Race of the Week: Iowa Derby at Prairie Meadows | Saturday, 7/11

    July 7, 2026 | By Jeremy Plonk

    The Lead:
The headline races to Prairie Meadows’ Iowa Festival of Racing share the Saturday night marquee. The Cornhusker, Iowa Sprint and Iowa Derby are part of a 10-race card that gets underway at 7 pm ET. The $250,000 Iowa Derby goes as Race 7 and will be our focus. Horseplayers at 1/ST BET and Xpressbet enjoy 10X 1/ST Rewards Points on all wagers for Prairie Meadows on Saturday.

    Field Depth:
DESERT GATE is a Grade 3 winner and Grade 1-placed. He’s clearly held the best running lines over time. Stakes winners include CRUPPER and J J GREY, while THE HELL WE DID is Grade 3-placed.

    Pace:
DESERT GATE would be most committed to the front likely in a field of horses with pace versatility. Inside-drawn runners could be used for more speed, while the bulk of the lineup is made up of horses who want to be in the front third of the field early if possible. This track plays to speed and you rarely benefit from being far back, even with a hot pace.

    Our Eyes:
    Here are my horse-by-horse notes.

1-THE HELL WE DID: Talented brother to Senor Buscador disappointed in the Preakness when farther back than expected. That style won’t work at Prairie Meadows, and aggressive rider Ramon Vazquez likely puts him more into the race to secure the rail draw. Distance remains the question, however, but a top effort can land him in the exotics.

2-CRUPPER: Similar pace versatility and Preakness disappointment as The Hell We Did, their stories don’t veer much. Capable on a flashback to his Oaklawn stakes victory of making some impact here. Best chance is to carve out a pressing trip from just off the leader. Not as busy on the post-Preakness workout tab as The Hell We Did, but sharpened Jun. 25 in Louisville.

3-MAXIMUM EFFORT: Steve Asmussen’s record 5 Iowa Derby wins included Magnitude’s return score last summer as well as a 2017 victory with Hence when teamed with jockey Mike Smith. The veteran rider tries for the first time aboard this 7-race maiden who was third in the Texas Derby behind a pair of Iowa Derby return rivals. Maxfield colt loses ground to the leader in the final call each time, explaining his maiden status. Not for me.

4-J J GREY: While a 9: 4-0-0 record might lead us to think he’s all-or-nothing, closer inspection sees the Kenny McPeek trainee as 3: 3-0-0 in 2-turn dirt routes like the Iowa Derby. Smashing 104 and 100 BRIS late pace figures in his last 2 starts, including a local prep win in the Prairie Mile, give a lot of confidence for backing this Fair Grounds and Oaklawn allowance winner. The pick.

5-DESERT GATE: The 9-5 morning line favorite obviously is the most credentialed runner in the field and trainer Bob Baffert’s 4 Iowa Derby wins are second-most to Steve Asmussen’s 5. Owners Pegram, Watson & Weitman have taken the back roads this year to more than $300,000 in seasonal earnings via Santa Anita, Oaklawn, Lone Star, Thistledown and now Iowa. Back 3 weeks after tiring in the 9-furlong Ohio Derby, he’s been a modest finisher routing, even in victory in the Texas Derby not visually impressive or by the numbers (86 BRIS late pace figure). Inclined to try and beat him Saturday. Note: Cross-entered in the Indiana Derby at Horseshoe Indianapolis.

6-OUTMATCH: Local sprinter gets the class and distance test in one deep dive. One-turn closer is difficult to project in the pace scenario under Elvin Gonzalez, who navigated Iowa Derby success in 2022 with local 11-1 upsetter Ain’t Life Grand. Pedigree doesn’t bed for the distance but finished well enough going shorter to have earned a shot. Prefer others.

7-BRICKLIN: In 5 races around 2 turns, he’s lost margin to the winner in 4 of those, including disappointments at 6-5 and 2-1 odds in stakes company. Has some apparent talent but disheartening stamina leans more to his questionable damside pedigree than his classic-winning sire Nyquist. Note: Cross-entered in the Indiana Derby at Horseshoe Indianapolis and may fit better there as 1 of his 2 lifetime victories came over that surface last year.

