Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Park Spot Plays

    June 10, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

The winter-spring racing season at Santa Anita Park started back in late December of 2025. A lot has happened in the world of thoroughbred racing since then, but things begin to come to an end starting on Thursday afternoon when the Great Race Place offers up the first of four cards to kick off closing week. Race 1 goes to post at 4PM eastern/1PM local time and includes a pair of $100,000 stakes. Here are the horses I plan to build my day around over the 9-race slate.

    Race 5:
My first play comes in this MSW event for fillies and mares at one-mile over the grass where it appears relatively wide-open. 5-2-ML favorite #8 Cortina d’Amprezzo has had five chances already, including three in the States at 7-2 or lower and has failed to do better than third, while #7 Fire Ban is 0 for 10 despite 4 seconds. I do not trust them or the others that have competed in North America thus far, so I will turn to Irish-bred #5 Astronomically. The daughter of No Nay Never makes her first start since shipping overseas into the Paddy Gallagher barn. Gallagher is just 3 for 31 to start 2026, but the veteran trainer has meant business when he legs up jockey Juan Hernandez. This is evidenced by his 5 for 10-record over the last two years for a $9.52 ROI. Astronomically has to prove herself outside of Europe and on the move from synthetic-to-turf, but I like her chances to do just that against these.

    Play: #5 Astronomically (4-1 ML)

    Picks 5-1-7

    Race 8: Affirmed
One of the two stakes on the special Thursday afternoon slate is this 1 1/16-mile event for 3YOs over the main track where it is likely to be wagered on like a two-horse race. #4 Decisive Win holds the pace advantage and a fast last race over this surface to break his maiden for complete fun, but #3 Secured Freedom holds the class edge. The Practical Joke colt was on the Triple Crown Trail in Southern California for trainer Tim Yakteen before opting to try the cutback in the Pat Day Mile (G2) on the Kentucky Derby undercard. Secured Freedom broke well that day and ran fine finishing fourth beaten seven lengths, but just happened to run into arguably the two best 3YO’s in the country. Crude Velocity won that day, but runner-up Englishman returned the favor last weekend with a massive win in the Woody Stephens (G1) at Saratoga. Yakteen takes the blinkers off Secured Freedom for the first time on Thursday, stretches him back out to a route of ground, and legs up Joel Rosario. He is a quality horse that has tackled better than he encounters here. I am expecting this colt’s to visit the winner’s circle for the first time since his maiden score.

Play: #3 Secured Freedom (8-5 ML)

    Picks 3-4-1

    Race 9:
My final play of the day comes in this state-bred first-level allowance over the Hillside Turf Course where there is a serious lack of early speed signed on. #1 Maker and Sons is the likely pacesetter, but breaks from the rail and has done all of his best running thus far on dirt. Therefore, I want a horse that can sit just off the pace, take control at the top of the lane, and take advantage of the probable race shape. I will hope it is #9 Sogno Di Vino. The son of Vino Rosso makes his first start since late September ’25 for Peter Miller. The 4YO gelding has done most of his running at two-turns and has had a number of chances over the grass, but never over this unique configuration. With the likelihood he is a bit keen off the layoff, I expect him to be sitting second or third early under Juan Hernandez. If he finds that spot, he should be in a perfect position to take advantage of favorites that could be up against it given race dynamics. The price should be right to take a swing in the finale.

Play: #9 Sogno Di Vino (12-1 ML)

    Picks 9-10-8

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#7 Veri Collected She is short on excuses at this point, but she has some running lines on her page that suggest she'll like the local footing, and she's one of the few with some honest finishing efforts despite having shown the pace last out. Along late to land it?
#6 Shaunnasaprilfool She was a good fit with similar last time out and should be in line for a good run of things while sitting up close throughout. Seems like one of the more likely forward players to stick around.
#1 Blondieness Nothing to write home about in her form, but she has run well enough a couple times to think she might be able to land a piece of this on the cutback in what feels like a soft spot for the level.
Race Summary #3 Lightning Lane showed pace and stayed well with similar last time out and is a threat with this group, too. Veri Collected might offer an OK price with this group while making her first local start.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #4
#2 Spirited Sol He may not be the most likely winner in here, but he was pretty reliable last season while almost always offering overlay prices. Think he'll be a nice number on the board again here, and he missed by less than a length off the bench last year. Could land it fresh.
#3 Shadow Factor He's one of a few with a chance to land this, as he has reliable form and a baseline that makes him an obvious threat. Should be right up on the pace.
#5 Diamond Dust He's another racing off the layoff today, but he has been in a couple of pretty tough spots along the way in his local starts, so it wouldn't be a shock to see him chase early and stay on to score. In the mix.
Race Summary Spirited Sol outran his price just about every time last year, and he has good positional pace that tends to lead him to pretty decent tracking trips. Wouldn't be a surprise to see him get right back to it off the layoff.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#2 Hard Mission He's capable of something better than he showed off the claim last time out, and he might get a decent race shape in a spot with a couple potential pace players to show the way early.
#4 Quistmer He's got speed, but he might have just enough of an ability to tap on the brakes to give him a chance to sit close early and stick around late. Could get first jump.
#8 Hold Your Applause He has a lot of the same appeal as the top choice, but I assume the price is going to be shorter here than it is up there. He's got good finishing form, but I worry about the fact that he hit the top in both of his last two and failed to stay to the wire.
Race Summary Hard Mission should get an OK race flow with this group while looking to bounce back off a flat run last time out. He rarely stays in flat form for long, so I'm expecting better at a decent price.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Delaware Park - Race #1
#1 UPTOWN ART (5-1) Should again be in up-close, winning range from the rail, value remains.
#2 FURYS CHARM (7-5) Ran 1-2 in Gulfstream routes, shortens up for first try on conventional dirt.
#4 FLEE (5-2) Buried 0-for-16 runner-up and others at this level in second start for Ness.
Race Summary UPTOWN ART saved ground, took aim on the lead in upper stretch and held gamely for second after the class-dropping favorite passed by. A similar trip could be in store today at her winning distance and she offers the best value among the favorites. Bet to win and place and play 1-2, 1-4 and 2-1 exactas.
        Delaware Park - Race #3
#6 BAHAMIAN MOON (6-1) Value play in deep field of turf sprinters, race two back was strong.
#5 GIFT OF GAB (4-1) Won off six-month layoff at Laurel against similar to top $250k on turf.
#1 BABY BLOCKS (2-1) Ran 1-2 on Delaware lawn last year, returns from GP off another photo-finish win.
Race Summary Proven turf form abounds in this 5F starter allowance as the eight entrants are a combined 34-for-118 with six $100k-plus earners. BAHAMIAN MOON seeks a duplicate of his first grass try for this barn two starts ago, when he attended to a fast pace, then ‘took charge’ turning for home and got caught by hard-hitting winner Power Attack (8-27, $294k) and runner-up Hector, who came back to win. Bet to win and place and play 6-1 and 6-5 exactas.
        Delaware Park - Race #6
#3 STRIKING SPARKS (5-2) Stands 6/2-1-2 in routes since late February, holds tactical advantage.
#7 BROADCASTER (10-1) Ran best race at this distance, out-kicked by Prot?g? (5-24, $254k) at 6F two back.
#5 TAKE THE PLEDGE (7-2) Rallies from clouds, looks good on paper, lack of pace in here the concern.
Race Summary STRIKING SPARKS has hit his best stride after a winless 2025 season, winning twice and finishing in the money three other times at various Mid-Atlantic venues. His close-up ability makes him extra dangerous in this field, so make a win and place wager on today’s Best Bet and play a 3/5, 7/ALL trifecta.

