Scott Shapiro: Churchill Downs Spot Plays

      June 16, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

After a big weekend in the Mid-Atlantic and closing week out west at Santa Anita Park focus for most horseplayers will shift regions over the next couple of weeks. The Ohio Derby card at Thistledown headlines the stakes racing this weekend, but most of the best action leading up to that will be in New York and Kentucky.

My focus for the next couple of weeks will be my old stomping grounds of Churchill Downs. Derby weekend is the best, but some of the strongest wagering opportunities in Louisville come over the final few weeks of their spring meet. Hopefully, we can make the most of it starting with Wednesday’s nine-race card that kicks off at 12:45 PM eastern. Here are a few horses I like on the first of five racing dates under the twin spires this week.

      Race 3:
My first play of the week comes in this $50k maiden claimer at 7-furlongs over the main track where class dropper #5 Life’s Reward is likely to take a lot of public support. Not only does he exit protected maiden races last summer, but he is a Brad Cox trainee that will be ridden by Irad Ortiz Jr. The Gary & Mary West homebred is obviously capable of winning, but is almost guaranteed to be an underlay regardless of result. For that reason, I will side against him with a runner that has some upside still.

#8 My Lucky Penny debuted against slightly tougher at Keeneland in late April for trainer Matthew Sims. The son of Connect did not break particularly well that afternoon and then was moved up the inside to battle with the 6-5-favorite in the early stages. Not only is being down on the inside taking pressure not ideal for a debut runner, but the track did not favor that trip either on April 24. Therefore, I can forgive the fact that My Lucky Penny faded badly late to finish fifth. Now, Sims has given him nearly two months and he draws to the far outside in this compact group of 8. This should allow jockey Luan Machado to relax his gelding a bit more in the early stages, which ideally leaves him with far more energy late. At his 8-1-ML offering, I am very much willing to take my chances.

Play: #8 My Lucky Penny (8-1 ML)
      Picks: 8-7-5

      Race 5:
The pace scenario is murky in this seven-furlong dash over the main track for $50k starter allowance foes, but the price should be right to take a swing with #3 Frosty Indulgence. The 5YO gelding has earned 2 of his 3 career victories over the all-weather, but ran very well on the surface switch and cutback to a sprint in mid-April for trainer Chris Davis. In fact, he lost by a nose at odds of 25-1 in a first-level allowance at Keeneland, but was placed first via disqualification. The concern is whether jockey Luan Machado can avoid getting caught in a tight spot along the inside off a moderate early tempo, so I will need close to his morning line price to gamble. That said, his dirt race prior to this at Ellis last summer saw him get caught up in an early battle and tire badly late. That is not likely to occur in this spot, but I am hopeful he can use some of that gate speed to find early forward position. If so, I am confident he enters this spot in the best form of his career.

Play: #3 Frosty Indulgence (10-1 ML)
      Picks: 3-6-8

      Race 8:
The pace should be honest at the very least in this $141k allowance at 6-furlongs over the main track given the presence of #4 Tough Catch and #8 Macho Music. Neither 4YO colt enters this spot in their best form regardless of pace and are unlikely to have much left late in the final furlong. I am hopeful the pace is fast enough to set things up for #6 Thoughtthatcounts. The son of Sky Mesa makes his second start of the meet after his second consecutive runner-up finish since returning to Kentucky this spring. The prior one came at odds of 22-1 at Keeneland and in both starts he was done no real favors. Last out over the off track here at Churchill Downs, the 5YO gelding ran into an off-track front running monster in Harrodsburg and prior to that he nearly overcame being caught wide throughout at a big price. Given his previous success over this racetrack and his ability to finish, Thoughtthatcounts looms large in the Wednesday feature.

      Play: #6 Thoughtthatcounts (9-2 ML)
      Picks: 6-2-5

Royal Ascot Betting Primer & Wager Guide | Tues 6/16

        June 15, 2026 | By 1/ST BET

        Today’s Skinny:
Day 1 of 5 from the prestigious Royal Ascot stand is headlined by a trio of Grade 1 races and some names quite familiar to American racing enthusiasts. Last year’s Breeders’ Cup Mile winner Notable Speech should go as favorite in the Group 1 Queen Anne in the meet’s opening race for Godolphin, Charlie Appleby and William T. Buick.

Undefeated Bow Echo looks for five straight as England’s headliner in the Group 1 St. James’s Palace, where 2025 Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf winner Gstaad stands in the way for Coolmore, Aidan O’Brien and Ryan Moore. Kentucky Downs’ 2025 Nashville Derby winner Wimbledon Hawkeye takes his shot in the 10-furlong Wolferton Stakes.

