Scott Shapiro: Ellis Park Monday Spot Plays

      July 6, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

A rare Monday of racing in the Blue Grass is upon us due to the excessive heat last week forcing Ellis Park to postpone their first two cards of the summer. The card originally scheduled for Opening Day was moved to later today when they kick things off for Day 3 of the 2026 season in Henderson at 12:50 pm ET. The nine-race card is headlined by a trio of allowance races and the $3 All-Turf Pick 3 that gets started in Race 5. Here are a few horses that are double-digits on the morning line that I give a serious chance of springing the upset.

      Race 4:
A full field of 2YO fillies is set to travel 5.5-furlongs in this MSW event over the main track. The field consists of a lot of first-time starters, but I like one of the gals with experience. #6 By Her Decree debuted on May 28 at Churchill Downs where she broke fine and was sent aggressively from there to the front from her rail draw. The Jeremiah O’Dwyer was no match for late for off-the-pace winner Epic Reign, but that Steve Asmussen runner came back to run a good second in the Debutante as part of the closing day card in Louisville. Her speed is a weapon and she is likely to benefit with the move off the inside. Adam Beschizza was aboard in her first start and returns to ride this afternoon.

Play: #6 By Her Decree (10-1 ML)
      Picks: 6-4-7

      Race 5:
This non-winners of two claimer at one-mile over the Ellis sod kicks off the All-Turf Pick 3 and appears wide-open. The pace is likely to be honest if not contentious in this spot, which I am hoping sets things up for Henry Hinkle homebred #3 Got Gone. The 3YO filly makes her first start over this course after an even fifth-place finish against better at Churchill Downs on June 21. Trainer John Ennis keeps regular rider Alex Achard aboard the Hit It a Bomb filly that certainly has been no world beater thus far through seven starts, but should get a dream run along the inside. Trip is likely to make the difference in this one. I am hopeful that Got Gone gets the right one at a juicy price.

Play: #3 Got Gone (12-1 ML)
      Picks: 3-9-1

      Race 9:
The finale is a MSW event for fillies and mares at one-mile over the turf where I like #1 Marcheline. The $125,000 FTS October ’24 purchase makes her third lifetime start for trainer Vickie Oliver after a pair of turf sprints to kick off her career. The daughter of Not This Time broke slow and did little running in mid-April at Keeneland, but took a noticeable move forward with a solid finish and gallop out at 5.5-furlongs in Louisville on June 4. She is bred to want more ground and gets it along with a favorable inside draw at 4:42 eastern time. The pace should be honest, which should allow jockey Axel Concepcion to save ground early and come with a strong run late. Hopefully, we get the ML offering.

      Play: #1 Marcheline (12-1 ML)
      Picks: 1-8-9

Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Spot Plays

        July 6, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card with the $1.00 Pick 5 starting in Race 5, and the sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The Spot Plays for tonight are in Race 1, Race 3, and Race 5. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

        Race 1 (6:45 PM EDT)

4-Better By Seaside (7/2)-Won 2 straight at this level then stepped up to face $50k claimers and drew post 8. Comes off a no-move mile and now faces the same kind it beat. Has the gate speed to land on the point and could start a new win streak as the 3rd morning line favorite. (4-1-6)

Will use #4 Better By Seaside in a Win Bet.

        Race 3 (7:25 PM EDT)

5-Optical Illusion N (9/2)-Bumps up after a win and a 2nd place finish at the condition below. Has only 1 win in 15 races this year and could be overlooked. Will look for an honest pace as there is gate speed inside. Brent Holland could find some live cover and then be the best down the lane as in the last start. (5-3-1)

Playing #5 Optical Illusion to Win

        Race 5 (8:05 PM EDT)

2-The Ideal Dancer A (9/2)-Gets another swing at the same level after coming a good 2nd on 6-30. Will looks for some value with a veteran that knows how to win but doesn't have big gate speed. Broke slowly from the gate, was 10-lengths back last time and then rolled the back half in 55.3 to miss by a length. Should be racing closer to the lead tonight. Comes back quickly versus the same as 3 of 4 horses drawing inside are stepping up. Pat Lachance knows his trainee and will bank on him being in striking range down the lane at a square price. (2-5-1)

