Scott Shapiro: Churchill Downs Spot Plays

    June 26, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

Just three days left at the Churchill Downs spring meeting with two huge ones to follow this weekend. Before we get to Stephen Foster Day and an extremely strong closing day slate on Sunday, there is a solid 11-race card today that kicks off at 12:45 PM eastern. I have started cold early this week, but hopefully am about to heat up with the spot plays I have this afternoon.

    Race 8:
#5 Fast Gun is the understandable 5-2-ML favorite in this two-turn MSW event for fillies and mares. The Peter Blum homebred tries a route of ground for the first time after a third-place run in her first start over an off track on May 22. Hall of Famer Steve Asmussen turns to Jose Ortiz, which is hard to fault, but she has taken very little public support thus far. Plus, she has never really be a contender at the wire making her tough to endorse at her likely off odds. I prefer second-time starter #1 Curlin’s Charm. The $400k Keeneland September ’24 purchase broke a half step slow in her first start 20 days ago for veteran conditioner Rusty Arnold. The pedigree is there to love more ground and the inside draw should benefit her chances of making significant improvement off of her solid debut performance. Axel Concepcion returns to ride the daughter of Curlin, who can hopefully fix the gate issues that put her behind the 8-ball on June 6.

    Play: #1 Curlin’s Charm (6-1 ML)
    Picks: 1-5-2

    Race 9:
I am going to hope it is a good day for Rusty Arnold since I will take a swing with his entry in this first-level allowance event at one-mile over the grass as well. #1 High South makes her first start since a pair of races over the Gulfstream Park lawn this winter. The first one came off the layoff in late January when the Calumet Farm homebred put in a decent run to earn fourth. She followed it up with a mid-pack sixth in a race where she was caught three-wide throughout under jockey Mario Gutierrez. Arnold has given High South time since those two runs and has her well spotted with a favorable inside draw to take advantage of a contentious early pace. Jockey Christian Torres was onboard for her maiden braker over this surface last June and will be back in the saddle for the first time since. Hopefully, he is able to save ground early and come with a strong run late. The price should be right in this wide-open start to the late Pick 3.

Play: #1 High South (12-1 ML)
    Picks: 1-5-6

    Race 10:
My final play on the day comes in this second-level allowance event at 1 1/8-miles over the main track where #1 Master Controller intrigues. Trainer Brittany Vanden Berg added the blinkers for the first time on this son of Tapiture before his first-level allowance race off of three-months rest on May 14. It resulted in a career best run where the 4YO colt showed good early speed, but was forced to back off the aggressive pacesetter before re-engaging him and taking control under regular rider Chris Emigh. Master Controller had enough left late to hold off next out winner Render Judgment and should find himself in a prominent position once again in the early stages. If he can take a step forward off of his victory six weeks ago, he fits extremely well with this bunch. The ML price makes him worth a play, especially considering both of his victories have come in Louisville.

    Play: #1 Master Controller
    Picks: 1-4-5

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Spot Plays

      June 26, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has a big 10-race card. The headliners come in Race 8, the Messenger Pace Final and Race 9 The MGM Trot Final. The Spot Plays below are in Race 5, Race 8, and Race 9. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 5 (8:05 PM EDT)

3-Elegant A (9/2)-Will look for a square price in a race where the best horse has the 8-hole. This lightly raced 8-year-old has hit the board in 3 of 5 this year with 1 picture. This will be the 1st time it will have 2 consecutive races at Yonkers in sequence since October. This is the 3rd start since 6-13 after racing only 3 times in May. Colin Kelly will be leaving, and should be no worse than in the pocket when the wings fold. Likes a top of the stack trip and should get it here.

Playing #3 Elegant A to Win

      3-8-4

      Race 8 (9:05 PM EDT)

3-Al Papi (7/2)-The Burke pupil is 0-5 this season but take that with a grain of salt. This is a nice field but Odds On Mr Mamba isn't working tonight. Started the year on smaller ovals and wasn't raced aggressively off the gate. But in the last 2 races against NA Cup foes was used off the car but others were better down the lane. This race could shape up differently and Yannick Gingras can get a close-up seat around the opening turn. A pocket trip could be coming behind the program chalk #2 Fragment, and then Papi could be the best down the lane.

