Scott Shapiro: Indiana Derby Day Hit & Split

    July 9, 2026 | By Scott Shapiro

One of the biggest cards of the weekend occurs in Shelbyville, Indiana where it is Indiana Derby Day. The folks at Horseshoe Indianapolis have put together a strong 13-race card to celebrate the biggest day of their meeting. The featured event goes as Race 12 (6:40 PM eastern) and makes up the third leg of the late Pick 4. The wager has a $1 minimum denomination and if you play it at 1/ST BET or Xpressbet you will be eligible for our $2M Rewards Points Hit & Split. Just head over to the promotional landing page under the promotions tab, register, and you are set to automatically earn your share of the $2M points. Here is how I plan to attack the sequence that includes three stakes and a state-bred MSW over the sod to close things out.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

Race 10: Jonathan B Schuster Memorial
    Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 8 Seminole Chief; 5 Encino
Backups: 6 Higgins Boat; 3 Wadsworth

Forecast: This 1 1/16-mile event over the grass attracted a solid field of 10 with a noticeable lack of serious early speed. It was difficult to separate this group based on current form, so I will use those I expect to be prominently placed early. This includes 20-1 longshot #8 Seminole Chief. The son of Girvin has always shown ability for Jack Sisterson winning 5 of 15 career starts. He moved into the Joe Sharp barn last out where he was dropped in class leading to a confidence building three-quarters length win at Churchill Downs. Sharp sends him the short trip from Kentucky to Horseshoe Indy where he should find a favorable early position once again, but at a much bigger price. I will make him my lukewarm top choice with plenty of respect to both the Brad Cox runners #4 Wadsworth and #5 Encino, as well as #6 Higgins Boat.

    Race 11: Indiana Oaks (G3)
    Grade: B-
    Main Ticket: 1 Star Actress
    Backups: 5 Prom Queen

Forecast: This year’s Indiana Oaks only drew a compact group of six, but it is competitive nonetheless. 9-5-ML favorite #5 Prom Queen gets some class relief as one of two fillies entered by Brad Cox. The Quality Road filly has disappointed in back-to-back starts, including the Kentucky Oaks (G1) where she did not get out of the gates well costing her any real chance. She returned in the Acorn (G1) where she was caught in a tight spot early and did her running from last, but had nothing left late when the real running started. There are certainly reasons to believe that the decrease in competition and a cleaner trip will lead to a much-improved performance, but at a short price she is not an attractive wagering option. I will instead take a swing with the longest shot on the board #1 Star Actress. The George Krikorian homebred tried the turf for the first time last out, but has been moved back to the dirt by trainer Bill Mott. She has just one win, but has not had things her way at all in her dirt races. She was down on a dead rail most of the way in her debut before finishing full of run late. Then, she handled business with a cleaner break in her next start before losing little in defeat in the Ashland (G1) and being caught wide throughout and racing against the flow on Oaks Day. She may have a lot of ground to make up late, but she is more talented than her running lines suggest. Hopefully, she shows it in this spot.

    Race 12: Indiana Derby (G3)
    Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 8 Leading Change; 3 Zihnal
    Backups: None

Forecast: With #9 Desert Gate set to run in the Iowa Derby, it is likely that #8 Leading Change is sent off the heavy favorite in this year’s Indiana Derby. The Wathnan Racing colt was dominant on debut going 7-furlongs at Churchill Downs coasting to a 6 -length romp. He has to prove himself at two-turns and against winners, but looks like the real deal making him tough to want to take on with confidence. That said, I will also include #3 Zihnal. I have tried to bet this gelding before in stakes spots, but he has been scratched by trainer Jonathan Thomas both times. He clearly has a lot of upside based on the way this highly respectable barn has handled him from the get-go and should get overlooked at the windows. I am unsure why the scratched him out of the Ohio Derby, but he will be on all of my tickets along with Leading Change if he remains in this spot.

    Race 13:
    Grade: C+
    Main Ticket: 3 Koger Lane
Backups: 5 Haziel; 9 Hotline Iris

Forecast: The second and third place finishers from an earlier state-bred MSW at 1 1/16-miles over the turf make plenty of sense in the finale. #5 Haziel was forced to make a four-wide middle move while #9 Hotline Iris stalked three-wide into the first turn and was unable to save ground. Both were out finished that day, but in with significant chances again. That said, I prefer the likely value of second-time starter #3 Koger Lane. The daughter of Unbridled Express debuted in a dirt sprint last month for trainer Aaron West. She was out of the gates slow and ran and underwhelming third, but stretches out here and moves to the grass. Both have every right to help her against a modest group of non-winners. Hopefully, she takes to the trip with Michell Murrill back in the saddle.

