Scott Shapiro: Saratoga Pick 6 Carryover of $166,703

For the second consecutive Saturday no one was able to solve the $1 Pick 6 at Saratoga leading to a Sunday carryover of $166,703 in the traditional style wager that kicks off shortly before 3PM eastern. Here are a few horses I like most within Sunday’s Pick 6 sequence.


Race 4:
The Pick 6 gets started with a wide-open MSW event at one-mile for 2YOs over the Inner Turf where #5 Berta’s Stitch was made the 7-2-ML favorite by oddsmaker David Aragona after a strong finish and gallop out on debut going 5.5-furlongs at Aqueduct in mid-June. The pedigree is there to get the two-turns, but a late finish going one turn when lacking early zip does not always translate to a move forward with more ground. The experience advantage is certainly an edge, but the tote will show that. I will try first-time starter #3 Suspend. Hall of Famer Bill Mott used to be good for one upset win with a 2YO in a two-turn MSW turf race each summer at the Spa. His business plan has changed of late with a focus on winning Triple Crown races like he did with Sovereignty, but I like the draw and pedigree on this son of Tapit that is out of a War Front mare that won on debut over the Belmont grass and went 5 for 17 for over $1M in career earnings. He should be fit for his debut after a long series of drills in Florida and New York.

Race 6:
Trainer Chad Brown holds a strong hand in this second-level allowance event for fillies and mares at 6.5-furlongs over the main track with 9-5-ML favorite #7 Alyeska and 7-2-second choice #3 Limes Don’t Lie, but the issue is Brown is on an 0-14 skid this week. This obviously includes several runners that looked like they were in with significant chances on paper. The perennial high percentage conditioner will get going at the Spa soon enough, but is hard to back until I see the obvious heat up from his barn. Especially given the probable race shape in the start of the late Pick 4 where there is very little speed on paper outside of #1 She’s a Gamer. The daughter of Game Winner ships in from the Jersey Shore for Kelly Breen after a seven-length winner versus lesser. The extra half-furlong and ability to handle the increase in competition are obvious questions, but she may forget to stop with the lead she should have when they turn for home.

Race 8:
This optional claimer over the Inner Turf will be a tough hurdle for anyone alive after four legs of the challenging Pick 6 sequence since there are a number of ways. #1 Mo Kressa should get a great trip third off the bench at 15-1 on the ML if he can relax along the inside this time, while #8 Hard Circle comes into his second start off the claim for Mertkan Kantarmaci after a trio of promising starts over the grass. That said, #12 The Paddock Pastor at his 8-1-ML offering is tough to pass up. The 5YO gelding ran too good to lose here at the Spa last month. The son of Get Stormy was caught wide throughout on a day where saving ground was imperative, yet still kept trying to the wire at odds of 13-1. The NY-bred enters this spot in the best form of his career and is in with a big chance if jockey Jaime Rodriguez can find a way to work out a favorable trip. He certainly needs to have to have a better plan than he did on June 7, but this horse should be rolling late if able to save any ground into that first turn.

Northfield Park starts the week with a 16-race card featuring Ohio Sires Stakes action. The Spot Plays are in Race 6, Race 11, and Race 13. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (7:50 PM EDT)

6-Time Has Come (4-1)-Won 3 back at Nfld and took pictures in the preceding 3 races. Then drew outside in the next 2 starts at Scioto and didn't connect at all. Doesn't get a choice post but should fit nicely with this crew and might be overlooked. Hit the board in all 3 races at Nfld and took 2 pictures. Needs a trip and can roll late off cover. The fractions should be honest and Kurt Sugg has won a couple of times sitting behind the 3-year-old.

Playing #6 Time Has Come to Win

Race 11 (9:40 PM EDT)

3-Fun To Love N (7-1)-Beat this kind 4 back and then had excuses in the last 3 races. Likes to get on the engine, Justine Irvine could work that trip and should offer a solid price. Will use in Exactas and hopefully won't be over bet.
7-Huntress (5/2)-This is a classy 7-year-old mare who won its only race at Nfld. That start came 2 back versus this kind with tonight's pilot Brett Miller between the pipes. Has the gate speed to be on top or in the pocket around the opening turn. Looks like a main player and will use in an Exacta Box.

