    Churchill Downs Spot Plays

    June 20, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

There are just two Saturdays left at the Churchill Downs Spring Meet with next week’s final one being Stephen Foster (G1) Day. Tonight’s slate will be a “Downs After Dark” card meaning first post is not until 6PM eastern. The 10-race slate is headlined by the Chicago (G3) at 7-furlongs over the main track. Here are the horses I like most on the evening, including my top choice in the feature.

    Race 4:
The pace should be honest to fast in this $30k non-winners of two lifetime event at one-mile over the sod. This should benefit Florida-bred #3 The Town. The $150k OBS March ’25 purchase debuted in dirt races for trainer Brad Cox, but eventually moved to two-turn turf races where he has a win and a second in four starts. The last two have been off the board efforts, but have come against stronger competition than he encounters today. Cox has given the 3YO colt time since an arduous winter and early spring in Florida and legs up Irad Ortiz Jr. The Town’s lack of gate speed has always left him with a lot to do late, but the probable race shape really should set things up for his strong late run.

Play: #3 The Town (4-1 ML)
    Picks: 3-2-11

    Race 8:
My next “Downs After Dark” play comes in another one-mile excursion over the turf, but this one for $80,000 claimers that have never won two races. #1 Mesa Magic stretches out to a true route of ground for the first in over a year for Al Stall Jr. and finds a favorable spot to do so. The Good Magic gelding drops in class and draws the rail after breaking from the far outside in a turf sprint on May 17. Stall takes the blinkers off and attracts Luis Saez for the first time this year. Given the overall lack of early zip signed on, I am hopeful it is the aggressive Saez who uses his post and his runner’s tactical speed to find a favorable forward position in the early stages. If he is able to do so and avoid getting caught up in a tussle on the backstretch, he has a strong chance of finishing off a somewhat underwhelming group to kick off the late Pick 3.

Play: #1 Mega Magic (7-2 ML)
    Picks: 1-2-6

    Race 9: Chicago (G3)
The Saturday night feature looks like a bit of a two-filly race between #2 Eclatant and #5 Usha. Eclatant really has turned a corner in 2026 after disappointing as a 4YO for Stonestreet Stables and Brad Cox. The daughter of Into Mischief ran huge in her return race at Gulfstream Park in February before putting in a monster effort besting Grand Job by a nose in the Madison (G1). Cox has given Eclatant extra time after the career best run, but I am still concerned about how much the race took out of her. Therefore, swallowing her 6-5-ML price does not seem wise, so I will go to second choice Usha. The $600,000 NY-bred makes her third start of the form cycle after a gutsy head win over #4 Zeitlos in the Winning Colors (G3) in late May. She has run well in both starts over this surface and should get a cleaner trip than the favorite breaking from the 5-hole. She will not be a big price, but she is solid value at her 3-1-morning line offering.

    Play: #5 Usha (3-1 ML)
    Picks: 5-2-6

Al Cimaglia: Northfield Park Spot Plays

      June 20, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

Northfield Park has a 15-race card featuring Ohio Sires Stakes action. The Spot Plays are in Race 5, Race 8, and Race 11. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 5 (7:28 PM EDT)

8-Mollys Ace N (9/2)-Beat this kind back in April, then faced better and the water was too deep. Dan Noble steers and was between the pipes on 4-11. Went gate to wire that night leaving from post 4 against this kind. Comes off a dull try and now drops to a level of past success. Camera-shy mare has the gate speed to land in a decent seat off the car. Noble should be aggressive against this field. If things go well around the opening turn it could lead to a picture at a square price.

      8-Mollys Ace N (9/2) Betting to Win

      8-5-4

      Race 8 (8:34 PM EDT)

3-Rock Son (6-1)-Noble gets the call tonight and that could make a winning difference. First time Noble attracts interest but the 3-year-old has only 2 wins and should offer a square price. Raced at Nfld and took a picture going gate to wire. Seems to do its best work racing at the top of the stack and should get that trip here. Will use on top and underneath in Exactas.

3-Rock Son (6-1) Using in Exactas

      3/2,4,6
      2,4,6/3

      3-4-2-6

      Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

5-Myboypank (9/2)-Looking for a solid price and the Tony Alagna pupil came off the bench hot (5-3-2-0). The son of Catch The Fire is versatile, can win coming off cover, on the lead or racing near the top. Finished 3rd in its only start at Nfld and has done good work facing Ohio Sires Stakes company. Comes off a sharp effort to finish 2nd and could be sitting on a big try.