Playing #3 Al Papi to Win

      3-2-7

      Race 9 (9:25 PM EDT)

4-Silverstein (3-1)-Matt Kakaley should take control early and make the most of starting from post 4. The program chalk Spencer Hanover has to deal with drawing post 8 and will need to rally down the lane most likely. Banking on this extra distance race to play out like most and favor front speed. If so, the edge goes to this 3-year-old who has won 2 of 3 since coming off the bench. The only loss came from post 9. Won its last start going gate to wire and could double up tonight.

      Playing #4 Silverstein to Win

      4-8-3

Colonial Downs Bet 3/Friday, June 26

        June 26, 2026 | By Frank Carulli

        Colonial Downs Pick 3
        Friday, June 26

Turf, turf and more turf. That’s the buzzword as Colonial Downs begins its Summer Meet this weekend. The Friday (Day 2) card closes with five consecutive races on the grass, three for fillies and mares that make up the $3 Late Pick 3 ticket listed below.

Colonial Downs 6th Race (2:55 EST)

CHAMPAGNE BRUNCH leaves the barn of Gulfstream Park leading trainer Saffie Joseph Jr., but she is worth a live longshot look, nonetheless, to break her maiden off a four-month layoff. Her turf resume includes two one-mile placings at Gulfstream, a pace-setting fade to finish between four next-out winners at Kentucky Downs (avg 75 Beyer) and a brutal trip last out when she was steadied repeatedly and checked out of the race with apparent run on the final turn. She also has some speed, a big plus in this field. IMPROBABLE TALE, fractious in the gate and widest on the final turn, rallied to just miss as the lone first-time starter in a MSW race turf route at Laurel Park. SWEET LITTLE LILA, out-kicked by the winning favorite twice in MSW company at Aqueduct a 2-year-old, could break through with a victory for Team Russell at the same distance.

        Colonial Downs 7th Race (3:25 p.m. EST)

ACHIEVE controlled a moderate pace but found gears as needed in a visually impressive repeat victory in a $25,000 optional claiming race. She beat a weaker field on paper than she meets today, but the winning time was only 2/5 slower than a same-day stakes race for older fillies and mares. She is today’s Pick 3 solo play. Add EPIC STYLE to the ticket if there are any scratches on our suggested ticket. She broke her maiden from post 12 at this distance on the Fair Grounds lawn, posted a pair of 87 Beyers when rallying for second at 5-1/2F recently, now draws the rail for trainer Michael Stidham, who is 17/6-4-2 since May 16 with stretch-out turf runners.

        Colonial Downs 8th Race (3:56 p.m. EST)

Eight of the 12 entrants in this maiden claimer last raced at different tracks. The arrive with a combined 37/0-7-3 record on the lawn. Go deep in the final leg of the sequence, with a lean toward HOTTER THAN FIRE, who raced 3-wide on the turns, vied between rivals in the stretch and got caught by the favorite in a longer route race at Laurel Park.

        Suggested $3 Pick 3
        CNL 6th Race: 1, 6, 7
CNL 7th Race: 10 (add #1 if scratched)
        CNL 8th Race: 2, 3, 6, 7, 11
        Cost for a $3 ticket: $45