8-CANNED HEAT: The Prairie Mile runner-up was second-best late to J J Grey last out over 110 yards shorter in distance. There’s no shortage of pedigree here to get the trip, though interestingly this one sprinted 9 times in 11 starts. J J Grey worked twice to his 1 drill since the Prairie Mile, but this horse historically hasn’t done much clockwork in the morning for Jesse Oberlander. Barn is 2-45 on the year coming into the week and difficult to project getting all the candy Saturday.

9-CHAD ALLAN: The field’s likely only true closer around 2 turns, expect jockey Alfredo Triana, Jr. to take him back off the pace from the opening bell and try to save ground behind the field. Second to Crupper and Desert Gate in separate stakes bids, he’s also dropped different decisions to The Hell We Did and Bricklin in the overnight ranks. He’ll get 8-10 pounds in relief from recent starts and benefits if they go fast; but deeper closers rarely find success on this racetrack. Underneath at best.

    Most Likely Exotics Contender:
J J GREY has a win over the track, the best finishing figures in the lineup and has yet to be beaten around 2 turns on dirt.

    Best Longshot Contender:
CRUPPER at 8-1 morning line is the most appealing of the prices. He fits better here than the Preakness, obviously, and isn’t afraid to fight in a race loaded with similar styles.

    Sending it in ($100 bankroll):
    $80 win J J GREY. $10 exacta part-wheel J J GREY over THE HELL WE DID and CRUPPER ($20).

      Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Spot Plays

      July 11, 2026 | By Al Cimaglia

It's Meadowland Pace Night in East Rutherford New Jersey. Besides the $810,000 headliner that rolls in Race 10 there is a star-studded card with over $2.4 million in purses. The Spot Plays tonight are in Race 5 the Silverman Memorial, in Race 10 the Meadowland Pace, and in Race 11 the Haughton Memorial. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 5 (8:15 PM EDT)

5-Perfect Thought (6-1)-Put in a nice effort versus the boys at The Meadows on 7-4 and had been off 3 weeks. Got on the point early on and surrendered the lead to the eventual winner who caught enough of a breather to get to the wire 1st. Did close in 26.1 and my guess is the connections were very happy with that tune up. Tonight, draws inside of the 2 program favorites who have post 6 (Loua Dipa) and post 9 (Be Perfect BG). This will be 1st time for Lasix for Loua Dipa. Be Perfect BG is also in sharp form and is 6-6 at M1. It has won from post 11 but hasn't had post 9 before at the Big M. James MacDonald should have Perfect Thought racing near the top of the stack and could get an efficient trip. She can close in a hurry and should offer a square price. Will look for JMac to have the daughter of Perfect Sting within striking range at the top of the lane.

      5-9-6

Using #5-Perfect Thought in a Win Bet

      Race 10 (10:20 PM EDT)

7-Sweet Luvin Lou (6-1)-Last week, Brandon Blvd (2), got the jump on the field and rolled home. After that sparkling performance was installed as the 3/5 morning line chalk. My lean will be toward Lou who rallied hard down the lane to come 2nd. At the 6-1 morning line there is value, and it appeared Scott Zeron executed his plan exactly to script in the Elimination. Zeron didn't put much pressure on the 3-year-old until they turned for the wire. It seemed like there wasn't a doubt he would qualify, and its 1st start on Lasix was successful. The post helps the price, and the odds-on chalk will be a handful, but Zeron should be leaving off the car this week. If the trip is smooth and there isn't too much ground to make up down the stretch the son of Sweet Lou could surprise.

      7-2-8

Playing #7 Sweet Luvin Lou to Win

      Race 11 (10:45 PM EDT)

1-Oakwood Ardan IR (7/2)-Came 2nd last week to Ervin Hanover and raced in 1.47. There would be nothing to be ashamed of if that was the entire story. But the Robert Cleary trainee was also hung the mile and was 1st over from just after the half pole. So, it was a very game performance and now starts form the rail. No doubt, James MacDonald will need to work a more efficient trip, if so, it could be picture time. The 7-year-old hit the board in 16 of 21 at M1 and has taken 14 pictures. Finished 2nd in the last 2 races and could reward backers this time if comes back with another strong effort.