      5-Myboypank (9/2)-Betting to Win

      5-2-4

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Churchill Downs - Race #7
#10 Shared Vision She has always run well locally and is capable of something better than she showed when last of three in that April run here. Could see her getting a nice run of things from out here.
#5 French Blue There are a couple classy tries on her page, but I am a little worried about how she has given away ground late in her last couple allowance starts. In the mix, but potentially vulnerable late.
#1 Balaclava She's up in class out of the claiming score at first asking, but she finished up pretty nicely in that 20/1 upset and presumably has a little bit of upside while making just her second start. For a piece at a price?
Race Summary Shared Vision was flat last time out, but she should be in a good spot into the turn today and stacks up well enough here with her better stuff.
          Churchill Downs - Race #9
#4 Zeitlos She's meeting a few pretty sharp players in here, but she has always been this kind of caliber on her better days, so I'm hoping she's along late at a price after just missing last out.
#5 Usha She handled the top choice when they recently met, but her 7-furlong form carries the spottiest lines on her page, so I'm not totally sure she's going to back it up with another score here.
#8 Foie Gras She's in pretty sharp form right now and was just in the frame with the top pair in the last one. Not impossible today.
Race Summary Fun race -- didn't even list #2 Ecletant, who might be the most likely winner in here but could come back to earth a bit after a couple big runs. Zeitlos leads the way with some finishing form and should offer another fair price on the board.
          Churchill Downs - Race #10
#11 Raging Current She's up a step off the claim, but the two- and three-back runs aren't far off what it might take to land this, so maybe she can bounce back here at a nice number for the new team.
#6 Debby's Gal Think she might get back to her better form today while moving back in with claiming company on the dirt, as these types of conditions produced the best form on her page. Dangerous.
#3 Diagram She's always dicey late, but she has never been in this easy and might be able to shake free of this cheaper cast. In the mix. Tough to trust.
Race Summary Raging Current has a bit of appealing form from the spring runs at Oaklawn, and she might get a good prompting trip for the new barn while looking to rebound off the fade job last out.

            #6
            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Woodbine - Race #2
#6 INSTANT RESPONSE (7-2) Tailed off after chasing turf stakes winner, returns to lawn for 3yo debut.
#4 MANCHESTER ICE (2-1) Solid foundation of works for high-percentage first-out barn.
#1 HOWSITGOINOWEN (5-2) Got makeover, dueled to stretch at this distance, switches to the turf.
Race Summary INSTANT RESPONSE ran well in his only start on turf as a 2-year-old off a three-month layoff. He rallied for third behind a talented filly named Final Accord, who came back to win the Grade 3 Matron Stakes on the Aqueduct lawn and run second in the recent Penn Oaks. Hoping he’s ready for his seasonal debut today. Bet to win and place and play 6-1, 6-4 and 4-6 exactas.
            Woodbine - Race #4
#5 FLATTER FOR CAT (5-2) Champion sire won debut and three graded stakes for same owner and trainer.
#1 SARAYU (4-1) Like the :48 gate work June 7, sire was Grade 1 sprint winner at Del Mar.
#2 AWESOME GRACE (2-1) Took money off fastest-of-103 work but wilted at 5F, experience helps.
Race Summary FLATTER FOR CAT tries to follow the footsteps of her sire, Canadian 2yo champion Avie’s Flatter ($947k), and her dam, stakes-winning sprinter Carrera Cat, for a barn in this midst of an 8-for-34 streak with first-time starters. She meets several other well-bred debut runners, so keep tabs on the odds. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 5 over 1, 2, 5, 7 exacta.
            Woodbine - Race #7
#4 PIPER’S FACTOR (6-1) Fastest-of-106 work since comeback win, strong 7-1/2F turf race to summon.
#3 RAPID TEST (5-2) Turf stakes winner at distance made move, finished between sharp duo on Tapeta.
#8 AWESOME BOURBON (7-2) Ascended optional claiming ranks to win three straight on turf last Fall.
Race Summary PIPER’S FACTOR led until the closing yards and earned his top speed figure in a 7-1/2F turf race with Vives aboard a year ago. He showed some versatility in a hard-fought, 6F comeback win on the all-weather track. He will need his A-game in today’s featured race but should offer plenty of value for a win and place wager. Also play a 3-4-8 exacta box.

