Scott Shapiro: Santa Anita Spot Plays

    June 12, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

After an early start to the final week of the winter-spring season at Santa Anita Park yesterday, they are back at it in Arcadia with a 9-race card that kicks off at 4PM eastern/1PM local time. The card is headlined by the $100,000 Possibly Perfect Stakes at 1 1/4-miles over the Hillside Turf Course and makes up the second leg of Friday’s All-Turf Pick 3. Here are a few horses I plan to build my day around.

    Race 1:
The top two choices on the morning line are likely to be tough in this 5-furlong turf event for state-bred MSW foes. 6-5-favorite #4 Zip Me Up bested #6 Sacred Sound last month in a race where the speeds did not hang around late. I like Sacred Sound though to turn the tables in the rematch. The Altamira Racing Stable filly was returning off a 9-month break for Peter Miller last out and ran like it. She broke just okay and then struggled to relax leaving her with little left when the real running started, but I expect better in the opener. Her early speed, the cutback to 5-panels, and the move to Juan Hernandez all spell trouble for this field of non-winners assuming she can get out of the gate in good order.

Play: #6 Sacred Sound (2-1 ML)
    Picks: 6-4-5

    Race 5:
This state-bred MSW at 6.5-furlongs over the Santa Anita grass appears more wide-open than the morning line suggests. That is because I am not in love with taking anything close to the 9-5-ML offering on career maiden #10 Booked Clubhouse. The Sean McCarthy trainee has hit the board in 4 of his 8 starts, but lacks speed and has burnt a decent amount of coin along the way. He will eventually find his friends, but it will not be with my backing. I will try to beat him with #6 Owl. The son of Sir Prancealot makes his second career start after a solid run at odds of 40-1 to finish fourth on debut. Veteran conditioner Neil Drysdale adds the blinkers, which hopefully leads to enough improvement to handle this large field of non-winners. I will take my chances it does at his morning line price or higher.

    Play: #6 Owl (5-1 ML)
    Picks: 6-1-10

    Race 7: Possibly Perfect
My final play of the afternoon in Arcadia comes in the aforementioned feature at 10-furlongs over the lawn where I like #3 Innovative. This group of nine set to go to post at 4:02 local time lacks early speed and I am hopeful it is jockey Ricky Gonzalez that takes advantage. The daughter of Complexity broke fine from her inside draw last out going one-mile in the Royal Heroine (G3), but was not ridden for early speed in a race that was always going to set far quicker fractions than this one. With the knowledge that this is a quarter mile longer and her best chance to get the distance is to get to the front and carry her speed all the way much like she did in her maiden breaker at 1 1/8-miles a little over a year ago over this same turf, the mission should be obvious. With an inside draw and the probable race shape, I am hopeful it is Gonzalez that gets to the front early and dictates terms throughout. If so, Innovative stands a very good chance of springing the minor upset.

    Play: #3 Innovative (5-1 ML)
    Picks: 3-2-8

      Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Spot Plays

      June 12, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

The Meadowlands has a 14-race card featuring Graduate Series and New Jersey Sires Stakes action. Comments and selection below are based on a fast track.

      Race 6 (8:40 PM EDT)

1-Emmas Mystery CCL (6-1)-This will be the 4th start off the bench and has raced well in 2 of 3, the exception was on a sloppy track. Put in a big try last time leaving from the 8 hole to finish 3rd. Will look for a kinder trip with the improved post draw and should offer a square price.
5-Respect N Honor (6-1)-Has been a bridesmaid in the last 2. Dexter Dunn drives for his 2nd straight and can be in the hunt at the wire.
8-Naked And Famous (3-1)-Won from the rail last time. This post draw hurts chances for another picture, but could still hit the ticket with a sharp steer.

      Exacta 1,5,8 Box

      1,5,8,

      Race 8 (9:30 PM EDT)

6-Super Chapter (5/2)-Banked over $1.2 million last year, put in a qualifier at M1 on 5-22 and won easily in 153.1. Another tune-up afterwards would have been nice but doesn't need to be dialed on high to beat this crew. Draws a choice starting slot and hopefully the program price holds up.
5-Monserrate (7/2)-Comes off 2 sharp wins, the last at Mohawk. Jason Bartlett will have in play and can be in the mix at the wire.
8-Mr Mouton (9/2)-Yannick Gingras will have the pedal down. Does have the gate speed to get a good early seat. Should be rolling hard late and will use underneath at a square price.

