GOLD HEART MAFIA - The speed figure of 58 from her most recent contest looks solid in here. MANSA MUSAA - The average Equibase class rating alone makes this one a contender. This pony has some longshot angles going for him.

BATTLE CALL - This thoroughbred has recorded the best recent turf Equibase speed figure at the distance-surface. Ho and Gallegos perform well when they partner up. It's hard to beat a +24 return on investment for a rider and conditioner. This gelding seems to run pretty good after a layoff. CREATE TROUBLE - I figure Dutrow is making a good move here. This gelding can only benefit from the shorter distance. Looking at today's class figure, this thoroughbred is meeting an easier bunch than in the last race at Laurel. Average class figure is tops in this group. I think that is a big advantage for a race on the turf. He has the highest earnings per start. Check out this animal. Look for this gelding to run lots better today. Last affair at Laurel finishing fourth on a track listed as good is no indication of his true ability.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 WICKED FINN (ML=9/2), #7 ARJAY (ML=6/1),

WICKED FINN - The finish position of seventh in the last race shows me that this equine may be going off form. I find it hard to bet on this less than sharp equine this time. Make him show you something in a short distance race before you wager on him in a race of 7 1/2 furlongs. ARJAY - This gelding hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of efforts. No picnic to wager on any steed in a sprint contest if he hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last 60 days.

CANNON - McKee is right back for another affair today after getting on board this horse for the 1st time on May 16th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. Took a big class drop last out, and I think he may have needed it. Cline enters him at a similar class level today. I'd expect an improved performance. This gelding is in fine form, having run a good race on May 16th, finishing third. MESS HALL - Machado was aboard this gelding in the last race and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. He must like the track here. Shipped in to win on May 10th and he looks tough once again. A thoroughbred coming back this quickly after a good outing is a good sign. CAMDEN HILLS - Trainer, Cahill, has been deliberate with this colt off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Don't often see a lucrative ROI like +200. This rider/trainer duo has done well together over the last twelve months. This colt is in good condition. Finished second on May 16th. This horse has increased his speed ratings from a fig of 51 to 70 to 72 in a row.

HALFWAY JOKING - This probable favorite hasn't been to the track in awhile. No drills since last race. A CAB ON THE ROCKS - Doesn't seem inspiring to me after the lack of any type of closing ability on May 17th. Usually I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in short distance events in order to bet on him.

Has been racing soundly and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. EMIRATES AFFAIR - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this pony look very good in this competition. Has been racing in the most competitive company of the field as of late.

Scott Shapiro: Belmont Racing Festival Wednesday Picks/Analysis

The start of a fantastic week of thoroughbred racing in Saratoga Springs, New York is nearly upon us. The Belmont Stakes Racing Festival kicks off in earnest on Wednesday afternoon for the first of 5 cards headlined by Saturday’s third jewel of the Triple Crown. Wednesday is for the New York-breds and the slate came up as good as one could hope. Here are a few horses I like most to get things started at one of my favorite places on the planet.


Race 4: Kingston
This 1 1/16-mile event over the Inner Turf is likely to be bet like a three-horse race between #2 George Briggs, #6 Mi Bago, and #7 Spirit of St Louis. Mi Bago and Spirit of St Louis have the substantial class edge, but I still prefer George Briggs. The son of Fog of War was moved into the Miguel Clement barn before his last start against allowance foes at Aqueduct on June 3. He passed the test with flying colors at odds-on pulling away late to win very easily at this same distance. He has to prove himself against better competition, but should be set for his best with Flavien Prat back to ride. A win bet at 2-1 or higher for me and a single in horizontals.

Play: #2 George Briggs (2-1 ML)


Race 5: Critical Eye
I definitely will hope to be live with a Daily Double out of the Kingston into this 9-furlong affair over the main track to #1 Walk With Me. The Central Banker mare ran three times at one-turn this winter/spring at Aqueduct, including a win against open company allowance foes at 12-1 in February. With the two favorites #3 Landed and #7 Bernietakescharge potentially compromising each other’s chances on the front end, it is quite possible the David Duggan trainee will be in the perfect spot to take advantage. The fact she has a win at the distance and gets a major rider upgrade to Flavien Prat gives me reason to believe that with the right voyage she can out finish this group late. Duggan does not start a ton of horses, but thus far in 2026 he has won with 7 of 36. 18 have finished in the money. Hopefully, she stays at her ML price or floats slightly higher.

Play: #1 Walk With Me (7-2 ML)


Race 8: Mike Lee
My final spot play on the Wednesday agenda comes in a strong edition of this 7-furlong event over the main track. There are some talented runners in here, but I am going to try to beat the logicals with #2 B Thedonald. The pace should be contentious, which should bode well for those who can settle early and finish with energy. This lightly-raced son of Girvin certainly fits the bill. He comes in to his first stakes try off a pair of narrow wins in similar voyages as he encounters in his first trip to upstate New York. Trainer Horacio De Paz comes in smoking hot, winning with 8 of 27 over the last 30 days for a $3.05 ROI. The $60k EAS May ’25 purchase should be finishing well off a favorable voyage if he is up to the class test.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2

#5 Hightail Fox	He has had plenty of chances, so I don't trust him a whole lot, but I think this race could be ready for someone to run from a bit off the pace, and he at least has a little bit of honest finishing form.
#3 So Grand	He can be dangerous here if he's able to shake loose at any point, as he's not meeting a ton of other serious sprint speed, so he could be in the right kind of spot turning for home.
#4 Leo Q	He is typically pretty one-paced late in his races, but that might be enough to stick around for a share of this one. Wouldn't be a surprise on top, he's just not for me.
Race Summary	Hightail Fox might get an OK run here -- there aren't a ton of serious speed types lined up, but he's the only reliable finisher in here, and he might be just tactical enough to stay in touch if the pace is soft.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #4

#6 Warrior's Mission	Tactical speed goes second off the break, and he should get a really nice trip from the outside here while tracking the splits. Edge.
#3 Mr. Impairment	He's back fresh while cutting back around one turn for the comeback run, and there are a couple races on his page here last season that fit well enough. I'm not sold, but he feels like one of the ones.
#2 Fly in the Mystic	He has some upside in the second start back off the layoff, but I worry he'll be along a bit too late like he was in the last couple starts. Threat.
Race Summary	Warrior's Mission might get the run of the race from a perfect kind of tracking spot, and any move forward off the comeback run might keep him in the picture.

Presque Isle Downs - Race #8

#7 Chubs Rocket	He's versatile enough to track the pace or settle and finish, and I think he might be able to sit back off the speed and get the last laugh in this one while meeting a couple of confirmed pace players.
#1 This Laughs On You	He scored off the bench here last season, so there's a chance he'll fire another good one while racing off the layoff today, and I think they found the right kind of price with him in those last couple races last year. In the mix.
#5 Wings of God	There are a couple of races on his page that feel interesting if he's able to bring something similar over the local footing, and the cutback should definitely work in his favor.
Race Summary	Fun race, but I think Chubs Rocket will win it at a mild kind of price -- he should get a great race shape and has been in with some better groups in the races on his page.

He returns as a gelding and his recent workouts are encouraging. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-5 exacta box.

#3 MANSFIELD TIGER (5-1)	Consistent, $300k money earner just missed off layoff last Spring.
#2 MONUMENTALJUSTICE (2-1)	Second in last two fast-track routes at distance, but winless since 2024.