Playing #2 Ideal Dancer A to Win

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#3 Little Bohemia Honestly think the next one is going to be a handful, but I wonder if the race this filly exits might have been a touch better. Needs another step forward to land it.
#1 Au Courant She just finished in front of some of these and should find a cozy enough trip from the fence in a race without a ton of speed. The one to beat.
#4 Honorandaprayer She has a similar profile to the rail runner coming out of the same race, so she wouldn't be a real surprise either.
Race Summary Handful of logical players on paper, but I wonder if Little Bohemia might offer an attractive enough number on the board to take a shot while getting blinkers and Lasix for the first time.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #3
#4 Tiz Her Law She hasn't been able to stay late yet in any of her three starts, but she gets Lasix for the first time today while looking like the controlling pace in a small field.
#2 Companion Only mild finishes so far in a couple races, but those Delaware turf spots might have been a little deeper than this one, and she has some reasonable upside with the blinkers today.
#3 Scripted Love She ran on with a little bit of energy in a couple of those tries in Indiana, and I don't think she's far off of sharing form if she likes the new footing.
Race Summary Tiz Her Law stretches out with sprint pace, and her pedigree says she'll handle the trip. Will lean hard there.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#7 Nessy Thistledown debut run was pretty solid when showing sharp pace, and he'll likely have a go for it again in a race without a ton of serious front-end burn on paper so far.
#1 Cash Cashel He chased at the tail in the debut run, but there is probably some upside today at what should be a nice number. Expecting a more sustained effort today.
#4 Gangam Grey Couple of decent runs from him so far, but he has been just a little bit one-paced in the final yards, and I think that leaves him vulnerable on both fronts -- either failing to reel in a quicker early player or by getting picked up late by someone with more enthusiasm. Obvious player, I just have questions at what might not be a great price.
Race Summary Nessy showed some speed at first asking and stuck around pretty well. She might be able to keep that pace in hand just a bit better and play it out long enough to hold today.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Ellis Park - Race #3
#8 TAYLOR’S VERSION (9-2 Can maximize his speed in seasonal debut if works are an indicator.
#5 TAP ME A SONG (3-1) Only blemish outside of ‘stumble’ was a runner-up finish in 1:08-4/5.
#2 BARKSDALE (8-1) One of several class risers off claim adapted well to off-pace tactics in near miss.
Race Summary TAYLOR’S VERSION shows a fastest-of-151 workout from a series of fast preps for his seasonal debut. He can use his speed well from a favorable post at a distance which he posted a 97 Beyer as a 3-year-old. Bet to win and place and play an key #8 over 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 in a trifecta.
            Ellis Park - Race #5
#7 GALATINA (6-1) Tries to parlay improved dirt form into first turf victory, good value play.
#9 TWOLATEBABYDOLL (5-2) Handled ‘good’ turf in 5-1/2F win, averaged 72 Beyer in five ‘firm’ routes.
#2 BRITISH EMPRESS (5-1) Good first gear, gave way to fast fractions in latest at this distance.
Race Summary GALATINA led and held second on shorter rest than usual in a one-mile dirt race under the same conditions. Don’t Be Salty won as the 8-to-5 favorite and ran faster than a same-day, $30,000/nw2 race for the boys. She returns to turf for her third consecutive start in a new barn, seeking her first win on the grass. Bet to win and place and play 7-2 and 7-9 exactas.
            Ellis Park - Race #6
#7 ALAS (8-1) Ascending speed figures for 3-year-old filly, slowed by pace on sloppy track in latest.
#5 THEA (3-1) Good speed, good form, engaged in two duels in latest, often appears in ‘photos.’
#6 GYPSAN (6-1) Seeks fourth consecutive victory but first at one mile for new connections.
Race Summary ALAS tracked a slow pace, fanned out 7-wide for the stretch drive and finished willingly while no match for the favorites who ran 1-2. She romped to a 12-length maiden win two back from which she was claimed. Bet to win and place and play a 5-6-7 exacta box.