      Exacta 6/5,8

      6,5,8

      Race 10 (10:20 PM EDT)

3-Apex (9/5)-Was bet down to 4/5 last time and left from post 11. Dexter Dunn can make the most of this post draw. Looks like a winner with a smooth trip.
4-Diabolic Hill (3-1)-This the 2nd start off the bench after a Judges scratch on 5-23 and appeared short last time. Could improve and hit the bottom of the exacta.
6-American Power (9/2)-Winner of 3 straight will be tested. Could see the streak ending but still being in the hunt.

      Exacta 3/4,6

      3,4,6

Gulfstream Park Pick 6/Friday, June 12

        June 12, 2026 | By Frank Carulli

Gulfstream Park 20-Cent Rainbow Pick 6
        Friday, June 12

Gulfstream Park’s synthetic track will get a workout this Friday, June 12. Those who figure out what horses will run well over it could get a lucrative bonus. Five of the races that comprise the Rainbow Pick 6 wager will be run on the Tapeta surface, setting the stage for a 20-cent wager that begins with $32,594 in the carryover pool.

        Gulfstream Park 4th Race (2:26 p.m. EST)

NOAH’S DREAM carried his speed to win and a near miss from post 10 for his new barn and is a must-use on the ticket at 10-1 off a :34-4/5 workout. ROCKINGHAM JOE, intent to vacate the rail early, sustained a 4-wide rally until deep stretch but settled for his fourth consecutive in-the-money finish this year. He’s 1-for-25 but the same move with an alert start puts him in the winning mix. VELOCIRAPTOR, dismissed at 5-2 odds or less in eight starts since 2025, broke through with a photo-finish victory in a ‘key’ race at this distance after nine months away. He’s at the right level and should sit an ideal stalking trip off a runner-up finish at the $25,000 level.

        Gulfstream Park 5th Race (2:58 p.m. EST)

NO OTHER LIKE YOU ran second from on and off the pace in her last two starts on turf. But she has a good route race to summon when she last tested the Tapeta surface, breaking sharply, settling into an ideal ground-saving position but lacking room in the final quarter of a mile when finishing third. LOGISTICS, shuffled to mid-pack in a slow-paced long sprint on the grass, made a menacing move between runners to lead between calls in late stretch, only to be out-kicked to the wire. Like her off-the-pace tactics better on a surface on which she won four times. ILLANA will likely get more play than her 8-1 morning line, having sandwiched a pair of photo-finish setbacks on turf around an easy maiden win at this distance on Tapeta. But she’s not included on our Rainbow Pick 6 ticket, considering the rivals she defeated are a combined 59/0-5-9 to date.

        Gulfstream Park 6th Race (3:31 p.m. EST)

MODERN BEAUTY showed sharp speed, braced for the challenge of an even-money, first-time starter from the Saffie Joseph Jr. barn and finished a clear second in a promising debut on conventional dirt at Tampa Bay Downs. If she transitions to the synthetic surface, she should live up to favoritism and graduate today.

Gulfstream Park 7th Race (4:04 p.m. EST)BLUE SLIDE PARK fits well on his best effort but hasn’t shown much in four starts since a voided claim. He starts fresh for new connections and gets in light-weighted with some betting value attached. O’CAPTAIN, third in the 2022 Fountain of Youth (G-2), has yet to finish 1-2 on a fast dirt track and is winless at one mile, but a duplicate of a half-length setback last out on a ‘good’ strip makes him the one to beat.

        Gulfstream Park 8th Race (4:34 p.m. EST)

PRIVATE THOUGHTS ran 1-2-3 in consecutive six-figure route races on the Tapeta track to near $400k in earnings in 20 starts. He fired a blank as the favorite in a follow-up turf race but he gets back on Lasix and could get back on the winning track today. BAIL US OUT, second to Private Thoughts when last seen in December, could do just that in the rematch. He’s a steady, upper-80 Beyer and multiple Grade 3 placed going long. PAPA GOLF got first run and held off a trio of closers to win off a 10-month layoff. His dam, Saharan, was a stakes-placed sprinter and $179k earner as a 3-year-old. His trainer, Jose D’Angelo, won 194 races the last three years with turf-to-synthetic runners.

