in fine physical condition, having run a nice race on April 18th, finishing third. Mare is a few starts into a return here. Should give a top effort today. DANCETOTHERHYTHM - Don't often see a beneficial ROI like +27. This rider/trainer tandem has done well together over the last twelve months. The 85 latest race speed rating looks good in black and white. MORE MONEY HUNNY - I believe that today's shorter distance should help this mare. This thoroughbred earns a lot of money per race around the track. I believe she will boost the lifetime bankroll in today's race.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #7 TANDHONEYWITHANE (ML=4/1), #3 VERDEJO (ML=8/1),

TANDHONEYWITHANE - Hasn't hit the board in any short distance affairs recently. Doubtful to see her doing it today either. Not probable for this pony to do much this time. The extended time off is a troublesome sign. VERDEJO - Just cannot bet on this horse. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on December 13th. Don't feel this horse will make an impact today. That last fig was mediocre when compared with today's class figure.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 SPIRIT BEAR to win if we can get at least 5/1 odds
                      EXACTA WAGERS: Box [2,4]
                      TRIFECTA WAGERS: Skip

Lone Star Park - Race #3 - Post: 7:29pm - Optional Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $34,500 Class Rating: 100

                        Rating:

                        #1 AVAILABLE STAR (ML=9/2)
                        #3 THAT'S RIGHT (ML=8/1)
                        #4 INNOVA (ML=4/1)

AVAILABLE STAR - If you review the PP's for this racer, you'll see he has recorded the top speed fig at the distance and surface. A repeat effort in this event and this horse has a superb chance to win. Of all the entrants in today's race only this gelding has won over this turf course. This gelding has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Ramirez-Rodriguez. Better beware of this angle. Have to give this gelding a good chance. Ran a nice race last time out within the last month or so. THAT'S RIGHT - This jock and trainer have a high win pct together. Jacks has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to be wary of the longer priced half. INNOVA - This front running sort should profit from this shorter distance.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 INITIALIZE (ML=2/1), #5 STAYED IN FOR HALF (ML=5/2),

INITIALIZE - The Brain always tells me to stay away from thoroughbreds in sprint races that haven't finished in the money in sprint contests recently. The result of seventh in the last event shows me that this equine may be going off form. Garnered a somewhat easily forgotten rating last out in an Allowance race on April 3rd. Doubtful to see an improved performance off of that rating. STAYED IN FOR HALF - Morning line odds of 5/2 make this thoroughbred a pass by my approach.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #1 AVAILABLE STAR to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/2 or better though