                  Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $20,000 Class Rating: 78

                  Rating:

                  #5 GOSHEN (ML=9/2)
                  #1 CALISUE (ML=3/1)
                  #7 DREAMING OF AUDREY (ML=5/1)

GOSHEN - Chavez should have her moving big on the turn. This mare is very reliable, frequently finishing in the money. CALISUE - Keiser comes to ride again after getting to know the mare in the last race. This animal isn't the morning line choice, but finished ahead of today's M/L favorite in her last race (Jun 3rd at Thistledown). This jockey and trainer have a favorable ROI when they combine forces. That 71 fig this mare recorded in her last event tells me she's a major player in today's event. She has the top EPS (earnings per start). Check out this horse. DREAMING OF AUDREY - I took a look at this mare's finishes. She's almost always on the board.

Vulnerable Contenders: #8 CLASSY DISPOSITION (ML=5/2), #2 DAME MAUDE CHARDIN (ML=6/1), #4 LEGALLY LUCKY (ML=8/1),

CLASSY DISPOSITION - This favorite may be out of condition without any recent morning drills. Don't believe this questionable contender will make an impact in today's event. That last speed rating was run-of-the-mill when compared with today's class figure. DAME MAUDE CHARDIN - A bit of a lackluster effort when this mare finished fourth. The rating last time out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's contest. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underpriced equine. LEGALLY LUCKY - Even though victorious in last, didn't finish the way you'd like to see when stepping up to face stiffer competition.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - GOSHEN - Took a drop in class in the last race at Thistledown. Stays at the same class today. Look for a strong showing.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #5 GOSHEN to win at post-time odds of 2/1 or better
                  EXACTA WAGERS: 5 with [1,7]

                    # 6 LU LU VATON 10/1
                    # 8 TUENDA 6/1
                    # 4 POLITICAL SPIN 9/2
I've got to go with LU LU VATON particularly if the morning line of 10/1 holds. Win percentage one of the best in this field. Has to be considered - I like the figs from the last race. Has the appearance of a money-making play. TUENDA - Sound average speed figures in dirt route races make this pony a key contender. Ought to be given a chance here on the basis of the figs in the speed realm alone. POLITICAL SPIN - Strong jockey with trainer figures make this horse a solid betting selection. She has a good opportunity in here as trainer, Vazquez, has solid win rate with horses going this distance.

                      # 6 QUIET INTENT 8/1
                      # 3 HEAT MERCHANT 5/2
                      # 4 FAST AND READY 4/1
QUIET INTENT is my pick and is a competitive value wager given the line. Overall the Equibase Speed Figs of this equine look very good in this affair. Going in a turf sprint race gives this gelding a very good shot. With a nice class rating average of 88, has one of the most favorable class advantages in this group of horses. HEAT MERCHANT - Earned a solid speed figure in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this affair. His 73 average has this gelding with among the best speed figures in this competition.

                        Colonial Downs - Race #1 - Post: 10:45am - Maiden Claiming - 8.5 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $40,000 Class Rating: 61

                        Rating:

                        #5 COCO NO LOCO (ML=3/2)

COCO NO LOCO - May be extremely hard to beat this mount on the sod today. Last time out scored a nice turf rating, the highest of any of these animals. Aboard this thoroughbred on June 2nd and Ashton is back again in the irons this time around. The improved speed figs over the last 3 races is great. Galligan drops him in this race fit and ready to go.

Vulnerable Contenders: #4 DAN GAMBLE (ML=2/1), #2 DIVINE SWAGGER (ML=5/2), #3 CHUCKY OUR LAW (ML=6/1),

DAN GAMBLE - Not probable that this animal will finish better than he did last time when ending up sixth. DIVINE SWAGGER - Hard to keep chasing this sort of 'bridesmaid' horse. CHUCKY OUR LAW - Hard to wager on at 6/1 odds after the most recent efforts.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - COCO NO LOCO - With the highest last speed rating of 59, this gelding looks exceptional against these horses.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #5 COCO NO LOCO on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds
                        EXACTA WAGERS: 5 with 1