        Gulfstream Park 9th Race (5:05 p.m. EST)

Hitting the ‘ALL’ button in the finale, hoping the Rainbow is in sight.

        Suggested Rainbow Pick 6
        GP 4th Race: 3, 4, 6
        GP 5th Race: 5, 9
        GP 6th Race: 6
        GP 7th Race: 3, 6
        GP 8th Race: 2, 5, 6
        GP 9th Race: ALL
        Cost for a 20-Cent Ticket: $73.20

              Charles Town - Race #1 - Post: 7:00pm - Maiden Claiming - 4.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,500 Class Rating: 49

              Rating:

              #4 KING UNI (ML=4/1)
              #2 SALTY LIME (ML=6/1)

KING UNI - Arroyobueno rode this horse for the initial time last out and comes right back in today's contest. This rider/trainer duo has been producing a high winning percent, right around 30. This one probably isn't going to sit chilly. He should bust out of the gate and be one of the first to hit that tight turn. Watch for him down the lane. Finished out of the money last out at Charles Town, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 4/1 makes me think he's got a chance. SALTY LIME - This entrant could be tough this time around, especially since Larrosa rode last out and now should be acquainted with this one. This horse is at the top of my list of top contenders. His speed, along with a favorable post on this tight-track, should take him far in this one. This gelding is obviously on the improve with speed figs of 21, 35, 43 last three out.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #3 JUBA'SDIAMOND (ML=2/1), #8 MONTIE WHITE SHOES (ML=3/1), #6 SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT (ML=8/1),

JUBA'SDIAMOND - Hasn't raced or had any workouts since April 30th. Not much value on this morning-line choice. Multiple chances for this pony at Charles Town and still hasn't received his first victory here. MONTIE WHITE SHOES - Not probable that this horse will finish better than he did last out when placing seventh. SHOOK ME ALL NIGHT - Difficult to play at 8/1 odds after the last two efforts.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 KING UNI is the play if we get odds of 7/5 or better

                # 4 HARD SPIRITS 6/1
ROLL GYPSY ROLL looks competitive to best this field. Will probably compete admirably in the early pace battle which bodes well with this field. Recorded a very good speed figure last time out. She has been racing well lately while recording strong Equibase speed figs. MOLTO VINO - Has run well when moving a dirt route race. Has to be considered based on the decent speed figure recorded in the last race. HARD SPIRITS - Should finish in the money without any worries. Is a solid contender - given the 70 speed figure from her most recent race.

PRIVATE THOUGHTS has a competitive shot to take this race. He has been running admirably and the Equibase Speed Figures are among the strongest in this group of horses in this race. Posted a strong speed rating in the latest race. Can run another good one in this contest. Has run admirably when travelling a dirt route race. INDECISIVENESS - Appears to be the type to be helped on Lasix here. Has competitive front speed and will almost certainly fare admirably against this group. BAIL US OUT - He has very good class ratings, averaging 105, and has to be carefully examined in this event. Is worth careful consideration and may be a wager - strong speed figures (97 average) at today's distance and surface lately.

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

                    PURCHASE

                    Penn National - Race #1 - Post: 5:45pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $17,000 Class Rating: 76

                    Rating:

                    #4 ZAPATA (IRE) (ML=8/1)
                    #1 ROXTON (ML=15/1)

ZAPATA (IRE) - Chiappe was aboard this gelding in the last race and was impressed enough to take the animal right back. Trainer Bentley moves this horse down the ladder based on class to face a less competitive field. Look for a solid race given the class advantage. This gelding is in first-rate form right now. Ran third last time out and comes back promptly. ROXTON - Looking at today's class rating, this horse is meeting an easier group than last time out at Penn National.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 FREEDOM MAKER (ML=5/2), #5 BERMUDA TRIANGLE (ML=3/1), #8 HOT ROD KITTY (ML=9/2),

FREEDOM MAKER - He showed not much at all in the last contest. This gelding notched a speed figure in his last contest which likely isn't good enough in today's race. BERMUDA TRIANGLE - You always figure that this horse has a shot to cross the finish line in first, but he falls short often. HOT ROD KITTY - Tough to like the downward moving flow (71/57/47) of speed figures.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - ZAPATA (IRE) - Having the best speed fig last race of 79 at Penn National on May 28th. This gelding has an excellent chance to win here.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #4 ZAPATA (IRE) to win if you can get odds of 7/5 or more