                  # 2 MOPO 5/2
BOUJEE BUBBLEZ looks to be the bet in here. The Lasix change (now going off Lasix) may spark a major improvement for this filly. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by McMahon have shown very solid results recently. Has been running strongly lately and will probably be up on the front end early on. CONQUERTHOSEWECAN - This filly has posted some nice finishes in her last several tries. She has to be given a chance given the very strong speed figs. MOPO - Has performed admirably recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 85 avg speed fig.

                    Royal Ascot - Race #5 - Post: 12:00pm - Stakes - 6.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $219,000 Class Rating: 107 Wokingham H.

                    Rating:

                    #29 BLACK FORZA (ML=60/1)
                    #16 FANDOM (GB) (ML=20/1)
#17 FAR ABOVE DREAM (IRE) (ML=15/1)
                    #4 DOUBLE RUSH (IRE) (ML=7/2)
                    #27 SONDAD (GB) (ML=15/1)

BLACK FORZA - In the last race, finished seventh on the soft turf at NAA. Should do much better right here in this race. Although this colt has limited experience around here, he has showed his class by running well at a major foreign track. Lower weight of -9. In my opinion, a movement of 5 is important, so this colt falls into this category. FANDOM (GB) - We have lots of early speed with this thoroughbred. He could wire this field. This gelding is in exceptional condition right now. Ran first last time out and comes back rapidly. Possibly a peak effort for this gelding today. Been getting closer to the winner with each recent start. This animal likes to win at multiple tracks. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call. Handicapping information show this racer with three improving speed figures. Levey should be on a horse ready to win in this event. Although this gelding has limited experience around here, he has showed his class by running well at a major foreign race track. FAR ABOVE DREAM (IRE) - A little change in scenery has got to do this horse well. Reading the past performances, it seems like he likes to visit the winner's circle at multiple race tracks. This horse gets shipped over here after running well at a major foreign track. A good sign in my opinion. DOUBLE RUSH (IRE) - I do like foreign imports that have run well at a major foreign track. SONDAD (GB) - This gelding is in exceptional form right now. Finished first in the last race and comes back soon. Trainer, Easterby, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. You have to like that last race speed fig, 107, which is the best last race speed figure of this field.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 BINHAREER (IRE) (ML=3/1), #25 REALIGN (FR) (ML=8/1),

BINHAREER (IRE) - Won't be easy for this racer to beat this field off of that last speed fig. Doubtful to improve enough to run a figure anywhere near today's Equibase class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list. REALIGN (FR) - Don't think that this gelding has value at 8/1 this time.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - FANDOM (GB) - At THI on May 31st this gelding posted a speed figure of 107 in his last race. He has the top last figure in the field.

                      Rating:

                      #4 STAR ATTRACTION (ML=7/2)
                      #8 HAWBERRY (ML=12/1)

STAR ATTRACTION - Running 1 1/16 miles on the turf, you've have to look at horse's turf figures. This horse has the tops in the bunch. Attard is giving this one Lasix for the first time. I think it's a good move. This filly's last rating garnered on Sep 13th is at the top in last race speed figures. HAWBERRY - Jones and Cole perform well when they combine forces. It's hard to beat a +255 return on investment for a jockey and handler. This is this filly's first try on the grass. Ran well finishing first on May 23rd. The track was slow that day, so I think this equine will take to the turf. This filly is in fine physical condition, having run a strong race on May 23rd, finishing first.

                      Vulnerable Contenders: #3 REVELER'S ROW (ML=5/2), #10 LA CULASSE (ML=4/1), #6 EL BARRIO (ML=6/1),

REVELER'S ROW - Has tasted defeat as the favorite in back to back races. A repeat is probably in store. Unlikely that the speed figure she registered on May 23rd will hold up in this event. LA CULASSE - No value in throwing a few bucks at this questionable contender. Probably won't improve off that May 30th race. EL BARRIO - This animal hasn't shown very much in the last couple of events. One should normally not play a questionable contender in the next race after finishing off the board following a long breather.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - STAR ATTRACTION - Blinks on and you cannot bet wrong. This horse should be long gone.

BABBLE looks respectable to best this group of horses in this race and is a formidable value-based bet given the 12/1 line. Has run admirably when running a turf route race. BRIGHTY - Should best this group here, showing competitive figures of late. Has to be given a chance based on the quite good speed figure put up in the last competition. ALRASIKH - Carrasco has a very solid win percentage with horses racing in turf route races. Posted a very strong speed rating last time out.
