    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Louisiana Downs - Race #2
#5 No Kid of Mine He has a couple of OK route runs on his page and gets into what feels like a competitive level for the local debut. Think this is a winnable spot, probably at something a bit shorter than the ML offering.
#1 Piastri The local debut was solid enough against a cheaper group, and something similar would probably be tough here if he can reproduce it around two turns. Dangerous.
#2 Downtown Motown He is short on excuses, but something like the two-back run might be enough to keep him in the picture for a piece of this. Drop might help.
Race Summary No Kid of Mine probably doesn't need to come forward much to land this, and he's probably quick enough to work out a good trip while right up on the splits throughout.
    Louisiana Downs - Race #3
#4 Custom Cadillac He's capable of something better than he showed last time out, and he seems like one of the big players if he can rediscover the Fair Grounds form.
#5 God Given He rolled at even-money in the local debut and returns in another logical spot. Guessing he's a handful if he doesn't move back off that one.
#1 Dan D'Oro He's quick enough to find a decent inside tracking trip with these while turning back, and he has turned out to be pretty reliable since he arrived in Louisiana.
Race Summary Custom Cadillac has a handful of tries on his page that would probably get the job done here, he just needs to bounce back a bit off a couple off modest efforts.
    Louisiana Downs - Race #6
#7 Chief Now Now He was finding his home at the lower claiming levels here last season and comes back fresh in a spot that looks like it might flatter his tracking pace from this outside draw. Might be able to keep tabs on the next guy...
#6 Hustlin' Man He was an easy graduate in the local debut, and he's got a bit of dangerous pace in a race without much of it. Wouldn't be any surprise to see him win right back if he can shake off the top choice.
#2 Gabbys Bling His form is always all over the place, but the better starts on his page would put him in the hunt for at least a share. Maybe a few months away did him some good.
Race Summary Chief Now Now should get a great run from out here while racing fresh, and he was a consistent player at the lower levels last season -- any little bit of upside from there would put in the conversation while trying winners.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #1
#1 MAGNUS GOLD (3-1) Intriguing spot off the claim in Florida for 29-percent turf-to-dirt barn.
#7 PRO FEVER (2-1) Hit board in first three non-stakes tries, late foot in 5-1/2F return off fast works.
#2 SILENT TONE (7-2) Showed pulse in grass routes, gets Lasix for first start since January.
Race Summary MAGNUS GOLD ran second twice in one-mile turf races at Tampa Bay Downs for a $16,000 claiming price, in part because his dam, Belle’s Home (3-12, $115k) was an allowance-winning router on the Saratoga lawn. But his sharp new connections – owner Gumpster Stable and trainer Cipriano Contreras -- transported the 3-year-old 1,000 miles to the Horseshoe to run in a MSW dirt route against Indiana breds. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-7 exactas.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#2 SWIFT BEE (5-2) All-out but determined maiden sprint victory in seasonal debut, taken to repeat.
#1 MITOLE’S SECRET (6-1) Breezed in :47 flat for return, running lines dotted with next-out winners.
#6 HAPPY MATCH (4-1) Had excuse in lone try at this level, won MSW route over the track.
Race Summary SWIFT BEE looked like an easy winner as she loomed boldly outside the leaders on the turn, but she was all-out to defeat the stubborn pace setter at 5-1/2F after eight months away. She has a good long-distance test from last August to summon and can win again in her second start for a claiming tag. Bet to win and place and play 2-1 and 2-6 exactas.
      Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #6
#7 BHATIA (6-1) Rounding to maiden-breaking win but hasn’t run on conventional dirt since debut.
#4 AKKADIAN (10-1) Met eventual multiple graded stakes-placed Universe in Saratoga, enters new barn.
#8 HICKMAN CREEK (9-5) Chased solid pace, didn’t change leads at Keeneland, 1:00-1/5 work presumably with blinkers.
Race Summary BHATIA improved his speed figure in all five starts, the latest when finishing out of the money on turf. He “inched closer turning for home” but lack stretch kick in a split division race that timed 4/5 of a second faster. He finished third behind the two favorites in the race prior on Turfway Park’s synthetic track. Bet to win and place and play a 4-7-8 exacta box.

