Race of the Week: Game Face at Gulfstream on Saturday

    May 20, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

    The Lead:
Sophomore filly sprinters take center stage Saturday at Gulfstream Park for the $100,000 Game Face Stakes. The 6-furlong sprint goes as Race 10 of 11 and will be included in both the Sunset 6 and Coast-to-Coast Pick 5 wagers paired with sister track Santa Anita.

    Field Depth:
LENNILU is a stakes winner and Group 2-placed. WILLOW CASE also is a stakes winner, while DAKOTA'S LIL AUROR, LOVE LIKE LUCKY and LATE NIGHT TEXT are stakes-placed. LENNILU clearly has kept the strongest schedule in the field.

    Pace:
There's a heavy dose of dash speed, including MAXITAS, CANTON and LOVE LIKE LUCY. LENNILU and LATE NIGHT TEXT won't be far back in what should be a strong pace.

    Our Eyes:
    Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

1-MAXITAS: First of 4 Saffie Joseph Jr. trainees in the lineup, this Tampa debut dash winner has plenty of upside. By hot young sire Maxfield, his 5-1/2 furlong debut score was probably a bonus for his pedigree. But the task here from the rail vs. proven other speed is a tougher ask than her debut when even-money from a cush, post 6 of 6 at a shorter trip. Rare pairing for Joseph with Miguel Vazquez.

2-LENNILU: Strictly the filly to beat with a 4-for-4 local record and stakes experience on the biggest stages worldwide from Royal Ascot to the Breeders' Cup. Arguably a touch better on turf than dirt, even if 2-for-2 on the main track, and perhaps 6 furlongs stretches her brilliance beyond her exceptional dash form (but she's won at the trip in her only attempt). Not easy taking a short price on a 3% jockey, but Patrick Biancone gives the call back to Jonathan Ocasio (who was 2-for-2 aboard her last year).

3-WILLOW CASE: October layoff returnee won the Sharp Susan Stakes last summer on a sloppy track. Tough comeback spot for route-bred runner who was built up to distance last year, looking more like a launching pad to her season than the destination. Jockey Diego Herrrera has made a strong transition to Gulfstream.

4-DAKOTA'S LIL AUROR: Most experienced field member has made 13 starts, all local, but has lost 11 straight while completing exotics in 5 in a row. Herbert Miller trainee's consistency is admirable but also indicating there's not a move forward in her to topple the best runners here.

5-CANTON: Fast...but can she last? Daughter of Liam's Map looks to continue a big Saturday run for the sire of Preakness winner Napoleon Solo. She's made the lead in each of her last 3 starts on dirt, but held to score only in the maiden heat - tiring late to third in the pair of allowance bids. Saffie Joseph Jr. wheels her back on 13 days' rest for the shortest interval of her career. Can soften the other speed, but prefer others late.

6-LOVE LIKE LUCY: After 5 straight starts in blinkers, trainer Saffie Joseph Jr. removes the hood trying to snap this filly's 6-race losing skid. Nik Juarez takes the mount for the first time, the fifth different jockey to ride her in succession. Her best effort of late came on an off track and with Lasix, which she won't be able to use in Saturday's stakes.

7-LATE NIGHT TEXT: The cut-back in distance and outside post draw should really give the fourth and final Saffie Joseph Jr. entrant some tactical edges in a race with plenty of pace. Joseph's spring/summer go-to pilot Micah Husbands lands here and this Into Mischief filly was vastly improved last out on the barn change from Nolan Ramsey. She was able to run away from a pair of Brad Cox trainees in what's likely a tougher late April maiden special weight than most at Gulfstream.

    Most Likely Exotics Contender:
LATE NIGHT TEXT should get a dynamite stalking trip and have every chance as my top choice to upend LENNILU.

    Best Longshot Contender:
DAKOTA'S LIL AUROR hangs around the superfecta often at big prices and could bottom the ticket if enough speed backs up in this race.

    Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
    $100 win LATE NIGHT TEXT.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Early Pick 4 Analysis

        May 23, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands has a 15-race card with the 0.50 Early Pick 4 starting in Race 6. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 6 (8:40 PM EDT)

2-Sonofanutckracker (5/2)-Comes off a sharp mile on an off track leading from start to finish. This is the 2nd start on Lasix, and the 3-year-old has won 4 of 7 at M1. Tim Tetrick is at the controls, and this is a logical use.
3-Rocknacious (8-1)-Here is an interesting play that will probably be bet down in its 3rd start on Lasix. In the last 3 races, two were on a sloppy track and sandwiched in between is a 10-hole starting slot. Has only 1 win in 12 starts, but Jason Bartlett will have in play early on.
5-Bookie J (2-1)-The Chris Ryder trainee has the best resume (14-6-2-3) and will be driven today by usual driver Dexter Dun. Should be a player at a small price.

        Race 7 (9:05 PM EDT)

3-Practical Man (5-1)-Jordan Stratton steers for trainer Tom Fanning and this colt knows how to cash checks (12-3-3-3). Comes off a solid win off an efficient trip with today's pilot between the pipes. Will look for a similar game plan, at a square price.
5-Gabes Luck (7/2)-Stayed inside in the 1st race since 8-27 and came 2nd despite a 26.4 last panel. Nancy Takter trainee lost to a tough customer last time and it isn't in this field. Lightly raced colt could be ready for the wrapper to come off.

        Race 8 (9:30 PM EDT)

1-Whoa Black Betty (2-1)-This is a big track horse who does good work at M1 (5-3-1-0). The entire field has only 5 wins at the Big M and the Ron Burke trainee comes off a nice score in its 2nd start for the new barn. Likes to be sitting on the point or close to it and Yannick Gingras shouldn't have an issue working that trip. Will be a small price and could have its way with this crew.

        Race 9 (9:55 PM EDT)

6-David Seaman S (3-1)-The Ake Svanstedt pupil seems to have trouble passing foes but will cut some slack because it has been facing some tough customers. Could take advantage of a beatable field and will look for an aggressive steer.
7-King Of The Wind (4-1)-On 5-15 they went to the half in 54.1 and Joe B couldn't get the top. Will look for a kinder trip and will use on the assumption the Walner 3-year-old could be overlooked.
8-Never Say Die (7/2)-Did get bet in last and got the top but couldn't seal the deal missing by less than a length. Did win 4 of 8 last season and should be ready to bring a big try in the 3rd race off the bench. Will need a smooth trip because there are others who will be leaving. But will rely on Dunn to work out the details.

        $1 Early Pick 4

        2,3,5/3,5/1/6,7,8
        Total Bet=$18

Jeremy Plonk: Saturday’s California Gold Rush Day at SA

          May 22, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

Five stakes races are featured Saturday for the California Gold Rush Day at Santa Anita, starring top state-breds across several racing divisions. Horseplayers at Xpressbet and 1/ST BET also can take part in a $2,000 Late Pick 4 Hit & Split Promotion on the final 4 races each day through Memorial Day Monday. Saturday’s late pick 4 includes the Melair Stakes and the Snow Chief Stakes.

          Let’s get to work.

          Race 3: $100,000 Thor’s Echo Stakes
Four last-out winners are among the 7 sprinters, while 2 others were recent runners-up in photo-finish defeats. Current form abounds, but the lightly raced 7-year-old #5 Big City Lights (6-5 ML odds) still manages to stand out. He’s 6 of 8 locally, including an open-company allowance May 2 in his first start of the year. Trainer Richard Mandella’s runners have won 3 of 6 starts locally since the start of May heading into this important racing weekend and are trending the right direction. Since The Chosen Vron’s retirement, his former rival has assumed the baton as best sprinter among the Cal-breds. He’ll be a single for me in early multi-race bets. As for exactas, consider #3 Uncle Chilly (10-1 ML odds) a late-moving threat in a race with plenty of tempo as he steps up in class after 3 straight wins since coming to the barn of Jeff Mullins.