The Group 2 Coventry is the meet’s first juvenile dash and goes with 22 entered – while the Group 1 King Charles III lines 26 across the grass in a 5-furlong melee. Jockey John Velazquez has the call on Irish trainer Joseph O’Brien’s Aeronautic in the Copper Horse.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #2
#3 MIDNIGHT LEGACY (4-1) Ascending speed figures, couldn’t catch stablemate, third start of cycle.
#4 RIOJA ALTA (5-2) Takes some catching with duplicate of latest start at this distance.
#1 WHICH SIDE R U ON (6-1) Runner-up in $25k debut, outrun in MSW company, good fit for $15k.
Race Summary MIDNIGHT LEGACY saved ground, bid at the quarter pole but couldn’t gain on his winning stablemate. He has improved with Lasix and appears rounding to a winning effort in his third start this year. Bet to win and place and play 3-1 and 3-4 exactas.
          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #3
#6 HUNGRY REGGAE (5-1) Perhaps bounced on short rest after maiden romp, can use her speed well.
#1 LADY CHAOS (2-1) Impressive rally in 5F debut, runner-up came back with 9-1/2-length MSW romp.
#2 TURBO LADY (9-2) Piling up the checks at various distances, beaten favorite five times.
Race Summary HUNGRY REGGAE stalked the dueling top pair in the 5-path and couldn’t gain in her first allowance test. But she romped to a maiden victory off nearly a year layoff in the race prior. She figures up close to a softer pace in this field and gets more rest between starts. Bet to win and place and play 6-1, 6-2 and 1-6 exactas.
          Horseshoe Indianapolis - Race #4
#7 KEEPIN IT CLASSY (6-1) Hit board in all six starts last year, second off similar layoff, has 10 wins here.
#1 COACH KNIGHT (9-2) Four thirds in last five starts for a claiming tag, class drop could make difference.
#3 MR. SENSEI (3-1) Wire-to-wire winner two back at Betfair Park can use his speed well in this spot.
Race Summary KEEPIN IT CLASSY compiled a 6/2-2-2 Horseshoe record as a 9-year-old last year, mostly at this level. He was last seen in October, overcoming early trouble to finish third behind Prince of Pennies (5-23, $65k), who went wire-to-wire in an open $5,000 claimer at Turfway Park next out. Bet to win and place and play a 1-3-7 exacta box.
          Fairmount Park - Race #1
#7 LAST CANDY (7-2) Kept quality company as a 2-year-old, like her chances in local debut.
#5 RAZ ON FIRE (4-5) Battling severe case of seconditis, spanning 5F to one mile.
#1 FANCY FEET (9-2) Finished behind ‘Raz’, appears best of the rest, moves outside in.
Race Summary LAST CANDY, stakes-placed when last seen in a long sprint at Hawthorne in October, figures tough if ready for her first start as a 3-year-old. Her company lines stand out. She met winning favorites Special Sauce, Zee and Tiz China before the stakes race and that trio is a combined 21/6-7-4 with $185k in earnings to date. Bet to win and place and play a 7-5-ALL trifecta.
          Fairmount Park - Race #3
#5 AWESOME SUNDAY (6-5) Ideal spot to end year-long winless drought, stands 5-17 at 6F.
#7 ALTERNATIVE GRACE (5-1) Awakened in this barn, troubled in three-peat try, sheds 7 pounds.
#1 SCRAPBOOK (15-1) Steadied into turn, regrouped to finish second to 6-to-5 winner.
Race Summary AWESOME SUNDAY stalked the pace 4-wide and was in range of odds-on winner What’s Crackin (6-29, $135k) and next-out winner Bethy until late stretch. She gets class relief and holds a tactical advantage in a field that lacks speed. Bet to win and place and play 5-1 and 5-7 exactas.
          Fairmount Park - Race #4
#7 WIN WITH COLOR (Even) Rallied wide for second in sprint, can stalk and pounce from up-close in here.
#1 LUTION (8-1) Running lines dotted with next-out winners, hit board in last three tries at one mile.
#6 GIRLS KNICKS NOW (5-2) Improved in this barn, plays catch-me-if-you-can at new distance.
Race Summary WIN WITH COLOR broke sharp, settled off the pace and rallied 4-wide to finish second to the late-running favorite. The 6F race timed 4/5 slower than a same-day, $10,000 optional claiming race, so give her the nod in here for top connections. Make a flat win bet and play 7-1 and 7-6 exactas and a 7-1-ALL trifecta.