            Mountaineer Park - Race #2 - Post: 7:25pm - Allowance - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 79

            Rating:

            #8 UNCLE WILLIAM (ML=6/1)
#1 NOW THAT ICAN ROCK (ML=5/2)
            #4 NASTINATE (ML=10/1)

UNCLE WILLIAM - Owns the highest speed rating on the turf at this distance. Last race at Mountaineer Park on May 5th was a big class drop for this animal. Facing similar foes today. He should do well this time. This animal picks up a lot of cash per race. I believe he can add to the lifetime earnings today. This animal has the class to win the race. A tactical ride by Negron, and this one could bound home the winner. NOW THAT ICAN ROCK - Rode this racer on April 21st and Parker is right back in the irons in today's contest. This gelding likes to be near the lead. Today's affair is a shorter trip and should promote his likelihood of winning. Trainer Michael moves this thoroughbred to a lower class level to face a weaker class today. Look for a strong effort this time out. Have to make this gelding a win candidate; he comes off a nice race on Apr 21st. NASTINATE - This race horse is racing on the turf for the first time. He should be tough, coming off a first place finish in his race on Apr 19th on a sluggish track. Taking this jockey/handler combination is a smart choice. Classic handicapping angle - 3rd or 4th start after a vacation generally leads to a big effort. A live horse today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 FRYE ISLAND (IRE) (ML=2/1), #3 HOTLINE BLINK (ML=4/1), #5 SNEAKY SNEAKY (ML=8/1),

FRYE ISLAND (IRE) - This chalk horse may be out of condition without any recent morning activity. HOTLINE BLINK - Difficult to bet on any horse in a sprint race at 4/1 when he hasn't shown any on the board results in sprints in the last couple of months. Improbable for this racer to do much in today's event. The long layoff is a troublesome sign. SNEAKY SNEAKY - Finished third in his most recent effort with a somewhat easily forgotten fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #8 UNCLE WILLIAM on top if we're getting at least 4/1 odds

              # 6 MISCHIEVOUS CINDY 6/5
LADY STAR looks very good to best this field. Should be given consideration based on the solid speed fig posted in the last outing. Is difficult not to look at given the company run in lately. Is worth taking a close look at and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (69 average) at today's distance and surface lately. BACK STREET BABY - Should be considered here on the basis of the figs in the speed realm alone. Should be carefully examined in this race if only for the very strong speed figure recorded in the last race. MISCHIEVOUS CINDY - Her earnings per start in turf route races alone makes you take a look at her. With a formidable 64 average speed fig at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest.

                # 2 THIRD DEGREE 6/1
GAMBOLING GHOST is my choice. Has decent Equibase Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet for this event. Dacosta has him trained admirably to break promptly out of the starting gate. Should be considered a solid choice on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. Z BOSS - Shows reliable speed figures on average overall when measured up against the rest of this field. Can't overlook the connections here, a 29 winning percentage, one of the best at getting into the winner's circle. THIRD DEGREE - This gelding looks strong for this event since Cline has a very strong win percent with horses going this distance. With one of the best jockeys in terms of returns at the window, don't count this gelding out.

                  Parx Racing - Race #1 - Post: 12:40pm - Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 56

                  Rating:

                  #1 JUST CHEESY (ML=5/1)
                  #3 SUNNY MAGIC (ML=8/1)
                  #2 PURE REALIZATION (ML=6/1)
                  #4 SPHERIFICATION (ML=6/1)

JUST CHEESY - This rider/trainer duo has been producing a high winning percent, right around 33. The September 16th race at Parx Racing was at a class level of (68). Dropping down in class significantly, so he should be in a good position. SUNNY MAGIC - Hernandez and Solis perform well when they are put together. It's hard to beat a +60 return on investment for a rider and conditioner. The most dangerous animal in racing is the lone speed horse. If they let him get away early they probably won't catch him. The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of trainer Solis. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. This gelding is in good physical condition. Finished third on May 1st. PURE REALIZATION - I like the way this gelding's finish positions have gotten better with each start recently. A sign of a thoroughbred coming into top form. Look at this pattern of improvement. 39/44/58 are the last three speed ratings. This gelding's last speed rating registered on May 1st is number one in last race Equibase speed figures. SPHERIFICATION - The return on investment when Hazlewood and Rodriguez team up is fantastic. Gelding's finish positions keep getting better with each race. Maybe today's the day. Just missed hitting the board on May 1st at Parx Racing. With decent morning line odds in this field, he has my interest. This gelding gets a weight break of -7 lbs from last race. Its possible this could make the difference right here.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 CHARTAGE (ML=3/1), #6 MARCHIN INTO APRIL (ML=4/1), #8 WINNING SONG (ML=5/1),

CHARTAGE - He showed not much at all in the last affair. WINNING SONG - Tough for this closer animal to get up today. Without a hot pace to stir things up, the lone front speed is going to make it awfully hard to get the job done. The contest on May 4th was versus maiden claimers. Pass on this one this time around versus the tougher group. Finished first in his most recent performance with a somewhat easily forgotten speed rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this bunch.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 JUST CHEESY to win if we can get at least 9/2 odds