          Race 4: $100,000 Fran’s Valentine Stakes
Filly and mare turf milers try to come up with an answer for #3 Grand Slam Smile (1-1 ML odds), who is a head shy of winning her last 5 starts in the Cal-bred ranks. The Sean McCarthy gets right into the race and throws down the challenge, and a 20: 11-6-3 career mark indicates just how salty she can be. While turf hasn’t been her calling card, #8 Om N Joy (5-1 ML odds) should be considered the late threat. She rattled off 5 straight wins last year, including the Melair on this Gold Rush Day card, and has been taking on graded stakes company since last summer. Sire Om was a spectacular turf miler, so perhaps she’s ready to take to the grass better than she did early in her career when finishing third or fourth in 3 local grass bids. Hard to see this race getting beyond that pair. At 5-1 or more, taking a shot on Om N Joy would have appeal.

Race 6: $100,000 Crystal Water Stakes
The Cal-bred turf mile scene for the colts and geldings attracted 9 entrants, including #7 Flyover (1-1 ML odds), an all-or-nothing pace player with a 10: 5-0-0 lifetime mark, mostly in turf sprints. He’s obviously the horse to catch, but his ledger and this 2-turn trip give you reason to entertain shopping. Anyone short on stamina or distance will pay the price against his speed, so think late-runners if wanting to pull the upset. #1 Santa Barbarian rallied to win the 9-furlong Snow Chief on this card last year and should have benefitted from a well-placed allowance return April 26 after 10 months away. The blinkers removed from #3 Cali Cat (6-1 ML) could help awaken Santa Barbarian’s 2025 Snow Chief closest pursuer and I expect him to be heard from late. Give me the well-drawn 1-3 duo intra-race and multi-race in the Crystal Water.

          Race 7: $125,00 Melair Stakes
Sprint-bred #4 Mohaven (3-5 ML odds) obviously is the most accomplished in this lineup with wins in the Golden State Juvenile Fillies and Evening Jewel Stakes. But the John Sadler trainee is questionable around 2 turns based on pedigree and lack of experience, and she has yet to score consecutive victories despite 3 wins in 6 starts. Respect, but don’t concede this race to her. The 2-turn record for #5 Cecilia Street (12-1 ML odds) impresses at 5: 1-2-2 with dirt sprint races really soiling her form. I like the rider change to Antonio Fresu here. Given the struggles of the Leonard Powell barn, demand a fair price, but I’d like her at 6-1 or more. And prices? How about #6 Lino’s Angel (30-1 ML odds). She’s bred to run long but has just been an even-steven sprinter in all 12 starts. She could really appreciate the stretchout and notice a very fast uptick in her workouts since that last start. Why not at that number?

Race 8: $125,000 Snow Chief Stakes
It’s a long way from turf sprints to 1-1/8 miles for favorite #3 He’s a Knockout (6-5 ML odds). He’s been brilliant in 2 wire-to-wire scores, but he’s never run 2 races in a form cycle and we don’t know he’ll respond to that comeback sprint win April 19. Won’t take a short price, but tip the cap if he beats me. #7 Third Beer (6-1 ML odds) has been facing tougher and is 2-for-2 when dropped into the state-bred ranks. This colt is bred for the distance and has been solid-enough late in turf miles to think the additional furlong is within his grasp. Moved too soon last time under Florent Geroux and could get a more patient ride from Kazushi Kimura. #1 Unrivaled Time adds blinkers, saves ground from the rail and drops in class after facing tougher in each of his last 3. Could be a wakeup day for the Leonard Powell barn as he has a couple of live chances.

If you’re looking at playing the Late Pick 4 Hit & Split promotion, I like the post, turf-to-dirt move, stretch-out and hot George Papaprodomou barn with #2 Known Idea (7-2 ML odds) in Race 9. And deuces wild for me in the Race 10 finale as #2 Tight Daily (20-1 ML odds) gets a real longshot look for a Peter Eurton barn having a strong run in May at Santa Anita. This is the classic Jeff Siegel “2 sprints and then a route” form cycle that could be ready for a breakout maiden score.