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Churchill Downs - Race #8
#8 Bodacious Bay Tactical type probably still has a little bit of upside, and she should be be in line for a nice run of things in a race without a ton of serious pace. Dangerous today.
#5 Fast Gun She finished just behind the top choice when they met last out, and she's another with a bit of positional speed that might play well in this spot. Wouldn't argue that hard with you if you landed here.
#1 Curlin's Charm She finished up OK in the debut try, and she has some room to improve while stretching out with the debut race under her belt. Wouldn't be a surprise.
Race Summary Bodacious Bay seems tough here with any kind of step forward off the last one, but this is a fun race with a couple of win candidates who aren't even listed here, so trust your gut and demand an honest price.
          Churchill Downs - Race #9
#6 Conceit Tactical type should get a good run of things and might appreciate the move back to the turf for this first start since January. Feels like the right one here.
#7 Leinani She gets on the grass for the first time for a dangerous barn, and she has similar positional pace to the top choice, so I could see them racing close together much of the way here.
#10 Viva Vienne Honestly think one of the top pair will land it, but I think this one has some price potential while getting back around two turns. A couple of those route races weren't bad and could share at a nice number.
Race Summary Conceit and Leinani have fairly similar profiles here, but Conceit is proven on the turf and gets the slight edge. #11 Noshametohergame worth a look, too.
          Churchill Downs - Race #10
#1 Master Controller Tougher test for him today, but I like the way he won that last one and think he could still be stepping into better form at this point in the campaign. Price should be right again with a forward trip waiting for him.
#3 Interceptor Reliable form makes him tough, and he was second to a very tough distance horse last time around. Looks tough if he can bring that kind of effort on the cutback.
#2 Extensive He's another with some tough names on his page, and he has some back form that might keep him in the picture as he stretches out in the second start back. Lots of things to like.
Race Summary Master Controller has a bit of appeal at what should be an OK number on the board, and he's probably in the picture if he has another step forward in him. Some interest in #11 American Promise on a backup play.

            #6
            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Colonial Downs - Race #1
#6 KUHNER (6-1) Showed pulse in erratic debut, steps into MSW company, price attached.
#1 OCEAN SOUND (2-1) Awakened on surface switch with blinkers on, caught by 1-to-5 fave.
#3 STATE CONCEAL (3-2) Second to the odds-on fave, six months after voided claim.
Race Summary KUHNER bore out on the turn, drifted in near the sixteenth pole and was disqualified to 12th in an otherwise useful debut. He finished behind three next-out winners, two with upper-60 Beyers. Bet to win and place and play 6-1, 6-3 an 1-6 exactas.
            Colonial Downs - Race #3
            #7 KARA M S (15-1) Longshot stab in a field that is a combined 49/0-4-3.
#4 KINDA KRAZY (8-5) In the money in her last three sprints for higher claiming prices.
#8 MISS MOTOWN (2-1) Dueled to stretch and ran second with blinks on, can be excused for latest.
Race Summary Taking a price shot on KARA M S, who dueled outside the winner on the backstretch, between rivals into the turn and faded. She takes another class drop and finished ‘willingly’ from off the pace the only time Ruiz was aboard. Bet to win and place and play a 4-7-8 exacta box.
            Colonial Downs - Race #4
#9 PEAK PERSPECTIVE (5-2) Should graduate soon, but she only shows two published works since April 7.
#4 PELICAN PIER (8-1) Second against the boys in debut, second to runaway firster in follow-up.
#7 POLE POSITION (2-1) Firster tries to fuel Trombetta’s bid for a fourth Colonial Downs training title.
Race Summary PEAK PERSPECTIVE chased the odds-on winner and a next-out Maiden Special Weight victor when third two starts ago at Keeneland, then braced for a powerful last-to-first move and held second at Churchill Downs at today’s distance. The $310,000 sales buy could top $85,000 in earnings with a win. Bet to win and place and play 9-4 and 9-7 exactas.