      1-4-5

Will use #1 Oakwood Ardan IR in a Win Bet

        Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

        Saratoga - Race #5
#1 Zeitlos Wouldn't be at all surprised if she landed this, as she has been reliable enough on turf and rallied for second in this spot last year. Tough names on her page.
#4 Sunna Her turf form has been pretty sharp, and she has the pace to be right up on the splits early in a race without a ton of super serious pace.
#6 In Our Time She draws well to force the issue from the start here, but I just feel like some of her form this year has been shy of what she was offering last year. Capable, but probably not for me.
Race Summary Zeitlos didn't raise a serious effort behind a tough winner last out, but she has some decent enough turf form that might play OK in what doesn't feel like as deep a crew a she faced in this race last year.
        Saratoga - Race #10
#6 Minaret Station If you've been a regular reader of this space, you know how I feel about this guy. He finally gets away from Lagynos, who has won five straight, and the barn thinks he's only going to get better as he goes longer -- I don't disagree. Think he'll handle these today.
#4 Fort George He's the obvious danger with what had been pretty reliable form before the fading try in Group I company in March. Wouldn't argue with you that hard if you landed here, I just think very highly of the top choice. One of these should land it.
#5 Carson's Run He has had a tough time trying to get back to the 3-year-old form, but I still have hope that he's better than he has shown in recent starts. Don't think he's getting back to his career best here, but he could probably play here with something a bit shy of it.
Race Summary Minaret Station and Fort George look like the right pair in here, but I have been a big believer in Minaret Station and am not remotely convinced we have seen his best. Look out.
        Saratoga - Race #11
#9 Manor Park Price might be OK on the rise, and I like the way he moved forward last time out when racing closer to the pace. Could be in line for another good run.
#10 Coach Ryan Obvious threat while racing fresh for a top team, but I also wasn't entirely blown away by the first two starts, and I worry the price is going to get shorter than it realistically should. One of the ones.
#5 Karsten Little bit of reasonable upside today would put him in the picture, and I like that he has turned in a couple of relatively quick works since that debut run. Possible.
Race Summary Fun race to close the card, but I think the presence of a couple logical players will keep the price fun enough on Manor Park who looks like a fit on the rise.

          Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

          Colonial Downs - Race #1
#3 MIGHTILY (5-1) Kept busy at Keeneland to get ready for her debut; sire was Grade 1 winner on the lawn.
#6 THAT’S ENOUGH (3-1) Useful 4-1/2F debut for barn that excels with turf routers.
#5 A LA MODE (9-2) $175K sales buy debuts for Casse; Medaglia d’Oro is 16-ranked turf sire this year.
Race Summary MIGHTILY steeped it up a notch in her final debut prep, breezing 4F from the Keeneland gate in :46-4/5 seconds, the fastest of 20 workouts July 4. Her sire, War of Will, was a multiple Grade 1 winner of $1.8 million, including a victory in the $300,000 Maker’s Mile on turf. Bet to win and place and play a 3-ALL exacta.
          Colonial Downs - Race #2
#1 MINARI (2-1) Appears ready for winning rally in third start off layoff at distance which she’s conquered.
#2 READING TIME (3-2) Finished in the money in 3 of 4 starts for this barn, gets Paco.
#6 IAMDEPENDINGONYOU (30-1) Steady improvement with Lasix, won in $16k main-track route race.
Race Summary MINARI rallied for third off a 10-month layoff to finish third for twice today’s claiming price. The pace-setting winner was coming off an allowance victory. Minari made a mild move in a follow-up allowance and she’s one of three entrants with a win at the distance. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-6 exactas.
          Colonial Downs - Race #3
#7 ROCKER ROLLER (3-1) Well-spotted for score in third start but will be underlay in this barn.
#4 RUNTOWN (15-1) Dueled to stretch in runner-up showing at Gulfstream, can rate.
#3 KING CHEETAH (8-1) Solid foundation of workouts for first start, gets in light-weighted.
Race Summary Team Russell class dropper ROCKER ROLLER ran third behind a pair of follow-up winners in her debut at this distance and gets pace to run at in her third go-round today. The barn is on a 7-for-19 run with the MSW-to-maiden claiming angle. Bet to win and place and play 7-3 and 7-4 exactas.

Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

                PURCHASE

                Prairie Meadows - Race #8 - Post: 9:24pm - Stakes - 9.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $300,000 Class Rating: 107 Prairie Meadows Cornhusker H. (Grade 3)

                Rating:

                #3 HEROIC MOVE (ML=4/1)
                #5 SAN SIRO (ML=5/1)
                #8 NAVAJO WARRIOR (ML=5/2)

HEROIC MOVE - Changes tracks from last out at Lone Star Park to here. Multiple wins on different ovals tell me this horse likes to switch it up, so that's a good sign. I like this horse. Has the highest earnings per start in here. SAN SIRO - This race horse should be rumbling in the lane. NAVAJO WARRIOR - When a pony finishes in-the-money as often as this gelding does, you will usually want to use him in your exotic wagers. This horse likes to win on different ovals. The switch in venue today may be a wake up call.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #4 CORNISHMAN (ML=9/2), #1 BULLARD (ML=6/1), #6 GIGANTE (ML=8/1),

CORNISHMAN - 9/2 is too low of a price to take on this horse. BULLARD - The speed rating last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this clash when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's affair. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underlay. GIGANTE - Trying to beat this participant today at the price of 8/1.
STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #3 HEROIC MOVE to win if you can get odds of 7/2 or more

                  # 4 TACO CAT BACKWARDS 8/1
                  # 2 READING TIME 3/2
                  # 1 MINARI 2/1
I think TACO CAT BACKWARDS is a very good selection and the potential return justifies the hazardous nature of the long odds. Posted a solid speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this affair. The average Equibase class rating alone makes this one a key contender. READING TIME - Reason to like this filly as she has in the irons one of the best jocks using winning percentages over the last month. Has performed solidly as of late in route races, posting a nifty 75 avg speed rating. MINARI - Must be given a chance here on the basis of the numbers in the speed section alone. One of the best win percentages between this jockey and trainer make this mare dangerous.

                      # 4 NOW SHOWING 7/2
HURRICANE LASSIE is the best wager in this race. Has been close at the finishing post most every time recently. Appears to have a respectable class edge based on the recent company kept. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid figs in dirt sprint races as of late. SHACKED STATESIDE - When this jockey and trainer team up, bettors often make money. Donlin has this mare running well and is a solid selection based on the quite good speed figures earned in sprint races lately. NOW SHOWING - Ought to be given a shot - I like the numbers from the last outing.

                        Belterra Park - Race #6 - Post: 3:05pm - Maiden Special - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $13,000 Class Rating: 74

                        Rating:

                        #6 UNION EMPRESS (ML=5/2)

UNION EMPRESS - Elliott rode this horse for the first time last time around the track and comes right back this time. I think this filly is coming into top form. Comparing how the horses in this field have fared under similar conditions, I see this thoroughbred has the highest Equibase speed figure for the distance & surface. Running 1 mile on the turf, you've have to look at horse's turf figures. This horse has the tops in the bunch. That 81 fig this filly registered in her last race tells me she's a major player this time out.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 HALLEY'S COMET (ML=2/1), #5 AKKADIAN (ML=7/2), #1 ENFIELD (ML=4/1),

HALLEY'S COMET - This pony hasn't been on the track since June 5th. Not even any morning activity. AKKADIAN - Not likely that the speed rating he notched on June 13th will be good enough in this affair. ENFIELD - If he goes off close to the M/L odds of 4/1, I'll have to pass.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - UNION EMPRESS - On Jun 10th at Belterra Park this filly checked in with a sharp final quarter, making her the horse to gamble on.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #6 UNION EMPRESS on top if we're getting at least 1/1 odds