            #6
            Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Santa Anita Park - Race #2
#4 Lihue Princess She only went evenly in the debut here last month, but she probably has a little bit of upside for a team that has done sharp work with these types of short-sprint juveniles. Ready for better?
#6 Free Closer She's working like she might be OK, making her one of the more interesting new faces here. Check her out on the tote and track, but I'm guessing she's going to fire here.
#7 Thirsty Caitlin She chased throughout and stayed on well in the debut run, and even a small step forward off that one would probably make her tough here. Like that she's got that bullet work since the debut try.
Race Summary Lihue Princess didn't show a ton in the debut try, but she's got some reasonable upside today while racing out of a barn that has been tough in these kinds of local spots the last couple years.
Santa Anita Park - Race #5
#6 Stage Run Think there are a few more likely winners in here, but he at least has some mild route form to call on from the two-back try, and he should get a good trip near the top while stretching back out.
#5 Trojan Mafia He has been pretty one-paced in both starts so far, but they came against better company than he's going to meet today, so it wouldn't be a shock to see him wake up in a hurry with this kind of company.
#8 My Man Joe Roldan Stretchout player might find an OK spying spot from the outside, and he's another getting into the easiest spot he has seen so far after a couple of flat efforts.
Race Summary Stage Run has some midrange price appeal thanks to the two-back run, and he should find a really nice kind of first-jump trip while racing near the front throughout.
Santa Anita Park - Race #10
#12 Hungover He ran OK when getting two turns for the first time last out, and something like that would probably keep him in the frame with this crew if he were able to translate that over to the turf. Not sure we are getting the 20/1 ML price, but the offering on the tote should still be appealing enough.
#9 Gaines Wouldn't be a shock to see him air this group after a really solid debut showing going short, and that kind of stretchout pace might hit hard in a spot without a ton of confirmed early burn.
#11 Flash of Lightning Reliable finisher keeps showing up, but he's again going to give the jump to a few players who have better tactical pace, and that might leave him rallying along for a share again. One of the ones.
Race Summary Hungover looked pretty good with stretching out here last month, and there's enough turf in the pedigree to think he might be able to produce something comparable while moving over to the grass for the first time.

              #7
              Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

              Gulfstream Park - Race #8
#2 SALVATTORE PRINCE (5-2) Followed 3-wide move of odds-on winner and just missed winning.
#1 ACCELERATE ME (9-2) Rallied for a 6/3-2-1 route record since joining this barn, mostly at one mile.
#8 BORDER WAR (8-5) Escaped ‘box’ too late, earned top speed fig, but winner finished last on Friday card.
Race Summary It’s anybody’s race in this $12,500 starter allowance going a route of ground. Give the nod to SALVATTORE PRINCE, who runs well with Bravo aboard, was slowed by the pace in three of his last four starts and is a six-figure earner with four wins on the synthetic track. Bet to win and place and play 2-1 and 2-8 exactas.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#6 I WALK THE NIGHT (5-2) Rallied for third in a pair of long sprints, can ill afford another bumpy start.
#7 VEKOMA VELOCITY (9-5) Out-kicked by next-out repeater in same spot two starts back.
#5 DOMINICAN PIRATE (6-1) Finished third at three distances in his last four starts.
Race Summary I WALK THE NIGHT rallied for a pair of thirds in his only two long sprint attempts and should be well-suited to one mile if he avoids recurring problems at the start. He earned his top speed figure at this level when racing with Lasix and blinkers for the first time. Bet to win and place and play 6-5 and 6-7 exactas.
              Gulfstream Park - Race #2
#1 SLEWTY PRINCESS (2-1) Plays to a steady, winning beat at this distance, gets in light-weighted.
#7 STELLA BIONDA (8-5) Returns to winning level, doesn’t shy from photo-finish camera, lures Reyes.
#8 SOMERSET MIA (8-1) Broke sharp, saved ground, finished well for second, projects ideal stalking trip.
Race Summary SLEWTY PRINCESS has two wins at this distance on the synthetic track, but she finished behind morning-line favorite STELLA BIONDA twice. She draws the rail, sheds 4 pounds and gets the nod to turn the tables at a slightly better morning-line price. Bet to win and place and play 1-7 and 1-8 exactas.