Jeremy Plonk: Bet $100, Get $10 Canterbury Key Plays | Thurs 7/9

      July 8, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

Throughout July, Tuesdays and Thursdays heat up at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet with our Red, White & Bet promotion. Bet $100, Get $10 on select tracks this month. Next up Thursday will be Canterbury Park. Here’s how I’ll approach the card in Minnesota with an assist from the Betmix Angler database.

      Canterbury Race 7 | 9:22 pm ET
#2 Hey River (5-2 morning line odds) appears to hold a significant early pace edge if able to outhustle #1 Eighty sixchevy, the 9-5 morning line chalk, at the start. Trainer Lynn Rarick’s runners are 6-10 in the exacta over the past few weeks and this is a pure, 7-furlong horse. Win bet #2. Daily Double 2-1. Picks: 2-1-8.

      Canterbury Race 8 | 9:52 pm ET
#1 Levigata (4-1 morning line odds) tries 2 turns for the first time and the best time to do that is from the rail with the entire field outside of you to keep you honest when that first turn comes up quickly. Trainer Joel Berndt has won with 4 of his last 9 starters locally since June 28 (including $9 and $18 scores) and this likely will be his longer-priced of 2 entrants in this race. Win bet #1. Exacta key-box 1 with 6,7. Picks: 1-6-7

      Eligible tracks and days:
      • Thursday, July 9 // Canterbury Park
      • Tuesday, July 14 // Finger Lakes
      • Thursday, July 16 // Belterra Park
      • Tuesday, July 21 // Mountaineer
      • Thursday, July 23 // Penn National
      • Tuesday, July 28 // Horseshoe Indianapolis
      • Thursday, July 30 // Charles Town

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Saratoga - Race #2
#2 Excessif Get a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this, as he's a fresh face in a race with a clear lack of standout form so far. Might not have to be a star to compete with this crew right out of the box.
#3 Just a Holiday Nothing from him after the slow break in the debut run on the main here last month, but he's got a versatile enough pedigree to think there might be some upside on the move to the grass. Better today.
#5 Beach Sandals The debut run was solid enough to think it might do the trick here if he can get back to it, but he turned in a non-effort in the follow-up start. Turf offers hope for a rebound.
Race Summary Think Excessif might be the right new face, but also take a look at #4 Captain G and #8 Pirate Ship, both of whom go first out for capable teams.
        Saratoga - Race #6
#1 Queen of Hawaii She ran on OK without ever being a real threat in the Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies Turf last year, but she returns in this reasonable spot to try some older horses for the first time in her first run of the year. All that could potentially help keep the price interesting enough on what was a decent enough 2-year-old with a bit of class.
#2 Play With Fire She's another with some class after the two-back run that landed her a Grade II placing, but she's also racing fresh off the bench today and could have some upside into her 4-year-old season. Appealing enough.
#7 Opulent Restraint Multiple Grade I-placed runner has room to improve off the fading comeback, as she should stick around better with that race under her belt. She's another classy runner in what feels like a loaded race for the level.
Race Summary This kind of race is exactly why Saratoga is so special -- an N2X that looks like an OK Grade III almost anywhere else. Queen of Hawaii is a 3-year-old coming off the bench to face older horses, so she will definitely need to have moved forward in her time away. That said, she has already shown some quality and could be ready to step into the same league as some of the other heavy hitters in here.
        Saratoga - Race #9
#7 Bull Shoals Game effort when second in the local try last month, and he should be in line for another really nice tracking trip in a race without a ton of confirmed pace. Could see him engaging on a first-jump kind of run.
#3 Luz De Guia He was just third in a pretty deep special weight spot on Belmont Stakes weekend, and I wouldn't be surprised to see him handle the turf well enough to outrun his price and share again.
#5 Coordinator There are already a couple of pretty decent names on his page through two starts, but I still think I wanted to see just a tiny bit more late ambition in both starts. He's the one to beat, but he was 56 cents on the dollar last out and figures to take some cash again. Don't think he has to win this.
Race Summary Bull Shoals is a legit player here if he's able to back up that last run, and I think the somewhat foggy race flow might work in his favor to sort himself into a good spot on the first turn. Also check out #1 Pay the Piper -- expecting a competitive run from him.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Woodbine - Race #1
#4 PRETTY LIZA (6-1) Proved versatile in 7F win on Tapeta, has short sprint experience, class jumps off claim.
#6 SILICIUM (5-2) Working up a storm for her return to the turf, gets in light-weighted.
#7 WORRY LESS (4-1) Steady check-getter at this level seeks first win on the lawn.
Race Summary PRETTY LIZA showed a passing gear in a 7F victory on the synthetic track, a tactic that should serve her well in this speed-laden short sprint on turf. She steps up off the claim and could repeat with a move forward in her fourth start this year. Bet to win and place and play a 4/6, 7/ALL trifecta.
          Woodbine - Race #2
#8 SPEAK UP (3-1) Held ok until final furlong in longer sprint, rallied into faster pace for second two back.
#9 BUFF BAY (7-2) Towered over her top speed figure, towered over field on unchallenged lead.
#4 STERLING HEIGHTS (5-2) Beaten favorite in three straight and winless in the past year.
Race Summary SPEAK UP ranged up 3-wide to challenge and put away the 7-to-2 leader mid-turn, then held well until the final sixteenth before a pair of deep closers passed by. She has run well from outer posts and can turn the tables on morning-line favorite STERLING HEIGHTS with a half-furlong less to run. Bet to win and place and play 8-4, 8-9 and 9-8 exactas.
          Woodbine - Race #7
#4 RESENTLESS PURSUIT (12-1) Has shown enough in the a.m. to emerge victorious in a weak field.
#8 THAT’S A FACT (3-1) On the wrong side of photo finishes in her last three starts at this level.
#3 NO MISTAKES (20-1) Hit board twice for higher tags in last two months, returns to level of claim.
Race Summary RESENTLESS PURSUIT need not be much for a high-percentage first-out barn. She fired a :35-1/5 bullet workout in May and a pair of 1:01+ moves recently. She meets 11 rivals who are a combined 0-for-77 with eight runner-up finishes on synthetic tracks. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-8-12 exacta box.

Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. GOLD FIBER - With a respectable 79 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this affair. Demonstrates the look of a lucrative play, averaging a solid 69 Equibase Speed Figure which is one of the most favorable in this group of horses in this race. BOSS E BOOGS - Ran a solid last race.

                  # 7 LA CANTERA (IRE) 4/1
                  # 1 HUMBLED 12/1
HIGH SOUTH is the best bet in this race. This pony has a very good winning percentage in turf routes. Put up a strong speed figure last time out. Has been moving soundly and has among the top speed in the race for today's distance. LA CANTERA (IRE) - David has her trained soundly to break sharply out of the starting gate. The speed fig of 95 from her last affair looks decent in here.

                    Delaware Park - Race #5 - Post: 2:28pm - Optional Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $48,000 Class Rating: 101

                    Rating:

                    #3 QUICK TO ACCUSE (ML=3/1)
                    #5 MOVISITOR (ML=8/1)

QUICK TO ACCUSE - This race sets up for this horse. I call this the 'Lone Stalker' scenario. When the real running starts, he'll be in stalking position. Synnefias, the trainer, shows intent by adding Lasix today. A positive sign. MOVISITOR - This horse runs very well off of a vacation. This jockey and trainer's animals have been producing a favorable ROI. Should do well right here. Weight shift of -5 from May 17th race at Parx Racing.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SPEEDYNESS (ML=8/5), #7 TRACKING ERROR (ML=9/2), #1 SHAFT'S BULLET (ML=6/1),

SPEEDYNESS - I don't normally play a morning-line favorite that hasn't been to the track in the last three weeks. TRACKING ERROR - This colt registered a speed figure in his last contest which probably isn't good enough today. SHAFT'S BULLET - Unlikely that the speed fig he earned on Jun 19th will be good enough in this race.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Have to go with #3 QUICK TO ACCUSE on the win end if we get at least 7/5 odds
                    EXACTA WAGERS: Box [3,5]

                      Thistledown - Race #3 - Post: 1:50pm - Allowance - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $38,400 Class Rating: 61

                      Rating:

                      #4 HOLIDAYS ARMY BRAT (ML=6/1)
                      #3 MSHAWISH'GIRL (ML=3/1)
                      #5 JASPER MAXIMUS (ML=8/5)

HOLIDAYS ARMY BRAT - Looking at today's class figure, this horse is up against an easier bunch than in the last race at Thistledown. Already raced against today's M/L choice on Jun 22nd at Thistledown and finished ahead of that one. Have to believe she can do it again right here. MSHAWISH'GIRL - This filly is in nice condition, having run a good race on Jun 8th, finishing first. I think this filly is ready to run a good one. She's had enough races since the vacation and should be fit. The last speed rating of 58 is the top last race rating in the field. 44-49-58 are last 3 speed figures. Improving each time out is something she should do again in this race. JASPER MAXIMUS - Ran a lackluster race at Thistledown in the last race. Racing without the off-track conditions puts this filly at the top of my list of contenders. Trainer Hamm moves this animal down the class ladder to face much lower class horses. Look for a good performance this time out. I look for an improvement in this event with the addition of Lasix for the 2nd time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 RYKA (ML=9/5), #1 OVER THE FALLS (ML=8/1),

RYKA - This filly hasn't had any on the board results in short distance races in the last sixty days. Didn't let me see any speed in the route contest for me to back her in today's sprint event. Unlikely for this entrant to do much this time. The long turnout is a troublesome sign. OVER THE FALLS - This filly notched a speed fig in her last race which probably isn't good enough in today's race.