Race 13 (10:24 PM EDT)

5-Queen Of Fear (5-1)-Comes off a big try versus better from post 7 in the slop. Finished 4th but the trip was wide and bumpy. The 4-year-old is often in the mix at Nfld (14-5-1-2) but is 0-4 on a wet surface. The Ed Miller pupil has the gate speed to get a good early seat. Could be sitting on a big try at a square price.

Saratoga - Race #2

#6 Pretty Tapit	She was pretty sharp when finally punching home to graduate last time around, as she was getting pretty short on excuses at that point. Love the way she responded to the longer trip and think she's in line for another great go today.
#3 Midnight Concerto	She has become pretty honest and figures to be rolling late with these. Wouldn't be any surprise on top, just think the choice is going to get a pretty big jump on her.
#1 Kiamba	Briefly considered her on top -- she's logical enough with the decent Grade III run on her page in May, and while she's got some obvious room to bounce back after the flat try last out, that was a really dull run at 46 cents on the dollar. I guess I'm indifferent -- trust your gut on her.
Race Summary	Pretty Tapit steps up to meet some horses who have faced much better, so there is definitely a question of class here, but I loved her last and wonder if she just found her home at this longer kind of trip.

Saratoga - Race #6

#1 She's a Gamer	I think she's got a chance to take it to this group from the fence early, and she might be able to see it out if she avoids taking too many challenges on the turn. Think she's live with a good race shape as the only pure sprint pace.
#6 The Big Calhouna	She's likely to be in range throughout, as she's got a long string of pressing tries on her page and might be the one to take the first shot at the top choice. Better stuff would do, but she also gives away ground late in many of her races.
#7 Alyeska	She's back fresh with a handful of imposing running lines on her page, but I worry that she's going to have to use a little bit more speed than wanted to try to keep tabs on the faster horses early at this trip. Talent is there, but I'd be wary of any kind of short price here.
Race Summary	She's a Gamer is quick enough to have a run at this group from the inside draw, and I'm hoping the price will be just appealing enough to see if she's able to stay this extra sixteenth of a mile.

Saratoga - Race #9

#9 Charlie My Boy	He's a total reach, but he should be a huge price in a race where I'm not really sure who you're supposed to be afraid of. He has taken a couple small steps forward in the recent Finger Lakes races, and he might get outrun by some quicker players early, leaving him in a decent midpack spot. From there, it's just whether he has any interest in finishing on the turf. Willing to find out at a big number.
#12 Thirsted	Not a ton of serious finishing form on the page in here, so I'm curious to see if the recent route pace might play into a spying kind of run that at least keeps him in the game to try to get past some horses late while never too far back.
#2 Mykonos	He has just been struggling to find that final gear late, but he's quick enough to be in the mix turning for home, and that might be enough in a soft spot.
Race Summary	Not much but forward and chasing pace on paper so far, so I'm trying to find someone who might be able to turn in a decent enough rally to land this. Charlie My Boy is not the most likely to do that, but it feels like he's heading the right way while trying turf for the first time. #11 Twenty One Red should also get a pretty good go of things, but he's getting short on excuses.

BAIE LONGUE - This gelding won at this distance on January 20th and was at a higher class than today. This gelding seems to run pretty good after a layoff. This gelding's last speed rating is lofty enough to triumph here, I'll invest in him back again today.

AFJAN - The speed figure last out doesn't fit very well in this contest when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's race. Mark this entrant as a questionable challenger. DIRT ROAD RED - Tough for anyone who saw this pony in his last race to bet on him this time. WOOD CEILING - A bit of a lackluster effort when this gelding finished third.

The last time I saw this horse was at Mountaineer Park in a race with a class figure of 98. Dropping considerably in class rating in today's event puts her in a solid position right here in this race. This mare ran versus the boys last time. In with her own gender today. The jockey and trainer combination here have a high win percentage when they join forces. Multiple wins in this horse's life, all at Mountaineer Park. Could add another win right here. This rider fits well with this animal. The mare and Barrios together win at a rate of 50 percent.