KNOWN IDEA looks respectable to best this field. With a sound 99 average Equibase Speed Figure at the distance, seems well suited for today's contest. His 94 average has this gelding with among the top Equibase Speed Figs in here. Papaprodromou has a strong win percent with horses racing in dirt route races. SPIRITUAL ADVISOR - The average Equibase class rating alone makes this one a solid choice. He has been racing soundly recently while recording strong Speed Figures.

Century Mile - Race #4 - Post: 6:15pm - Maiden Optional Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 62

                      #3 GIGI'S ADDICTION (ML=5/2)
                      #1 SCARLETT LETTER (ML=10/1)

GIGI'S ADDICTION - Santo was aboard this filly last time around the track and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. Generally, I don't like to see a filly run against the males like she did May 9th. Good to see she's back with her own sex today. This filly recorded a nice speed rating of 64 in her last race. That speed rating should be good enough to score this time. Condilenios drops her down to this class level. You don't need too much more information to think this animal has a darn good chance at this level. SCARLETT LETTER - I surely see favorable signs for this racer right here.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #8 TOURISTICA (ML=3/1), #5 STAY RISQUE (ML=7/2), #2 RED CHARITY (ML=6/1),

TOURISTICA - Today's event is 6 furlongs. Hasn't hit the board in a short distance affair in the last two months. Not the greatest of signs. The fifth place result in the last event was not that great. STAY RISQUE - A come from behinder like this one needs a speed battle to set things up and she isn't likely to get one this time. Can't wager on this racer in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even hit the board in a sprint race of late. Common speed fig last time out at Century Mile at 5 furlongs. Don't think this racer will improve too much in today's event. RED CHARITY - Doesn't appear to have enough good aspects to justify the value.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - GIGI'S ADDICTION - Reviewing the PP lines, this horse last raced on May 9th at Century Mile. Wasn't good enough for the win, but a solid 2nd place finish. Was well clear of the rest of the field. Should improve in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 GIGI'S ADDICTION to win if we can get at least 7/5 odds

I've got to go with WHAT'S CRACKIN. Will probably be one of the leaders of the group going into the halfway point of the competition. Have to consider solely on class, with some of the strongest class figures of this field. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong Equibase Speed Figures (65 average) at today's distance and surface lately. BETHY - Ought to come out very solid - I have liked the way this mare has moved swiftly to the front end recently. Must be given consideration based on the strong Equibase Speed Figure earned in the last race. AWESOME SUNDAY - She has garnered very good figs under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well versus this field. This pony has a wonderful win percent in dirt sprints.

                          Rating:

                          #1 MEMOLOTSAMISCHIEF (ML=8/1)
                          #4 SIZE LORD (ML=9/2)

MEMOLOTSAMISCHIEF - This gelding seems to run pretty good after a layoff. Trainer Barrio moves this thoroughbred to a lower class rank to face a lower class field. Look for a good performance given the class advantage. SIZE LORD - Faced tougher last out at Sweetwater Downs. Based on class figures, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this horse on my list of probable winners in this race. This front running sort should benefit from this contest's shorter trip. This gelding has been trying different distances, but from the looks of things, he ran a nice speed figure last try at this distance. This gelding has been training well, and the recent bullet work says he's primed for a big performance today. This one likes to win on different ovals. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call.

                          Vulnerable Contenders: #2 MY GOLDEN M (ML=6/5), #3 BOURBON AND WATER (ML=9/5), #6 PADDY'S HOUSE (ML=8/1),

MY GOLDEN M - Hasn't raced or had any drills since Apr 10th. Not much value on this morning-line favorite. BOURBON AND WATER - 9/5 is not offering enough value for any thoroughbred in a sprint of 5 furlongs that hasn't finished in the money in a sprint event recently. PADDY'S HOUSE - This gelding notched a speed rating in his last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - MEMOLOTSAMISCHIEF - I love betting on horses that have a big advantage over the rest of the field when it comes to the TrackMaster Power Rating. This one fits the bill.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #1 MEMOLOTSAMISCHIEF is the play if we get odds of 3/2 or better