                # 3 CRIMSON NIGHTS 5/1
ROCK STAR PARKING looks to be a decent contender. Always good to invest in a trainer with this kind of very good win percentage - 20 percent - at this distance & surface. Should be considered a solid choice on earnings per start at the distance/surface alone. Always seems to be close up on the wire. MACI'S WORLD - Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this equine look decent in this outing. Looks like a solid player for the exotics. CRIMSON NIGHTS - Win percentage one of the best in this field. Shows signs of the look of a profitable play, averaging a solid 64 speed rating which is one of the most favorable in this group.

                  Louisiana Downs - Race #4 - Post: 5:29pm - Maiden Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $7,500 Class Rating: 59

                  Rating:

                  #4 FOSFORITO (ML=4/1)

FOSFORITO - Ran last race out against much better company at Louisiana Downs. The move down the class ladder should suit him well. Have to like the way Witt has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today. I think Louisiana Downs players know a good thing when they see the rider/handler tandem of Lozada and Witt. Their winning percentage together has been wonderful. Has a good chance to break maiden changing to the main track in this event. This animal is not the morning line choice, yet he finished ahead of today's chalk in their last race together. Just see his last fig, 66. That one fits well in this bunch.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #1 DOES NOT COMPUTE (ML=7/2), #8 DIXIE STRONG (ML=7/2), #7 JONESBOOGIE (ML=9/2),

DOES NOT COMPUTE - Today's event is 6 1/2 furlongs. Hasn't finished in the money in a sprint race in the last 60 days. Not the best of signals. Shins may have soreness since they added front bandages in the last race. DIXIE STRONG - This gelding is always in the money, but just doesn't finish on top. Hard to play him on the front end. Improbable that the speed rating he registered on May 26th will hold up in this contest. JONESBOOGIE - Hasn't been close to winning at all lately. Doubtful that the speed figure he recorded on June 8th will be good enough in this event.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - FOSFORITO - This mount has recorded gains in his speed figures over his last two events. Don't overlook this gelding in your wagering.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 FOSFORITO to win at post-time odds of 1/1 or better

                    # 1 OLAZABAL 5/2
                    # 7 MAD MAGIC 5/1
                    # 2 OCTOBER BLISS 10/1
OLAZABAL is my choice. Sells has this gelding racing well and is a decent pick based on the strong Equibase Speed Figures earned in route races lately. Has been running soundly lately and will probably be up on the front end early on. The average class rating alone makes this horse a solid contender. MAD MAGIC - Ferraro is trying to score with this horse by bringing him back so quickly. The winning percentage shown by horses entered by Ferraro running at this distance are the most favorable in this field. OCTOBER BLISS - Montanez has him trained admirably to break quickly out of the starting gate.

                      Presque Isle Downs - Race #3 - Post: 4:24pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 89

                      Rating:

                      #5 MOR SPRING SPIRIT (ML=8/1)
                      #3 RIDING A DREAM (ML=3/1)
                      #6 GOODIE GOOMER (ML=8/1)

MOR SPRING SPIRIT - This gelding won at this distance on January 23rd and was at a higher class than today. This horse could be tough this time around, especially since Rojas rode last time around the track and now should be familiar with this one. Faced tougher last out at Presque Isle Downs. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker group, so I will put this animal on my list of contenders. You have to bet this animal at a track he likes. There's nothing like being comfortable out on the track when it's time to race. RIDING A DREAM - Lots of positive 'vibrations' connected with this horse and his stable. GOODIE GOOMER - A big drop down in class figure points from his June 1st race at Presque Isle Downs. Based on that key piece of info, I will give this thoroughbred the advantage. The morning line odds on this gelding are higher than those of the other entrant from the shedrow of conditioner Arriagada. Often the longer-priced part of a 'split' entry wins. Gallardo was aboard this gelding in the last race and was impressed enough to take the horse right back. This horse wins a lot of money per race. I believe he can augment that bankroll today. Lets try to beat the favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a pretty decent race.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #1 SPAN OF CONTROL (ML=5/2), #2 SMOKIN' HOT (ML=4/1), #4 STRAIGHTOUTADUTTON (ML=5/1),

SPAN OF CONTROL - Registered a substandard speed rating in the last race in an $8,000 Claiming race on May 18th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that figure. SMOKIN' HOT - He's probably going to get roasted on the front end. STRAIGHTOUTADUTTON - Hard to keep chasing this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse. Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some success lately in sprint races in order to back him. Even though victorious in last, didn't finish the way you'd like to see when stepping up to face stronger competition.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #5 MOR SPRING SPIRIT on top if we're getting at least 9/2 odds