Lone Star Park - Race #2 - Post: 7:02pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $16,000 Class Rating: 50

                  Rating:

                  #4 ALWAYS GIDGET (ML=12/1)
                  #5 ONENITE OFMISCHIEF (ML=9/2)
                  #1 CLARISIT (ML=12/1)

ALWAYS GIDGET - This jockey/handler duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +101. I know the stable is serious today. The filly gets Lasix for the 1st time. ONENITE OFMISCHIEF - There's something to be said for a change of surface. Last race this equine didn't like the terrain, but if you look two back on the grass at Evangeline Downs, there was a great effort. I look for that again today. This speedy sort is shortening up today. Should help her chances of winning. Adding blinkers often leads to improvement on the racetrack. CLARISIT - Look for this filly to run lots better today. Last contest at Lone Star Park finishing sixth on a track listed as good is no sign of her true ability. This horse is in the top spot in earnings per start. She looks nice in today's race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #9 EAGLE VISION (ML=8/5), #3 CHARGENLUCKY (ML=4/1), #7 SLEEPY ROSE (ML=5/1),

EAGLE VISION - Hard to take this less than sharp equine at these odds after the result (sixth) in the last race. Doubtful for this participant to make a winning move with no success lately in a sprint contest. You figure that this equine is going to be first just because she's always close. Just doesn't finish first regularly. CHARGENLUCKY - Looked like she was in good form on June 6th. Hasn't been near the track since then though. Not a positive sign. When examining today's class rating, she will have to earn a much better speed figure than last out to vie in this turf sprint. SLEEPY ROSE - Can't invest in this vulnerable equine in today's sprint of 5 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a short distance event recently.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 ALWAYS GIDGET is going to be the play if we are getting 3/1 or better

                    # 8 PADRINA 5/2
                    # 9 MYLLAY D 6/1
CASH ME LEW is the top wager in this race. Ran a sharp last race. Is worth considering and may be a bet - strong Speed Figures (68 average) at today's distance and surface lately. This colt has some longshot handicapping angles I like to wager on. PADRINA - Could provide positive returns based on formidable recent Speed Figures with an average of 64. Carbajal will probably be able to get this filly to break out quickly in this contest. MYLLAY D - Has earned reliable Equibase speed figs in short races in the past.

I've got to go with ALTAMIRA SUR. Has strong Speed Figures and has to be considered for a bet in here. Has to be given a chance - I like the figures from the last competition. Has earned solid speed figures in dirt route races in the past. MAMBO QUEEN - Must be given a chance based on the competitive speed figure earned in the last contest. Could provide positive returns based on quite good recent Speed Figures with an average of 76. MISS CALL - Will probably go to the lead and may never look back. Karamanos has a win percent of 19 over the last month.

Belmont at the Big A - Race #9 - Post: 5:14pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $41,000 Class Rating: 75

                        Rating:

                        #4 FOTO (ML=8/1)
                        #9 URGENCY (ML=3/1)
                        #8 TEUTONIC (ML=5/2)

FOTO - This horse coming off a good contest in the last thirty days is a contender in my book. Sophisticated handicappers will tell you that this thoroughbred has strong speed. A repeat of that most recent performance on June 13th where he notched a fig of 75 looks strong enough to triumph in this race. Finished off the board last out at Belmont at the Big A, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 8/1 makes me think he's got a chance. URGENCY - Last raced at Belmont at the Big A in a race with a class figure of 82. Dropping considerably in class rating today puts him in a solid position right here in this race. TEUTONIC - I seem to always make money betting Brown horses on the turf. That barn has a strong win pct for this distance/surface. Was in a $75,000 Maiden Claiming race at Belmont at the Big A last out. That clash had a class number of 80 and he is moving down right here. A certain serious competitor. A definite class advantage goes to this horse. A pretty good sign he will be very competitive in this race on the turf.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #3 LEVI WARRIOR (ML=9/2), #1 SAVVYLICIOUS (ML=6/1), #11 BOOTSY'S A RASCAL (ML=8/1),

LEVI WARRIOR - This colt hasn't been showing me anything positive in the last couple of races. SAVVYLICIOUS - This colt showed little last time. Common speed figure last time around the track at Belmont at the Big A at 1 1/16 miles. Don't feel this pony will improve too much in today's race. BOOTSY'S A RASCAL - This horse hasn't shown much life in the last pair of affairs.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - TEUTONIC - Blinks on and you cannot bet wrong. This horse should be long gone.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #4 FOTO to win. Have to have odds of at least 7/2 or better though