              # 5 LAST MINUTE MIKEY 7/2
I think MAGIC MOTOWN is a very good choice. Morales has this colt racing well and is a respectable pick based on the very good Equibase Speed Figures recorded in sprint races lately. With Chavez getting the mount, watch out for this equine. Must be carefully examined here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. GLORY REIGNS - This animal has some longshot handicapping angles going for him. Have to take notice when any equine makes a quick major improvement. LAST MINUTE MIKEY - I can't pass on this gelding given one of the best rider and conditioner combos on the grounds. When this rider and handler team up, gamblers often make money.

                Presque Isle Downs - Race #3 - Post: 4:24pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 79

                Rating:

                #1 EQUINAMOUS (ML=9/2)
                #4 NAUGHTY FAVORS (ML=3/1)
                #6 NELIDA (ML=4/1)
                #2 UPPITY UP (ML=5/1)

EQUINAMOUS - That 75 fig this mare recorded in her last affair tells me she's a major player this time out. The rest of the group may trail this animal all the way around the track. Horse has improved at least two Equibase speed figure points in last 2 races. I look for that positive trend to continue today. NAUGHTY FAVORS - I definitely see favorable signs for this steed right here. NELIDA - My handicapping 'sense' tells me to be ready for this horse in this event UPPITY UP - When Kintz gives Gallardo a leg up on any mount, you know full well that with their win percentage you have much more than a fighting chance. Multiple wins over the surface right here at Presque Isle Downs. Maybe, another trip to the winner's circle in this field. This horse earns a lot of money per race around the track. I believe she can add to the lifetime total right here.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 PASAJERA (ML=7/2), #5 SARATOGA EMPRESS (GB) (ML=8/1),

PASAJERA - Tough to invest in at 7/2 odds after the last two efforts. This racer likes to be there at the wire, but doesn't usually finish first. Keep out of the top spot. SARATOGA EMPRESS (GB) - Where is the pace? None to be found in here to set things up for this entrant.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #1 EQUINAMOUS on top if we're getting at least 9/2 odds

SWEET HONEY BEE is my choice. Is worth a close look and may be a wager - strong speed figures (56 average) at today's distance and surface recently. Has very good Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet for this race. Must be given a chance given the class of races run lately. UPTOWN ART - This filly is a solid contender based on her earnings per start in dirt sprint races. SWEET SUMMER LOVE - This mare with Vargas in the saddle makes her a contender. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong Equibase speed figs (51 average) at today's distance and surface lately.

                    Parx Racing - Race #2 - Post: 1:07pm - Maiden Special - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $40,000 Class Rating: 72

                    Rating:

                    #3 GUS' TEN (ML=8/1)
                    #6 RAGATONY (ML=9/5)
                    #2 NIKKI'S CHARM (ML=5/2)

GUS' TEN - This racer ran outside the top 3 at Parx Racing last out in the slop. He should improve in this race on a fast track. RAGATONY - That 64 fig this colt recorded in his last race tells me he's a key player today. This colt is tops in (EPS) earnings per start. Take a long look at this thoroughbred in the saddling enclosure. NIKKI'S CHARM - This jockey and trainer have a terrific winning pct when they join forces. First-timer has been working over this very track. I think that's a big plus in his favor. A strong handicapping angle is first-time Lasix. Pino gives it to this one for this event.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #4 TEDISON (ML=4/1), #1 ONCEINAWHILE (ML=8/1),

TEDISON - 4/1 is too low of a price to take on this one. ONCEINAWHILE - Didn't look so hot last time out of the box. Probably won't make an impact in today's event.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #3 GUS' TEN on the nose if you can get odds of 7/2 or more
